Graveside services for Donald Lee Wixon, 73, Arkansas City, who died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, in the Newkirk Cemetery with Pastor Robert L. Ferris of the Newkirk First Christian Church officiating. Military honors were by Spencer Ralston Post No. 1254 VFW, Arkansas City.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Bennett W. Emmons

Bennett W. Emmons, 95, Latham, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004 at the Beverly Nursing Home in Wellington. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday Jan. 8, 2004, at the Latham United Methodist Church in Latham, Kan. Interment will follow in the Latham Cemetery. Born Nov. 5, 1908, in Okeene, Okla., he was the son of Ira and Lulu Belle (Robertson) Emmons. He came to Latham in 1957 from Wichita. He farmed in Latham and worked for Beech Aircraft until his retirement. Survivors include his two daughters, Betty Nelson and Darlene Fry both of Arkansas City, Kansas; sons, Dudley Emmons of Cambridge, Roger Emmons of Towanda and Daryl Emmons of El Dorado; 21 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie (Stuteville) Emmons; two sons, Jerry and Keith; two brothers, two sisters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Hospice, Inc. Contributions may made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home, El Dorado.

Edgar Charles Whiteman

Edgar Charles Whiteman, 90, Haysville, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow in the Cambridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday. Born March 23, 1913, on a farm near Atlanta, Kan., he was the son of Charles and Mary (Stickel) Whiteman. He was employed at Boeing Aircraft in the tooling department as a jig builder, retiring after 35 years of service. Survivors include his son, Jerry W. Whiteman of Haysville; his twin-sister, Easter Gatton of Burden; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie A. (Carrier) Whiteman; his parents; a daughter, Sharon Kay German; a brother, Harlan Whiteman; and three sisters, Fern Grable, Pearl Lee and Mable McDonald.
A memorial has been established for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Betty June Harvey

Betty June Harvey, 80, Cogan Station, Pa., died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Williamsport Hospital. A Life Celebration Home service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 1-2 p.m. Friday. Born Sept. 24, 1923, in Hepburn, Township, Pa., she was the daughter of William F. and Bertha Burkholder Miller. Survivors include her husband, Alvin of Cogan Station; 10 children, Edward of Montoursville, Pa., Richard of Cogan Station, Daniel of Williamsport, Pa., Kenneth of Cogan Station, Caroline Yohe of Pennsdale, Pa., Wilson of Trout Run, Pa., Robert of Cogan Station, Byron of Center Valley, Pa., Glenn of Watsontown, Pa., Patricia Neufer of Williamsport; 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of the James C. Maneval Funeral Home, Ltd., Williamsport, Pa.

Christina Amber Creps

Christina Amber Creps, 21, resident of Shidler, Okla., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in Fairfax Cemetery with Rev. Corby Brizendine, pastor of First Baptist Church, Shidler, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday. The family will be at the home of Carol and Butch Johnston in Shidler. Christina was born Sept. 21, 1982, in Winfield. She is the daughter of Robert Leon Bob Creps of Arkansas City, Kan., and Carol Ann (Ross) Johnston of Shidler. Christina attended school in Arkansas City and Shidler. After graduating from high school, she attended Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City. Christina was a friendly person that had many friends of all ages and from all walks of life. She loved nature and being outdoors and taking her dog, Sandy, for car rides. Christina was an accomplished musician and played second chair flute in the Arkansas City Band under the direction of Gary Gackstatter. Survivors include her parents, Bob Creps and Carol Ann Johnston; step-dad, Harold Butch Johnston; one brother, James Bruce Johnson of Albuquerque, N.M.; one step-brother, Zachary Johnston; grandmother, Beatrice Tallchief of Fairfax; an aunt, Jo Ann Waller of Fairfax; one cousin, Cynthia Breshears of Cashion, Okla., two uncles, Kenneth L. Ross of Euless, Texas; and Don Ross of Canon City, Colo.; and several other relatives and cousins. She was preceded in death by three grandparents, Leon Austin Creps, Letha (Morgan) Ross, and Rex Ross; two cousins and several other relatives and cousins too numerous to mention.
Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel, Ponca City.

