Laree Fitzgerald

Laree Fitzgerald, 40, Wichita, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at her home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield. Interment will follow in the Atlanta Cemetery in Atlanta. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Born Aug. 29, 1966, in Elkhart, Kan., she was the daughter of Scott and JoAnn (Minor) Fitzgerald. She was employed at the Kansas Heart Hospital and Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, as a registered nurse. Survivors include her father, Scott Fitzgerald and wife, Debra, Winfield; brother, Lael Fitzgerald, of Winfield; half brother, Duncan Fitzgerald, Aberdeen, Scotland; sister, Lasan Newton, of Odessa, Texas. She was preceded in death by her mother.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Kansas Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Opal Evelyn Merz

Opal Evelyn Merz, 89, Arkansas City, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at Medicalodge Post Acute Care Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at the Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Parker Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday. The family will greet friends from 7-8 p.m. Born Oct. 5, 1917, in Dewey, Okla., she was the daughter of Clinton D. and Nellie Marie Shelton Stigleman. She married Clarence Albert Merz on July 20, 1933, in Kay County, Okla. They lived in Newkirk, until moving to Cedar Vale in February 1943, where they farmed until moving to Arkansas City in 1970. Her husband died April 2, 1999. She was a member of the Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church. Survivors include her sons, Leon Merz and his wife, Mary, of Arkansas City, and Everett Merz and his wife, Sharon, of Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter, Marie Ann Norton and her husband, Bruce, of College Station, Texas; daughter-in-law, Merna Merz, Arkansas City; one brother, Eugene Stigleman, Elk City, Okla.; one sister, Mary Ann Cornelison and her husband, Jim, of Derby; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Clarence E. Merz and Allen Ray Merz; one brother, Leonard M. Stigleman; and two grandsons, Lance Dean Merz and Tyler Seth Merz.
Memorials have been established with the Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church or the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home or to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Patsy J. Owen

Patsy J. Owen, 74, Arkansas City, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at her home after a long battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at Miles Funeral Service. Private family interment will take place before the service. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. today. The family will greet friends during that time. Born Jan. 2, 1933, in Arkansas City, she was the daughter of Clarence Burwell and Neva Lucille (Head) Allen. She worked in the clerk's office at the Cowley County Courthouse and was secretary to the county manager when she retired in 2005. Survivors include her sons, Steven R. Leith, Arkansas City; daughters, Pam Holub, Lincolnville, Kan., 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Owen; her parents; and a son, Alan D. Leith.
A memorial has been established for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Henry Langdon Wells

Henry Langdon Wells, 89, Alfalfa Mill owner, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at Oxford United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Oxford Cemetery. Born Sept. 10, 1917, in Winnemucca, Nev., he was the son of Willis Wesley Wells and Edith Holstein Wells. He established Oxford Dehydrating Company where he worked for 57 years, during which time he invented the "Wells Weigher." Survivors include his wife, DeOna (Pelischek) Wells; two daughters, Janie Harris, Wichita, and Christine Kirchhoff, Overland Park; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret Butts.
A memorial has been established for the Oxford United Methodist Church, Oxford. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service, Oxford.

Wilma Joann "Jody" Loewe

Wilma Joann "Jody" Loewe, 70, Arkansas City, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at Harry Hynes Hospice Care in Wichita. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City. Pastor Vern Richerson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. tonight. She was born March 17, 1936, in Arkansas City, to James A. Palmer and Daisy A. (Richardson) Palmer. Jody was a homemaker. Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Brower, of Augusta; four brothers, Bud Palmer, DJ Palmer and Jerry Palmer, all of Arkansas City, Terry Palmer, of Forest Hills, Calif.; three sisters, Betty Quinn and Bonnie Calvin, both of Haysville, and Rebecca Main, of Romona, Calif.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albin G. Loewe; and infant sister, Sharon Palmer.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Mary Oller

Mary Oller, 88, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Maple City Cemetery.

Carol Ann Taton

Carol Ann Taton, of Parkersfield, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Internment will be in the Parker Cemetery, Carol was born Dec. 2, 1932, in Wellington, to Henry and Lucille (Anderson) Williams. Her father died when she was 5 years old. Her mother married Lynn Stiger a few years later and they moved to a farm north of Drury in Sumner County. She attended country schools and later graduated from South Haven High School in 1950. She also attended Arkansas City Junior College. On July 12, 1951, Carol married Ernest A. Taton in Bentonville, Ark. During their 55 years together they lived in Duncan, Okla., Cunningham, Kan., Tulsa, Okla., and Denver, Colo. They were living in Tulsa when they retired in 1991 and moved to Arkansas City. Carol was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion and VFW Women's Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, Ernest; two sons, Steven A. Taton and wife, Debi, of Wichita, and Bruce L. Taton and Jackie, Denver; seven grandchildren, Lyndie and Jerry Jackson, of Denver, Justin and Tracy Taton, Wichita, Jake Taton, of Denver, Josh Taton, of Los Angeles, Calif., Jennifer Taton, of Dallas, Cameran Taton, of Denver, and Kelsi Taton, Wichita; and one great-grand daughter, Hanna Jackson, Denver. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father; sister Donna L. Scott; and an infant granddaughter, Laine Brooke Taton.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman funeral home, Arkansas City.

