Larry Joe Dobson

Larry Joe Dobson, 67, of Winfield, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 8, 2009, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 -5 p.m. Sunday. Born Oct. 18, 1941, in Winfield, he was the son of Donald Eugene and Winifred Earl (Shepherd) Dobson. After 28 years of service with the United States Army, Larry retired as a master sergeant and was honorably discharged. They moved to Germany later in 1982, where Larry served with N.A.T.O. from 1982 to 1986. Survivors include his sons, Thomas Dobson, of Kansas City, Mo., Jerry Dobson, of Lenexa, and Ken Dobson, of Pasadena, Md.; his sisters, Marcia Elouise Wurtz, of Tulsa, Dona Dick, of Iowa, and Cheryl Dobson, of Winfield; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ingeborg Scheider Dobson; his parents; and a brother, Steven Clark.
A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Johnna Patrice Weber

Johnna Patrice Weber, 43, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. The Rev. James Newman will officiate. Interment will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Johnna was born Sept. 21, 1965, to Billy M. McFarland and Patricia A. (Miller) McFarland in Fontana, Calif. She served in the United States Navy for 10 years. On Jan. 1, 1998, she married James A. Weber. She was employed at the C-Store on the Kansas-Oklahoma border. Survivors include her husband, James Weber, of the home; daughter, Crystal Rose Brown, and her husband, Michael, of Arkansas City; daughter, Victoria Dawn Weber, of Claremore, Okla., son, Vincent Dean Weber, daughter, Adrianna Lynn McFarland, twin son, Shawn Burton Weber, twin daughter, Rebecca LeAnn Weber, all of Arkansas City; mother, Patrcia McFarland, of Arkansas City; brothers, Troy McFarland, and wife, Lisa, of El Cajon, Calif., Shane McFarland, and wife, Chasta, of Fayetteville, Ark.; three grandchildren, Kyle, Joesph and Amadahy Brown; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Johnna was preceded in death by her father.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Eleanor Stanton Farrar

Eleanor Stanton Farrar, 91, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at her residence. The Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, and a Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, both at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Arkansas City. Father Charles Siewert will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. Eleanor was born Feb. 7, 1917, to William Patrick Stanton and LaVeta (Reilly) Stanton in Coffeyville, Kan. At the age of 2, her family moved to Arkansas City. She attended Arkansas City schools, graduating from the high school in 1935. She continued her education at the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in arts and sciences in 1939. On Dec. 12, 1942, she married William Hunter Farrar in Arkansas City where the couple made their home. Eleanor was a homemaker. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and active in various capacities within the church. She was a member of the Altar Society and church choir. She was a longtime member of P.E.O., and was initiated into Chapter GH of the P.E.O. in Arkansas City in 1947. In recent years, she was honored as a Golden Girl with more than 50 years in the organization. In addition, she was active in numerous civic organizations. She served on the board of the Denton Art Center as well as volunteering many hours with the Arkansas City Area Arts Council. Her real passion, though, was her family and her countless friends. There was no end to what she was willing to do for them. She was a most loving mother to her five children and a friend to many. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Eleanor is survived by her sons, William H. Farrar Jr., and his wife, Patricia May, of Denver, Colo., Richard Foss Farrar, of Arkansas City, Thomas R. Farrar, of Houston, Texas, John S. Farrar, of Bartlesville, Okla.; daughter, Deborah Farrar Quirk, and her husband, William, of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Mary E. Jones, of Great Falls, Va.; grandchildren, David Farrar, Alana Lively, Jennifer Leggett, James Farrar, Kathleen Quirk and Emily Quirk; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1989 and two brothers, Robert J. Stanton and William P. Stanton.
A memorial has been established with the Sacred Heart Catholic School, 302 South B St., Arkansas City, KS 67005. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City is in charge of the arrangements.

