Dorothy E. Carlson

Dorothy E. Carlson, 85, lifetime resident of Udall, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at the Udall Congregational Church in Udall. Interment will follow in the Udall Cemetery in Udall. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Born Dec. 9, 1918, in Douglass, she was the daughter of George and Anice (Miller) Willis. She worked in Winfield for Gibson's, Montgomery Ward and Litwins, where she was a retail sales clerk. Survivors include her daughters, Aletha Pearce of Salina and Carrie Graves of Claypool, Ind.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Carlson; her parents; brothers, Dick and Clifford John (Buster); and five sisters, Nina, Ida, Leona, Una and Mildred.
Memorials have been established for the Udall Congregational Church and the First Responders of Udall. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Verne O. "Mope" Wahler

Verne O. "Mope" Wahler, 83, Arkansas City, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Memorial graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in the Springside Cemetery in Arkansas City. There will be no visitation as cremation has been effected. Born on July 19, 1920, in Orlando, Okla., he was the son of Harry Otis and Flossie May Borel Wahler. He managed and later owned a chain of gas stations in California. Survivors include one son, Hugh Wahler of Agoura Hill, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia Lee (Gage); and one brother, Thigh Otis Wahler.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Pauline Gertrude (Donlay) Smith

Pauline Gertrude (Donlay) Smith died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Cedar Vale. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Maple City Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Born Feb. 13, 1921, in Ellenworth, Kan., she was the daughter of 0. W. and Nancy Melissa (Hamner) Donlay. On January 18, 1943, she married Everett Glen Smith in Sedan. They began their married life in Colorado Springs, Colo., while Glen was serving in the military. After WWII they moved southeast of Cedar Vale. She was a homemaker and worked side by side with Glen operating their cattle and hog operation. She was a loving wife and mother. She was a 4-H leader, member of Hewins HDU, member of Cedar Vale Methodist Church, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 44 years. In her later years she joined Glen as a professional horseshoe pitcher and she won her class division in the world championship in 1990 at Atlanta, Ga. Survivors include her husband, Glen of the home; one son, Rickey and wife, Joyce of Guymon, Okla.; one daughter, Glenda and husband, Charles Getchell of Chanute; one granddaughter, Dr. Michelle Bergner and husband, Brandon of Bryant, Ark.; one stepgranddaughter, Natalie and husband, Todd Kemmerly of Tulsa, Okla.; one stepgrandson, Michael Kemmerly; brother, Aaron Donlay of Arkansas City; one sister, Leona Newton of Springfield, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jesse, Herman, Harold, Richard, Glen and twin brother, Paul; and sisters, Loveta and Velma.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the People's Place of Cedar Vale. Contributions should be made through the funeral home, 608 Chestnut, Cedar Vale, KS 67024. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wheeler Funeral Home, Cedar Vale.

Cindy Lynn Parkerson

Cindy Lynn Parkerson, 47, a resident of Burden and Wilmot, Kan., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at her mother's home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Wilmot, Kan., Cemetery. The family will hold a private viewing. Born December 17, 1956, in Harper, she was the daughter of Virgil and Nina Patricia "Pat" (McBride) Jenkins. Cindy had various jobs, such as Rubbermaid in Winfield for 3 years. Most recently she was self-employed until she retired in January of 2003. Survivors include, her son: Justin Payne of Augusta; daughters, Tara Hying of Andover, Krista McLaughlin of Augusta and Karen Brewer of Augusta; her mother and father, Pat and Virgil Jenkins of Winfield; brothers, Don Parkerson of College Station, Texas, and Jeff Jenkins of Winfield; sisters, Mimi Campbell of Winfield and Hilary Jenkins of Augusta; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jesse and Lois Parkerson and Frank and Nina McBride.
A memorial has been established to help defray the cost of funeral expenses. Contributions may be made to the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Nila June Dowell

Graveside services for Nila June Dowell, 78, Dodge City, who died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, in Riverview Cemetery with Rev. Steve Chambers of the Central Christian Church officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

William Henry Goatley, Jr.

William Henry Goatley, Jr., 59, Wichita, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, in the Silverdale Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday. Born April 11, 1944, in Rosenburg, Ore., he was the son of William Henry and Pearl Wolfkill Goatley, Sr. He had worked at the Acme Foundry in Blackwell, Okla., and for H.J. Born Stone Company in Silverdale for several years. Survivors include his wife, Martha Ellen (Hankins) Goatley of Arkansas City; two stepsons, Eugene Earl Sedam of Arkansas City and Curtis Lewayne Sedam of Ponca City, Okla.; two brothers, Edward Goatley of Lawrence and David Goatley of California; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Margie Goatley; one sister, Ella Goatley; an infant brother; two stepsons, Marion Sedam and Keith Timothy Sedam; and one stepdaughter, Jewellen Sedam.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Vera Etta Batdorf