Mark D. Williams

Mark D. Williams, Winfield, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, in Winfield. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Cremation has been effected. Born Sept. 3, 1969, in Glenview, Ill., he was the son of William Gregory and Marilyn Beth (Doran) Williams. He worked as a maintenance man for various apartment rentals in Madison, Wis. He later owned several rental properties in Winfield. Survivors include his wife, Jenny (Hayek) Williams, of the home; daughters, Emily and Allison, of the home; father, Greg Williams, of Winfield; brothers, Scott Williams, Winfield, Greg Williams and wife, Jackie, Chicago, Ill.; and Tim Williams, Gurnee, Ill. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Winfield City Park Commission, Island Park playground. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

John Gamsjager

John Gamsjager, 70, lifelong Newkirk resident, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at his home.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Timothy Reichenberger

Timothy Reichenberger, 74, Wellington, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at the Riverview Manor & Village in Oxford.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Wellington.

William Carson

William Carson, 88, of Oxford, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service.

Willard Lester Wise

Willard Lester Wise, 78, Arkansas City, died Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Ninnescah Cemetery near Udall. Willard was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Udall to Lawrence and Thelma (Jones) Wise. He was reared and educated in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School 1945. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1945 through 1948. During the time he was stationed in Germany, Willard met and later married Gabriele Thurmaier on March 3, 1948. The couple lived in Winfield several years before moving to Dexter in 1960. In Dexter, Willard was a successful business man owning the Dexter Hardware Store and Construction Company, and Dexter Liquor Store. Willard also worked as a farmer and owned and operated local cable companies in several small communities. Willard was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Dexter Civic Club. In 1998 the couple retired and moved to Arkansas City. Survivors include his wife, Elli of the home; a son, Aaron and his wife, Monica Wise, Arkansas City; a daughter, Karen Moser, Winfield; and two grandchildren, Rebecca and Simon Wise. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Katherin Huff, Honor Prothro, and Roma Mumford.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Laura Mae (Widner) Thiess

Laura Mae (Widner) Thiess, 81, died Friday, June 24, 2005, in a Woodland, Texas, rest home. Laura Mae was born in Arkansas City on May 22, 1924. Survivors include her two daughters, Linda-Allum, Douglass, Texas, and Lois Grimes, Montgomery, Texas; brothers, V.R Widner, Topeka, Cecil Widner, Kansas City, Kan., and Charles Widner, Utah; sisters, Lois Foust, Midwest City, Okla., and Ona Proberts, Silsbee, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Thiess; her parents; and one brother, Paul.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Klein Funeral Home, Tomball, Texas.

Helen Brickey Thompson

Helen Brickey Thompson died Wednesday, June 29, 2005, after a long illness. Cremation has been effected. Survivors include her mother, Irene Brickey, Arkansas City; sister and two brothers, Marjorie Campbell and Wallace Brickey, both of Arkansas City and Dale Brickey, Yukon, Okla.; a daughter and granddaughter, Elizabeth and Bella Aguillera of Staten Island, N.Y.
J.C. Carnathan

J.C. Carnathan, 83, a resident of Cedar Vale since February 1990, presently residing in Apple Valley, Minn., died Sunday, June 26, 2005. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2005, at the United Methodist Church in Cedar Vale. Born Jan. 20, 1922, in Wister, Okla., he was the son of Cortez and Alva Lola Carnathan. He and his wife purchased a fishing resort in Northern Minnesota which they operated until he suffered a heart attack and had to leave due to health. Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Mathews) Carnathan; son, James Christopher Carnathan; daughter, Janet Kay Karasch; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mattie Frances Summer and Mildred Fay Porter.
Memorials have been established for Peoples Place or the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church, Cedar Vale. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wheeler Funeral Home, Cedar Vale.

Marjorie Christie

Marjorie Christie, Arkansas City, died Monday, June 27, 2005, at Medicalodge East. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2005, in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Everett Andrew Malan

Graveside services for Everett Andrew Malan, 85, Arkansas City, who died Friday, June 17, 2005, were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2005, in Riverview Cemetery. The Rev. Ted Brown officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Audra Maxine Stark

Funeral services for Audra Maxine Stark, 100, who died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at the Central Christian Church. The Rev. Steve Chambers and the Rev. William Bowles officiated. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery. The eulogy was given by Jennifer Stark Fry. Vocalist was Lory Stark Hochwarth. Pianist was Stephen Butler. Casket bearers were Dr. Edgar L. Stark, Charles R. Fry, Philip Brown, Dr. William H. Stark, Orbie R. Overly and James E. Bossi.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
