Virginia A. Kelley, 91, Winfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-7 p.m. Sunday. The family will greet friends from 1-3 p.m. Born Aug. 19, 1914, in Braxton County, W.V., she was the daughter of John Thomas and Minnie Hester (Barnett) Cowgill. She was employed at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in the kitchen and she was a homemaker. Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Holscher, Emporia, Carolyn Reynolds, Winfield, Rita Cameron, Winfield, and Brenda Huddleston, Enid, Okla.; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Ford Kelley; brother, Glen Cowgill; sisters, Opal Mae Cowgill and Julia Avanell Cowgill.
A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Rhonda K. Andes

Rhonda K. Andes, 41, Udall, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Via Christi/St. Francis in Wichita. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. today. Born April 19, 1963, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Ron and Sandra (Wells) Smith. Later Sandra married Ray Ball and he adopted Rhonda at the age of 7. She was employed at Social and Rehabilitation Services with the LEAP program and was a housekeeper. Survivors include her son, Cody Fullhart of Grenola; daughter, Danielle Fullhart of Grenola; parents, Ray and Sandra Ball of Winfield and Ron and Carol Smith of Haysville; brothers, Brian Ball of Atlanta, and Tracy Morris and Tony Morris of Bogalusa, La.; stepbrother, Kevin Smith of Wichita; sisters, Sheila Krug of Winfield and Terri Vanerhagen of Winfield; stepsister, Michelle Smith of Haysville. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to help defray funeral expenses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Dean D. Defore

Dean D. Defore, 86, Winfield, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at William Newton Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment was in Highland Cemetery. Born June 7, 1918, in Douglass, he was the son of Daniel A. and Chloie (Bannon) Defore. He was a farmer and retired from Mobil Oil Company as a bulk agent. Survivors include his twin daughters, Sharon Stevenson and Charlotte Thiel, both of Winfield; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia R. (Cronk) Defore; his parents; and brothers, Cecil and Leonard.
Memorials have been established for William Newton Hospital/Skilled Nursing Unit and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice of Cowley County. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements were under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Lois R. Harris

Lois R. Harris, 63, formerly of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Lake East Hospital in Painesville, Ohio. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in the Parker Cemetery. Pastor Robert L. Ferris of the First Christian Church of Newkirk officiated. Born Jan. 16, 1941, in Arkansas City, Lois was the daughter of John Louis and Ruth Irene (Wagner) Potterton. She grew up and attended schools in Arkansas City. Ruth worked as a waitress at many different cafes and restaurants in and around Arkansas City. Lois also worked for her sister as a Clerk at the R&L Laundromat for nine years before she retired. Survivors include her father, John Potterton of Arkansas City; four sons, Raymond and his wife, Sandy of Redmond, Wash., John and his wife, Marcia of Issaquah, Wash., Larry of Seattle, Wash., and Roy and his wife, Heather of Madison, Ohio.; daughter, Ruth Heppel-Werner and her spouse, Regina of Augusta; sister, Lora Duncan and her husband, Richard of Arkansas City; eleven grandchildren; and one nephew, Randy Duncan. Lois was preceded in death by her mother.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Bernice C. Baxter

Bernice C. Baxter, 89, Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment will be in the High Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call until 8 p.m. today, at the funeral home. Born June 5, 1915, in Grandview Community, she was the daughter of John and Bertha (Kirby) David. Survivors include her husband, Lee F. Baxter of the home; daughter, Janet Ilene Westwood of Greenwood, Texas; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Beulah David.
A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Iva E. "Wanda" Branch

