George W. Scott

George W. Scott, 60, disabled United States Army veteran, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, in Arkansas City. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, in the Winfield Veterans Cemetery. Private family viewing will be held at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today. Survivors include his children, Larry Osborne, Wichita, James House, Bartlesville, Okla., George Scott Jr., Texas City, Texas; adopted daughter, Tiffany Scott, Arkansas City; brothers, Daniel, Dwight and Donald Scott, all of Texas City, Texas; sister, Ella Hutchinson, Arkansas City; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Biglow-Bethea Funeral Home, Wichita.

Della Jane Weeks

Della Jane Weeks, 89, Arkansas City resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at the Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James "Babe" Standerfer, minister of Trinity Baptist Church of Arkansas City, officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-5 p.m. Sunday and until 9 p.m. Monday. Della was born Oct. 5, 1918, in Wagoner, Okla., the daughter of William Jessie and Martha Ann (Raines) Martin. She attended school in Wynona, Okla., until 1938, when she came to Newkirk to attend the National Youth Association for young women at Witcher Hall. While in this training school in Newkirk, Della met George Thomas Weeks, and on Nov. 22, 1940, the couple was married in Newkirk. They made their home in various towns in Oklahoma and Kansas, where her husband's job took them. In 1962, the family settled in Arkansas City where they have since resided. Della enjoyed her role as homemaker and taking care of her family. After the children were grown, she was employed at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center where she worked for 18 years. Della was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church of Arkansas City. She enjoyed playing bingo and taking care of her grandchildren. Survivors include George, her husband of just over 67 years; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Mike Mills, of Arkansas City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Janell Weeks, of Winfield, and Rick and Shelby Weeks, of Arkansas City; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, her parents, six brothers, one sister and one grandson. Family members serving as casket bearers will be Tom Weeks Jr., Bryan Weeks, Eli Templeer, Eric Templeer, John Phillip Weeks and Mike Mills. Honorary bearers are Robert Weeks, Steve Weeks, Tim Martin, Jim Weeks, Steve Martin, Mike Weeks, LeRoy Martin, Brad Martin and Matt Jirak.
A memorial fund has been established with Trinity Baptist Church. Contributions may be made to the church at 1301 South A, Arkansas City, KS 67005. Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Chester H. "Junior" Shorter Jr.

Chester H. "Junior" Shorter Jr., 60, of rural Winfield, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 16, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at Bible Christian Church, located at 2411 N. Eighth Street in Arkansas City. Interment will follow at Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. today. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Born on Feb. 13, 1947, in Winfield, he was the son of Chester "Harold" Shorter and Nellie J. (Hanna) Shorter. He was raised and attended school in Dexter where he was an outstanding basketball and baseball player. Throughout his high school years he served as council representative for the Dexter 4-H Club. He exhibited his beef and horse 4-H projects at the three Cowley County fairs as well as the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. He graduated from Dexter High School in 1965, and graduated from Cowley County Community College with an associate's degree. On Sept. 17, 1966, he married Janet M. Nellis, at the Dexter Christian Church. The couple lived in rural Dexter, where Junior farmed, ranched and they raised their children. He enjoyed attending his children's sporting events, and traveling the midwest looking for show cattle and attending cattle shows. In 1996, the couple moved to rural Winfield, where Junior continued to ranch. He was a member of the Bible Christian Church. He was also a member of the Dexter school board where he served as president for a number of years. He was on the Valley Co-op Board, the Caney Valley Rural Electric Board and was an active leader in the Cowley County 4-H programs. He served as beef superintendent for the Cowley County Fair and began the beef booster fund to assist 4-Hers in the market beef project. His love for cattle and 4-Hers led him to organize the Cowley County Classic Steer and Heifer Show in 1986. In 2005, Junior was awarded the appreciation award from the Kansas Cooperative Extension Program of Cowley County. Survivors include his wife, Janet M. Shorter of the home; son, Clinton Shorter, of Dexter; daughter, Angela Smith and husband, Kevin of Yukon, Okla.; sister, Linda Keasling and husband, Marvin, of Arkansas City; grandson, Cale Shorter; mother-in-law, Freda Nellis, of Arkansas City; brother-in-law, Norman Nellis and wife, Nancy, of Topeka; sister-in-law, Virginia Hensley and husband, Steve, of Arkansas City; and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Paul Nellis.
A memorial has been established for Cookson Hills Christian Ministries 4-Him Program (4-H). Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Johnnie "John" R. Allen