Vera Etta Batdorf, 94, Dexter, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at the First Christian Church in Dexter. Interment will follow in Dexter, Kan., Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Born Oct. 4, 1909, in Silverdale Township in Cowley County, Kan., she was the daughter of John and Lillie (Alsip) Tousley. She was reared and educated in many places such as, Hewins, Kan., and Grainola, Barnsdall and Newkirk, Okla. After she finished her schooling, she continued to help raise her siblings. Vera also enjoyed playing the piano at barn dances with her father. On January 25, 1925, in Grainola, Okla., she married Ben J. Batdorf. The couple made their home in Dexter. To this union 11 girls were born. She was a devoted wife and mother to her family. When her children were raised, she began employment as a cook for the Dexter School System. She loved her work and after 12 years she retired. On July 8, 1974, Ben preceded her in death. Vera was a member of the Dexter Christian Church and enjoyed traveling in her later years. She was also a member of the Dexter Senior Citizens Center and involved with the Quilting Bee at the church. For the past ten years, she has resided at the Dexter Care Center. Survivors include, seven daughters, Rosalie Hain, Carol Sue "Susie" Kincaid and Kay Batdorf all of Arkansas City; Velma Stilley of Carthage, Mo.; Alice Batdorf, of Dexter; Betty Landes and Margaret Karcher both of Webb City, Mo.; her brother, Dale Tousley of Newkirk; sisters, Anna Cody of Cedar Vale and Mary Parker of Lawton, Okla.; 28 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four daughters, Mary Lee Batdorf, D. Etta Wallace, Audine Huntington and Melba Barber; four brothers, Sterling, Johnny, Bill and an infant brother, Oral Hume; two sisters, Della Wilson and Dollie Burton; and five grandchildren.
Memorials have been established for the Dexter Care Center and Dexter Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Spencer Whitley

Spencer Whitley, 50, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at William Newton Hospital. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-8 p.m. Thursday. Born July 23, 1953, in Red Cloud, Neb., he was the son of Le Roy Robert and Ila Merle (Ritter) Whitley. He started work at Boeing Aircraft as a mod mechanic in 1978 and worked there until his death. Survivors include his wife, Louise (Leimkuhl) Whitley of the home; sons, Rhett and Robert Whitley, both of the home; and daughters, Katie, Caroline and Connie Whitley, all of the home. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline; and brother, Robin.
A memorial has been established with Whitley Children's Fund at Commercial Federal Bank in Winfield. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Danny Stewart

Danny Stewart, 41, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Tulsa Regional Medical Center. Memorial services were held Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Reynolds Funeral Home in Tulsa. Private graveside services will be held in the Silverdale Cemetery at a later date with Rev. James Newman officiating. Cremation has been effected. Born Dec. 6, 1962, in Bartlesville, Okla., he was the son of LeRoy and Elaine (Sparks) Stewart. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Jack and Elaine Bumgardener of Burden; brother, Rick and wife, Terry Stewart of Arkansas City; sisters, Cricket and husband, Dale Keilhorn of Burden, Sunshine and husband, Ron Fortner of Arkansas City, Keli and husband, Lance Patterson of Ponca City and Tara Burr of Wichita; 14 nieces and nephews and six great-nieces and nephews; and maternal grandmother, Agatha Sparks of Marysville. He was preceded in death by his father.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Reynolds Funeral Home, Tulsa.

Judith Ann "Judy" Abbott

Judith Ann "Judy" Abbott, 68, of Newkirk, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004 at her home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan 16, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Newkirk with Rev. Rob Boss officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. The casket will be open for viewing only at the funeral home on Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Born Oct. 3, 1935, in Indianapolis, Ind., she was the daughter and eldest of 10 children of Chester and Doris (Jackson) Carrico. While living in Ft. Worth, Texas, she was employed as a waitress for many years. She moved to Newkirk in 2001. Survivors include one daughter, Christina "Tina" Bedore of Peckham; two brothers, Earl and Chester, and six sisters, Barbara, Rosie, Phyllis, Margaret, Patty and Martha, all of the Indianapolis area; three grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Dianna Mae Spencer

Dianna Mae Spencer, 55, of Winfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at her home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may sign a register book at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Dianna was born on June 27, 1948, in Portsmouth, Va., to Lela (Bratton) and James Randolph Coker. Growing up in a military family, she received her education in several places. She graduated from Louisburg High School in 1967. In 1976 she moved to Winfield. She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at Snyder Clinic and William Newton Hospital from the late 1970s to the late 1990s. She gathered a wealth of friends through the years. Her home was open to those who needed a place to call home, and she will be greatly missed. Her hobbies included her family, cooking, reading and fishing. Survivors include two sons, their wives and children, Dale and Tawni Spencer; Ty and Torri, Mulvane, and Jim and Kelly Spencer, Noah and Nathan, Milton, Fla.; her mother and stepfather, Lela and Delbert Morgan, Arkansas City; and five brothers, Charlie Coker, Owasso, Okla., Harley Coker, Eddie Coker and Paul Coker; all of Milton, Fla., and Rick Coker, Radcliff, N.Y. Dianna was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Jim Coker.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Bill D. Fildes

