Jack E. Gage

Jack E. Gage, 74, of Arkansas City, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at his home under the care of his family and hospice in Arkansas City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at the Hawks Funeral Home in Arkansas City with the Reverend Jack Dickson officiating. Interment will be in the Springside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. On Wednesday, the casket will not be open. Jack was born on July 2, 1933 in East Bolton Township in Cowley County, the son of Roy D. and Genevieve Jacques Gage. He attended Arkansas City Schools. Jack faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954. He served on the SS Carmick, a naval mine sweeper. On April 23, 1961, he married Ruene Crampton in Miami, Okla. Jack worked at Rodeo Meats for 22 years. He later retired from the Rural Water District No. 1 and Gage Ditching. Jack was a life member of the V.F.W. Spencer Ralston Post No. 1254, serving in all offices, including commander, state commander and national aide-de-camp. He was a life member of American Legion Post No. 18. Jack was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of Crescent Lodge No. 133. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, was an avid KU fan and a St. Louis Cardinals fan. Jack was rural water operator of the year in 1991. Most of all Jack loved his wife, children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Ruene Gage, of Arkansas City; son, Mark Gage and his wife, Holly, of Arkansas City; and daughter, Heather Jackson and her husband, Justin, of Summerville, S.C.; brother, Arch Gage and his wife, Gin, of Santa Cruz, Calif., Roy Gage and his wife, Pat, of Martinez, Calif., and John Gage Sr. and his wife, Minnie, of Arkansas City; sister, Neda Joe Bills, of Arkansas City; grandchildren, Denton Gage, of Claremore, Okla., Katie Gage McKenna and her husband, James, of Winfield, Evan Jackson, of Summerville, S.C., Nolan Jackson, of Summerville, S.C.. and Aidan Jackson. of Summerville, S.C.; great-grandson Brendan McKenna. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Conrad Gage and Tom Gage; and sister, Virginia Wahler.
Memorials have been established with the Bob Dole Veterans Hospital and the Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions can be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Teresa Marie Lloyd

Teresa Marie Lloyd, 61, Arkansas City, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in the Parker Cemetery. Born June 15, 1946, in Wichita, she was the daughter of Bill Howell and Mary Louise (Smith) Howell. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Allen L. Lloyd of the home; son, Thomas Wilder, of Doniphan, Mo.; daughter, Louise Ceballos, of Catoosa, Okla.; stepsons, Coy Lloyd and Mark Lloyd, both of Arkansas City; stepdaughters, Mary Green, of Tulsa, Jessica Holmes and Alice Gorajewski, both of Arkansas City, and Julia Warner, of New Jersey; sister, Theota Pruett, of Mountain View, Mo.; brother, Louis Isreal, of Tulsa; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ricky Howell; and a brother, Noah Isreal.
A memorial has been established for the Teresa M. Lloyd Memorial Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Letha K. Tribbey

Letha K. Tribbey, 91, former Winfield resident, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at the Pleasant Valley Nursing Center in Sedan. Graveside funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008, in Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m Tuesday. Born Sept. 7, 1916, on a farm east of Winfield, she was the daughter of William L. and Ola (Ott) Yadon. She and her husband owned and operated a floor sanding and refinishing business in Winfield for 22 years. She also worked for USD 465 at the South Vernon School as a custodian for 12 years and in food service seven years. Survivors include her brother, Art Yadon, Sedan; two nephews and two stepnieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, L. Merle Tribbey; sister-in-law, Betty Yadon.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Winfield Rest Haven and the Pleasant Valley Nursing Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Isabel B. Brown

Isabel B. Brown, 3 months, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Reynaldo Rocio-Castillo III

Reynaldo Rocio-Castillo III, infant son of Reynaldo Castillo Jr. and Samatha Rocio, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Elmer Aloysius Kuhn

