Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys

Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys, 93, internationally known artist and teacher, of Winfield, died May 14, 1998, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the garden at the family home, 1302 E. 12th. The Rev. Fran Broadhurst will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Everyone who knew Covacevich-Boys and her work is welcome to attend the service.

Friends may also call at the family home from 6 to 8:30 tonight.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys Visual Arts Scholarship through the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council and the Mobile Van Fund at Cumbernauld Village.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nona Keller

CEDAR VALE - Nona Pauline Keller, 95, of Cedar Vale Nursing Center, died May 17, 1998.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cedar Vale Cemetery. Dr. Stanley Upchurch will officiate. Lloyd Zimmerman will sing "How Great Thou Art."

Zimmerman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Keller was born May 1, 1903, on a farm near Cedar Vale to Gregory and Mary (Lafler) Hawkins. She attended school in the Cedar Vale community.

She married Faye Keller. A homemaker, Keller lived most of her life in Canon City, Colo. After the deaths of her husband and daughter Hellen in 1989, she returned to Kansas and lived with her sister, Elizabeth Metcalf, until 1992.

Keller was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Cedar Vale.

Survivors include a brother, Ralph Hawkins, Cedar Vale, and a sister, Elizabeth Metcalf, Grenola.

Darren Hoffman

PORTLAND, Ore. - Darren Lee Hoffman, 33, of Portland, formerly of Udall, died May 16, 1998, at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Udall Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service of Winfield is in charge of arrangements.

Hoffman was born Aug. 20, 1964, in Wichita, to Jerrold Hoffman and Sally Hurd Young. Raised and educated in Udall, he graduated from Udall High School in 1982.

He attended the University of Kansas and lived for a year as an exchange student in Germany. In 1987 he received a bachelor's degree in German literature.

Hoffman moved to Portland in 1988 and to Chicago in 1992. He was employed by International Finance and Housing in Chicago for several years until he returned to Portland in 1997.

Survivors include his parents, Jerrold Hoffman, Udall, and Sally Young, Garfield, Ark.; a brother, Randy Hoffman, Udall; two half-brothers, Kennton Hoffman, Udall, and Tyler Hoffman, Winfield; and two half-sisters, Rendi Hoffman, Udall, and Rachael Hoffman, Belle Plaine.

Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys

A celebration of the life of Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys, 93, who died May 14, 1998, was held at 2 p.m. May 19 at her home. The Rev. Fran Broadhurst officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Family members and former students read from "The Prophet" and from Covacevich-Boys' journals. Some individuals shared their remembrances of her.

Musicians Judith Conners and Ted Van Dyk performed "Amazing Grace," "Home on the Range," "Somewhere, My Love" and "Ted's Jazz," chosen by Covacevich-Boys.

Casket bearers were Ted Van Dyk, Rod Jones, Joe Toledo and Jerry Weist.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Sue Jean Covacevich-Boys Visual Arts Scholarship through the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council, 700 Gary, Winfield, KS 67156, and with the mobile van fund at Cumbernauld Village, 716 Tweed, Winfield, KS 67156.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Hilber

REDDING, Calif. - Frances Pennington Hilbert, 87, died March 8, 1998, in Redding. Interment was in Redding Memorial Park.

She was born Jan. 26, 1911, and married Forest Hilbert. They both graduated from Southwestern College in 1932. She was employed in the office of Leroy Allen, a dean at Southwestern.

Survivors include a son, John Hilbert, Porterville, Calif., and two grandchildren.

Karen Summers

Karen Summers, 62, of 1923 E. 13th, Winfield, died May 21, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and First United Methodist Church for youth activities.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Summers was born Dec. 16, 1935, in Winfield, to John F. and Sherlah (Jarvis) King. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1953 and from Oklahoma State University in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in secretarial administration.

On Aug. 25, 1956, she married Mack Summers in Winfield.

Summers lived in Winfield throughout her life and was active in many civic and social organizations, including Legacy Foundation, PEO, bridge clubs and Sorosis. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Winfield Public Library Board of Directors.

Survivors include her husband, Mack Summers, Winfield; a son, Craig Summers, Lenexa; a daughter, Sharon Pappas, Overland Park; her mother, Sherlah King, Winfield; a sister, Nancy Austin, Plantation, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Tom Bolack

FARMINGTON, N.M. - Tom Bolack, 80, of Farmington, who had served briefly as governor of New Mexico, died May 20, 1998, at San Juan Medical Center.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Farmington. Cremation will have taken place under direction of La Quey Funeral Home.

The family has requested contributions be made to the Hospitality House of San Juan Medical Foundation, P.O. Drawer 110, Farmington, NM 87499 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 5377, Phoenix, AZ 85012.