Iva E. "Wanda" Branch, 71, of Arkansas City, died Thursday (January 6, 2005) at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (January 11, 2005) at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Springside Cemetery. The casket will be open at the funeral home Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all day Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Wanda was born June 9, 1933, in Cameron, Texas, to Earl J. and Bertie J (Shoaf) McMahan Armstrong. She was reared and educated in Cameron. Wanda graduated from nursing school in Wichita. Wanda married Donald L. Branch on September 27, 1951, in Temple, Texas. The couple has lived in Arkansas City since 1953. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Spencer-Ralston Post #1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Social Order of Beauceant, and Victory Chapter #151 Order of the Eastern Star. Wanda worked as a LPN, after raising her family, for the Arkansas City Memorial Hospital (SCKRMC) for 13 years. She enjoyed fishing and camping before bad health set in and kept her from going. She also enjoyed her many pets and local wildlife that lived on the family farm. Survivors include her husband, Don, of the home; two sons, Leonard, and his wife, Shirley Branch, Bill, and his wife, Angie Patterson, all of Arkansas City; two daughters, Linda, and her husband, Bill Cook, of Venezuela, and Donzella, and her husband, Jim Hoover, of Newkirk, Okla.; one brother, Perry G. Armstrong, of Riley, Kan.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Ronnie, and two brothers, Earl J. and Donald Ray Armstrong.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are being made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Betty Susan Holt

Betty Susan Holt, 85, Atlanta, Kan., died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at her home. She was born July 7, 1919 in rural Douglas, Kan. She was the daughter of Robert E and Katie Leah Bals. She graduated Douglas High School in 1936. She was married to Aubrey S. Holt on Sept. 16, 1936, in Winfield and made her home near Atlanta. They lived and worked on a farm for over 50 years. She was a member of the Atlanta Christian Church. Survivors include a son, Shelton Holt, and wife, Cecelia, of Enid, Okla.; daughters, Janice Billiter, and husband, Dale; Kathleen Willard, and husband, Wayne, all of Atlanta. She had 10 grandchildrn and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by an infant daughter, Wilma; and a daughter, Carolyn Enz, and her husband, Phil. Funeral services are to be held Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Wilmot Cemetery. Friends may call from noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday. The family will greet friends from 2 until 4 p.m. that day.
Memorials have been established in Mrs. Holt's name for Atlanta First Responders and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Diane C. Harris

Diane C. Harris, 59, Caldwell, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Central Christian Church in Caldwell. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today. Diane was born April 1, 1945. She was assistant vice president of the Stock Exchange Bank. Survivors include her husband, Paul D. Harris of Caldwell; son, Kristopher Harris of Wichita; daughters, Kelly Hudson of Wichita; daughter, Kirstan Rice of Caldwell; mother, Jean Clarke of Lyons; sister, Sharon Ennhuis of Northglenn, Colo.; and five grandchildren.
Memorials have been established for the Central Christian Church Building Fund or the Sumner County District No. 1 Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home and Crematory, Caldwell.

Gary Dean Byrd

Gary Dean Byrd, 52, Hennessey, Okla., formerly of BlackweII, died Wednesday, Jan 5, 2005, at Integris Bass Hospital in Enid. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Jan. 8, 2005, at the Methodist Church in Hennessey. Interment will be in the Hennessey Cemetery following the service. The family will be receiving visitors until 6 p.m. Friday, at the home of Jo Byrd. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Jo Byrd; two sons, Brian Byrd of Hennessey, and Jason Byrd of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Amy Byrd of Hennessey; and Brandy Doty of Ponca City; one brother, Larry Byrd of Arkansas City; four sisters, Linda Clark of Broken Bow, Okla., Mary Tucker of Wellington, Joyce Dollarhide of Blackwell, and Brenda Reece of Texarkana, Texas; two half sisters, Suzie Ickes of San Diego, Calif., and Peggy White of Hennessey. He is preceded in death by his Father. Harold Byrd Sr.; Mother Anna Belle McCarty; and one brother, Harold Byrd Jr.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cordry-Gritz funeral home, Hennessey.

Jerry William "Jack" Breedlove

Jerry William "Jack" Breedlove, 92, longtime Newkirk area resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center, Ponca City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Christ's Church of Newkirk with the Rev. Stephen Harshman officiating. Interment will follow in Newkirk Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today. Born April 6, 1912, in Higgins, Texas, he was the son of Finus David and Loretta (Asher) Breedlove. He was a farmer and had worked on his mother and stepfather's ranch. Survivors include two daughters, Janice Randol of Tulsa, and Judy Miller of Newkirk; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Velma Zoe (Richardson) Breedlove; an infant daughter, Anna Ladene Breedlove; his parents; his step father, E. B. Eberhart; one brother, Finus Breedlove; a half brother, Orville Eberhart; and three sisters, Opal Graves, Trellis Kaulp and Faye Glover.
A memorial has been established with Christ's Church. Contributions may be made through Eastman National Bank, P.O. Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Goldie May Lasswell

