Clarence Stevens

Clarence Stevens, 67, of Wellington, Kan., died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at the Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the United Methodist Church in Wellington with the Reverend Brent Clayton officiating. Burial will be in the Sumner Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from noon-8 p.m. at the Hawks Funeral Home in Wellington with the family receiving friends from 4-6 p.m. Clarence was born on Jan. 17, 1940, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Charles P. and Rosa Belle McWilliams Stevens. In 1957 Clarence joined the United States Navy where he served as a cook for two years. On Feb. 13, 1965, he was united in marriage with Margaret Beaman in Elk Point, S.D. Clarence drove a semi full time for 11 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting and collecting toy trucks. Clarence is survived by his wife, Margaret Stevens, of Wellington; sons, Alan Stevens, and his wife, Melanie, of Ida Grove, Iowa; and Michael Stevens, of Aurora, Colo.; daughters Connie Bromley, and husband Jeff, of Peterson, Iowa; and Leesa Ann Peters, and husband, Loren, of Nixia, Mo.; brothers Kenneth "Jerry" Walkerm and wife Mildred, of Carrol, Iowa, and David Walker, sister Ramona Scowden, of Cleveland, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his parents, brothers, Robert Stevens and Wirth Walker and sister, Violet.
A memorial has been established with the Care and Share Ministry of the United Methodist Church or the Kids Crusader Ministry. Contributions can be left with the Hawks Funeral Home, 704 N. Washington, Wellington, KS 67152. Arrangements are under the direction of Hawks Funeral Home of Wellington.

Cathryn Janette Marshall

Cathryn Janette Marshall, 72, Atlanta, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at her home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow in the Atlanta Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Monday. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Born Sept. 16, 1933, in Pittsburg, Ill., she was the daughter of Mason Gilbert and Izonia Beatrice (Fowler) Bridwell. She worked on the Wakefield Ranch, in Atlanta, Kan., with her husband and was a full time homemaker. Survivors include her husband, J.B., of the home; son, Gary Dean Marshall, Katy, Texas; daughters, Sherri Obermueller, Derby, and Karen Hughes, Atlanta; brother, James G. Bridwell, Edwardsville, Ill.; sister, Maxine Dawson, Glen Carbon, Ill.; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, D. Dean Bridwell and Richard D. Bridwell; and sister, Beth Crofoot.

Memorials have been established for the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Dorothy Marie May

Dorothy Marie May, 77, Winfield, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at William Newton Hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, in Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-7 p.m. Sunday. Born Jan. 27, 1928, in Moline, she was the daughter of Hubert Marion and Phoeba J. (Dye) Horn. She was a full time homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Richard, of the home; sons, Allen May, Winfield, and Gary May, Tulsa, Okla.; daughters, Samantha May, Wichita, Linda Gann, Winfield, and Cindy Czaplinksi, Arkansas City; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial has been established for Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Perry Arvin Klaassen

