Calvin Woods

OXFORD - Calvin E. Woods, 61, of Oxford, died Oct. 11, 1997, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Belle Plaine.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Mennonite Housing Rehabilitation Services. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Woods was born Dec. 12, 1935, in Winfield, to Thoburn E. and Mildred E. (Leland) Woods. He was raised and educated in Oxford and later received an associate's degree in construction technology at Cowley County Community College.

On Nov. 12, 1966, he married Joycelyn Chapman in Tulsa, Okla. Throughout their marriage, they resided in Oxford. Woods farmed and owned and operated Woods Construction for over 10 years. He had been a head carpenter for Mennonite Housing Rehabilitation Services since 1994.

A member of Maple Street Baptist Church in Oxford, he served as an ordained deacon and in various other positions in the church. He was also affiliated with FFA and Vocational Industrial Clubs of America at Cowley County Community College.

He and his wife had operated Fishhook Recreational Park south of Udall for over 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Joycelyn Woods, Oxford; three daughters, Denise Woods and Rebecca Wayman, both of Wichita, and Angela Moore, Winfield; his father, Thoburn E. Woods, Winfield; a sister, Patricia Anderson, Nashville, Tenn.; and two grandsons.

Norma Snook

Services for Norma Lee Snook, 70, who died Oct. 6, 1997, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 10 at the First Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Ken Davidson officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Organist was Nedra Musgrove, and pianist was Bwana Drennan.

Special vocal music selections were "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," "I'll Meet You in the Morning" and "There Is Room at the Cross," performed by Bwana Drennan, Nedra Musgrove and David Musgrove.

Honorary casket bearers were Freda and Phyllis Hotchkin, Michelle Proctor, Kim, Shelly and Sheryl Snook and Pamela Stonehocker.

Casket bearers were Darrel, Randy and Steve Hotchkin, Tony Proctor and Chris, Craig, Lynn and Nathan Snook.

A memorial has been established with First Assembly of God Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Edith Conner

Services for Edith M. Conner, 77, who died Oct. 8, 1997, were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 13 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Lestel Hollingsworth officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Jared and Dustin Crittenden. Casket bearers were Craig, Nolan and Merlin Grade and Butch, Mike and Greg Rausch.

A memorial has been established with the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Peggy Gray

Services for Peggy Jean Gray, 60, who died Oct. 9, 1997, were held at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Wilmot Cemetery.

Organist was Carolyn Eastman. Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang "Amazing Grace." Recorded music was "Go Rest High on That Mountain," sung by Vince Gill, and "Angels Among Us," sung by Alabama.

Honorary casket bearers were Mrs. Gray's grandchildren, Brian, Melissa and Scott Stiffler, Jill Parsons and Kerrie Parsons Bryant.

Casket bearers were her nephews, Chris and Greg Carr; Clint, Jack Jr., Rodney and Tim Eastman; Mike and Ronald Gray II; Robin Hickman; Jim Hoock; Bill Lemon; David Lowe; Greg McCaslin; Jim Miller and David Smith.

Memorials have been established with Central Baptist Church and Home Health Care at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Helen Hopper

GRENOLA - Services for Helen A. Hopper, 85, who died Oct. 9, 1997, were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 11 in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola. The Rev. Gerald Manley officiated.

Special vocal music was "Amazing Grace."

A memorial has been established with the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Rocky Roark
S.L. "Rocky" Roark, 71, of 1720 E. 12th, Winfield, died Oct. 13, 1997, from injuries received in an oilfield accident near Cambridge.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials have been established with Cowley County Safe Homes and Cambridge Baptist Church. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Roark was born near Manitou, Okla., to S.J. and Nola M. (Adams) Roark. Raised and educated in the Manitou area, he began trucking at age 14, transporting sugar beets from fields in Texas.

In 1950 the Roark family moved to Kansas where he began his oilfield career. He was employed as a pusher for the Burnsworth Drilling Co., and in 1958 he and his father began R&R Tank Service in Winfield. Following the sale of their business in 1962, Roark worked in contract oilfield pumping. He had been self-employed buying and operating oil leases in the Cowley County area since 1963.

