Cary
Nadine Leota Cary, 94, Sutherlin, Ore., died Jan. 18, 2005, at her home. She was born Jan. 5, 1911, in Circleville, the daughter of Jeff and Netty Elizabeth Johnson Snyder. Mrs. Cary and her husband farmed in Kansas until moving in 1938 to Bend, Ore., where she worked as a waitress for several years. They later moved to Coquille, Ore., where she worked at a plywood mill. After her retirement, they moved to Roseburg, Ore. She was affiliated with First Christian Church in Roseburg for many years. She married Orvan Cary on Dec. 9, 1931, in Circleville. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Francis; a sister, Grace; and two brothers, Lewis and Warren. Survivors include a brother, Eldon Snyder and wife Evelyn, Cornelius, Ore.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Jan. 26 at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Wilson's Chapel of the Roses was in charge of arrangements.

Bacon
William A. Bacon, 88, Aberdeen, Miss., died Jan. 12, 2005, at an Aberdeen hospital. He was born Dec. 18, 1916, in Chickasaw County, the son of Waddie Anthony Bacon and Nannie Lou Grimes Bacon. Mr. Bacon was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He lived the past 45 years in Aberdeen and worked for Aberdeen City Schools. He also was a deputy sheriff, a policeman and a retired farmer. He was a member of Aberdeen First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Reba Lavelle Hood Bacon, Aberdeen, Miss.; a daughter, Linda Bacon Massey and husband Harry, Holton; two sons, William Armon "Bill" Bacon Jr. and wife Sandra, Enterprise, Ala., and Robert Anthony "Tony" Bacon and wife Dannye, Houston, Texas; two sisters, Betty Parchman, Amory, Miss., and Lilly White, Mobile, Ala.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held Jan. 15 at Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen, with the Rev. R.D. Cline and the Rev. Mark Stokes officiating. Burial was in Oddfellows Rest Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to First Baptist Church of Holton or Aberdeen First Baptist Church.

Kerwin
Rita M. Kerwin, 78, St. Marys, died March 28, 2005, at a Topeka hospital. She was born May 10, 1926, at Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Fred and Pauline Krier Kaullen. She grew up in Jefferson City and later moved to Kansas City, Mo., where she graduated from Bishop Hogan High School in 1944. She then attended St. Marys College in Leavenworth, where she received a bachelor of science degree in music education and English in 1948. Mrs. Kerwin was a teacher, first teaching in Leroy, then in St. Marys, where she taught band, vocal music and English. She also taught in Hoyt and Onaga, and was a substitute teacher in many communities while raising her family. She taught private music lessons to numerous local youth for more than 30 years. She and her husband made their home in the Delia area for more than 46 years before moving to St. Marys in 1998. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia, where she served as Altar Society president, church organist and vocalist. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. She married Robert A. "Bob" Kerwin on June 2, 1951, at Kansas City, Mo. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Kevin Kerwin and wife Tammy, Delia, and Patrick Kerwin, St. Louis, Mo.; three daughters, Marita Ronnau and husband Charles, St. Marys, Jean Poppelreiter and husband John, Maple Hill, and Janet Foresman and husband Gene, Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Kerwin, Delia; a brother, Fred P. Kaullen, Lillian, Ala.; a sister, Barbara Marshall, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Mrs. Kerwin was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael A. Kerwin, on Nov. 19, 2001; and a sister, Mary T. Whitfield. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. April 1 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at St. Marys. Mrs. Kerwin will lie in state after 2 p.m. March 31 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. March 31. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the ALS Foundation, sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple, St. Marys, KS 66536.

Weilert
Colleen Weilert, 61, Wamego, died March 26, 2005. She was born Feb. 15, 1944, in Independence. She grew up in Longton and Humboldt. Mrs. Weilert and her family settled in Wamego in 1976. She worked at Wamego Middle School. She was an active member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church. She married Mike Weilert. He survives. Other survivors include three sons, Brad Weilert, Holton, Brian Weilert and John Weilert; a daughter, Michaela; her mother, Ruth Ballenger; two brothers, Pete Ballenger and Lynn Ballenger; and eight grandchildren, Levi, Baker, Taryn, Ashlyn, Caleb, Elizabeth, Joel, and Matthew. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. April 1 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Wamego. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. March 31 at the church. Burial will be at 4 p.m. April 1 at the Catholic cemetery at Humboldt. Memorial contributions may be made to the P.R.A.Y. Mission, sent in care of First National Bank of Wamego.