Johnnie "John" R. Allen, 67, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday Jan. 15, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center of Arkansas City. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at the Harvest Fellowship Church. The family will greet friends at the funeral home 2-4 p.m. Sunday. John was born May 18, 1940, in Aurora, Ill., to Elmer Richard and Ruth A. (Gray) Allen. He was reared in Illinois and moved to Kansas when he was 15. John served in the Army National Guard. On Feb. 2, 1960, he married Christine White, in Arkansas City. The couple lived in Arkansas City and a short time in Tulsa, returning to Arkansas City in 1976. John worked as an electrician for Cessna, K-Square, and a short time for Boeing. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, tinkering with small engines and being the family jokester. Survivors include his wife, Christine of the home; two daughters, Tonya and her husband, Greg Merry, Charity and her husband, Melvin Toon; a son, Richard Allen, all of Arkansas City; one sister, Virginia Brown, of Tulsa; and several half brothers and sisters living in Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Teehee.
A fund has been established to assist with funeral expenses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

David L. Shook

David L. Shook, 47, of Arkansas City died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at his residence. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, in the Parker Cemetery in Arkansas City. The Rev. Jim Slaughter will officiate. David was born July 1, 1960, to Dwain D. Shook and Jessie L. (Dickson) Shook in Arkansas City. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1978. David later received his LPN license from Wichita Vo-Tech. On May 2, 1999, he married Lana V. Lykova in Arkansas City, and the couple had a son. David worked at the Winfield State Hospital, Rest Care and Southwynd as a LPN. Survivors include his son, Paul V. Shook, of Winfield; father, Dwain Shook, of Arkansas City; brother, Steve Shook and wife, Verna, of Derby; sister, Rita Boyer, of Independence, and many aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents and a nephew, Caleb Boyer.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Mary Elizabeth Barnesk

Mary Elizabeth Barnes, 92, Winfield, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Winfield Rest Haven. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the New Rosemont Memorial Cemetery in Benton, Ark. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 8 p.m. Monday. The family will greet friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Born June 19, 1915, in Little Rock, Ark., she was the daughter of Rex and Florence (Wood) Roberts. She had worked at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where she was in charge of pharmaceuticals. She was a full time homemaker. Survivors include her son, Richard Ernest Barnes; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Clinton Barnes; son, Thomas Robert Barnes; brother, Paul Roberts; and sister, Rosemond Plummer.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Virginia R. Blossom

Virginia R. Blossom, 92, of Topeka, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Penwell Gabel Southwest Chapel, Topeka. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6-7:30 p.m. today. Virginia was born Sept. 20, 1915, in El Dorado, the daughter of Eugene and Jessie Marty Stebbins. She and her husband lived in several locations due to her husband's job with the railroad, returning to Topeka in January 1984. Survivors include two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Nina Schoenfeld, Nancy Baird, both of Topeka, and Mary Kay Stratton, Auburn, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert Blossom; her stepmother, Meda Stebbins; her daughter, Vicky Sowka; one grandson; sister, Lila Shinn; brother, Eugene Stebbins Jr.
A memorial has been established for the Fairlawn Church of the Nazarene. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Penwell Gabel Southwest Chapel, Topeka.

Pauline (Goff) Warren

Pauline (Goff) Warren, 94, of Arkansas City, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Joe P. Warren will officiate. Pauline was born Dec. 11, 1913, in Arkansas City, to Herman A. and Genevieve (Moore) Goff. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Ark City High School in 1932. After high school Pauline attended Arkansas City Junior College. On Sept. 4, 1932, she married Joe E. Warren in Arkansas City. The couple made their home in the Silverdale and Maple City area. Pauline worked as a secretary for her husband at the State House in Topeka, for 15 years. Pauline was involved in numerous hobbies including gardening, photography, bird egg collecting and butterfly collecting. Pauline was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her son, Jim Warren and his wife, Rita, of Arkansas City; two sisters, Genevieve Galle and Goldie Circle; five grandchildren, Joe Warren and his wife, Cindy, of San Antonio, Texas, Vicki Mohler and her husband, James, of Spokane, Mo., Debra Binford and her husband, Dwane, of Arkansas City, Tom Warren and his wife, Jolynn, of Geuda Springs, David Warren and his wife, Sharon, of Maple City; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; one infant son, David; and one daughter, Helen.
A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Pearl Scott Van Derveer Johnson