Perry Arvin Klaassen departed this world Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, almost seven years after he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Memorial Road Mennonite Brethren Church in Edmond, Okla. He was born Aug. 13, 1939, near Weatherford, Okla., to Rudolph and Edna Bushman Klaassen. His formal education began in a one-room country school from where he went to Weatherford Public Schools and then completed four years of high school at Corn Bible Academy, Corn, Okla. He graduated from Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kan., and from the University of Kansas, Kansas City, Kan., with a degree in medicine. Perry did his residency and received the master's degree in public health and tropical medicine from Tulane University, New Orleans, La. He was board certified in general preventive medicine. Perry's professional career began with a six-month stint as a public health officer at Gorgas Hospital, Panama Canal Zone, after completing internship. This was followed by three and one-half years of village medical work near Calcutta, India, as a U.S. government-approved alternative to combative service during the Viet Nam War. In 1973 he began a 31 year tenure as clinical director of Mary Mahoney Memorial Medical Center, Oklahoma City, Okla., and at various times he also served as chief executive officer. For the past three-and-one-half years he has served as clinical director for Central Oklahoma Integrated Network Services (COINS), soliciting physicians and hospitals to join efforts to care for the uninsured. Perry never sought fame or fortune but was recognized numerous times for his work with and on behalf of the poor and uninsured. Among these awards was the naming of the Mary Mahoney Memorial Health Center medical wing the Klaassen Medical Clinic. He was given the "Keepers of the Dream" award for exemplifying and making Dr. Martin Luther King's dream a reality in Oklahoma. Nationally he was recognized for his contribution to community-based health care with the Samuel U. Rodgers Achievement Award. His peers recognized his life's work this past May when he was awarded the Gordon H. Deckert, MD, Oklahoma State Medical Association Award for community service. His alma mater, Tabor College, bestowed on him the Merit Award because of his record of outstanding, devoted service to mankind in the public as well as church life. One of his passions in life was music. He was a member of Canterbury Choral Society for over 30 years and a devoted listener to NPR as well as music leader in his church, Memorial Road Mennonite Brethren Church. Perry will be remembered for his gentleness, kindness, compassion, and humility which cast calm and peace wherever he was. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Jeanie Vogt Klaassen; sons, Paul and wife, Lisa, of Arkansas City, and Matt and wife, Jenelle, of Mt. Albert, Ontario, Canada; grandchildren Heidi, Hannah and Pierce, of Arkansas City; two brothers, Dwight and Rolyn and their respective spouses, Sharon and Joyce; and sister-in-law, Joyce Hofer. One brother, Erwin, preceded him in death.
Memorials have been established for COINS, 3812 N. Santa Fe No. 122, Oklahoma City, OK 73118 or to Tabor College, Hillsboro, KS 67073. Arrangements are under the direction of the Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond, Okla.

Joyce C. (Herrman) Birdsell

Joyce C. (Herrman) Birdsell, 64, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at her home in Winfield. The Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mulvane. Burial mass will follow at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at the church. Interment will be in the Mulvane City Cemetery. Born Sept. 1, 1943, in Wichita, she was the daughter of Harry J. and Dorothy (Jacobs) Herrman. She had worked as a CNA at several nursing homes including Villa Maria in Mulvane and Good Samaritan Village in Winfield. Survivors include her daughters, Stephanie Wilson, Wichita, Michelle Birdsell-Mitchell, Kansas City, Mo., Kristine Birdsell, Wichita; sisters, Elizabeth Shea, Wichita, Juanita Farney, Haysville, Virginia Love, Mulvane, Jane King, Derby, Linda Bolster, Wichita; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister, Jeannine Herrman.
A memorial has been established for the Villa Maria Nursing Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Lois Margaret Hiebert

Lois Margaret Hiebert, 84, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the Kansas Masonic Home in Wichita. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, in Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-8 p.m. Friday. Born Feb. 6, 1923, in Hillsboro, Kan., she was the daughter of Menno Simon Harder and Katherine (Wiens) Harder. She was an artist and a beautician in Winfield, where she owned and operated Lois Beauty Shop until retirement. Survivors include her sons, Michael Hiebert, Wichita, Tim Hiebert, Houston; daughters, Suzanne Birch, Wichita, Sara McGuire, El Dorado; brother, LeLand Harder, North Newton; sister, Joan Kaufman, Winfield; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver, and a brother, Marvin Harder.
A memorial has been established for the Kansas Masonic Home Good Deeds Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Irene Venter

Irene Venters, 93, Sedan, formerly of Cedar Vale, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct, 20, 2007, at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan. Earl Tresner will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date. Cremation has been effected. Friends are welcome to sign the register book at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday. Born Oct. 11, 1914, in Maple City, she was the daughter of Edward and Ida May (Sullivan) Gassett. She grew up and attended school in Cedar Vale. She married Edward Venters in April 1935 in Newkirk. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1964. She lived in the Cedar Vale area all of her life and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Cedar Vale Baptist Church and the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include two daughters, Sonya Boothe and her husband, Richard, of Clearwater, and Shirley Mills, of Sedan; one sister, Nadine Ralston, of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; two sisters and one brother.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions to the People's Place of Cedar Vale or the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home of Sedan. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, Sedan.