Imogene Mae Olinger

Imogene Mae Olinger, 85, of Rogers, Ark., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at her daughter's home in Rogers, after a 21-year battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held in mid-summer. Cremation has been effected. She was born Feb. 15, 1923, in Chanute, Kan., the daughter of Lloyd Clarence and Fannie May (Hunt) Saar. She attended Arkansas City High School then married Joseph John Olinger on Dec. 24, 1939. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary last Christmas Eve. She was a lifelong domestic engineer. The Olinger's lived in Arkansas City from 1939-1942. Imogene and her mother, Fannie, founded the Arkansas City, Kan., Friendly Neighbors Club in 1941. The club still exists. She loved and enjoyed her family tremendously. Her hobbies consisted of playing family games, flowers, reading, e-mailing and "keeping in touch." She is survived by her husband, Joe; daughter, Deanie Olinger, of Leawood, Kan.; sons, Douglas Olinger and Dan Olinger and wife Susan, of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren, Scott Olinger, Kimberly Fitch, Gregory Olinger, Adena Fritz and Mandy Gosney; great-grandchildren, Josh and Bret Ballentine, Nathan Fitch, Alex Houk, Eli, Madison, and Gabriel Gosney. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Saar; a sister, Jacqueline Osburn; a niece, Joan Long; and nephew Teryl McKnight.
Memorials may be made to Hope Lodge, 1120 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, MO 64105. Arrangements are under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home of Rogers, Ark.

Eldon Louis Bergeson

Eldon Louis Bergeson, 64, of Winfield, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, Kan. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at the Grandview United Methodist Church. Interment will be held at 4 p.m. at the Crooked Creek Cemetery in Riley, Kan. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. at Miles Funeral Service on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009. There will be a special time for sharing remembrances at 7 that evening. Born on Oct. 23, 1944, in Leonardville, Kan., he was the son of Louis and Eleanor (Berg) Bergeson. He retired from Natural Gas Pipeline in 1998 and moved to Winfield. He is survived by his wife, Donna, of Winfield; his daughters, Kristin Bergeson Gasser, of Grafton, Wis., Donelle Bergeson Sommer, of Chicago, Ill., Bianca Dawn Alvarez, of Dodge City, Kan., and Candice Marie Bergeson, of Winfield, Kan.; his sister, Shirley Martin, of Osage City, Kan.; and his grandchildren, Grace and Josephine Gasser, Eymber, Orion and Anthem Sommer, Marixsa and Trinidad Alvarez, and Kyan Towles. In addition to his parents, Eldon was preceded in death by his daughter, Sheryl Lynn Bergeson, and his sister, Louella Dugan.
Memorials have been established in Mr. Bergeson's name with the Grandview United Methodist Church and the Society for Melanoma Research. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Mary Mae Crouse

Mary Mae Crouse slipped peacefully away on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, in Sacramento, Calif. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, in Folsom, Calif. Mary and her husband will be inurned at Lakeside Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Folsom. Born May 2, 1926 in Arkansas City, she was the daughter of Milton and Ethel Loyd. She is survived by her loving children, Larry Dorman and wife, Sandy, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Linda (Dorman) Martinez and husband, Antonio Martinez, of Rancho Cordova, Calif; sister, Barbara Martin, of Claremore, Okla., who is the lone survivor of the Loyd family brothers and sisters; sister-in-law, Mary Loyd and brother-in-law, Ted Jones, of Arkansas City; four sisters-in-law, Betty Crouse, of Derby, Jerry Crouse, of Arkansas City, Jean Crouse, of Texas, and Nelda Crouse, of Winfield. Her passing will be mourned by five loving grandchildren, Gregory (Sandy) Dorman, in Texas, Shari (Troy) Warr, in Folsom, Calif., Robert (Cheri) Engelke, in Las Vegas, Nev., Tracy (Rickee) Dorman, of Parker, Colo., and Susan Engelke, in Las Vegas, Nev. Her 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren will miss her so much. She leaves a legacy of kindness, caring, and family involvement as an example to us all. She has many nieces and nephews scattered everywhere. She was a treasure to them all and loved them dearly. Thank you to all of you who called her and visited her over the years. It meant everything to her. A special thanks to Justine Tomsche, of Arkansas City, for her devotion to her aunt and the many trips she made to visit her over the years. Also to her sister, Bobbie, who made a yearly visit to keep in touch with her sister. Forrest (Bob) and Mary moved extensively over their 45 years together, leaving behind a trail of wonderful memories and many friends who will miss them very much. Last, but not least, a very special thank you to the wonderful family of Antonio Martinez in California. They adopted her into their family and showered her with so much love, laughter and joy over the past four years. There are not enough words to express how much she loved all her family and friends. We will all miss her so much. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Forrest (Bob) W. Crouse; her parents; her brothers and sisters, Evelyn Sheldon, Georgia Bills, Lucille Jones, Jack Loyd, Bill Loyd, and Pat Bebout; and one tiny granddaughter, Alaina Engelke. Mary requested no flowers.

