Donald Dean Martling

Donald Dean Martling, 81, Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at the Medicalodge East of Arkansas City. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dean LaVelle of the Bible Christian Church will officiate. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Born Nov. 14, 1923, in Cambridge, Dean was the son of William Henry and Mary Nora (Hawley) Martling. He grew up in rural Dexter and attended school in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1941. Dean served in the United States Navy from 1943 until 1946. On June 27, 1945, Dean married Wilma Arlene Flower in Winfield. The couple lived in Emporia, Chanute, and La Junta, Colo., before moving to Arkansas City in 1973. Dean worked as a wire chief for the Santa Fe Railroad for 34 years, retiring in 1981. Dean was a member of the Bible Christian Church, American Legion Shelton Beaty Post No. 18, V.F.W. Spencer-Ralston No. 1254, Ham Radio Operators, and NARVRE. He was a volunteer for VITA for 20 years and served on the nutrition council at the Senior Center. Survivors include his wife, Arlene of the home; daughter, Donna McCoy of Weatherford, Texas; son, Clifford Martling of Sacramento, Calif.; four sisters, Lucille Mueller of Wichita, Nellie Hastings of Lee's Summit, Mo., Ruby Howard of Wichita, and Neva Nelson of Las Cruces, N.M.; brother, Frank Martling of Wichita; four grandchildren, Shane, Shawna, Jessica, and Jason; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eva Gatton and Noreen Hawkins; and brother, Everett Martling.
Memorials have been established with the Bible Christian Church Building Fund and Friendship Meals. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Vicki Lynn Lolar

Vicki Lynn Lolar, 43, Arkansas City, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the North Summit Church of Christ. Wayne Robbins will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday. Vicki was born July 20, 1961, in Wichita, to Earl and Saundra (Brown) Quintero. She was reared and educated in Wichita and Arkansas City. Vicki earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Southwestern College of Winfield. On August 4, 1990, Vicki married Kemp Lolar in Arkansas City. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. Vicki worked for the Ark City Clinic for several years. Survivors include her husband, Kemp of the home; two sons, Jeremiah Morgan of Overland Park, and Edwin T. Lolar of Jacksonville, Fla., serving on board the USS John F. Kennedy; her father, Earl Quintero of Sawyer, Okla.; her mother, Saundra Quintero of Arkansas City; and a sister, Debbie Inman of Wellington. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Phyllis and Lawrence Brown and Cora Scott.
A memorial has been established with the American Liver Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Olivia Margarete Wiseley

Olivia Margarete Wiseley, two month old infant daughter of Lucas and Angela Wiseley of Assaria, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina. Private inurnment will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. She was born Oct. 11, 2004, in Kansas City, Kan. Survivors in addition to her parents include her grandparents, Randal and Geneva Wiseley of Arkansas City, Margarete Rogers of Salina, and Eugene and Patty Rogers of Abilene.
Memorials have been established for Children's Mercy Hospitals, Lupus Foundation of America-Kansas Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Schylur K. Jones Vincent

Schylur K. Jones Vincent, 25, Independence, died Friday, Jan. 31, at his home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, in Pratt Cemetery east of Independence, with Rev. Wayne Hett, pastor of the Riverside Southern Baptist Church, Independence. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 8 p.m. Friday. Born Nov. 9, 1979, in Denver, Colo., he was the son of Michael V. Jones and Bonnie Lee Bridwell. He worked for a time at Daylight Donuts and at Eggbert's in Independence. Survivors include his parents, Danny and Bonnie Vincent of the home; one daughter, Ashlyn Safyre; grandmother, Maxine Bridwell of Enid, Okla.; and great-grandmother, Margie Simmons of Lebanon, Mo.
A memorial has been suggested for A.W.O.L. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Potts Chapel, Independence.

Anna Mae Frances (Greathouse) Odell Wilcox

Anna Mae Frances (Greathouse) Odell Wilcox, 90, Winfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at the William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Winfield. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-8 p.m. Thursday. Born May 13, 1914, near Wauneta in Chautauqua County, she was the daughter of Virgil Anderson Greathouse and Lucy (Jones) Greathouse. Her mother died in 1919 and her sister Vernie raised her from 1921 until she graduated from high school. She was an RN and among her places of employment, she had worked for 10 years as an office nurse for Dr. A.Y. Wells in Winfield and William Newton Hospital in Winfield, as an Ob supervisor and later director of nursing. Survivors include her son, Robert "Bob" Odell of Winfield and Robert Kemper Wilcox of Ft. Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Sherman Sylvester Odell and Robert E. Wilcox.
Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 206 "A" East Ninth, Winfield, KS 67156, the First Baptist Church in Winfield or William Newton Hospital Nursing Scholarship. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Susan Elsie Irene Wolfe