Bill Dean Fildes, 70, formerly of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at his home in Ponca City after a short illness. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Jesse Kindred will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City. The family will greet friends at the funeral home today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bill was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Peru, Kan., to Everett and Audine (Lawrence) Fildes. He attended school in Cedar Vale. Bill moved to Arkansas City in 1949. Bill's career began in the automotive business when he bought out O.D. Martin in 1960. Later Bill and his partners Willis Weisenberger and Jim Hollenbach bought a Dodge-Plymouth dealership. He sold his interest to his partners in the mid 1960's when he was activated by the National Guard reserves. Bill served as company commander of the Kansas National Guard unit of Arkansas City. He was activated twice during his service with the National Guard; he later retired from the reserves as a Lt. Colonel. A prominent businessman in the Cowley County area all of his life, Bill established the first quick stop store in Ark City before any of the other franchises had come to this area. He was part of the group of Arkansas City businessmen that refurbished the old Newman Building and of another group that developed the Country Club Estates. He developed much of the commercial property along north Summit Street. Bill had an avid interest in new businesses and was helpful and supportive to a number of young business people during his long and successful career. He was a longtime member of the Ark City Country Club, AC Industries, the Crescent Lodge No. 133 AF&AM of Arkansas City, the Wichita Consistory, Midian Shrine, VFW and American Legion, and past-president of the Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Judy of the home; daughters Shelby Fildes of Wichita, Susan Cherry of Longview, Texas; one stepdaughter Sherri Carrier of Tulsa, Okla.; one brother, Bob Fildes of Sedan; grandchildren Kechia and her husband Matt Lake of Olathe, Luke Larson of Arkansas City, Amanda and Levi Cherry both of Longview, Texas; great-granddaughter Sydney Lynn Lake of Olathe. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Billy Fildes; a daughter, Sandra Fildes; and a granddaughter, Kari Probst.
A memorial has been established with the Kidney Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Kasey Allen Voth

Kasey Allen Voth, 21, of Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City. Pastor Larry Womacks and The Reverend Danny Daniel will officiate. Cremation has been effected. Kasey was born Sept. 30, 1982, in Winfield, the son of Kim D. and Linda D. (Lemman) Voth. He was reared and educated in Arkansas City from kindergarten through high school graduating in 2001. He especially enjoyed playing soccer, refereeing youth soccer, and Debate while in high school. He attended Cowley College for one year on a Debate Scholarship before transferring to Kansas State University majoring in Law and Criminology. His plans included serving his country in the military after the completion of his degree. He had enlisted in the Army Reserves in March of 2003. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City and had also attended the Maple City Community Church. Survivors include his parents, Kim and Linda; one brother, Kipp, all of the home; grandmother, Barbara Voth of Oakley; stepgrandfather and grandmother, Jim and Lois Pike of Sharon Springs; grandfather and grandmother, Ivan and Colleen Lemman of Tribune; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harvey H. Voth. A Debate Scholarship in Kasey's name has been established at the Arkansas City High School.
Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City, Kansas.

Julia A. Lindley

Julia A. Lindley, 67, Winfield, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at William Newton Hospital. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in the Akron Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today. The family will greet friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Born June 13, 1936, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Harry and Florence (Reuther) Ireton. She was a waitress, working in many restaurants in Winfield over the years, including managing the American Legion. Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Gazaway of Wichita; twin brother, Jim Ireton of Colorado; sister, Ruth Finley of Douglass; brother, Bob Ireton of Winfield; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Joe Lindley and her brother, Mike Ireton.
A memorial has been established for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Doris Anita Davis

Doris Anita Davis, 78, of Arkansas City, formerly of Oklahoma City, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at the Via Christi Medical Center - St. Francis Campus of Wichita. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church. Cremation has been effected. Doris was born May 29, 1925, in Arkansas City to Fred and Julia Marie (Logan) Shipp. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1943. Doris married Paul D. Davis in October of 1968 in Durant, Okla. The couple made their home in and around Oklahoma City until 1994. Doris worked as a legal secretary for many years including in the Court of Criminal Appeals for the State of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City. Survivors include her husband, Paul of the home; two sons, Fred Morris of Silver City, N.M., and Jeff Morris of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Vera Etta Batdorf

Funeral services for Vera Etta Batdorf were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at the Dexter Christian Church in Dexter with Rev. Norman Reeves officiating. Interment was in Dexter, Kan., Cemetery. Casket bearers were Donald Cassaw, Brad Hain, Rory Karcher, Kenny Kincaid, Mickey Kincaid, Scott MacLaughlin and Allen Stilley. Honorary casket bearers were Benny Cassaw, Eldon Hain, Randy Hain, Mark Huntington, Tommy Kincaid, Bill Stilley, Bill Wallace and Jim Wallace.
Arrangements were under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.