Bolack was involved in oil and gas ventures as well as many community, state and national endeavors. He had served as mayor of Farmington, as a state legislator, as lieutenant governor and a brief stint as governor of New Mexico in 1962.

His businesses ranged from his large petroleum operation to his one-time ownership of the Albuquerque Dukes baseball team. The 12,500-acre B-Square Ranch which he co-owned with his family, has become a model of conservation and efficient land management.

Bolack established a large wildlife museum that contains thousands of specimens from all over the world acquired through his own efforts.

He was featured in two limited edition books of the Safari International Club. One, titled "Trophy Rooms Around the World," has a color photograph of one of Bolack's big game rooms on the cover, along with a story titled "Trophy Rooms of Who's Who of International Big Game Hunters." In the other publication, he was pictured and listed with "Great Hunters."

A book about Bolack's life and times, which is being prepared by Heritage Publishers of Phoenix, is scheduled to be published in July 1999.

Bolack was in a near fatal pickup accident in 1974 and suffered a stroke in 1985, leaving him virtually wheelchair-bound. He continued to support local and national charities and to hunt and fish in Texas and foreign countries.

Bolack's wife, Alice, died in 1978.

Survivors include his son, Tommy, a daughter, Terry, a sister, Marciel Johnson, Burden, and several nieces and nephews.

Jeff Boling

ASHEBORO, N.C. - Jeff Boling, 52, of Asheboro, formerly of Winfield, died May 19, 1998, in Concord, N.C.

A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Boling was born Nov. 10, 1945, in Asheboro, to Dan Maxton and Mary (Staley) Boling. He was raised and educated in Apopka, Fla. In high school he was involved with athletics and was a member of the Winter Park Ski Team.

After graduating from high school in 1964, he served as an air traffic controller for the United States Air Force until 1973.

Boling received a business administration degree in 1978 from Columbia College, Columbia, Mo.

Boling lived in Winfield before moving to Asheboro in January.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel Boling and Jacob Boling, both of Winfield; two daughters, Melanie Boling Andreae, Winfield, and Mandi Boling Endicott, Killeen, Texas; his mother, Mary Boling, Apopka, Fla.; three sisters, Polly Boling Ryan, Branson, Mo., Sue Boling Roberson, Eustis, Fla., and Judith Boling McAnulty, Concord, N.C.; and one grandchild.

One Phengvongsa

One Phengvongsa, 67, homemaker, of 718 E. 13th, Winfield, formerly of Vientiane, Laos, died May 20, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus, Wichita.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. The Rev. Warren Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

Phengvongsa was born June 8, 1930, in Nahing, Laos, to Thao Thao and Ohm Phabmixay. In 1945 she married Thong Phengvongsa. He died March 16, 1994.

She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Chanh, Mark, Tia and Boun Phengvongsa, and a daughter, Bouthang Sphabmixay, all of Winfield; a brother and eight grandchildren.

Robert Hartley

Robert D. Hartley, 83, formerly of 21 Fleetwood Drive, Winfield, died May 22, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. A reception for friends and family will be held immediately following services in the fellowship suite of the church. Private family burial will be held in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Hartley was born Jan. 31, 1915, to Earl M. and Emma (Nickel) Hartley. The Nickel family had come to Winfield from Illinois in 1883, when Emma was seven, and her father and family operated a business in hides, furs and general salvage for many decades.

Robert's father, Earl Hartley, became a Winfield resident in 1896, moving from Oklahoma Territory. Earl Hartley worked at the Stafford-Wright Abstract Co. and served as manager of the A.S. Kininmonth Produce Co. before joining T.H. Harrod and Harold F. Warner in an investment firm in Winfield. That firm later became the Harrod-Hartley Investment Co., and later the Hartley Insurance Co.

Robert Hartley attended Winfield public schools and graduated from Winfield High School in 1932. He attended Southwestern College before joining his father in the Hartley Insurance Agency in 1936. During his college years, he toured much of the United States as part of the Omnibus Tours which originated in Winfield.

On Aug. 23, 1935, he married Ruth M. Geesling of Turon.

Following his father's death in 1955, he continued the family business as Bob Hartley Insurance, entering a new partnership with J.J. Banks as Hartley & Banks Insurance Agency in 1980. The agency is now known as Buterbaugh and Handlin.

The Hartleys resided in Winfield throughout their marriage of nearly 63 years. Robert Hartley was recognized at a celebration in January 1998 for his nearly 74 years of membership in First Presbyterian Church in Winfield where he served as deacon. He was an acknowledged expert throughout the area on railroad locomotives and the railroad business.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hartley, Winfield; a son, Robert E. Hartley, Redmond, Wash.; a daughter, Helen S. Hoofer, Wichita; a brother, Warren Hartley, Yakima, Wash.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
