Wayne Hutchins

Wayne Hutchins, 69, Winfield, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at the HCA Wesley Hospital in Wichita. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today. Born Feb. 7, 1936, in Winfield, he was the son of Raymond D. and Mary (Spooner) Hutchins. He worked for K-DOT as an engineers aide for 23 years, and worked for the City of Winfield in the engineering department until retirement. Survivors include his wife, Sandi (Chace) Hutchins of the home; sons, Mike Hutchins and Jeff Hutchins, Winfield, Brian Hutchins, El Dorado, and Steve Hutchins, Olathe; daughter, Stephanie Howard, Wichita; sister, Wanda Pray, Junction City; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Jack Alfred Harris

Jack Alfred Harris, 70, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, in Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at the Rindt Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City, with Chaplain Herb Reeves officiating. Interment will be in Maple City. Jack was born April 23, 1935, in Mishawaka, Ind. Jack retired from Brown Shoe Company after 50 years in the shoe business. Jack was active in Grace Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Nina M. Harris; his daughters, Karen Dreier and her husband, Steve, of Kansas City, Mo., and Brenda Kiefer and her husband, Tom, of Wentzville, Mo. He was preceded in death by his father, Al Harris; his mother, Mary Harris; and his sister, Nancy Regner.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Two Ten Footwear Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Russell Dewaine McConnell

Memorial services for Russell Dewaine McConnell, who died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, in San Bernardino, Calif. Private inurnment services were at the burial site of his youngest daughter, Terri McConnell, who preceded him in death. He was born March 28, 1928, in Missouri, the son of Bert E. and Lillie Esther (Rhodes) McConnell. He married Mary Wright, May 28, 1947. He was manager of Kroger Stores in Missouri, and manager of Safeway in California, until opening Mac's Spring Shop in Highland, Calif., in 1968. He retired in 1991. Survivors include his wife, Mary McConnell; daughter, Sandra Robbins and husband, Fred, Highland, Calif.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; sister, Wilma Graham, Arkansas City; and a brother, Beryl McConnell, of Missouri.
A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73123.

Phil Hinton

Phil Hinton, 85, longtime Newkirk farmer, rancher, died early Saturday morning, Jan 21, 2006, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Blackwell, with the Rev. Steven Stoll officiating. Interment will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the funeral home from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday Phil Hinton was born Dec. 7, 1920, at the family home west of Mannford, Okla., to James and Josie (Copeland) Hinton. Phil was a farmer and grew wheat, hay and barley and raised registered Angus cattle. Survivors include two sons, Lt. Col. (Ret.) James Hinton, of Newkirk, and Les Hinton, of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Carol Kaspar, of Newkirk, and Janice Grundmann, of Shawnee; one brother, Paul Hinton, of Pampa, Texas; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Carolyn Alma (Priboth) Hinton, Phil was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.
A memorial fund has been established with Trinity Lutheran Church. Contributions may be made directly to the church at 125 Vinnedge, Blackwell, OK 74631. Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Melvin L. Nellis

Melvin L. Nellis, 79, of Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at his residence. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, in the Parker Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Chambers officiated. Cremation has been effected. Melvin was born March 24, 1926, in Cambridge, Kan., to Theodore and Sylvia (Glass) Nellis. He was reared and educated in Dexter. Melvin served in the United States Navy during WWII. He continued his education at the Oklahoma State Technical College at Okmulgee, Okla. He married Betty Howard on Sept. 27, 1947, in Dexter. The couple moved to Arkansas City, in 1952. He began working for Fred Lahon and then for Ellis Billings. Melvin worked as a plumber, boilermaker for Billings Plumbing for 50 years. He was a longtime Boy Scout leader in the Arkansas City area. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; two sons, Lee and his wife, Karen Nellis, of Williston, Vt., Alan and his wife, Patricia Nellis, of Fulton, Mo.; a brother, Ed Nellis, of Linwood, Kan.; a sister, Doris Davidson, of Topeka; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Paul Nellis.
A memorial has been established with the Quivera Council - Boy Scouts of America. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Imogene Marie Hower

