Sherla attended elementary, junior and senior high schools in Wichita. She attended one year of college in California. Upon her return to Wichita, she attended cosmetology school and earned her license to be a manicurist. In 1966, Sherla began dating Wayne Rogers, a former high school classmate. On July 12, 1969, they were married at Northside’s building on Jackson by Louis Tandy. During the years, Wayne and Sherla dated, she studied with Odell and Wayne at a gospel meeting held by Harvey Starling. Louis Tandy baptized her. In 1974, Sherla and Wayne started their family upon the birth of their first child, Matthew and in 1977 the birth of their daughter, Andrea, completed her family. Sherla was a stay at home mom until both kids were in school. In 1983, she began part-time work as Northside’s secretary, she worked for the church 13 years. As an active member at Northside, she taught Sunday morning and Wednesday evening classes, first grade, ladies class, yearly Vacation Bible Schools, and summer camps for the youth group. For several years she acted as head cook, organizing, buying and preparing food for the youth group in Colorado. She was one of the original group of ladies who started the ongoing annual mother/daughter banquet. Sherla, Wayne, Matt and Andrea were a close knit family, doing everything as a unit. Sherla loved supporting Wayne in helping coach baseball and soccer teams, taking Andrea to gymnastics, volunteering at school activites and “burning up the road” between here and O.C. where both kids attended college. In 1985, Sherla and her family began their battle with cancer. After initial treatment, she was cancer free until 1988 when the cancer returned. She again underwent treatment and again was cancer free until 1998 when the breast cancer returned after radiation treatment, she again conquered the disease. In 2002 she was again attacked only this time the enemy was mantle cell lymphoma. Throughout the years battling cancer, she remained faithful to her Lord. Sherla wanted to be a good Christian example, drawing from her faith in the Lord. She wanted all to know she survived only because of the grace, mercy and strength drawn from God and the love, support, and prayers of her physical and spiritual family. If you are sitting here today reading the story of Sherla’s life and you don’t know you have to take responsibility for your own health, physically and spiritually, no one else can do those two things for you. She wanted all who knew her and most especially her family to meet with her again in heaven, so be spiritually healthy by living your life faithful to your Lord, obeying His commands, worshiping Him, so by his grace of mercy, you can be with Sherla again.