Pearl Scott Van Derveer Johnson, 96, of Blackwell, Okla., died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at the Blackwell Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with James W. Roberts officiating. Interment followed in the Braman Cemetery. She was the fifth of six children born to the 1893 Land Run pioneers, Charles Franklin Scott and Mary Wolf Scott. She was a pilot with a commercial rating in air navigation and meteorology and flew with the Civil Air Patrol. She held various supervisory jobs for United States Engineering Companies and the U.S. military throughout the Middle East and Europe, spending her last two years in Alaska. She served as a land examiner adjudicator for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management. In Kerrville, Texas, she ran an art studio and gallery and taught art. Survivors include nieces, Shirley Scott Fuller, of Blackwell, and Brook Farm, England, and Madeline Danner, of Corvallis, Ore.; two nephews, Lloyd Scott Jr., of Oklahoma City, and Robert Majors, of Oklahoma City; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Charles Sherman Van Derveer and George W. Johnson; her parents; two brothers, Roy and Lloyd Scott; three sisters, Nellie Majors, Elsie Scott Shields and Anna Scott Worley; and a niece, Mary Ann Scott Petrey.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Roberts and Son Funeral Home.

Harold Duane Lee

Harold Duane Lee, 81, of Sapulpa, Okla., formerly of Oxford, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, in Prescott, Ariz.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service.

Anna Mae Wolf Horack Roseberry

Anna Mae Wolf Horack Roseberry, 88, of Emporia, formerly of Oxford, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the Oxford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Conelley officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Anna Mae Wolf was born Aug. 4, 1919, to Henry and Amy Fredrickson Wolf, of rural Ashton, Kan. She graduated eighth grade from Kinkaid Rural School and attended South Haven High School, graduating in 1927. She lived with her sister, Doris and brother-in-law, Harold Haines, in Wichita, where she was employed at Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. Anna Mae married Ernest Horack on June 9, 1943. They farmed until 1960, when they purchased Donley Hardware and moved to Oxford. Ernest died July 11, 1962, leaving Anna Mae and their four daughters, Amy, Anita, Alane and Andrea. Anna Mae worked as treasurer for the City of Oxford and bookkeeper for Riverview Manor in Oxford. In 1964, she started working full time for Oxford Dehydrating Co., where she was employed for 21 years, until her retirement in Dec. 1984. In 1985, she married Paul Roseberry. They continued living in Oxford until September 2005. She enjoyed her life with her four daughters, their families, and her two step-sons, Alan and Ben Roseberry and their families. Paul Roseberry died Dec. 19, 2005. Anna Mae was a member of the Oxford Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and served on various committees. She enjoyed her years as a member and president of United Methodist Women. Survivors include her daughters, Amy and husband, Marshall Meades, Vermontville, Mich., Anita and husband, Cliff Bales, Oxford, Alane and husband, Steve Kemp, Kennewick, Wash., Andrea and husband, Roger Cerretti, Emporia; stepson, Ben Roseberry and wife, Beverly, Tecumseh; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sisters Harriet Coulter, Oxford, Lois Jordan and husband, James, Wichita; and brother, Henry Wolf, Caldwell, and many loving nieces, and nephews and dear friends. In addition to both husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Doris Haines; brothers, Wallace (Bud) Wolf, Carl Wolf; step-son, Alan Roseberry; daughter-in-law, Sharon Roseberry; and stepgrandson Jeff Roseberry.
A memorial has been established with the Oxford United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service, Oxford.

