Louis was a Veteran of WWII serving in the Army. He was a longtime member of both Woodland UMC and Albert Pike Lodge # 303. He was active with the American Red Cross in volunteer services. Louis will always be remembered as an inventor and collector and always having a story to tell.
Preceded by first wife and childhood sweetheart Evelyn on December 21, 1992.

Chavez, Peter C.
Chavez, Peter C., 80, musician and retired United States Postal Service letter carrier, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003. Rosary, 7:30 PM, Friday, Downing & Lahey Mortuary West; service, 10:30 AM, Saturday, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Mr. Chavez was born February 23, 1923 in Wichita. He served in the United States Army as a heavy mortar crewman during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He was decorated twice with the Purple Heart and received numerous other decorations and citations. Preceded in death by parents, Francisca and Emigdio (Emiliano) Chavez; daughter, Maria K. Ponce. Survivors: wife, Blasa; sons, Robert, Richard and Peter, all of Wichita, Daniel of Houston; daughters, E. Joann Tejeda, Stella Cruz, and Christa Hernandez all of Wichita, Roberta “Bobbie” Cline of Fresno, CA; sister, Gabriela Viramontes of Wellington; 34 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. Decker, Harold A.
Decker, Harold A., 89, died Monday, June 16. Memorial service, 3:30 P.M. Saturday, July 5, First Presbyterian Church.
From 1944 to 1957, he headed the voice and choral departments at WSU. In 1957 he left to chair the choral division at the Univ. of Illinois. During his tenure, he created the first doctoral program designed specifically for choral directors. Over 75 graduates of this program have filled some of the most prestigious positions in choral music in the nation. Dr. Decker inspired teachers and conductors to seek musical excellence and encouraged audiences across the country to open their ears and hearts to great music. His devotion to fostering the highest standards in the teaching and performing of choral music, and his enduring love for his profession are among his legacies. He was the recipient of the Robert Shaw Award, the highest award given by the American Choral Directors Assoc., a group he, as a charter member, saw grow from 45 members in 1958 to over 20,000 today. He was also the author of two textbooks and numerous articles for professional journals.
He was actively involved in his church, a member of the Downtown Lions Club and a resident of Georgetown Village.
Harold is survived by his son Jay and wife Phyllis of Wichita; daughter Kathe Thompson and husband John of Wellington, FL; grandchildren Dana Gore, of Lawrence, KS, Deborah Gans and husband Ron, of Prairie Village, KS, Dan Decker and wife Debbie, of E. Setauket, N.Y., Melissa Carlson and husband Curt, of Wellington, FL, Matthew Browne, of El Paso, TX,; step-grandchildren, Kim Coe and husband Kevin, of Wichita, KS, Kelley Naron, of Wichita, KS; nine great grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren. Born Christmas Day, 1928 in Carter, OK and married Norma Lee Jabara, April 6, 1952. He founded Money Town Pawn Shop in 1966 and in 1974 encouraged by his knowledge and love of fine jewelry, he opened Jewelry Savers. Survivors include his childhood sweetheart and wife of 51 years, Norma Ellis; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Pete Brier; son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Jonna Ellis; brother, Dr. Harvey Ellis; sisters, Ruth Faroh of Wichita and Marie Shabkie of Studio City, CA; five grandchildren, Shanda, Michelle and Paige Brier, Spencer and Kasey Ellis, all of Wichita. Williams, Katherine (Kay), 91, formerly of Wichita, retired medical assistant, died Saturday, June 28, 2003. She was a charter member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and was also a member of Eastern Star, Emery Chapter, Martins Ferry, OH. Surviving is a daughter, Jo Ann Fiddelke of Arlington, TX; granddaughter, Beth Gruenke of Spokane, WA; grandson, Todd Fiddelke of Arlington, TX; two great-grandsons. George, Maureen C.
George, Maureen C., 56, Husch & Eppenberger attorney, died Friday, July 4, 2003. Visitation with the family, Monday, 5-8 PM, Downing & Lahey Mortuary West; memorial service, 11 AM, Tuesday, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Interment to follow in Silver Spring, MD. Maureen was born April 2, 1947 in Providence, RI. She married Michael George in Washington, DC, on September 24, 1994. She was a devoted mother and attorney. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland and graduated Magna cum Laude with her Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University. Throughout her career, she was a devoted public servant. Early on, Maureen worked for the U.S. Postal Service and the the U.S. Navy. She later dedicated her time and energy to improving public education by working as an attorney for the Department of Defense Domestic Schools System, then as the school board attorney for Escambia County, Florida, and finally in private practice with the firm of Husch & Eppenberger here in Wichita. She also donated her time to serving as a member of the Wichita Public Schools Desegregation/Diversity Committee. Survivors: husband, Michael; daughter, Emily M. Lindsey-Reeves of Atlanta, GA; parents, Charles and Rosalyn Clancy of Silver Spring, MD; brothers, Dennis of Hyde Park, VT, Michael of Olney, MD, Kevin of Eldersburg, MD, and Patrick of Rockville, MD. Mabe, Archer K.