Susan Elsie Irene Wolfe, 56, Grenola, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in Arkansas City. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City. Pastor Mike Ronan will officiate. Susan was born Nov. 2, 1948, to W. "Bunt" Speer and Lois Mae (Lancaster) Speer in Arkansas City. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1966 and the Junior College in 1968. On May 29, 1981, she married Billy H. Wolfe in Howard, and the couple made their home in Grenola. She was an LPN at the Winfield State Hospital, various area nursing homes and was currently employed at the Winfield Courier. Survivors include her husband, Bill Wolfe of the home; daughter, Erika Valentine and her husband, Dion of Arkansas City; three sons, Darel Davis and his wife, Terry of Newton, James Davis and his wife, Jennifer of Neodesha, and Roger Mc Kimson and his wife, Stacy of Arkansas City; two brothers, Ralph Speer and Mitchell Speer all of Arkansas City; six grandchildren, Levi Egbert, Sofia Davis, Alex Davis, Garrett Davis,and Jerrick and Kaden Lowry. She was preceded in death by by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Susan Wolfe Memorial Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Jesse F. Deichman

Jesse F. Deichman, 93, Winfield, died at Winfield Resthaven, Jan. 8, 2005. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to noon prior to services. Born Feb. 19, 1911, in rural Cowley County, he was the son of John Isaac and Cora Belle (King-Cottingham) Deichman. He owned and operated the first self-service laundry in Manitou Springs, Colo., and later repaired and restored player pianos in Winfield. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris A. (Kirkpatrick) Deichman; his parents; stepbrother, Earl Cottingham; stepsister, Mary Cottingham Bruce; and a sister, Marjorie Mae Deichman Sloan.
A memorial has been established for Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Rosetta June Gibson

Rosetta June Gibson, 82, Winfield, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment was in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City. Born June 7, 1922, in Arkansas City, she was the daughter of Robert "Bob" and Anna Beck Wilson. She was raised in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1941. On June 7, 1941, she married Arch Elsworth Gibson, in Little Rock, Ark. While Arch served in the US Army, Rosetta returned to Arkansas City, where he joined her after being discharged in 1945. Rosetta worked for both Dr. Wentworth and Dr. Wilson in Arkansas City. Her husband worked for both the Arkansas City Traveler and KSOK Radio, later starting the Arkansas City Democrat Herald newspaper. In 1960, they moved to Trinidad, Colo. They had also lived in Colorado Springs, Security, Colo., and Wild Field, Colo. For a short time they lived in the Washington D.C. area while Mr. Gibson was a legislative assistant. They returned to Colorado, living in Pueblo, Turkey Point and returning to Colorado Springs. Her husband died on July 11, 1996. Rosetta moved to Winfield in June, 1997. While living in Trinidad, she worked for the Riverside Drug Store and Montgomery Ward. Rosetta was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield, the National Democratic Society, the Jane Jefferson Society, and was a supporter of the Victory in the Valley of Wichita. Through the years she had been a Sunday School teacher at the First United Methodist Church in Arkansas City and served on the election boards. Survivors include four sons, Arch William "Skip" Gibson of Dubai United Arab Emirates, Roger Elsworth Gibson of Darrouzett, Texas, Richard Homer Gibson of Missoula, Mont., and Ronald Lloyd Gibson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Patricia Ann Swope of Winfield, and Rebecca Joy Gibson of Helena, Mont.; two sisters, Viola McMahon of Arkansas City, and Bette Leach of Olathe; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Constance Lee Gibson; three brothers, Robert Wilson, Edwin Wilson and William Wilson; two sisters, Lucille Schroeder and Belle Wilson; two grandchildren, Pattie Lynn Ray and Arch Wilson Gibson.
A memorial has been established with the Cancer Center of Kansas, Winfield office and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Rosetta J. Gibson

Funeral services for Rosetta J. Gibson, Winfield, who died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated. Interment was in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Special music was by Dr. James Leland, the organist. Vocalist was Dr. David Gardner. Casket bearers were Mike Casebolt, Olin Gibson, Kenneth Gibson, Chris Gittings, Capt. Trent Gibson, Arch "Rip" Gibson, Alex Skov and Garry Bogle. She had spent several years living in Colorado, among them being Turkey Rock and Widefield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Skye Alexandrea Eastman

Skye Alexandrea Eastman, 7, Arkansas City, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus of Wichita. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. Pastors Jackie Voegel and Jim Van Dyke will officiate. Born Jan. 6, 1998, in Arkansas City, Skye was the daughter of Jason Dee and Turi Arvilda (Brown) Eastman. Skye was attending the IXL Elementary School. She was a cheerleader for the youth Bulldog football program. She was also active in Tae Kwon Do, soccer, and Native American Dancing at pow-wows. She was taking dance classes from Cindy's School of Dance in Arkansas City. Survivors include her parents, Jason and Turi Eastman of the home; brother, Cody Eastman of the home; paternal grandparents, Rick and Judy Eastman of Arkansas City; maternal grandparents, Frazier and Pamela Brown of Arkansas City; paternal great-grandparents, Leo and Jane Graham of Edmond, Okla.; paternal great-grandmother, Sandy Eastman of Arkansas City; maternal great-grandfather, Jack McVey of Ottumwah, Iowa; two uncles and one aunt; and many cousins. Skye was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandfather, Bobby Eastman; paternal great-grandmother, Betty Graham; and maternal great-grandparents, Frazier and Bernita Brown.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Jana L. Miller