Elmer Aloysius Kuhn, beloved husband, father and grandpa, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Stormont Vail Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Topeka. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m Sunday, at the church. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. also at the church. Born June 21, 1923, in Park, Kan., he was the son of Michael P. and Katharine Braun Kuhn and was the seventh of 10 children. His family moved to Topeka when he was 5 years old. On Sept. 11, 1944, he married Edith Clarene Fowler. They met when 17 years old on Scotland Avenue where their families lived only a few houses apart. After their daughters were born, they moved back to that same block, first renting and eventually buying a home close to those where they were reared. Elmer's first job was delivering sample packages of Rice Krispies at the age of 8. He worked at Helzburgs as a salesman and watch repairman. His career in woodworking began at Whelan Lumber Company, where he learned cabinet making and became a skilled craftsman. After 20 years at Whelan's, he founded Midwest Millwork and worked with his sons for 15 years. Following his retirement, he worked with his sons and grandson, Scott, at Shawnee Woodwork. He looked forward to the start of each day at work with Jim until early this year. As a high school junior and senior he was the starting pitcher for an American Legion ball team. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his vegetables with family and friends. With his wife, he traveled the western states always marveling at the scenery and wildlife. He was a devoted husband and father and especially delighted in his grandchildren. He was a faithful and ardent member of Sacred Heart Church for nearly 80 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Karen E. Zeller, Arkansas City, Anne Kuhn, Lawrence; his sons, Michael S. Kuhn and James D. Kuhn, both of Topeka; his granddaughter, Sarah E. Swantner, Boise, Idaho; grandsons Scott M. Kuhn, Eden Prairie, Minn., and Paul V. Kuhn, Ft. Worth, Texas; stepgranddaughter Michelle Gleason and her daughters, Samantha and Mya, of Surprise, Ariz.; sisters Louise Barrett, Denver, Colo., and Wilma Chaffin, Wichita; sister-in-law Barbara Kuhn, Denver; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Edmund, Herbert, Paul and Donald; and his sisters, Loretta Bergeron, Eleanor Carson and Leone Lizenbery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church or Midland Hospice in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 S.W. Urish Road, Topeka, KS 66614.

Helen Louise Parker

Helen Louise Parker, 78, died Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2007, at Brandt Funeral Home in Dallas Center, Iowa. Interment was in Brethren Cemetery in the same community. Helen Louise Parker was born March 12, 1929, in Luray, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Albert Gilbreth and Eunice Estella (Parker) Gilbreth. She had been the executive director of the Senior Citizen's Center in Arkansas City and director of the Senior Community Center of Dallas Center. Survivors include her children, Dean Davis, of Wichita, Kent Parker, of Dallas Center, Kristi Williams, of Runnells, Iowa, Laurie White, of Tigard, Ore., Kendra Williams, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Marla Cox, of Altoona, Iowa; three brothers; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; her son, Philip L Davis; and her husband, Robert E. Parker.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Helen L Parker Memorial Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brandt Funeral Home, Dallas Center, Iowa.

Franklin Smith

Franklin Smith, 69, died Thursday, April 19, 2007, at his daughter's home under the care of his family and hospice in Arkansas City. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at the Oxford Funeral Service Chapel. Chaplain Vern Richardson will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Franklin was born on May 26, 1937, in Sedan, the son of Leslie Roy and Mary Ellis Smith. Franklin worked for the Wellington Wal-Mart in maintenance for over 24 years. Survivors include his wife, Sally (McLaughlin) Smith; three sons, Leslie Smith, of San Diego, Calif., Larry Smith, of Wichita, and Rick May, of Oxford; two daughters; Lynne Taylor, of Augusta, Ark., and Christi Elston, of Arkansas City; two daughters-in-law; sisters, Georgia Dale, of Arkansas City, and Myla Sallee, of Winfield, Kan., 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Laura Olberding.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions can be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service, Oxford.

