Julian Cornejo

SHATTUCK, Okla. - Julian Martin Cornejo, 74, of Shattuck, Okla., formerly of Wellington, died April 4, 1998, at Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck, Okla.

The Rosary will be said tonight at 7 and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, both at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Wellington. The Rev. Andrew J. Seiler will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Wellington.

Frank Funeral Home, Wellington, has charge of arrangements.

Cornejo was born July 23, 1923, in Wellington, to Julian and Nacasio (Martin) Cornejo.

On Sept. 7, 1941, he married Mercedes Ybarra in Wellington.

Retired in 1983 after 42 years of service, he was a former road master for the Santa Fe Railroad.

Survivors include his wife, Mercedes Cornejo, Shattuck; five sons, Alfonso Ybarra, Wichita, Robert Cornejo, Newton, Gabriel Cornejo, Harmon, Okla., Marcello Cornejo, Woodward, Okla., and Julian Cornejo, California; five daughters, Rose Miller, Wellington, Rosalee Bueno, Spearman, Texas, Sara Carillo, Winfield, Marcellina Shaw, Shattuck, Okla., and Sonja Weiss, Sunnyvale, Calif.; two brothers, Tony Cornejo, Wellington, and Dario Cornejo, Wichita; a sister, Endina Olivas, South Haven; 38 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

A son, Stephen Cornejo, preceded him in death.

Kathryn Mason Hodges

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Kathryn Hodges, 41, of San Antonio, former member of the piano faculty of the University of Texas-San Antonio, died April 1, 1998, at her home in San Antonio.

Funeral arrangements will be announced.

Hodges was the daughter of Phillip and Coral Lee Mason of Albion, Mich.

In addition to her work at the University of Texas, she had also been the accompanist for the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra Chorus and for 13 years had served on the piano staff of the Interlochen Camp of the Arts in Michigan.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Hodges, San Antonio, formerly of Winfield; a stepson, Brian Hodges, Rochester, N.Y.; her parents, Phillip and Coral Lee Mason, Albion, Mich.; three sisters and their families; two grandmothers, and her in-laws, Albert and Winifred Hodges, Winfield.

Sarah Sympson

Memorial services for Sarah Jo Sympson, 78, who died April 3, 1998, were held at 11 a.m. April 6, 1998, at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett officiated. Private inurnment services will be held at a later date at Tisdale Cemetery.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang "It Is Well with My Soul." The congregation sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace."

Honorary casket bearers were Max Burgoyne, Marvin Ewertt, Bob Hamm, James Lee King, Don Roberts and Melvin Ruggles.

A memorial has been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.

Kathryn Hodges

Bill Watt

Thomas W. "Bill" Watt, 75, of Route 1, Winfield, died April 6, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Akron Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with Grandview United Methodist Church and Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Watt was born Feb. 8, 1923, on a farm nine miles north of Winfield, to Ira James and Rosa A. (King) Watt. He received his early education in Prairie Grove rural school and graduated from Winfield High School in 1941.

Watt was then employed by Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving for three years as an airman first class radio operator and turret gunner. He served aboard a torpedo plane on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and later on the USS Franklin, which was bombed by the Japanese. He survived the attack and was rescued after being in the sea for two hours.

In 1945 Watt moved to Eugene, Ore., where he worked in auto body and fender repairs for several years.

In 1945 he married Yvonne Schrader, and they moved to a farm near Winfield in 1951. She died in 1970.

Watt worked in the body shop at Scholfield Brothers Pontiac dealership in Wichita where he remained until his retirement in 1981.

On Jan. 28, 1984, he married Lois Ann Hitchcock, and they lived in Andover before moving to their home north of Winfield.

Watt was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Ann Watt, Winfield; a son, Thomas Dean Watt, Warrensburg, Mo.; two daughters, Linda Miller, Hillsboro, Ore., and Cynthia Kratzer, Canby, Ore.; two stepsons, Ricke Dean Hitchcock and Nick Hitchcock, both of Kiowa; a stepdaughter, Vickie Clepper, Cherokee, Okla.; two brothers, Clyde Watt and John Watt, both of Winfield; a sister, Edna DeWitt, Winfield; four grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Vernin Stiles

GRENOLA - Vernin L. Stiles, 74, a longtime Grenola resident, died April 5, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Green Lawn Cemetery at Grenola. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday and until noon Thursday.

Stiles was born July 5, 1923, on a farm near Grenola, to John and Roxy Stiles. Raised and educated in the Grenola community, he was employed as a laborer in many localities across the country.

On March 17, 1943, he married Anna Maxine Evanson in El Dorado. They later divorced.

Stiles resided in Wichita and California before moving to Grenola during the 1960s.

On April 12, 1967, he married Lavern Tucker in Sedan, and they resided in Grenola throughout their marriage. She died Aug. 3, 1987.

Survivors include a son, John Stiles, Fulton, Mo.; a daughter, Verna Lou Benjamin, Canyon Country, Calif.; a stepson Larry Ollenborger, Winfield; three stepdaughters, Doretta Hopper and Joyce Clayton, both of Winfield, and Mary McCoy, Westminster, Colo.; a sister, Vera Pajares, Wichita; and several grandchildren and stepgrandchildren.

A stepson, James Ollenborger, preceded him in death.

Loel Moore

ARKANSAS CITY - Loel Franklin Moore, 80, formerly of Route 2, Burden, and Winfield, died April 6, 1998, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with American Legion Post 10 in Winfield. Contributions can be made through the post or funeral home.

Moore was born Jan. 15, 1918, on a farm east of Grenola, to Allen and Katherine (Kyser) Moore. Raised in the Grenola area, he attended Independence rural school near Grenola and began farming as a youth with his parents. The Moore family moved to a farm near Burden in the early 1930s.

A veteran of World War II, Moore served with the U.S. Army 35th Armored Division as a rifleman.

On Dec. 16, 1942, he married Alice Anna Rush in Orange, Calif. Due to wounds received in France, he received a discharge from the service, and the Moores returned to Burden.

Totally disabled because of his war injuries, he resided in Winfield from 1948 until moving to the Eaton community south of Burden in 1954. He had resided in Winfield and Wichita prior to moving to Medicalodge in Arkansas City in 1996.

A member of the Tisdale United Methodist Church, he was affiliated with Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4 in Wichita and American Legion Post 10.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Moore, Winfield; a son, William Allen Moore, Geuda Springs; a daughter, Mary Jane Hopper, Phoenix; a sister, Ruby Bohannon, Cedar Vale; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Alice Logsdon

CAMBRIDGE - Services for Alice E. Logsdon were held at 2 p.m. April 6, 1998, in Cambridge Baptist Church. The Rev. Raymond Hiltzman officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola.

Barbara Stephens was pianist, and Terry Stephens sang "Never Alone" and "One Day at a Time."

Honorary casket bearers were Terry Stephens, Curtis Bing, Walter Tredway, Allen Miller, Terry Alford and Lance Shepard.

Casket bearers were Bill Stephens, Nathan and Robbie Alford, John Miller and Kenny and Justin Bates.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Burden was in charge of arrangements.
