Joe Potucek
OXFORD - Joe Kinlund Potucek, 68, of Oxford, died Oct. 2, 1997, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. today in Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Kidney Foundation. Contributions can be made through Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home.
Potucek was born March 5, 1929, on a farm near Portland, a son of Charles William and Lulu (Kinlund) Potucek. He was raised in Sumner County.
On Dec. 26, 1949, he married Joan Trimble at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. For a short time, they lived in Chilocothe, Mo., where he attended business college. Then they returned to Sumner County and farmed in the South Haven and Oxford areas for many years.
His wife died Dec. 18, 1992. In late 1993, he moved to Oxford.
Potucek was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church.
Survivors include four sons, Mike Potucek, South Haven, Jim Potucek and David Potucek, both of Oxford, and Charles Potucek, Woodward, Okla.; four daughters, Anna Russell, Mayfield, Sara Crum, Salina, and Jane Hamilton and JoDe Jones, both of Oxford; two brothers, Charles W. Potucek Jr., Hutchinson, and Max D. Potucek, Wichita; three sisters, Marjorie McCauley and Virginia Ann Finley, both of Sacramento, Calif., and Rita Miller, Los Angeles; 23 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Dorothy Bain
CASPER, Wyo. - Dorothy Ada Beardsley Bain, 77, of Casper, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 28, 1997, at Poplar Living Center in Casper.
Private services will be held with burial in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
north of Arkansas City. Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper is in charge of arrangements.
Bain was born March 21, 1920, in Bridgeport, Conn., to George and Stella (Fox) Beardsley.
On July 17, 1937, she married William Bain in Newkirk, Okla. They moved to Casper in 1956. She worked for many businesses in Casper, as a seamstress, waitress, drycleaner and cook. The Bains moved to Winfield in 1975 and later retired here.
After Mr. Bain's death in 1988, she returned to Casper to be near her three sons. This last year she had been residing at Poplar Living Center.
Survivors include three sons, Lesley Bain and Clyde W. "Bill" Bain, both of Casper, and John A. Bain, Cheyenne, Wyo.; a sister, Grace Barnhart, Augusta; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Steven Troyer
SALINA - Steven Eugene Troyer, 33, of Salina, died Oct. 1, 1997, in Salina.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Geisendorf-Rush Smith Funeral Home in Salina. The Rev. Kerry Ninemire will officiate. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.
Troyer was born May 29, 1964, in Burlington, Colo., a son of Robert and Barbara Troyer.
He married Eugenia Lee Brake of Winfield. They had lived in the Salina area for 14 years after moving there from Goodland.
Troyer worked at Exide.
Survivors include his wife, Eugenia Lee Troyer, and a daughter, Melissa Troyer, both of Salina; his parents, Robert and Barbara Troyer, and a brother, Dallas Troyer, all of Scott City; five sisters, Jerri Casida, Lindsborg, Julie Ziegler, Salina, Barb Garner, Bird City, Karen Boyd, Bakersfield, Calif., and LaVona Niles, Goodland; and his grandmothers, Della Sawhill, Springdale, Ark., and Beulah Troyer, Fort Morgan, Colo.
Wilbur Braden
Services for Wilbur Braden, 85, who died Sept. 29, 1997, were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 2 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Richard Coldwell officiated. Special vocal music was "How Great Thou Art."
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Lee Gill
HOWARD - Services for Lee E. Gill, 66, who died Aug. 5, 1997, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 in Howard Cemetery. The Rev. Kibum Kim officiated.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Jean C. Hickman
ARKANSAS CITY - Jean C. Hickman, 83, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 2, 1997, at South Central Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City. Services are planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Arkansas City First Presbyterian Church Chapel. The Rev. Tom Clymer and the Rev. Philip Hirtzel will officiate. A private burial will be held at Riverview Cemetery
at a later date.
A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.
Hickman was born Oct. 14, 1913, in Oxford. She was the daughter of Noble C. and Irma (Coldwell) Dunn. She was educated in Oxford and Arkansas City, and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1930.
She graduated from Arkansas City Junior College in 1932, and the University of Kansas in 1934. After graduation she worked as a laboratory technician for the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
She married Donald Hickman on Dec. 14, 1940, in Arkansas City, where the couple continued to make their home. He preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1994.