Jacquie Sue Zimmerman

Jacquie Sue Zimmerman, 59, of Arkansas City, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center of Arkansas City. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, in the Hope Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Slaughter will officiate. Cremation has been effected. Jacquie was born April 16, 1949, in Bakersfield, Calif., to Floyd and Eleanor (Porter) Brown. She was reared and educated in Bakersfield. She met Larry Zimmerman in Bakersfield and the two were married Dec. 9, 1988, in Laughlin, Nev. The couple returned to Arkansas City where Jacquie worked as a waitress for Daisy Mae's and APCO East. Mom has always said, "Don't mourn my death, celebrate my life." Jacquie was a life member of the Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 VFW Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband Larry of the home; three daughters, Rhonda Hull, of Cleveland, Okla., Jeanette Harlander, of Odessa, Texas, Jill Harlander of Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters, Candy Brown and Judy Hoobler, both of Montana; five grandchildren Brianna, Quinten, Justin, Patrick, and Amber; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Lois Y. Smith

Lois Y. Smith, 72, Burden, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Winfield Resthaven. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday following the family lunch in the Burden City Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 6 p.m. today. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today at Holy Name Catholic Church. Born Aug. 31, 1936, in Wellington, she was the daughter of George B. and Ethelene A. (Harrington) Newbold. She was a homemaker and worked as a nurse's aide at William Newton Hospital and a psychiatric aide at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. She operated the Trash and Treasure Store in Burden. Survivors include her husband, Lowell of the home; sons, Mike Smith, Burden, and Bobby Smith, Oxford, Mich.; daughters, Glenda Smith, Topeka; sisters, Georgine Herrington, Wellington, Kay Marsh, Oxford, Diane Klinkon, Winfield, and Dodie Center, Weir, Kan.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials have been established for the Burden VFD Volunteer Fire Department and Holy Name Catholic Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Daniel R. Miller

Daniel R. Miller, 63, Winfield, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2006, at his home. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at the Church of the Nazarene in Winfield, with Tom Boese officiating. Cremation has been effected. Born March 25, 1942, in Udall, he was the son of Henry Arthur and Ilis Miller. Survivors include his sons, Daniel Miller, Wichita, Jeffrey Allen Miller, Winfield; daughters, Pam Sutton, Winfield, Roxie Lambert, Winfield, Candy Miller, Wichita, and Misty Rowe, Winfield; sister, Arlene McNeil, of Oklahoma; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Marjorie O. Spiva

Marjorie O. Spiva, 84, Arkansas City, formerly of Oklahoma City, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, at Medicalodge East Health Care Center. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, in the Moore Cemetery, Moore, Okla. The family will greet local friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today. Marjorie was born Dec. 2, 1921, in El Dorado, to Claude M. and Velma B. (Hall) Banta. She was reared and educated in Oklahoma City and Wichita graduating from Wichita East High School. She married Nona E. Spiva on May 25, 1940, in Oklahoma City. The couple made their home in Oklahoma City until his death. She then moved to Arkansas City to be near family. Marjorie worked as a trapeze artist for several years in her youth and then worked as a pharmacy tech for the Gilliam Pharmacy in Oklahoma City for many years. She was a member of the New Life Fellowship Church of God, past president of the VFW Auxiliary Post 9265 of Oklahoma City, Past Matron of the Order of Amaranth Victory Court No. 5, and past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 501, Oklahoma City. Survivors include a great-niece that she helped raise for several years, Tristan Krug; three brothers, Dewey Banta, of Oklahoma City, Robert Banta and Eddie Santiago, both of Arkansas City; three sisters, Mildred Stimax and Virginia Palmer, both of Arkansas City, and Joan Oaks, of Tulsa. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Gene "Corky" Spiva; two brothers, Jack and Dana Banta; and a sister, Claudine Schmidt.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Eunice Marie Peters Pratt