Jana L. Miller, 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2004, at her parent's home in Winfield. Memorial services will be later this spring at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield, with inurnment services in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Greenleaf, Kan. Born April 30, 1948, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Lloyd L. and Alice M. (Johannes) Miller. She worked for the Principal Financial Group in Tampa, Fla., and Grand Junction, Colo., and later the "Fannie Mae" Corporation as a loan underwriter. Survivors include her parents, Lloyd and Alice Miller of Winfield; brother, Corwin "Corky" Miller; and two nephews.
A memorial has been established for the Trinity Lutheran Church, Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Vada Georgia Smith

Vada Georgia Smith, 97, longtime Peckham resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Mercy Health Center, Oklahoma City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Peckham Christian Church. The Rev. Ken Marston, minister of the First Christian Church of Yukon, and the Rev. Lee Mefford, minister of the Peckham Christian Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Braman Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the funeral home until 9 p.m. Friday. Born May 30, 1907, in Hot Springs, Ark., she was the daughter of Archie Nail and Sallie (Muse) Echols. She farmed with her husband and she retired from the Peckham School lunch program at the age of 72, after 27 years of service. Survivors include twin sons, Murl Smith and Earl Smith, both of Yukon; one brother, Hiawatha Echols of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 52 years, Clifford Leroy Smith; her parents; three brothers, Vester, C.L. and Ordery Echols; and one sister, Vivian Mae White.
A memorial has been established with the Peckham Christian Church. Contributions may be made through Bank of Oklahoma, 110 S. Main Ave., Newkirk, OK 74647. Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Lucille B. Czaplinski

Lucille B. Czaplinski, 90, Arkansas City, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at her daughter's residence in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. Lucille was born June 17, 1914, in Peck, to John and Bessie (Mills) Popp. The family moved to Corbin in 1925. She attended Waco School in southeast Wichita, Corbin schools, and later Caldwell High School. On July 3, 1933, she married Robert Czaplinski in Medford, Okla. The couple lived northwest of Caldwell on the family farm where their three children were born. The family moved to Ogdon Farm near Corbin and later to Arkansas City in 1948. Lucille was a homemaker, but worked for Woolsworth's Five and Dime during the Christmas season. In 1950 Lucille began working for the Mauer-Neuer/Rodeo Meats in the peel and pack department. She retired in 1974. After retirement, the couple moved east of town where they raised cows, chickens and beagles. Survivors include two sons, Robert Jr. "Dutch" and his wife, Helen, and Kenneth "Jeep" and his wife, Beth; one daughter, Bessie and her husband, Jerry Ziegler, all of Arkansas City; seven grandchildren, David, Dennis, Shawn, and Clark Czaplinski, Denise Parks, Gwen Denison and Todd Ziegler; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert Sr.; a brother, Raymond Popp; four sisters, Nellie L. Plumeigh, Mattie M. Lacey, Cynthia F. Todd, and Erma P. Parker.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association or the Arthritis Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Don E. Satterthwaite

Don E. Satterthwaite, 76, Mulvane, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, in the Udall United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in the Ninnescah Cemetery. Born Aug. 9, 1928, in Udall, he was the son of Marshall and Mildred (Chenoweth) Satterthwaite. He was self-employed in the oil and gas business for many years. Survivors include his son, Mark Satterthwaite of Berthoud, Colo.; daughters, Susan Satterthwaite of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Kathy Vaughan of Portland, Ore.; brother, Fred Satterthwaite of Udall; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Satterthwaite.
A memorial has been established for the Udall Historical Society, 109 E. First, Udall, KS 67146. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Betty Arlene Peterson

Betty Arlene Peterson,83,Passed away January 9, 2005 at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino, California. Born in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Sept.30, 1921 she moved to Arkansas City at the of eight. She was a long time member of the Salvation Army. She played the cornet in the church band and was also in the girl guard program. After moving to California she worked for 12 years at Adams Cleaners, then spent her remaining years as a homemaker. She was a resident of Fontana for approximately the last 55 years. She is survived by two daughters, Linda Joyce Andrew, of Fontana, who lived with her and took care of her for the last 38 years; Margaret Elaine Self and her husband Richard, of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi;one sister Juanita L. Malone, of San Bernardino;one brother Chester W. Nation and his wife Wanda, of Arkansas City; one granddaughter Debbie Arlene Olson, of Fontana, who also lived with her and helped take care of her for the past year; one grandson David Allen Read, of Reno, Nevada; Josette Paquette, of Fontana, who has been like a daughter to her for the past 26 years; and many nieces;nephews;cousins; and friends. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all.
Memorial services will be held at McNearney Family Mortuary on Monday,January 17 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the charity of your choice.
