Melcher, Otis Irvin
Melcher, Otis Irvin, 89, former Melcher Lumber Co. owner, farmer and horseman, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002.
Rosary 7:30 p.m. Friday; service 9 a.m. Saturday, both at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Schulte; burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Wichita.
Otis was born April 29, 1913 in Manchester, Okla., to the late I.E. Melcher and Marie Koehler Melcher. The family lived in Ellinwood, Wellington, Wichita and Goddard. He graduated from St. Mary's Cathedral, Wichita in 1931. He received his BS degree in Business Administration from Wichita University in 1936. He served over four years in World War II, mostly as captain in the infantry. One of his tours of duty was as assistant professor of Military Science and Tactics as a full-fledged Wichita University faculty instructor and member. After the war, Otis served as regimental headquarter company commander of the 353 Infantry 89th Division Reserve Corp in Wichita. His first business career was in Wichita as a sales representative for United Sash and Door Co. until he purchased Melcher Lumber Co. of Schulte, now B & B Material. In 1980 he established MELCHITA Stables as a Paso Fino horse operation, winning two National Championships and he kept one of the champions until his death. He was active in his church, serving as the first lay church president and serving for three terms. He was an active Knights of Columbus member for 67 years and was deputy grand knight. He was also the first president of the Goddard Keen Klub and was active until his death. He was a Winchester antiques collector. He loved nature, flowers and his great dog, Oso, as he did his family, people and life.
Preceded in death by wife, Jane (Jukes) Melcher; daughter, Connie Conway; brothers, Gilbert, Cleo and sister, Lorraine Curry.
Survivors: sons, Tim Melcher of Grand Lake, Okla., Brother Phillip Melcher of Society of Mary, Lima, Peru, S.A., Dennis Melcher of Haysville; daughter, Carolyn Melcher Klein of Goddard; sisters, Glenda Ross Jackson of Wichita, Vivian Stark Curry of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Pringle, Kenneth W.
Pringle, Kenneth W., 78, attorney at law, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002.
Memorial service 10 a.m. Monday, Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Pringle was born Oct. 3, 1923 in Wichita. He was a veteran of World War II. He attended the University of Kansas, was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and graduated with a BA in 1947. He attended the University of Kansas School of Law and graduated with a juris doctorate in 1950. He first practiced law in Wichita with his father, the late K.W. Pringle Sr., and subsequently joined the law firm of Collins, Hughes, Martin, Pringle and Schell. In 1968, he, Robert Martin and Bill Schell formed the law firm of Martin, Pringle and Schell. His practice emphasis was in the area of oil and gas, real estate, wills and trusts. He had been of counsel with Martin, Pringle, Oliver, Wallace and Bauer, L.L.P. since 1995.
Kenneth was active in numerous local civic and charitable organizations and was a trustee of the K.T. Wiedemann Trust, the Gladys H.G. Wiedemann Trust, and was past president and trustee of the K.T. Wiedemann Foundation. He was also a member of the American, Kansas and Wichita Bar Associations. He enjoyed playing golf and family activities.
Survivors: wife, Ruth; sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Caroline Pringle, Bruce and Shelley Pringle all of Wichita; daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and John Hankins of Wichita; sisters, Maxine Parzybok, Mary Alice Morozzo both of Wichita; nine grandchildren. Memorial established with American Diabetes Association-Kansas Chapter.

GARIC, Shirley DeBlanc, 83, of Wichita, formerly of New Orleans, LA, retired school teacher and homemaker, died Thursday, July 25, 2002.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Edwin J. Garic, parents, Manuel and Estelle (Toupard) DeBlanc, daughter, Melanie Garic Richardson.

CLARK, LAVON B. (SMITH), 85, of Wichita, Retired Wichita High School Southeast Head of Business Department Teacher, died Sunday, September 29, 2002.

Graveside services 1:00 P.M. Thursday, October 3, 2002, Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, Kansas.
Mrs. Clark was born in the Orf family home in Pierceville, Kansas on May 31, 1917 to Ira and Rosa (Orf) Smith. Mrs. Clark graduated from Lakin High School in 1935. She attended Emporia State Teacher’s College and obtained a degree in education in 1939 and a degree in commerce in 1940.
Mrs. Clark began her teaching career in Norwich, Kansas in 1940, teaching both business and physical education. She also taught in Ulysses and Plainview High School, Wichita. Mrs. Clark received a Master’s Degree in Education from Colorado College of Education in Greeley in 1944.
In 1945, she accepted a teaching position at Trinidad Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado where she met her future husband. Mrs. Clark married William E. “Bill” Clark Jr. on December 28, 1949 in Scott City, Kansas and the couple moved to Wichita in July 1950. Mrs. Clark began working as a secretary in 1951 for the Planeview Public Schools. In 1955, she joined the Wichita Public Schools as business teacher at Wichita High School West, transferring to Wichita High School Southeast when it opened in 1958. She was head of the Business Department from 1964 until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church. Preceded in death by her parents, and husband Bill in 1991.
Survivors: Daughter & son-in-law, Linda & Douglas Bowles, of Wichita, Kansas; Granddaughter, Jennifer Bowles, of Raleigh, North Carolina.