Imogene Marie Hower, 87, Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit in Arkansas City. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City. The Rev. Ted Brown will officiate. Interment will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Imogene was born Nov. 4, 1918, to Richard Lee Ferguson and Annie Belle (Ellis) Ferguson in Hindsville, Ark. She attended Hartwell, Ark., schools. On Nov. 20, 1935, she married Ernest M. Hower in Arkansas City where the couple made their home. She was a homemaker. Imogene worked briefly at JC Penney. She was a member of the Hackney Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, Kenneth M. Hower and his wife, Carolea; daughter, Beverly K. Grant and her husband, Jack; sister, Delores Anderson, all of Arkansas City; four grandchildren, Rene Ettinger, Jeanenne Stockton, Kendall Rich and Kevin Hower; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister, Myrl Gillespie.

Memorials have been established with the Hackney Baptist Church of the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Betty Joyce "BJ" Jones

Betty Joyce "BJ" Jones, 79, of Arkansas City, and Lawrence, Kan., died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Arkansas City. The Rev. Craig C. Sweeney will officiate. A private family committal service will be held in Douglass. Betty was born Sept. 17, 1926, in Wichita, to Virgil and Mattie (Elder) Clay. She was raised in Douglass, where her parents owned Clay's Dry Goods Store. Betty graduated from Douglass High School in 1944. Betty married Donald E. Jones on May 27, 1947. "Don" preceded her in death in 1973. They made their first home in Douglass, later moving to Augusta. In 1957 the Jones family moved to Arkansas City, where Don was co-owner of the Wrico Drilling Company in Wichita. Betty has been living in Lawrence, during the past year to be closer to family. During Betty's many years in Arkansas City, she was an active volunteer in civic, school, and church functions. Some of her last and most enjoyed activities were those years spent as a volunteer with the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and her service on the Trinity Episcopal Altar Guild. Betty also enjoyed her many good friends, bridge games, sewing, crafting, traveling, attending concerts and the time she spent with her family. Survivors include two sons, Craig and Clay Jones, of Lawrence, and their wives, Susie and Nancy; sister, Abbie Wiseman; and her granddaughter, Kelly Jones.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Trinity Episcopal Church, of Arkansas City, the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary in Arkansas City, or the Midland Hospice House of Topeka. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Harvey Thurston Plunkett

Harvey Thurston Plunkett, 78, longtime Newkirk resident, died early Monday morning, Jan. 23, 2006, at his home in Newkirk. Cremation has been effected and there will be no service. He was born May 31, 1927, at Olton, N.M., the son of William L. and Marion (Clapp) Plunkett. He retired from General Dynamics in Ft. Worth, Texas. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn M. (Shaffer) Plunkett; two sons, Bill Plunkett, of Cresson, Texas, and James Plunkett, of Newkirk; one daughter, Kim Smith, of Newkirk; one sister, Frances Snodgrass, of Cresson, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Clarice Reid Gaudino

Clarice Reid Gaudino, 87, Arkansas City, died Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center. Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at the First Baptist Church. Private interment is scheduled for Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Prepare for Eternity). Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

James A. "Simon" Fry

James A. "Simon" Fry, 79, Phoenix, Ariz., died in his home after a long illness on Jan. 17, 2006. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at Sts. Simon and Jude Cathedral, Phoenix. He was born in Uncas, Okla., on June 27, 1926, to Edward and Sarah Fry. Jim grew up north of Newkirk in the Grey Nort community and graduated from Newkirk High School in 1944. He worked for The Traveler and the Ponca City News before moving to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1958. He worked as a press maintenance foreman, printing The Arizona Republic for 30 years before retiring in 1988. Jim served in the Army during WWII and was stationed in New Caledonia. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen; eight children, Marilyn Braun and her husband, Michael, Jim Fry and his wife, Linda, John Fry, Patty Takacs and her husband, Arpad, Mark Fry and his wife, Sheryl, Marylou Terman and her husband, Dean, Joyce Fry, and David Fry; 16 grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; sister, Nona Crain, Arkansas City; his brother, Norman Fry and his wife, Darlene, also of Arkansas City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to First Way Pregnancy Support Center, 333 E. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85006.