Brooks
Mickie Ann Brooks, 58, Topeka, died March 27, 2005, at a Topeka hospice. She was born Feb. 11, 1947, in Atchison, the daughter of Barnett F. and Loretta Nadine Hulett Ball. She graduated from Perry-Lecompton High School in 1964. Mrs. Brooks worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 32 years. She was a member of Perry Christian Church and Telephone Pioneers. She married Howard E. Brooks Jr. on Dec. 12, 1964 in Perry. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Howard E. Brooks III and Troy B. Brooks, both of Topeka; a daughter, Tracy A. Hill, Topeka; her mother, Loretta Nadine Ball, Meriden; two brothers, Ronald Ball, Topeka, and Gary Ball, Holton; two sisters, Patricia Duncan, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Judy Anderson, Topeka; eight granddaughters; and four stepgranddaughters. She was preceded in death by her father, Barnett Ball. A funeral service was held March 30 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in north Topeka. Interment will be in Grantville Cemetery. Kimmi
Warren Henry Kimmi, 84, Holton, died March 26, 2005, at a Holton care facility. He was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Severance, the son of Walter William and Blanche Pearl Laverentz Kimmi. He graduated from Severance High School in 1939 and from Highland Junior College in 1941. Mr. Kimmi farmed in Doniphan and Atchison counties in his early years and worked for Agricultural Soil Conservation Services for two years in Troy. He worked for Production Credit Association in Atchison and Holton for 34 years, serving as vice president of the association. He was an active member of First Christian Church in Holton, where he served as an elder, a deacon, a trustee and chairman of the church board. He was a 46-year member of the Holton Lions Club, where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow with the club and had perfect attendance for 38 years before his health failed. He also was a past member of the Holton Country Club. He married Mary Catherine Burden on Dec. 11, 1943, in Everest. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Warren Eugene Kimmi and wife Mary, Wichita, and Duane Walter Kimmi and wife Kathi, Holton; a daughter, Janet Elaine Kennedy and husband Paul, Mayetta; a brother, Eldon A. Kimmi and wife Barbara, Atchison; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Dale Kimmi, in 2001. Services were held March 29 at First Christian Church in Holton. Burial was in Holton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church or Jackson County Friends of Hospice, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.

Sigg
Hazel "Mildred" Sigg, 83, Topeka, formerly of Holton, died March 25, 2005, at a Topeka care facility. She was born April 9, 1921, in Corning, the daughter of Marion Sanford and Leona Elizabeth Watkins Morrow. She graduated from Soldier High School in 1939. Mrs. Sigg taught elementary school near Soldier for two years. She lived in Holton for many years before moving to Topeka, where she worked for Pelletier's Department Store. She married Raymond Sigg on Aug. 13, 1941, in Lyndon. He died Dec. 21, 1999. Survivors include a son, Mark Sigg and wife Karen, Topeka; a sister, Lucille Waller, Carter Lake, Iowa; three grandchildren, Eric Sigg and wife Crystal, Andover, Stephanie Sigg, New York, N.Y., and Ryan Sigg, Olathe; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Logan Sigg, both of Andover. Funeral services were held March 28 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in Soldier Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.

Shoff
Doris L. Shoff, 83, Holton, died March 23, 2005, at Holton Community Hospital. She was born Jan. 26, 1922, east of Holton, the daughter of Walter Edward and Carrie Ann Todd Tudor, the oldest of five children. She attended Philo Grade School and graduated from Holton High School in 1940. Mrs. Shoff worked at the Jackson County Courthouse in various offices after graduation, and she was later employed by Albert Cole and Harry Crosswhite Law Office. She worked as a secretary for Bottenberg Auto and BMB Manufacturing from 1950 until her retirement 31 years later. After retirement, she served First Presbyterian Church as a mission volunteer at Sheldon Junior College in Sitka, Alaska, and Pikeville College in Pikeville, Ky. She had written a column for The Holton Recorder, "Never On Monday," since 1984, and worked part-time at the SRS office in Holton. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Holton, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, deacon and elder. She was a Menninger Bible Class graduate and received the 1985 Outstanding Alumna Award for community service. She also was a member of the Violet Club, Elk Valley Grange, Holton Business Women, Tourist Club, Chapter P, PEO Sisterhood, East Grant Extension Unit, Bookman Club, DAR and Mary L. Bair Post 44 American Legion. She was a charter member of the Jackson County Historical Society and was a Friends of Hospice volunteer. She married Charles Robert Shoff on July 25, 1950, at Norton. He died Dec. 19, 1973. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard Tudor. Survivors include a brother, Edward Tudor, Shreveport, La.; two sisters, Helen Hunter, Topeka, and Phyllis Zibell, Holton; 10 nieces and nephews; 26 great-nieces and nephews; and seven great-great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held March 26 at First Presbyterian Church in Holton. Private family burial will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Sheldon Jackson College or Beck-Bookman Library, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.