Ray H. Martin

Ray H. Martin, 78, Dexter, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Maple City Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. that evening. Born Oct. 30, 1925, on the farm that he now owns in rural Dexter, he was the son of Lee and Octavia (Weston) Martin. He enjoyed farming and ranching his entire life. They moved to Maple City and farmed for a time before he bought the Maple City General Store. The couple ran Martin's General Store until 1965 when they moved back to the farm at Dexter. Survivors include, his wife: Eula Mae (Bair) Martin of the home; sons, Mark Martin of Dexter and Dale Martin of Salado, Texas; daughters, Kathleen Beltz of Arlington, Va., and Denise Zimmerman of London, Ohio; brother, Lloyd Martin of Charleston, S.C.; sister, Dorothy Rahn of Arkansas City; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an uncle and one great-grandson.
A memorial has been established for the Dexter Masonic Lodge in Dexter. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Christine A. Starlin

Christine A. Starlin, 84, Oxford died at home on Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Oxford Funeral Service. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until service time. Born in Oxford on December 23, 1919, she was the daughter of Lute A. and Alma J. (Shore) Hatfield. Survivors include her sons Russell, Gerald and Marvin all of Oxford; her daughter, Gloria Weir of Topeka; brothers, Ralph Hatfield and Elmer Hatfield, both of Wichita, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with The Oxford Library. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service, Oxford.

Nadine Galbraith Mauk

Nadine Galbraith Mauk, homemaker, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Cochran Mortuary. Born at Melvern, Kan., March 16, 1919, she was the daughter of Roy and Etta Allison Galbraith. She was the department manager of children's wear for Hinkels Department Store in Twin Lakes and a docent at the Wichita Art Museum for 29 years. Survivors include her husband of sixty-two years, Eugene Mauk; daughter, Beverly Garner of Bedminster, N.J.; sons, Wyatt of Aurora, Colo., Merrill of Wheat Ridge, Colo., Britt of Wichita, KS and Reece of Hillsboro, Ore.; brother, J.R. Galbraith of Orlando, Fla.; and nine grandchildren. Nadine was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Edra Goodnight of California; brother, Bill Galbraith of Glendale, Calif., Harry Galbraith of Wichita; and one grandson.
Memorials have been established with the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202 or Fairview Christian Church, 1650 Fairview, Wichita, KS 67203. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cochran Mortuary, Wichita.

Carol Elanine (Warrington) Weidkamp

Carol Elanine (Warrington) Weidkamp, 52, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at the Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City, Nev. A memorial service will be held later at Hardtner Methodist Church in Hardtner. Inurnment will be in the Hardtner Cemetery at a later date. Cremation has been effected. Born Feb. 16, 1951, in Hardtner, she was the daughter of Harry and Pauline Warrington. She worked as a bookkeeper. Survivors include her sister, Ruth A. Hawkins of Wichita; brothers, Robert, Monte, Russell and Jerry of Hutchinson, David of Larned and Ron of Howard.
Arrangements are under the direction of the FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home, Gardnerville, Nev.

Percy M. Wilson

Percy M. Wilson, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Winfield Rest Haven Nursing Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Interment will be in the Burden Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Born Jan. 2, 1919, on a farm in Eaton, five miles south of Burden, he was the son of Mary (Shinn) and Robert (Bert) Wilson. He farmed with his father at Eaton and was employed as an aide at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. Survivors include his wife, Nita (Sumner) Wilson; one daughter, Martha Kelley of Winfield; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Marceil Johnson

Marceil Johnson, 83, longtime resident of Burden, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today. Born Nov. 23, 1920, in Burden, she was the daughter of Ralph and Hazel (Sheets) Bolack. She was employed by Barbour Collinson Abstract Company, before retiring due to health concerns. Survivors include her son, Lewis "Bud" Johnson of Midland, Texas; daughter, Pat Boyer of Iola; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland S. Johnson; her parents; and her brother, Thomas F. Bolack.

A memorial has been established for the Burden United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Nila June Dowell

Nila June Dowell, 78, formerly of Arkansas City, died Thursday (January 8, 2004) at her residence in Dodge City. Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Monday (January 12, 2004) at the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City. The Reverend Steve Chambers will officiate. Nila was born June 8, 1925 in Arkansas City to Dewey Admiral and Cecil (Dwyer) Benshoof. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City. She married Floyd E. Dowell on July 3, 1961 in Cherokee, Oklahoma. She worked in the paste up department for the High Plains Journal Survivors include two daughters Cecilia Ann Law of Dodge City, Kansas, Carolyn Sue Misegadis of Peyton, Colorado one brother Dewey Benshoof, Jr. of Hutchinson; one sister Louise Alsip of Arkansas City; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and one brother.
Arrangements are being made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral.