Carlton Raymond Trexler

Funeral services for Carlton Raymond Trexler, 91, Arkansas City, who died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Arkansas City. Pastor Russell Fincham officiated. Interment was in the Parker Cemetery. Masonic rites were conducted by Crescent Masonic Lodge No. 133 AF&AM, Arkansas City. Organist was Melba Maechtlen. Vocalist was Nick Anzelmo. Casket bearers were Robben Ledeker, John Doughten, Joe Walker, Dennis Shurtz, Don Bennett and Don Shanks. Honorary casket bearers were Brother Masons.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Jerry L. Goff

Jerry L. Goff, 58, of Winfield, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at William Newton Hospital. Cremation has been effected. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Private inurnment will follow. Born June 30, 1949, in Winfield, Kan., he was the son of George O. and Freda M. (Jordan) Goff. He was raised and received his education in Winfield. Jerry began his career in construction with his father at Goff & Sons Construction and was later employed by other construction companies in the area. He was an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast. Jerry is survived by his daughter, Stacy Hayes, and her husband, Chris, of Douglass, Kan.; his brother, Kim Goff, of Wichita, Kan.; and his grandson, Allan Hayes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Goff.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kan.

Doris O. Thompson

Doris O. Thompson, 79, of Winfield, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 18, 2007, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at the Central Baptist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2007. The family will greet friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Born on July 8, 1928, in Russville, Ala., she was the daughter of Richard and Ruth (Fulton) McCulloch. She was raised and received her education in Russville. She moved to Wichita, Kan., in 1952 and worked in several drug stores as soda fountain manager. She was united in marriage on Jan. 12, 1965, to Roy M. Thompson, in Newkirk, Okla. The couple made their first home in Wichita. In 1967, they moved to Coffeyville, and in 1971 moved to Winfield. She worked at The Winfield Daily Courier in the circulation department and retired in 2000. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Winfield. Her hobbies included family reunions, flowers, playing bingo and slot machines. Doris is survived by her sons, Don Langdon, and his wife, Claudia, of Peachtree City, Ga., and Farris Thompson; her daughters, Linda Koonce, and her husband, Fred, of Winfield, Kan., Kay Bond, of Winfield, Kan., and Jackie Arndt, and her husband, Carl, of Winfield, Kan.; her brothers, Don McCulloch, and his wife, Mary Francis; her grandchildren, Michael, Julie, Tracy, David, Angela, Richard, Matthew, Kellie, Joshua, Jelinda, Erica, Carolyn, Carlye, Lori, Katrina, Kathleen, Stephanie, Cheryl, Kevin, David and Dan; her great-grandchildren, Madeleine, Kathleen, Jack, Sarah, Latisha, David, Michael, Tessa, Tristin, Carly, Tanner, Daltin, Kaela, Jessica, Jami, Kelsie, Jacob, Emileigh, Chase, Cetan, Graham, Morgan, Lindsay, Isaac, Sam, McKenzie, Shelbye, Jolie, Bailye, Brandon, Brittany, Ben, Brianna, Brilee and Tracy Don; and her great-great-grandchildren, Quinton and Annariah. She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 18, 2005; her parents; a son, Jerrol Thompson; a son-in-law, Jake Bond; and a brother, Cliff McCulloch.

Vernon C. Deets

Vernon C. Deets, 83, of Burden, died Thursday morning, Oct. 18, 2007, at the Dexter Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at the Burden United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the funeral home. The family will greet visitors from 1-2 p.m. Born on Aug. 26, 1924, in Portland, Kan., he was the son of Ray and Pearl (Supernaw) Deets. He was raised in Portland and Dexter, graduating from Dexter High School. On July 10, 1946, he married Ava L. Trobaugh in Winfield. The couple made their first home on a farm in rural Dexter and later in the Burden area. He retired from farming and ranching in 2000. He was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church since 1951. Vernon is survived by his wife; his son, Dale Deets, and his wife, Heather, of Burden; his daughter, Julie Hutchinson, and her husband, Raymond, of Arkansas City; his brother, Larry Deets, and his wife, Jackie, of Burden; his sisters, Doris Taylor, of Kingman, and Darlene Meece, of Dexter; his grandchildren, Stetson, Coty, Michelle, Rachele, John, Nicholas and Isaac; and his great-grandchildren, Nathan, Joshua, Hailey, Avisa, Macalie, Dakota, Jaden, Kayla and Ryann. In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by a brother, Donald; a sister, Donna; and a great-grandaughter, Lisa Marie.
Memorials have been established in Mr. Deets' name for the Burden United Methodist Church, Dexter Care and Center and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service of Winfield.

