Haney
Betty Marie Haney, 77, Topeka, died Dec. 5, 2004, in Topeka. She was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Dr. Rev. F.M. and Ida Marie Morse. She was raised and attended schools in Fond du Lac, Wisc. She attended college at Lawrence College, Appleton, Wisc., Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas City Music Conservatory and Washburn University, graduating as an honor student. Mrs. Haney had been an elementary school teacher at Holton. She also worked at Security Benefit Life in Topeka, was an office manager for New England Life Insurance Co., and had worked for Pyramid Insurance in Mission and Ozark Insurance in Kansas City, Mo. She served as a church musician at the piano or pipe organ in churches in Kansas, Iowa and Wisconsin. She also sang in church choirs and had been a student worker at the American Baptist Camp at Green Lake, Wisc. She married the Rev. Gerald Haney on July 20, 1947, in Ottawa. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Michael L. Haney and wife Charlene, Dodd, Texas, and Marc J. Haney and wife Anny, Ottawa; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ken Morse and wife Carol, John Morse and Frank Morse and wife Lori; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Jeryn Marie Serrano, Topeka. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 7 at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Interment will be in Foster Cemetery
in Topeka. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 6 at the funeral home, where she will lie in state until 9 p.m. Dec. 6. Martin
Zora C. Garner Martin, 90, Holton, died Dec. 3, 2004. She was born Sept. 6, 1914, in Winchester, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Sipes Garner. Mrs. Martin lived in Meriden for 50 years before moving to Holton in 1990. She had also lived in Topeka for several years. She was a homemaker. She was a 50-year member of OES Chapter 399 in Meriden and a member of Winchester Christian Church. She married Harry A. Martin on July 1, 1939, in Holton. He died April 6, 1986. She also was preceded in death by a grandson, William "Jeff" Martin. Survivors include a sister, Irene Sanders, Lawrence; children, Donald and Joan Martin, Burlingame, Ray and Marilyn Sue Hallauer, Holton, Donald and Peggy Long, Topeka, and Michael and Debbie Martin, Meriden; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in Stewart Cemetery

Newell
Lena M. Newell, 80, Valley Falls, died Dec. 1, 2004, at a Topeka hospital. She was born Nov. 28, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Lorenzo "Guy" and Lena Miller Clanin. Mrs. Newell was a data entry clerk for the Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles in Topeka. She had lived in Oskaloosa and Lawrence. She was a member of Lakeview Faith Chapel at Holton and a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Graham-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Valley Falls. She married Vernon H. Newell on Jan. 30, 1950, at Oskaloosa. He survives. Other survivors include a son, John Newell, Tallahassee, Fla.; two daughters, Mary Engel, Lawrence, and Joanne Graves, Holton; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Dec. 4 at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery

Royer
Mary E. Royer, 100, Holton, died Dec. 1, 2004, at her home. She was born Dec. 17, 1903, south of Muscotah, the daughter of John Q. A. and Jane Ernst Miller. She graduated from St. Marys School of Nursing at Rochester, Minn. Mrs. Royer was a registered nurse. She worked at Medical Lodge at Atchison, Atchison Hospital, Holton Community Hospital, Jefferson County Memorial Hospital at Winchester, Horton Hospital and the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. She also worked as a private duty nurse in Jefferson and Atchison counties. She was a member of Larkinburg Christian Church. She married Clyde Royer on April 17, 1931, at Coal Creek, north of Valley Falls. He died May 2, 1971. A son, Ralph Royer, also died Feb. 18, 1974. Survivors include a son, Dale Royer and wife Benita, Holton; a daughter, Lois Starbuck, Westchester, Ill.; nine grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at Larkinburg Christian Church. Burial was in Muscotah Cemetery. Moser
Adam B. Moser, 89, Topeka, died Dec. 1, 2004, at a Topeka hospital. He was born Aug. 18, 1915, in Troy, the son of Fred S. and Goldie Dittemore Moser. He graduated from Troy High School in 1932. He earned a master's degree in education from the University of Missouri at Maryville. Mr. Moser taught elementary school for 20 years and then served as Doniphan County superintendent of schools for 10 years. He also was principal of Auburn Elementary School in Auburn for 13 years before retiring in 1977. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a longtime member of Lowman United Methodist Church. He married Henrietta Rapp on May 15, 1943. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Gary Moser, St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Paul Moser, Holton, and Harold Moser, St. Joseph, Mo.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia; and a brother, Raymond Moser. Funeral services were held Dec. 4 at Lowman United Methodist Church. Masquat
Rose Marjorie Walker Masquat, "Teno kwa," 71, Mayetta, died Nov. 27, 2004, at a Topeka hospital. She was born May 17, 1933, in Mayetta, the daughter of Charles Walker and Minnie Potts LeClere. She graduated from Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma. She lived most of her life on the Potawatomi Reservation near Mayetta. Mrs. Masquat served in the United States Marines during the Korean conflict. She worked at the Marine Headquarters while in the service. She also worked for Menninger's in Topeka, the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Horton, and most recently as a PBX Operator for Harrah's. She was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and American Legion Post 410 "We-ta-se" in Mayetta. She was also a member of the USMC League. She married GySgt. Eugene Masquat (USMC, ret.) on March 14, 1964, in Mayetta. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Robert Masquat and James Masquat, both of Mayetta; three daughters, Susan Torres, Gayle Masquat and Rachel Masquat, all of Mayetta; two sisters, Mary LeClere and Donita LeClere, both of Mayetta; three brothers, John LeDon LeClere and Hardy Eteyan, both of Mayetta, and Troy Littleaxe, Bartlesville, Okla.; and 12 grandchildren. Her parents and two brothers, Thomas and Harvey Walker, preceded her in death. Traditional Indian Drum Services were held Dec. 1 at the Danceground Building west of Mayetta. Burial was held Dec. 2 at Potts Cemetery
near 142nd and O Road.