Clark
Roberta A. "Bobbe" Clark, 81, Topeka, died March 22, 2005, at a Topeka hospice. She was born Oct. 19, 1923, in Delia, the daughter of Robert and Almina Redmon Keller. She attended school at Blanden, a one-room schoolhouse on the Potawatomi reservation. The family moved east of Mayetta when she was 9, and she attended Tutt School, where she was taught by her sister, Bessie. The family later moved to Rock Island, Wash., during the Depression, and she attended school in Wenatchee, Wash. She moved to Topeka in 1938 to live with her sister, Charlotte Holt, and she graduated from Highland Park High School in 1941. Mrs. Clark worked for Topeka dentist Dr. Lindsay Osburn during her senior year in high school and through the start of World War II. She met her first husband during this time, and she was able to travel with him on some of his military assignments until his death at the end of the war. Afterward, she continued to work for various dentists in Topeka and taught at a dental hygienist school in Salina. She was president of the local and state Certified Dental Assistant Associations, and a member of the Arab Shrine Ladies and the Queen of Spades Garden Club. She married Jack Ketchum on June 6, 1942. He was killed in a military airplane crash at the end of World War II. She married Bud Young in 1946. He preceded her in death. She married W. Roy "Bill" Clark in 1977 in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Bessie Keller Holcomb, Wenatchee, Wash., and Helen Keller Anderson, Seattle, Wash.; and three stepdaughters, Judy Craig and Pam Shelor, both of Topeka, and Robin Fernkopf, Holton. In addition to her first two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Orville Robert Keller and Otho Georgie Keller; and four sisters, Elva Keller, Charlotte Keller Holton, Goldie Keller O'Brian and Lucille Keller Clark. Cremation is planned. A memorial service was held March 25 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Private inurnment was in the Resurrection Mausoleum at Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery. Brown
Alice Irene Brown, 82, Lawrence, died March 21, 2005, at her home. She was born Jan. 31, 1923, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Archibald H. and Ferne Brown Woodrow. She attended Oskaloosa High School, where she was the school's first female drum major, graduating in 1940. Mrs. Brown worked for the American Red Cross during World War II. Her husband was sent to Manila in 1946 and she joined him there a year later. They returned to the United States in 1948, landing in Lawrence. She participated in the University of Kansas Audio Reader Program from 1979 to 2003. She was a member of PEO, Chapter AZ, from 1978 to 2005 and the No Name Club from 1950 to 2005. She married Dr. Forrest Dean Brown in 1944. He died in 2001. Survivors include three daughters, Connie Bryan, Linwood, Sheryl Shockey, Overland Park, and Candace Brown Mastio, Lawrence; a son, Doug Brown, Lawrence; five grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew; and a brother-in-law, Bob Brown, Holton. Memorial services were held March 26 at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Private inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. Thirteenth St., Lawrence, KS 66044-3402. Montgomery
Philecta Steglin Montgomery, 91, Leavenworth, died March 20, 2005, at a Leavenworth care center. She was born March 3, 1914, in Holton, the daughter of Edward and Josephine Dauber Steglin. Mrs. Montgomery moved to Leavenworth in 1956, where she maintained an active role in the PTA at North Broadway School and worked in the school cafeteria. She volunteered in the Xaviar school system lunch program after retiring from North Broadway School in 1976. She was a lifetime member of Holton First Presbyterian Church, where she served as superintendent before her marriage, and also was a member of the Fort Leavenworth Post Chapel and the Community of Christ congregations. She served as a Boy Scout den mother and as vice president of TREA Ladies Auxiliary. She married Lloyd Blake Montgomery on Jan. 23, 1944, in Holton. He died Oct. 25, 1995. She also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Jay Steglin and Harold Steglin. Survivors include a son, Blake Edward "Eddie" Montgomery and wife Mary; a sister, Arlena Wales, Vallejo, Calif.; a grandson, James Blake Montgomery and wife Kim; and a granddaughter, Laura J. Montgomery. Funeral services were held March 23 at Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth, with Chaplain Sam Sanford officiating. Burial was in Holton Cemetery, with graveside services conducted by the Rev. David Choate. Memorial contributions may be made to Community of Christ Church or Rock of Ages Church.