On March 14, 1977, he married Nancy S. Bender in Miami, Okla. They resided in Winfield throughout their marriage. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and was affiliated with the Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Roark, Winfield; a son, Mickey Roark, Wichita; a daughter, Lanye Bates, Cedar Vale; a stepson, Mike Baldwin, Savoy, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Angela Bender and Pam Bender, both of Winfield; a sister, Dana Armentrout, Oklahoma City; and seven grandchildren.

Calvin Woods
Services for Calvin Earl Woods, 61, who died Oct. 11, 1997, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 14 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. J. Neal Alford officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Organist was Jim Adams. Thomas Wayman sang "Living for Jesus." The congregation sang "Because He Lives" and "When the Morning Comes."

Honorary casket bearers were Steve Espinoza, Mike Herzberg, Charles Ingram, Ernest Jefferson, Mark Martin, Art Prosser, Ruthie Prosser and Steve Schmanke.

Casket bearers were Gary Carson, Lou Confessori, Jerry Dodson, Victor Hiebert, Sam Hines and Skip Turner.

A memorial has been established with Mennonite Housing Rehabilitation Services.

Chet Andes
Chet Andes, 89, of Route 5, Winfield, died Oct. 13, 1997, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Tisdale Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials have been established with the Tisdale United Methodist Church, American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Andes was born Feb. 5, 1908, in the Rainbow Bend community west of Winfield to Willis and Elizabeth (Bonewell) Andes. He received his early education in Cowley County rural schools. When he was 12, the family moved to a farm in the Rose Valley community east of Winfield, where he attended Rose Valley rural school. He began farming and ranching as a youth.

On April 23, 1930, he married Myrtle Miller. They resided on Route 5 throughout their marriage. She died Nov. 5, 1957.

On Oct. 25, 1964, he married Joan Hamon in Derby. The couple lived and worked on the family farm for nearly 33 years.

In 1936 Andes became one the the original members of the "Turtles," the original professional cowboys association which became the Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1945. A renowned calf roper, he rodeoed in Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska from the 1930s to the 1960s, winning many competitions. He was also well known to rodeo fans for his spotted horse, Dodger.

A lifelong Cowley County resident, he was involved in many Tisdale community activities.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Andes, and three sons, Willis Andes, Donnie Andes and Tommy Andes, all of Winfield; a daughter, Vickie Metzinger, Dexter; a stepson, David Triplett, Wichita; a stepdaughter, Belinda Turner, Winfield; two sisters, Louise Avery, Winfield, and Virginia Lauppe, Wichita; 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Hilda Ore
BURDEN - Hilda M. Ore, 92, longtime Burden resident, died Oct. 14, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Wheeler Funeral Home Chapel in Burden. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield.

Ore was born Nov. 24, 1904, in Humboldt, to John and Anna (Fischer) Werling. She graduated from Winfield High School and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College, later finishing her formal education at Southwestern College.

She taught elementary school for 25 years in Herington, Winfield, Old Salem, Oak Lawn, Burden and Cambridge schools.

On May 29, 1931, she married John Raymond "Ray" Ore in Lindsborg. They lived most of their married lives on a farm near Burden. He died Jan. 9, 1996.

Ore was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons, John Ore, Huntsville, Texas, and Charles Ore, Seward, Neb.; two sisters, Erna Wilson, Hays, and Bernice Krumm, Cheyenne, Wyo.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Margaret Armstrong
WICHITA - Margaret K. Armstrong, 91, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 15, 1997, at the Kansas Masonic Home in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Frye will officiate. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Masonic Home.

Armstrong was born in Winfield Aug. 31, 1906, to Thomas and Effie (Rice) Cairns. She graduated from Winfield High School.

On Dec. 12, 1924, she married Edward Armstrong in Howard. He died Dec. 3, 1960.

Armstrong worked at Beech Aircraft during World War II and later worked for 10 years for Finney Air Conditioning in Winfield.

She was the last surviving charter member of the Winfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a member of Calvary Chapel in Arkansas City.

Armstrong had lived at the Kansas Masonic Home for the past five years.

Survivors include a grandson, James Hicks, Jenkins, Mo., a granddaughter Warrena Martin, Hutchinson; three stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