Archer (Arch) K. Mabe passed on July 4th, 2003 at 4:20 a.m. at Via Christi - St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He was born on June 28th, 1924 in Gary, West Virginia to Mary Elizabeth Archer Mabe and Frazier Mabe. Mr. Mabe was a Corporal in the USMC, serving in World War II in the South Pacific. On November 12, 1948 he married the love of his life Sylvia Francis Strader in Chatum, Virginia. Mr. Mabe graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1949 with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. and Mrs. Mabe moved to Wichita in the summer of 1949 where he was employed as a mechanical engineer at Cessna Aircraft until 1970. He was employed by Piper Aircraft in Vero Beach, Florida from 1969 to 1979, when he returned to Wichita and worked again for Cessna, and later Beech Aircraft. Many of Mr. Mabe’s designs continue to be used in many aircraft such as the Cessna P-210 and 172, the Piper Saratoga, and Beech Hawker. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge. Mr. Mabe was pre-deceased by his beautiful wife, Sylvia Strader Mabe, his father, Frazier Mabe, his mother, Mary Elizabeth Mabe, his brother, Donald Frazier Mabe, and a son-in-law, Stefan Robert Glaser. He is survived by his sister, Betty Mabe Maynard, daughters, Lanita Mabe Glaser and Mary Elizabeth Mabe Kondziola and son, Kendall Allen Mabe. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and one great-grandson. They put the sparkle in his eyes and a smile on his face. They are Leah Beth Glaser Grim, Scott Robert Glaser Leasa Renae Mabe, Carly Christine Glaser, Alan Frazier Mabe, Joseph Archer Kondziola, Amy Kathleen Kondziola, Emily Grace Kondziola, Christa Caroline Kondziola and Valon Jacob Newberry. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, July 6 at 1:00 - 3:00 at the Downing & Lahey Funeral Home - East Chapel in Wichita. Services will be at the Calvary United Methodist Church at 10:00am Monday July 7th followed by burial services at the Lakeview Cemetery in Wichita. Ayers, William "Bill" W.
Ayers, William “Bill” W.,76, retired State Farm Insurance agent, died Fri. July 4, 2003. Service will be held 2:00 Tues. at Grace Presbyterian Church. Bill was born Jan. 13, 1927, in Topeka Ks., to Florence E. Sites Ayers and Walter C. Ayers. Upon Graduation from Wichita North High School he entered the United States Navy, and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Ayers was a graduate of Wichita University in 1950. While in college he met his beloved wife of 53 years, Donna Marie Dye, and they married Sept. 3, 1949. Upon graduation he worked for the Coleman Company as a salesman, in Minnesota. He returned to Wichita to begin his career as a State Farm Insurance and served the Wichita community in that capacity for 39 ½ years before retiring in 1995. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, a past president of the Wichita Air Capitol Cosmopolitan Club, and a member of Grace Presbyterian Church. Mr. Ayers is survived by his wife Donna. His Son; Mitchell and daughter-in-law April Ayers and Daughter Peggy and son-in-law Daniel Corman all of Derby. Four Grandchildren; Misty White, Summer McDonald, Kyle Corman and Christopher Corman. One Great-grandchild; Nolan McDonald. Memorials have been established with: Grace Presbyterian Church 5002 E. Douglas Wichita, KS 67208 and Kansas Humane Society 4218 S.E. Tharp, James Russell
Tharp, James Russell, 86, retired high school principal and sales representative., died Tuesday, July 15, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, in the chapel at East Heights United Methodist Church. James was born August 2, 1916 in Sterling, KS., the youngest of four sons of James Garfield Tharp and Martha Jane Anderson Tharp. He graduated from Ford High School in Ford, KS., Dodge City Junior College, Fort Hays Kansas State College with a B. A. and from Kansas University with a Master’s Degree in School Administration. He served as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WWII, then as High School Principal in Ellinwood, KS and in Tribune, KS., then began a career as a sales representative eventually with the S. A. Long Company in Wichita. James married Margaret Van Duser on May 25, 1941, in Fredonia, KS. They had a family of five children: Jeffrey, Patricia, Janet, Gregory and Thomas, of whom all but Jeffrey survive him. Jeffrey died in March 1975 at age 30. James and Margaret also have eight grandchildren: Cynthia and Dean Maxwell, Ashley, Jake and Pete Skakal, Tyler, John and Rachel Tharp. After retiring, Jim did volunteer escort service at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Wichita for a number of years. The Tharps have been members of East Heights United Methodist Church for the past fifty

Survived by her husband of 42 years, Leo Ritter; children, JoAnn and John Corwin, Carmen and Randy Martin, Frank Ritter, and Robert and Cindy Ritter; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Gert worked as a teacher’s aide and a childcare provider for many years. She was very active in her church, and enjoyed her grandchildren and traveling. Magsalin, Dr. Romulo “Romy”, 62, retired physician, died Monday, July 21, 2003. Service 9:30 A.M., Saturday, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Survivors: Beloved husband to his wife, Teodora; Caring father to his son, Leo Marc Magsalin of Wichita and his daughters, Rhanda Marie Magsalin and Rachel Anne Magsalin, brother, Pedro Magsalin, sisters, Emelita Magsalin and Yolanda Umali, all of Manila, Philippines. Dr. Magsalin lived and raised his family in Wichita for 28 years. He held his practice in Haysville, KS before his retirement for 20 years. He was an avid golfer and great friend to us all.
