Guy Raymond Brewer

Guy Raymond Brewer, 90, formerly of Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Norman Reeves will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. Guy was born April 26, 1916, in Hennessey, Okla., to Thomas and Ethel (Rounds) Brewer. The family moved to Jennings, Okla., and then to western Kansas before settling in Arkansas City in the early 1930s. Guy graduated from ACHS with the class of 1937. On Jan. 7, 1941, he married Mildred. V. Gray in Wellington, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 1984. Guy joined the Army and served in the European theater throughout WWII. He worked for many years for the local meat packing company, retiring from Rodeo Meats in 1983. Guy was a member of Central Christian Church for over 70 years. After retirement and the death of his wife, Guy joined Toastmasters to overcome his fear of public speaking. He taught many adults to read through the Literacy Project at CCCC. He also learned Reflexology, and gave treatments for several years. He delivered Friendship Meals for the Arkansas City Senior Center until he was 87. Guy was a member of the Rodeo Key Club and the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Arlene Jones, Janet Ehrhorn, Alan Reed and Tom Reed, all of California, Carl Brewer, of Tulsa, Bill Gray, of Kingston, Okla., Jean Buzzard of Hutchinson, and Carol Gray Smith, Arkansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Edward Brewer and Henry Brewer; three sisters, Rose Reed, Gladys Kimball and Sadie Mullet; and a nephew, Donald Brewer.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Ottilia "Tillie" Stevens

Ottilia "Tillie" Stevens, 86, Winfield, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at the William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be at 2 p.m. in the Calvery Catholic Cemetery in Wichita. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, at Sacred Heart. Born April 14, 1920, in Ness City, Kan., she was the daughter of John and Catherine (Leiker) Weilert. She had worked in the meat department in a grocery store in Detroit, Mich. Survivors include her husband, Asa Stevens of the home; sons, Bob Hill, Aurora, Colo., John Hill, Wayne, Mich.; sisters, Virginia Linnebur, Winfield, Forence Hoskinson, Las Cruces, N.M.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Preston C. Hill, 11 brothers and seven sisters.
A memorial has been established for the Holy Name School. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Nida L. Arnold

Nida L. Arnold, 89, Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Nida was born Nov. 18, 1917, in Wellington, to Haynes Edward Butler and Bessie Frances (Lewis) Butler. Nida worked for a book publishing company in Tennessee. Survivors include her sister, Doris Crandall, of Arkansas City. Nida was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Durward Butler and Gordan Butler.
A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army. Contributions may be made though the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Rodney "Rod" W. Scott

Rodney "Rod" W. Scott, 46, of Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Independence, Kan., with Father Stephen Mahn Thapwa officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Newkirk. Friends may call at the funeral home until 7 p.m. today. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Rodney was born March 5, 1960, in Arkansas City, to Lynn and Betty (Lamb) Scott. He was the parts manager for O'Malley's Equipment Company in Independence. Survivors include his wife, Janet (Shannon) Scott, of the home; parents, Lynn and Betty Scott, Newkirk; two stepsons, Aaron Meyer and Dustin Meyer; a brother, Thomas Scott, Newkirk; and a sister, Lynda Eisenhauer, Newkirk; and five stepgrandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the Harry Hines Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202. Arrangements are under the direction of the Potts Chapel, Independence, Kan.

Lucile L. (Currie) Mathews

Lucile L. (Currie) Mathews died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. today. Born Feb. 28, 1925, in Topeka, she was the daughter of John and Roma Currie. She was a secretary for the Fine Arts Department of Southwestern College. Survivors include her sons, Geoff Mathews, Mansfield, Ma., and Mike Mathews, Wichita; and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.R. (Bob) Mathews and an infant daughter.
A memorial has been established for Alzheimer and Related Disesases. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Rachel Mae "Aunt Rae" Thompson

Rachel Mae "Aunt Rae" Thompson, 93, longtime Newkirk resident, died Saturday night, Jan. 27, 2007, at her home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk with the Rev. James Hollifield officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Kaw City. The family will be at the Jim Deakins residence, 406 N. Cedar St., Newkirk. Rachael Mae Thompson was born Nov. 5, 1913, in Hominy, Okla., the daughter of Victor and Lucy Mae (Moody) Dunger. Her employment history included McClellan's in Arkansas City, and Shawn Manor in Ponca City where she worked for 23 years and retired in her mid 80's as dietary supervisor. Survivors include two sisters, Marie Dunger and Dolly Meeks, both of Wichita, and nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Sparlin Thompson; her parents; one sister, Viola Deakins; and three brothers, George, Bob and Leroy Dunger.
A memorial fund has been established with Faith Hospice. Contributions may be made through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468. Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk, is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas A. Thomson

Thomas A. Thomson, 97, of Arkansas City, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at the Medicalodge East in Arkansas City. Private family services will be held in Kansas City, Mo. Thomas was born Nov. 6, 1909, in New Franklin, Mo., to Thomas F. Thomson and Anna S. (Bethke) Thomson. He attended New Franklin, Mo., schools as a youngster. Thomas served in the United States Navy during World War II and later married his wife, Billie. Thomas ran the lunch counter for Katz Drug Store and later owned the Copper Kettle in Kansas City. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Survivors include his two nephews, Robert Foster, Arkansas City and Aubrey "Bud" Foster, of Houston, Texas; and five great nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Marvin Dean Rains

Marvin Dean Rains, 64, Ulysses, Kan., died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital, in Ulysses. There will be no visitation or funeral services. Cremation has been effected. Born April 29, 1942, in Wellington, he was the son of Ralph Theodore and Evelyn Edith (Miller) Rains. He was a truck driver. Survivors include seven daughters, Dianna Ingram, Arkansas City, Gail Alvord, Arkansas City, Veronica Twilleger, of Fredericktown, Mo., Margaret Geary, Douglas, Wyo., Deloris Wilson, Arkansas City, Tammie Rains, Arkansas City, Melissa Rains, Arkansas City; two sisters, Barbara Carter, Temple, Texas and Delores Drake, Ulysses; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses.