Goldie May Lasswell, 100, former Kay County resident, died Dec. 29, 2004, in Lincoln City, Ore. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel with Danny W. Cornish, minister of the Newkirk Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Kaw City. Born April 13, 1904, in Washunga, she was the daughter of Mark and Emma Sheridan Hill who made the Oklahoma land rush of 1893. Her career background included working on bombers during WWII as a "Rosie the Riveter". Survivors include one son, Harold Lasswell of Boulder, Colo; one daughter, Emma Lou Lasswell of Delhi, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lasswell in 1972.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Carl Warren Nulik

Funeral services for Carl Warren Nulik, 83, Arkansas City, who died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Robert L. Ferris of the First Christian Church in Newkirk officiated. Interment was in the Parker Cemetery. Masonic rites were by Crescent Lodge No. 133 AF&AM, Arkansas City. Casket bearers were Justin Nulik, Colby Nulik, Mindy Ming, Jeremy Nulik, Josh Ming, Drew Ming and Brynn Nulik. Honorary casket bearers were Bob Anstine, Les Waldeck, Bud Rush, Bob Uden, Fred Swanson and Tom Haines.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Fay Sparks

Funeral services for Fay Sparks, 89, formerly of Arkansas City, who died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at the First Baptist Chruch with Dr. Richard Nelson officiating. Interment was in the Parker Cemetery. Scripture was given by Sean O'Daniel. Musician was Stephen Butler. Casket bearers were Kelvin O'Daniel, Justin Sparks, Greg Sparks, Tony Sparks, Jason Sparks, Steve Cromley, Lance Sparks, Andy Sparks, Mike Sparks and Jeff Sparks.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Norberto V. "Chico" Juarez

Mass of Christian Burial for Norberto V. "Chico" Juarez, 87, Arkansas City, who died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, was conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father John Brungardt officiating. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery. Military honors were by Spencer Ralston Post No. 1254 VFW, Arkansas City. Organist was Karen Pontious. Cantor was Marcia Stultz. Casket bearers were Donnie Winters, Johnny Solorio, Mark Solorio, Armand Tinoco, Steve Solorio and Joey Solorio.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Wayne L. King

Wayne L. King, 59, Winfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at William Newton Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Floral Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Friday. The family will greet friends from 5-6 p.m. that evening. Born Nov. 26, 1945, in Winfield, he was the son of George D. and Genevieve (Darnell) Hatton. At the age of 2, he was adopted by William T. King. He worked at Stanley Jones Construction in Arkansas City. Survivors include his sons, Billy Dale of Coffeyville and Justin King of Winfield; daughter, Jenger Clark of Baxter Springs; mother, Genevieve Meier of Nixa, Mo.; stepmother, Karen King of Wichita; brothers, Tom King of Charlotte, N.C., and Lloyd Hatton of Merced, Calif.; stepbrothers, Jason King of Wichita, and Andy King of Winfield; sister, Linda Riggs of Nixa, Mo.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, George Hatton; stepfather, William T. King; sons, Cody and Lance; and his sister, Betty.
A memorial has been established for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Jack Breedlove

Jack Breedlove, 92, longtime Newkirk area resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center, Ponca City.
Arrangements are pending and will be announced later by Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Betty Marler

Betty Marler, 67, Winfield, died Jan. 2, 2005, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield, after a long illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Born Dec. 4, 1937, in Wichita Falls, Texas, she was a twin daughter of John Harness Ford and Zada Cox Ford (Davis). She retired from work at Gott Corporation as a quality control inspector and worked a second job as a C.N.A. at William Newton Hospital and the Home Health Care System. Survivors include her sons, Rick of Winfield, Randy Marler of South Haven, Ron Marler of Wichita; daughter, Earlene "Elly" Marler-Love of Udall; brother, Richard Ford of Moore, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, baby Rose Ford, Felda Lee Little, Helen Harris and Mary Drake; and a brother, James Cox.
A memorial has been established for the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.
