Fugate, Ann (Aldrich)
Fugate, Ann (Aldrich), died April 17, 2003. She would like to be remembered as a good wife, mother, grandmother, founder and friend. We will remember Ann for her grace and determination. Celebration of Life Service, College Hill United Methodist Church, 2:00 pm, Monday, April 21, 2003. Private graveside service.
Ann was born in Enid, Oklahoma in 1937. She was the only child of Fern Portwood and M.A. ‘Al’ Aldrich and the stepdaughter of Bernice P. Aldrich. She attended school in Snyder, Oklahoma, Amarillo and San Antonio, Texas, and graduated from Carlsbad, New Mexico High School in 1955. She attended Christian College, University of New Mexico, and graduated with a degree in fashion arts from Oklahoma University in 1959. She and Justus H. Fugate, Jr. were married in 1959. She enjoyed a long association with the Junior League of Wichita. As a League project she concluded the state needed a Planned Parenthood chapter. In spite of its controversial nature at the time, Ann founded the Wichita chapter, and served three terms as its first President. In 1998, she was honored at the 25th Anniversary Celebration as the Founder of Planned Parenthood of Kansas. Also in 1998, Ann was honored in the Wichita State University Plaza of Heroines “for the lovely spirit that shines through to everyone whose life she touched.” The same year she was selected for the Daniel Caliendo Jr. “Life Worth Living Award” which goes to someone who has served as an outstanding example to the disabled community. When she accepted the award, she stated “I never thought of myself as handicapped.” She enjoyed many summers in New Mexico with family and friends. Other interests included needlepoint, cross stitch, travel, reading, scrapbooking, cooking and entertaining. University students lived and worked in her home for over 30 years. She was an inspiration to them. These students included Laura S. Bornholdt – the daughter she wished was her own.
Ann is survived by her husband of 43 years, Justus H. Fugate, Jr. She is also survived by her son, Kenneth J. Fugate and wife Nancy K. Fugate. Grandchildren are Alexander J. Fugate and Benjamin C.