Allie Rindt

Allie Rindt, 97, of Arkansas City, died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Medicalodge East. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at the First Baptist Church of Arkansas City. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Allie was born Feb. 4, 1910, in Butler, Okla., to Benjamin and Amanda (Armstong) Stockton. She was reared and educated in Missouri and moved with her family, including her twin, Hallie, to Arkansas City in 1923. She attended Arkansas City High School. On May 10, 1931, she married Jesse P. Rindt in Arkansas City. Together the couple started Jesse Rindt Mortuary in 1939, now known as the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Allie worked as a funeral director, bookkeeper, and organist for the funeral home until she retired in 1982. Allie was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, where she was baptized in 1923. She was a very active member serving on many different committees. She was a charter member and past president of the Soroptimist Club, former member and past president of the BPW, 50 year member and past Worthy Matron of the Victory Chapter No. 151 Order of the Eastern Star, past president and 50 year member of the S.O.O.B., former member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and the Kansas and National Funeral Director's Associations. Allie was also very active in the Arkansas City Music and Drama Club. She was a longtime member of the Twilighters and the Alley Cats Band. The Alley Cats visited area nursing homes to the delight of the residents. Survivors include her son, Fred and his wife, Donna, of Arkansas City; two grandchildren, Jeff Rindt, of Tulsa, Kelly and her husband, Mark McGuigan, of Arkansas City; five great-grandchildren, Ryan and Lauren McGuigan, Lindsay, Aaron, and David Rindt. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jesse P.; son, Clifford, in 1931; two brothers, John and Fred Stockton; four sisters, Dollie Harrington, Josephine Woods, Pearl Thompson, and her twin, Hallie Gaddis, on April 19, 2004.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Joseph Zavala

Joseph Zavala, 85, of Arkansas City, died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at his residence. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, April 26, 2007, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Arkansas City. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Norvil Sumpter

Norvil Sumpter, 93, Arkansas City, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at his home under the care of Hospice in Arkansas City.

Verna Floy Stuteville

Verna Floy Stuteville, 90, of Arkansas City, died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at the Central Christian Church Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. later that day at the Okeene City Cemetery, Okeene Okla. The Rev. Steve Chambers will officiate. Verna was born April 16, 1917, at Okeene, Okla., to Martin and Pearl (Dickerson) Stuteville. She was reared and educated in Okeene. She later graduated from Central State College (UCO) of Edmond, Okla., and later received her Master's Degree in education from Oklahoma State University. Verna worked at Tinker AFB during WWII, and started her teaching career in Dibble, Okla. She also taught at Gore and Purcell before moving to Arkansas City in August of 1954. She taught business and typing for the next 28 years retiring in 1982. She was active in many clubs and societies in her lifetime, notably, the DAR, Victory Chapter No. 151 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Bridge Club and the Central Christian Church. Verna moved to the Presbyterian Manor in 2002. Survivors include many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters.
A memorial has been established with the Central Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Waneta Veronica (Yates) Knuckey

Waneta Veronica (Yates) Knuckey, 92, died Friday, April 20, 2007. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at the First Assembly of God Church in Winfield. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. today. Born Aug. 2, 1914, in West Plains, Mo., she was the daughter of Charles and Maude (Tabor) Yates. She worked as a nurse at a hospital in Holdenville, Okla., for several years. Survivors include her son, Larry Knuckey, Topeka; daughter, Marcia Keely, Arkansas City; sisters, Vivian Erwin, Healdton, Okla., Betty Williams, Oklahoma City, and Melva Gilliam, Moore, Okla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lorence Matthew Knuckey; baby son, Garry Frank Knuckey; three brothers, Harry, Paul and Frank; and two sisters, Opal and May.
A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Florence "Arawana" Robinson Jordan

Florence "Arawana" Robinson Jordan, 73, of Arkansas City, died Friday, April 20, 2007, at the Medicalodge East Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. Graveside services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2007, in the Riverview Cemetery. Pastor Mark Fry will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Neva Lawless

Neva Lawless, 92, of Belle Plaine, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Wellington.

Marvin "Johnny" Wells

Marvin "Johnny" Wells, 83, farmer and stockman, died April 12, 2007. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, in Stalter Cemetery, Rock, Kan. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Born Jan. 21, 1924, in rural Mulvane, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Lina A. (Engurt) Wells. He was a previous Rock Creek Township Accessor. Survivors include his companion, Betty Minson, Udall; children, Dennis Wells, Richland Springs, Texas, Deuane Wells, Parkerfield, Kan., Connie Hittle, Winfield; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, L. Maxine (Brown) Wells; two brothers, Gilbert and Melvin Wells.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home, Douglass.