Shirley I. Lee

Shirley I. Lee, 73, Winfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at her home. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today. Born May 18, 1934, in Purdy, Mo., she was the daughter of Hershel and Evelyn Prier. She worked for 20 plus years for the Snyder Clinic in Winfield. She began working at the front desk and retired as business manager for the clinic. Survivors include her husband, William "Bill" Lee of the home, daughter, Melinda Duggan, Edgerton, Kan.; brother, Ronald Prier, Mathiston, Miss.; sister, Treva Black, Livingston, Texas; one granddaughter; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Lee.
A memorial has been established for the Snyder Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Jana Kaye Black

Jana Kaye Black, 42, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City. Cremation has been effected. Jana was born Feb. 25, 1965, in Arkansas City, the daughter of Ed and Sue White. She attended Arkansas City High School, graduating in 1983. She later graduated from Cowley College and Southwestern College with her bachelor's degree. On Sept. 18, 1996, she married Steven D. Black in Winfield, and the couple made their home in Arkansas City. Jana worked at the Cowley College and the hospital cafeterias. She also drove pilot cars for a short time. Survivors include her husband, Steven Black, of the home; son, Audie L. Lankford Jr. and fiancee, Maria, of Arkansas City; daughter, Kylee J. Wise and husband, Sheldon, of Newkirk; stepson, Benjamin Black, of Winfield, stepdaughters, Andrea Black, of Winfield, and Sandra Black, of Virginia; parents, Ed and Sue White, of Leon; five brothers, Jeff Bailey, of Arkansas City, Thomas Bailey and Donnie Bailey, of Missouri, Mike Bailey, of Wichita, and Mark Bailey; grandchild, Korbin Wise; stepgrandchildren, Josie Wise, Xander, Lillian and Kaden. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
The Jana K. Black Memorial has been established. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Larry Stephen (Steve) White

Larry Stephen (Steve) White, 64, longtime resident of the Braden community, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at the Faith Tabernacle Church with the Rev. Don Stanton officiating. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Steve was born Jan. 23, 1943, in Pawnee, Okla., the son of Frank E. White and Della Miller White. He was a 1961 graduate of Ponca City High School. On Sept. 9, 1966, he married Sharon Crain in Ponca City, with the couple making their first home in Arkansas City. Steve was employed 43 years with Skyline Construction of Arkansas City. The couple moved to Ponca City in the early 1970s and have lived the past 22 years in the Braden community. Steve enjoyed coaching both his girls as they participated in softball and basketball and most recently enjoyed watching his grandkids playing in different sports. Before his illness Steve loved to fish and in younger years enjoyed hunting with his dad. Steve was a very loving husband, dad and papa. Survivors include his wife, Sharon, of the home; two daughters, Shelly Fields and husband, Ray, of Shidler, Okla., and Shannon Robinson and husband, Mike, of Tonkawa, Okla.; one sister, Carolyn Kuepfer and husband, Larry, of Austin, Colo.; three grandchildren, Derika Fields, Ponca City, Danielle Fields, Shidler, and Josh Robinson, of Tonkawa; nephew, Michael Coffman and family, of Ponca City; sisters-in-law, Veda Grose and husband, Steve, and Donita Lawrence; brother-in-law, Steve Crain and wife, Sue; his mother-in-law, Beth McClelland; and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Casket bearers will be Clayton Rich, Kenneth Reed, Barry Neal, Chris Wilkey, Scott Widener and Guy Marlar.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, 1904 N. Union, Suite 103, Ponca City, OK 74601, or to the Faith Tabernacle Youth, 501 S. Fifth Street, Ponca City, OK 74601. Arrangements are under the direction of the of Grace Memorial Chapel, Ponca City.

Margot Lina "Margo" Cranford

Margot Lina "Margo" Cranford, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, in the Grandwood Assisted Living Center in Grove, Okla. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, in The Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel. Born Nov. 2, 1926, in Hanau, Germany, she was the daughter of Wilhelm Viktor Albert Baake and Line Katrina Reithel Baake. She had managed the shoe sales in Farrier's store in Grove, Okla. On May 3, 1950, she married Lathneil Albert "Al" Cranford, in Hanau, Germany. He preceded her in death. Survivors include four children, Rita Lina LeTempt and husband, Steve, William "Bill" Albert Cranford and wife, Connie, Shirley Mae Booher and husband, David, Donna Marie Mack and husband, Delmer; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a special cousin, Karl Baake. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Karl Baake and Margot's twin brother, who died at birth.
The family suggests memorials be made to Alzheimer's Association, 6465 S. Yale Ave., Tulsa, Okla. 74136-7804. Arrangements are under the direction of the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, Okla.