Walter R. Allen

Walter R. Allen, 90, Winfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at Cumbernauld Village. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday. Born April 25, 1915, in Winfield, he was the son of Henry Claude and Marie Caroline (Magnuson) Allen. He worked for the Southwestern College custodial department for 28 years before retiring. Survivors include his adopted nieces and caregivers, Verna Welch and Ann Kimmell, Arkansas City; sister-in-law, Adaline Allen, Wichita; and niece, Kristine Blaugh, Wichita. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mattie Marie Jones, Marguerite Gertrude Shields, Carole Odine Laughlin and Merlene Noble Allen; brothers, Claude Mervin Allen, Forrest Henry Allen and Kenneth Morris Allen.
A memorial has been established for William Newton Home Health Care and Lifeline. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Katherine "Katie" Keiter

Katherine "Katie" Keiter, 99, Maple City, formerly of Pratt, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at her home in Maple City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Sacred Heart Church. Father Gregory S. Le Blanc will officiate. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt. A vigil service will be held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Friday, with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Born Nov. 27, 1906, in Goodwell, Okla., she was the daughter of George Welli and Anna Welsch. She was a homemaker. On Nov. 27, 1944, she married John B. Keiter in Pratt. He died Feb. 19, 1959. She had been a Pratt area resident since 1921. Katie was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Pratt, and the Daughters of Isabella. Survivors include one son, John D. Keiter and wife, Monica, Maple City; daughter, Anna Marie Downey and husband, John, Wichita; three grandchildren, Kathleen Ambrosia, Stephanie Downey and Jennifer Fawcett; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Matt Welli, Mike Welli, George Welli and John Welli; and three sisters, Mary Welli, Katherine Welli and Anna Udry.

A memorial has been established for the Gifts and Bequest Committee at the Pratt Regional Medical Center. Contributions should be made through the mortuary. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary, Pratt.

Glen Dale Nunn

Funeral services for Glen Dale Nunn, 74, Arkansas City, who died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Carol Cook of the In His Image Church, Missouri, and the Rev. Faron Anderson officiated. Interment was at 1 p.m. Friday in the Union Cemetery in Anderson, Mo. Honorary casket bearers were Glen's grandchildren, great-grandchildren and lifelong friends.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

C.R. "Brownie" Bishop

Funeral services for C.R. "Brownie" Bishop, 88, Arkansas City, who died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Grant and the Rev. Paul Rist officiated. Interment was in Parker Cemetery. Military honors were by Spencer Ralston Post No. 1254 VFW, Arkansas City. Vocalist was Marcia Stultz. Organist was Melba Meachtlen. Casket bearers were Trent Bishop, David Copeland, Steve Williams, Larry Whitt, Robben Ledeker and Dr. Robert Morton. Honorary casket bearers were Hubert Johnston, Ted Templar, John Bossi, Douglas Wright, Otis Morrow and Bill Allen.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Flora Cornelia Patty Allen

Flora Cornelia Patty Allen, 93, former Newkirk resident and Chilocco teacher died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at the Canterbury Nursing Center, Oklahoma City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel with Sister Maxine Busbee, minister of the Church of God, Crutcho, officiating. Interment will follow in Hope Cemetery, Arkansas City. The body will lie in state at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Born March 4, 1912, at Big Cabin, Okla., she was the daughter of Oscar and Ulalah Sophronia (Harris) Blount. She taught at Chilocco Indian School. She brought children from the Navajo reservations to Chilocco where she, with the help of an interpreter, taught them English. This continued until the Navajos built their own schools. Survivors include her children; a daughter, Ulalah Jane Allen, of Dallas, Texas; and a son, Stephen Lester Allen, of Shawnee; one sister, Beulah Balsters of Tulsa; one grandson; one stepgrandson; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Vernon Allen; her parents; and two brothers, Harris Blount and Julian Blount.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Melvin LeRoy Nellis

Graveside services for Melvin LeRoy Nellis, 79, Arkansas City, who died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, were conducted at 2 p.m. in Parker Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Chambers of the Central Christian Church officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