Margaret R. Hughes

Margaret R. Hughes, 77, of Dillsburg, Pa., died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at the Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, Pa. Services were Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, in the Cocklin Funeral Home, Inc., 30 N. Chestnut St., Dillsburg, Pa. Burial followed in the Dillsburg Cemetery-Mountain Road. A viewing was held Sunday at the funeral home. Margaret was born Oct. 15, 1929, in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Presston and Margaret (Yohe) Zeallor. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Arkansas City, Kan., and also the Dillsburg American Legion and VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons, Robert McDermitt, of Franklintown, and Barry McDermitt, of Lake Meade; two daughters, Barbara Black, of York Springs, and Glenna Riley, of New Oxford. She leaves six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Margaret was the widow of William Donald Hughes.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley, 1804 N. Sixth St., Harrisburg, PA 17102. Arrangements are under the direction of Cocklin Funeral Home in Dillsburg, Pa.

Merlene R. Hill

Merlene R. Hill, 85, of Arkansas City, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Estelle Dean (Kindler) O'Hair

Estelle Dean (Kindler) O'Hair, 81, of Arkansas City died in the early morning hours on Oct. 19, 2007, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit. Funeral services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church of Esbon, Kan. Burial will be with others of her family in the Esbon Cemetery, Esbon, Kan. Estelle was born May 8, 1926, at her home one-and-one-half miles east of Esbon, Kan., to George William Kindler and Mabelle Louisa (Morrow) Kindler. She received her early education at the Kindler School District #95 and graduated from Esbon High School in May 1944. She was united in marriage to Denny David O'Hair April 28, 1946, in Lebanon, Kan. Estelle took great pride in her two grandchildren. She enjoyed working in her geneology books, quilting and refinishing antique furniture. She is survived by her son, Steve O'Hair, and his wife, Trudy, of Arkansas City, Kan.; grandson Todd O'Hair, of Denver, Colo.; granddaughter Jennifer O'Hair, of Kansas City, Mo.; sister and brother-in-law Donna and Elden Hoffhines, of Arkansas City, Kan. Estelle was preceded in death by her husband, Denny; her parents; her three brothers, Roy, Merley and Harry; and four sisters, Ina, Vera, Iva and Betty.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. .

John William "Bill" Olsen

John William "Bill" Olsen, 85, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk with the Rev. James Hollifield officiating. Cremation has been effected. Bill was born Sept. 2, 1922, near Cedar Vale, Kan., the son of Nathaniel Tannie and Nannie (Johnson) Olsen. He grew up in the Hardy area and graduated from Newkirk High School. Following graduation, he became a full-time rancher. On Sept. 6, 1942, he and Edna Mae Barton were married at Foraker where they established their home. In 1958, he purchased the Newkirk Sale Barn, which he owned until he retired. Bill is survived by his children, Nan Drummond, of Pawhuska, Okla., Diane Shafer and J. B. Osen, both of Newkirk, Okla.; one brother, Larry Olsen, of Maple City, Kan.; one sister, Beatrice Harris, of Grainola; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jim, Bob and Melvin; one sister, Selma; and one grandson, Todd Drummond.
A memorial fund has been established with Hospice of North Central Oklahoma. Contributions may be made in Mr. Olsen's name through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service of Newkirk, Okla.

Patricia "Pat" Rochat

Patricia "Pat" Rochat, 61, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, Oct. 19, 2007, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. Private inurnment services will take place at a later date. The family will greet friends at Miles Funeral Service from 5-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22, 2007. Born June 8, 1946, in Wichita, Kan., she was the daughter of Clarence and Thelma (Bannister) Hine. She was raised and received her education in Wichita and graduated from South High School in 1964. Pat was united in marriage in 1979 to Lindsay Rochat and the couple moved to rural Udall. She retired from Boeing in 1993 following 18 years of service. The couple later moved to rural Winfield. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield where she served as custodian. Pat is survived by her husband; her sons, James Rochat, and his wife, Melva, of Oxford, Kan., Philip, of San Antonio, Texas, and Bryan Masten; her daughters, Rebecca, of the home, and Rachel Lankton, and her husband, Jeremy, of Winfield, Kan.; and her sisters, Charlene Rexroat, of Wichita, Kan., and Naomi Shenold, of Rose Hill, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial has been established in Pat's name with the First Presbyterian Church of Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service of Winfield.