Connell
Charles F. Connell Sr., 89, died Nov. 25, 2004, at a Topeka retirement center. He was born May 12, 1915, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Andrew J. and Louise M. Fischer Connell. He attended Mount Carmel High School in Chicago and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Mr. Connell was a veteran of World War II. He retired from Defense Contract Administration Services in Van Nuys, Calif., after 31 years of service. He was a former post commander of the Deek-Taxit American Legion Post in Chicago. He married Virginia Mabel Dugal on Aug. 26, 1950, in Dolton, Ill. She preceded him in death in April 2003. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Heusted and husband Harry, Topeka; a son, Chuck Connell and wife Renelda, Hoyt; and two grandchildren, Jessica Connell and T.J. Wedeking. Cremation is planned. A memorial service was held Nov. 30 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel in Topeka. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Hladky
Sandra L. Hladky, 68, Sycamore, died Nov. 21, 2004, at a Wichita hospital. She was born March 12, 1936, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Murl William and Anna Seyfferle Borton. She spent much of her early life in Phoenix, Ariz., where she graduated from high school. Mrs. Hladky was employed by American Cyanamid and JoLine Tools in California. She later moved back to Arizona before relocating to Neodesha in 1997. She was a member of the Moose Lodge and assisted with the distribution of food products at the Neodesha Service Center. She married Wayne Hladky on July 4, 1998, in Neodesha. He survives. Other survivors included her mother, Anna Borton, Neodesha; three daughters, Debra A. Lewis, Neodesha, Sandra D. Burskey, Phoenix, Ariz., and Patricia Boyd, Kingman, Ariz.; a brother, Gary Borton, Mims, Fla.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and in-laws, Sondra Hill, Soldier, and Bailey Hladky and Floyd Hladky, both of Holton. Mrs. Hladky was preceded in death by her father, two sons and a brother. Funeral services were held Nov. 26 at Penwell-Gabel Loran Fawcett Chapel in Neodesha. Burial was in Neodesha Cemetery.
Huston
Paul E. Huston, 67, Denison, died Feb. 2, 2005, at a Topeka nursing center. Funeral services are pending at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton.
Irwin
Dale Eugene Irwin, 83, Valley Falls, died Feb. 1, 2005, at a Valley Falls care center. He was born June 9, 1921, at Valley Falls, the son of Melvin and Ida Mae Summerfelt Irwin. Mr. Irwin served in the 1881st Engineers Battalion of the Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific theater during World War II. He later farmed east of Valley Falls and worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Topeka for 30 years, retiring in 1983. He was a charter member of the Valley Falls Historical Society, a life member of Valley Falls United Methodist Church, a member of Grahem-Herbers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3084 at Valley Falls and American Legion Post 142 at Perry. He married Anna Sieck on Nov. 4, 1945, at Denver, Colo. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Carol Anstaett and husband Fred, Burlingame, Linda Heinen and husband Joe, Valley Falls, and Margaret Sloan and husband Brent, Lawrence; two brothers, Earl Irwin, Valley Falls, and Clarence Irwin, Topeka; a sister, Lucile Shaw, Holton; four grandchildren, Dave Heinen and wife Amy, Karla Meyer and husband Tom, Carrie Heinen-Mihordin and husband Ron, and Matt Sloan; a great-grandson, Toby Meyer; three stepsisters, Eula Colle, Marion, and Marjorie Goldsberry and Wanda Bartch, both of Jewell; and two stepgrandchildren. Mr. Irwin was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George Irwin and Kenneth Irwin; and a stepsister, Lora Dixon. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 5 at Valley Falls United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Valley Falls Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Grahem-Herbers VFW Post 3084. Gilchrist
Dixie Allene Gilchrist, 86, Topeka, died Jan. 31, 2005, at a Topeka care center. She was born Oct. 12, 1918, at Norcatur, the daughter of Elva Earl "Jim" and Thelma Faith Sutton Vanover. She married James Arthur Gilchrist. He died Jan. 6, 1948. She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sharon Kay. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ann Forrester and husband Robert, Hoyt; a son, James L. Gilchrist and wife Nancy L., Topeka; a sister, Opal "Peg" Coultis, Topeka; two brothers, Clifton "Pete" Vanover, Houston, Texas, and Gerald Dean Vanover, Austin, Texas; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 4 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. Interment will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Gilchrist will lie in state from 3 p.m. Feb. 3 to 1 p.m. Feb. 4 at the funeral chapel. Huss
Merle Eugene Huss, 74, Mt. Morris, Mich., died Jan. 29, 2005. He was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Havensville, the son of Merle E. and Bessie Franklin Huss. Mr. Huss was self-employed as a general contractor. He and his wife moved to Mt. Morris Township, Mich., in 1960. He married Geraldine M. Farrington on Nov. 21, 1953, in Flint, Mich. She died on Aug. 8, 1997. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Bobbie Jo Ghebleh, on Dec. 11, 1996; and a son, Thomas K. Huss, on Feb. 28, 2004. Survivors include a daughter, Debra Huss, Mt. Morris, Mich.; a son, Timothy Huss and wife Charlotte, Flint, Mich.; a son-in-law, Ali Ghebleh, Grand Rapids, Mich.; a sister, Maxine June Curran, Holton; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio, Mich., with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Center for Gerontology of Flint, Mich.