Ray Harold Martin

Ray Harold Martin, 78, of Dexter, died Sunday, January 4, 2004 at his home after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 9, 2004 at the Colonial Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment followed in the Maple City Cemetery. Ray was born October 30, 1925 to Lee & Octavia (Weston) Martin in Dexter. He attended Dexter and Arkansas City schools. On April 25 1948, he married Eula Mae Blair. He was the owner and operator of the Maple City General Store until 1965 when the couple moved back to Dexter. Throughout the years, Mr. Martin was very active in community functions. He was the past president of the Cowley County Farm Bureau, Cowley County Landowners Association, 4-H Achievement Fair, Dexter Civic Club. Casketbearers were his grandsons and nephews, Roger Bair, Don Henderson, Lucas Martin, Raymond Rahn, Brandon Zimmerman, Jason Zimmerman, Mark Zimmerman, and Thomas Zimmerman. Honorary Casketbearers were Homer Bair, Bob Bilyeau, Richard Mackey, Ross Sherwood, Ronnie Tousley, Orville Bair, Joe Kimberlin, Gerald Shaver, Bill Shields, Billy Weaver.
A memorial has been established in Mr. Martin's name for the Dexter Masonic Lodge.

Dorothy H. Dominick

Dorothy H. Dominick, 92, retired painter and wallpaper hanger, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Medicalodge East Healthcare Center in Arkansas City. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in the chapel of the Day Funeral Home with Brother Terry Vannoy officiating. Interment was in the Corzine Cemetery in Corbin. Born Oct. 20, 1912, in Caldwell, she was the daughter of Henry Struble and Flora Mae (Bankard) Struble. Survivors include her sister, Bessie Anderson of West Plains, Mo.; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred Dominick; a daughter, son, brother and a sister.
Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association, 837 South Hillside, Wichita, KS 67211 and Medicalodge East Healthcare Center, 203 East Osage, Arkansas City, KS 67005. Alva L. Hysom, Kanopolis

Alva L. Hysom, Kanopolis, 80, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Ellsworth County Medical Center in Ellsworth. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Ellsworth with Rev. Steve Hysom officiating. Private family interment prior to the service was held in Kanopolis Cemetery. Born Feb. 11, 1923, in Hutchinson, he was the son of Minnie Nelson and Bert Hysom. He was a retired United Methodist Church minister. Survivors include his wife, Audrey (Colvin) Hysom of Kanopolis; sons, Steve Hysom of El Dorado and Jerry Hysom of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters, Sue Utterback of Salina and Sandy Hysom of Wichita; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorials have been established with the Kanopolis United Methodist Church, Carneiro United Methodist Church, Ellsworth County Medical Center and the Ellsworth County Historical Society. Arrangements were under the direction of the Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Phyllis Jeanette Campbell Goatley Utt

Phyllis Jeanette Campbell Goatley Utt, 80, of Arkansas City died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Interment will follow in the Maple City Cemetery. Phyllis was born July 29, 1923, to Fred J. and Opal (Ames) Campbell in Hardy, Okla.. She attended King School in the Maple City area and later Arkansas City schools. In December of 1938, she married Ellis H. Goatley of Silverdale. He preceded her in death in June of 1985. She then married Wendell Utt of Wellington in October of 1989. He preceded her in death in July of 2001. Phyllis was the owner and operator of Campbell Goatley Grocery for many years. She was also a member of T.O.P.S. Survivors include two sons, James Goatley and wife, Susie, Howard Goatley and wife, Dianne, all of Arkansas City; grandchildren, Toby and Lela Goatley of Arkansas City, Teddy Goatley of Memphis, Tenn., Stephanie Goatley-Martin of Oklahoma City; great-grandchildren, Colby Goatley of Arkansas City, Darian and Shay Goatley-Martin of Oklahoma City and Lori Bechtel of Arkansas City; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to both husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, J.J. Goatley; sister, Bette White-Moore; and several aunts and uncles.
A memorial has been established with South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center Home Health Care. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City is in charge of the arrangements.

Phyllis J. Goatley Utt

Funeral services for Phyllis J. Goatley Utt, 80, Arkansas City, who died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home with Pastor Kendall Utt officiating. Interment was in the Maple City Cemetery. Casket bearers were Larry Goatley, Russell Lathers, Marvin McLaughlin, Gary Goatley, Colby Goatley and Jerry Peterson. Honorary casket bearers were Sterling Hatfield, Ben Goatley, Bob Barnett, Ted Lathers, Joe Elliott and Alvin Thompson.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