Funeral services for Eunice Marie Peters Pratt, 92, who died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at Hawks Funeral Home with Charles Cornett officiating. Interment was in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Ashton. Casket bearers were John Reisch, Mark Reisch, Troy Reisch, Steve Scott and Allen Hawkins.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Mary S. Hill

Mary S. Hill, 92, longtime Arkansas City and South Haven area resident, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Effie Janelle Prosser

Effie Janelle Prosser, 65, Arkansas City, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at her residence. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashton. Cremation has been effected. Janelle was born June 21, 1940, in Stillwater, Okla., to Ralph Howard Notz and Zola Bernadine (Giger) Bacon. She served many years as an office assistant and insurance adjuster. Survivors include her son, Michael William Prosser, of Santa Monica, Calif.; brother, William Ralph Notz, of Garmisch, Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Craig Davis Stewart.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Audrey Mae Nevius

Audrey Mae Nevius, 75, of Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center, in Arknasas City. The Home-Going Celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Blessing Heights Church of God-Apostolic Faith, in Arkansas City. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be left at the funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-8 p.m. Sunday and 9-noon Monday. The family will be available from 4-6 p.m. Sunday. Audrey was born Oct. 23, 1930, in Hutchinson, Kan., the daughter of James and Delia Avery Nelson. She graduated from Hutchinson High School and later attended the community college in Parsons. She married LaVern Leo Schmidt in March 1946 in Hutchinson, Kan. He died July 19, 1979. Audrey moved to Arkansas City in 1982 from Topeka. She was a cook at the Presbyterian Manor and more recently worked at Wendy's. She was a member of Blessing Heights Church. Survivors include three sons, Stephen L. Schmidt, and his wife, Sandy, of Haysville, Kan., Jimmy L. Schmidt, and his wife, Tona, of Arkansas City, and Tracy R. Schmidt, of Wichita; one daughter, Gayla Fisher, and her husband, Jess, of Arkansas City; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Schmidt, and Trudy K. Schmidt; one brother, Claude Nelson; one sister, Edna Cottle; and two grandsons, Brandon Musick and Jackie Mason. Arrangements are by Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City, Kan.

Delores C. Waite

Delores C. Waite, 92, Winfield, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery west of Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. The family will greet friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Born Dec. 27, 1913, in Merrimac, Okla., she was the daughter of C.P. and Mae (Mickley) Williams. She helped her husband on the farm and was a homemaker. Survivors include her son, Dwaine Waite, Winfield; daughter, Maxine Rusk, Sun City; brother, Jay Williams, Burden; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, O. Boyd Waite; her parents; a son, Larry Boyd Waite; and a brother, Kenneth Williams.

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a memorial in her name for the Winfield High School Music Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Kenneth R. Guier

Kenneth R. Guier, 84, Winfield, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at the Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at Miles Funeral Service. Military committal honors will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Ponca City. Friends may sign a register book at the funeral home until 5 p.m. today. Born June 4, 1921, in Niotaze, Kan., he was the son of Walter and Pearl (Holeman) Guier. He was employed at Continental Oil Company in Ponca City, until retirement. Survivors include his wife, Viola (Morain) Guier; sons, Kenneth Guier Jr., Pensacola, Fla., and Robert Guier, of The Woodlands, Texas; daughter, Sandi Harris, New Ulm, Minn.; sister, Peggy Abernathy, Washington; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn (Olech) Guier; his parents; four brothers; and four sisters.
Memorials have been established for St. Mary's Boy Scouts in Ponca City, and the National Parkinsons' Disease research. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.