Charles Brown

Charles Brown, 77, Newkirk resident, died early Monday morning, Jan. 29, 2007, in the Ponca City Nursing and Rehab Center.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Wilma June Doyle

Wilma June Doyle, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, in Riverview Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Jim Doyle, Wichita; daughters, Debbie Hines, Winfield, Tawana Rohrs, Arkansas City, Winona With, Cowden, Ill.; son, Cody Hines, Drexell, Mo.; sister, Erma Licudine, Los Angeles, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Cora Fox; brothers, Joe, Jewel, Caselle, and Calvin; sisters, Carrie and Freeda.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cochran Mortuary, Wichita.

Mildred J. Boomershine

Mildred J. Boomershine, 86, of Oxford, formerly of Winfield, Kan., died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at the Riverview Manor in Oxford, Kan. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, in the Douglass Cemetery in Douglass, with Pastor Tom Hawks officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Mildred was born on Aug. 14, 1920, in Douglass, the daughter of Arthur and Lillie Oliver Lee. Survivors include her two sons, Gary Boomershine, of Wichita, and Ronald Boomershine, Haysville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Garold; two sons, Melvin and Bobby Boomershine.
A memorial has been established with the United Cerebral Palsy Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service, 104 N. Main, Oxford, KS 67152.

Jeanette Minkler

Jeanette Minkler, 44, Winfield, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at her home. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield. Cremation has been effected. Born Aug. 15, 1962, in New Port News, Va., she was the daughter of John and Darla (Koehn) Minkler. She worked at Binney & Smith Crayola in Winfield as a material handler until the plant closed. She began work at the Winfield Correctional Facility as a store keeper senior and worked part time at the Kaw Casino in Newkirk. Survivors include her brothers, John Minkler, Winfield, and Larry Minkler, Shawnee, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Wayne.
A memorial has been established for the Make A Wish Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Rev. Tony R. Horsley

Rev. Tony R. Horsley, 58, Downs, Kan., died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at the Methodist Church. Cremation has been effected. He was born Feb. 3, 1948, in Sulfur, Okla. He was a minister. Survivors include his sons, Chris Horsley, Wake Forest, N.C., and David Horsley, Solomon, Kan.; daughters, Katrina Mason, St. George, Kan.; brother, Wayne Horsley, Denton, Texas; and eight grandchildren.
Memorials have been established for the Tony R. Horsley Memorial Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Domoney Funeral Home, 817 Morgan Ave., P.O. box 127, Downs, KS 67437

James D. "Buster" Hartman

James D. "Buster" Hartman, 53, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at the Lexington Place Nursing Home in Richland Hills, Texas.
Funeral services are pending and under the direction of Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Robert Louis "Bob" Coleman

Robert Louis "Bob" Coleman, 80, Tulsa resident, formerly of Newkirk, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at his Tulsa home. Graveside services and internment will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2007, in the Newkirk Cemetery. The Rev. Diana Hartman will officiate. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the College Hill Presbyterian Church, in Tulsa. Born Dec. 23, 1926, at home in Newkirk, he was the son of John Hoffman Coleman and Gertrude (Louis) Coleman. He was employed for Chapman, Barnard, McFarlind, Leta M. Chapman, their estates, and Rogers and Bell Law Firm until retirement. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth Louise "Betty" (Shinn) Coleman; his son, Louis Coleman of Tulsa; daughter, Mary Cassen of Wills Point, Texas.; four grandchildren; one sister, Mary Frances Jones, of Wichita; one brother, John Hoffman Coleman, of Spartanburg, S.C. He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Kendall-Whittier Ministry, Inc., P. O. Box 4165, Tulsa, OK 74159, or College Hill Presbyterian Church, 712 S. Columbia Ave., Tulsa, OK 74104. Arrangements are under the direction of the Moore's Rosewood Chapel of Tulsa. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Mary Oller

Mary Oller, 88, Arkansas City, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Chaplain Norman Reeves will officiate. Interment will follow in the Maple City Cemetery. Mary was born Oct. 23, 1918, in Duston, Okla., to Bruce and Isabelle (Burns) Hooper. She was reared and educated in Duston and Okmulgee, Okla. She married Boyd Oller and the family lived in Hoffman, Okla., for many years. Mary worked as a sales clerk in a newsstand in Ponca City for several years. Survivors include three nieces and three nephews, Laurabelle and Carl Wayne Bernard, Darlene and Joan Talamantes, Floyd Jennings Jr. and Dale Jennings. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Boyd; three sisters, Betsy Bernard, Estelle Talamantes and Winnie Jennings; and a brother, Hughie Hooper.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Waine L. Jones

Waine L. Jones, 81, Winfield, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Satruday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The family will greet friends following the service at the American Legion, 115 W. 10th, Winfield. Born Aug. 15, 1925, in Sedan, he was the son of Earl E. and Jessie L. (Moreland) Jones. He was a trooper for the Kansas Highway Patrol and after retirement served as District Magistrate Judge for Chautauqua County. Survivors include his son, Richard Jones, Dewey, Okla.; daughters, Jenny Loyd, Winfield, and Jolene Yelken, Vashon, Wash.; brother, Richard E. Jones, Independence, Kan.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anita (Cole) Jones and his parents.
A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.