During World War II, she worked for William Newton Memorial Hospital and the Doctor's Hospital of Washington, D.C.
Hickman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, PEO, Hypatia Club, The Kansas University Alumni Association and various area civic groups.
Survivors include a daughter, Harriet Hickman of Wichita.
Orval Payne
Orval S. Payne, 98, longtime resident of Route 4, Winfield, died Oct. 3, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and before services Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.
Payne was born Nov. 6, 1898, in Bates County, Mo., to George Benjamin and Emma Belle (Crowther) Payne. The family moved to Chautauqua County where he was raised in the Shiloh community and educated in Dexter and rural schools.
When he was 19, Payne was offered a position on the St. Louis Browns baseball team, but he was unable to accept.
On Sept. 26, 1920, he married Clara Faye French in Cedar Vale. They lived and worked on farms in the Cedar Vale area before moving to a farm northwest of Winfield in 1930. There he managed LaGonda Dairy Farms. The Paynes moved to their dairy farm on Route 4 in 1948 and owned and operated the dairy until retiring in 1963.
Following retirement, they spent 13 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. Clara Payne died Feb. 4, 1986.
Orval Payne was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winfield. He was also affiliated with the Winfield Saddle Club and the National Ayrshire Breeders Association
Survivors include his sons, Norman D. Payne, Winfield, N. Leon Payne, Pawhuska, Okla., and Francis Payne, Cottonwood, Ariz.; a sister, Ethel Burgess, El Dorado, Ark.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
LeeEtta Williard
Services for LeeEtta Moss Williard, 77, who died Sept. 30, 1997, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The Rev. Dennis King officiated. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, southeast of Atlanta.
Special music selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace," performed by Christine Peters and Bessie Johnson, and "Go Rest High on that Mountain," performed by Vince Gill. Lois Harris was organist.
Casket bearers were Mike and Pat Galbraith, Vance Handlin, Jim Havens, Dave Martin, Ty Peterson and Clint Williard.
A memorial has been established with Home Health Care at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Joe Potucek
OXFORD - A Rosary for Joe Potucek, 68, who died Oct. 2, 1997, was said at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford. The Rev. Mike Nolan led the recitation, and John A. Potucek II gave the eulogy. Music selections were "Amazing Grace" and "Go Rest High on That Mountain."
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. The Rev. Mike Nolan was the celebrant. Jessica Gregory was the lector; Dorothy Groene, the organist, and Sharon Short, the vocalist.
Music selections were "Here I Am, Lord," "On Eagle's Wings," "Psalm 25" and "Gift of Finest Wheat."
Burial was in Oxford Cemetery.
Honorary casket bearers were Gene Rau, Darl Parsons, John Kromka, Wayne Walter, Ray Lemon and Tom Bliss.
Casket bearers were Eric Russell, Clint, Curt, Jason and Ryan Potucek and Adam Russell.

Roy Porter
Roy Lee Porter, 46, of Winfield, died Oct. 5, 1997, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center Cemetery.
Porter was born in Stillwater, Okla., in 1951 and in 1963 moved to Winfield where he resided until his death.
Survivors include his mother, Charlesetta Horton, Wichita; 11 brothers, James Porter, Oklahoma, Charles and Val Porter, both of Arkansas, and Chris, Leroy, Calvin, George, Grant, Edward, Herbert and David Porter, all of Wichita; and five sisters, Rosemary Porter, Carolyn Porter, Molly Porter Horton, Ruby Porter Horton and Leona Porter Horton, all of Wichita.
Norma Snook
Norma Lee Snook, 70, of 615 Harter, Winfield, died Oct. 6, 1997, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Ken Davidson will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 9.

Snook was born Jan. 17, 1927, in LaSalle County, Ill., to Clifton Harvey and Irene Louise (Brooker) Snook. When she was nine years old, the family moved to Kansas where she was raised on Cowley County farms. She was educated at Fairview rural school, Winfield High School and Dexter High School.
As a young woman, she worked for Kroger Food Stores. She later worked for Dillons Food Stores. During the 1960s she began employment at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and retired from the hospital laundry department after more than 24 years of service
Snook was a longtime member of First Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Grant, Arkansas City, and Marilyn Sheely, Ponca City, Okla.; a brother, Vernon Snook, Arkansas City; and a special friend, Freda Underwood, Winfield.
