Ralph Stiles

Ralph T. Stiles, 90, of 1726 E. Seventh in Winfield, died Oct. 7, 1997, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.

Private memorial services will be held later. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with Winfield Meals on Wheels and the Grenola Historical Society. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Stiles was born Aug. 26, 1907 in Grenola to Fred and Nora (Hobaugh) Stiles. Raised and educated in the Grenola area, he attended Grenola High School.

As a young man he began work in the oil industry.

On March 20, 1940, he married Jewell U. Gulick of Houston, Mo. They lived and worked in Hawthorne and Reno, Nev., during World War II. They later resided in Ephrata, Wash., and Odessa, Texas, before moving to Winfield in 1954.

Stiles was employed for 10 years by Deal Lumber Co. in Winfield and later served 10 years as a field representative for the Kansas State Department of Revenue. After he retired from state service in 1973, he and his wife managed McCord Mobile Manor in Winfield for 13 years.

Stiles had resided at Walnut Hill Nursing Center since November 1996.

A member of Central Baptist Church of Winfield, he was formerly affiliated with the Winfield Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Jewell "Judy" Stiles, Winfield; a brother, Homer Stiles, Augusta; two nephews and three nieces.

Ethel Miller

Ethel L. Miller, 89, of Winfield, died Oct. 7, 1997, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery. The casket will remain closed at all times.

A memorial has been established with the Tisdale United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made at the church or Miles Funeral Service.

Miller was born July 26, 1908, at Burden to Aubrey and Hattie (Triplett) Peninger. She was raised and educated in the Burden area and attended Burden High School.

As a young woman she was employed in domestic work.

In 1928 she married H. Dean Miller. They lived and worked on a farm in the Prairie Ridge community east of Winfield for over 15 years. They moved to their farm on Route 4 in 1945. Mr. Miller died in 1956.

Mrs. Miller had resided in nursing facilities since the early 1980s.

She formerly attended Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Gary Miller, Winfield; a daughter, Virginia Kruger, Fremont, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Wefers, Winfield; several grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Roy Porter

Roy Lee Porter, 46, of Winfield, died Oct. 5, 1997, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Porter was born in Stillwater, Okla., in 1951 and in 1963 moved to Winfield.

Survivors include his mother, Charlesetta Greer, Wichita; 11 brothers, James Porter, Oklahoma, Charles Porter and Val Porter, both of Arkansas, and Chris Porter, Leroy Porter, Calvin Porter, George Porter, Grant Porter, Edward Porter, Herbert Porter and David Porter, all of Wichita; and five sisters, Rosemary Porter, Carolyn Porter, Molly Porter, Ruby Porter and Leona Horton, all of Wichita.

Orval Payne

Services for Orval L. Payne, 98, who died Oct. 3, 1997, were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Donnie Davis officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.

Special vocal music was "Amazing Grace," performed by June Palmer.

Casket bearers were Marshall Brentlinger, Darrell Burdette, Lowell French, Francis Groene and George Guy Liermann.

A memorial has been established with First Baptist Church.

Edith Conner

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Edith M. Conner, 77, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 8, 1997, at Parkside Meadows nursing home in St. Charles.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel with interment in Union Cemetery. The Rev. Lestel Hollingsworth will officiate.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with a multiple sclerosis group. Contribution can be made at the funeral home.

Conner was born Jan. 27, 1920, in Wellington to Bert and Bertha (Randall) Hollingsworth. She later moved to Winfield and worked as an electrocardiogram technician at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

In 1972 she married Karl Conner. He preceded her in death.

Conner was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield.

Survivors include two sons, Nolan Grade, St. Peters, Mo., and Merlin Grade, Trujillo, Honduras; three grandchildren, including Denise Crittenden of Winfield; and two great-grandchildren.

Peggy J. Gray

Peggy J. Gray, 60, of 1402 North in Winfield, died Oct. 9, 1997, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service with the Rev. Gerald Graber officiating. Interment will be in Wilmot Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today and before services Saturday.

Memorials have been established with Central Baptist Church and Home Health Care at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Gray was born May 20, 1937, at Wilmot to Leo J. and Thelma (Floyd) Eastman. The family lived in Oklahoma before moving to Winfield when she was in third grade. She attended Bryant Elementary School and graduated from Winfield High School in 1955.

On July 30, 1955, she married Roger "Gene" Gray in Winfield, and they resided in Winfield throughout their marriage.

Gray was employed by Graves Drug Store and Oklahoma Tire and Supply Co. during the 1960s and '70s. She worked for the USD 465 food service from 1978 until retiring in 1994.

Her husband preceded her in death April 15, 1997.

Gray attended Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Stiffler and Donna Parsons, her parents, Leo and Thelma Eastman, a sister, Patricia Smith, and three brothers, Jack, Ronald and Donald Eastman, all of Winfield; and five grandchildren.

Helen A. Hopper

Helen A. Hopper, 85, a longtime Grenola resident, died Oct. 9, 1997, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield until 9 p.m. today.

A memorial has been established with the Parkinsons Disease Foundation.

Hopper was born Feb. 19, 1912, in Winfield to Mr. and Mrs. Arch Miller. She was raised in the Grenola community and graduated from Grenola High School in 1930.

She was employed in domestic work as a young woman.

On June 1, 1933, she married Joe A. Hopper in Wichita. They lived and farmed south of Grenola throughout their marriage. Her husband died Nov. 9, 1985.

Hopper resided with her son David and his family in Winfield for seven years before moving to Walnut Hill Nursing Center in May.

She was a member of the Grenola United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Carlton Hopper, Burden, Richard Hopper, Oxford, and David Hopper, Winfield; a brother, Richard Miller, Grenola; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Lucille Vick

Mary Lucille Vick, 81, died Oct. 9, 1997 at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City.

A funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at the Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard. The Rev. Chuck Evans will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the Howard First Baptist Church youth group. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.

Vick was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Elk County to John and Mary Ann Richards Wells. She attended Fairview District #4 school and Howard High School.

On Feb. 3, 1935, she married Roland M. Vick at her grandparent's home in Howard. The couple made their home on a farm where he was born. They moved to the Hanna farm in 1950. They eventually sold the farm and she assisted in the operation of Vick's Western Store in Howard.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Vick was a member of the First Baptist Church of Howard.

Survivors include sons Glen Vick of Arkansas City and Vernon Hughes of Coffeyville; brothers Cleland Wells of Howard, Wilbert Wells of Wichita and Virgil Wells of Boring, Ore.; sisters Dorothy Coleman of Marion, Helen Hastings of Wichita, Neva Jean Linden of Wichita and Shirley Blake of Dodge City; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
