Allene Ernst

Allene Gray Ernst, 89, of 716 Tweed, Winfield, died May 23, 1998, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerre Nolte officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 in Lyons Cemetery under the direction of Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Ernst was born Feb. 16, 1909, at Valley Center to Eric and Zoe (Slocum) Osen. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1926 and from Southwestern College in 1930. She then taught in the high school at Quincy.

In 1933 she married Arzy Gray, who preceded her in death in 1978. In July 1983 she married Clyde Ernst.

Ernst was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her husband, Clyde Ernst, Winfield; two sons, Dennis Gray, Highland, Ind., and Allen Gray, Eureka, Calif.; two daughters, Zoe Ann Gray, Nashotah, Wis., and Jean Wilcox, Eau Claire, Wis.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Darren Hoffman

UDALL - Memorial services for Darren Lee Hoffman, 33, who died May 16, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. May 23 in Udall Cemetery. The Rev. John Branson officiated.

Music included "They Can't Take That Away from Me," by Billie Holiday.

Honorary casket bearers were Keith Conant, Greg Dale, Ivan Dooley, Peter Fekkers, Kathy Reed-Zimmerman, Greg Reed, Mike Reed, Leo Schuman, Rebecca Steffen and Peter Wicklund.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Bertha Buss

TULSA, Okla. - Bertha Bloesser Buss, 87, formerly of Udall, died May 23, 1998, in Tulsa.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Belle Plaine Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Udall United Methodist Church.

Buss was born Sept. 2, 1910, in Kingman. She and her husband, the late Harold Buss, farmed in the Udall area for 37 years.

Survivors include a son, Don Buss, Tulsa; two daughters, Patricia Stewart, Jourdanton, Texas, and Bonnie Byler, Durango, Colo.; and three grandsons.

Fred Wells

HOWARD - Fred Wells, 75, longtime resident of Howard, died May 23, 1998, at Medicalodge in Eureka.

Sservices were held at 2 p.m. May 26 in Toronto Cemetery. The Rev. Robin Haines officiated, and Lloyd Zimmerman sang "The Old Rugged Cross."

A memorial has been established with Flint Hills Assembly of God in Howard. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Wells was born May 2, 1923, at South Irvine, Ky., to Solomon and Talitha (Lunsford) Wells. He was raised and educated in Kentucky and was employed on the family farm at an early age.

A Kentucky resident for most of his life, he moved to Howard in the late 1970s. He was employed as a sheet metal worker for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita until his retirement in 1985.

On March 25, 1989, he married Susan Ann (Drake) Engle in Howard. His previous two marriages had ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Wells, Howard; two sons, Larry Wells, Kentucky, and Freddie Wells, Ohio; two daughters, Sheila Stanger, Loveland, Ohio, and Carol Wells, Ohio; a stepson, Kevin McTague, Okmulgee, Okla.; three stepdaughters, Teresa Grooms and Melinda Tannahill, both of Eureka, and Michelle VanRoyen, Longton; three brothers, Vinson Wells, Hamilton, Ohio, Earl Wells, LaFallette, Tenn., and Arthur Wells, Cincinnati, Ohio; seven sisters, Sylvia McKinney, Lilly, Ky., Jewell Duke, Bradenton, Fla., and Goldie Tabler, the Rev. Bertha Miller, Lena Jennings, Vida Gregory and Virginia Young, all of Hamilton, Ohio; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sarah Wilson

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - Sarah Marie Wilson, 78, of Mount Vernon, former Winfield public schools art teacher, died May 21, 1998, after an extended illness.

There will be no services. Hawthorne Funeral Home and Memorial Park, Mount Vernon, was in charge of cremation arrangements.

Wilson was born April 19, 1920, in Arkansas City, to Alvin E. and Essie M. Hellyer. She attended area schools before marrying Woodrow Wilson on July 20, 1940, in Chanute.

They moved to Winfield in 1947, and she began teaching art in country schools in 1949 while attending Southwestern College part time. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Southwestern in 1953, graduating with honors and becoming a member of the Order of the Mound.

In 1954 she began teaching at the junior high school. She continued her education by attending the University of Colorado during summers and earned a master's degree in counseling. She continued post-graduate classes at various schools, including the University of Hawaii and the University of Washington.

In 1961 Wilson became head of the art department for Winfield public schools. She worked to advance the Kansas Scholastic Art Awards and in 1992 was named by the Kansas Scholastic Art Awards Association to its hall of fame.

When Winfield High School on Viking Boulevard was being designed, she assisted with the design of the art room. When she retired in 1985, the room was dedicated to her.

Wilson was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star and a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church.

In 1991 she moved to Sun City, Ariz. She moved to Mount Vernon in 1997 to be close to her daughter.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Shelby Pappan, Mount Vernon; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, Latisha Anne Marie Pappan, Winfield.

Homer Wilkinson

SEDAN - Homer F. Wilkinson, 86, of Sedan, died May 26, 1998.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Ozro Falls Cemetery, south of Cedar Vale near Hewins.

Wheeler Funeral Home, Cedar Vale, will announce arrangements.

Robert Hartley

Services for Robert D. Hartley, 83, who died May 22, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. May 26 at the First Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Steven Souther and William Soule officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Carolyn Hennessy read from Scripture. Dr. James Schuppener sang "Hymn of Promise," and June Vasey was the organist.

Honorary casket bearers were J.J. Banks, Jim Buterbaugh, Bill Fiske, Benn, Don and Richard Gibson, Andrew Hartley, Bernard Hennessy, Grady and Matt Hoofer, Phil Jarvis and Larry Newell.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Services for Allene Gray Ernst, 89, who died May 23, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. May 27 at Grace United Methodist Church. The Revs. Jerre Nolte and Ticia Bennett officiated. Burial was at 3 p.m. in Lyons Community Cemetery.

Louise Schuppener was the organist, Dr. James Schuppener was the soloist and Laura Schuppener was the violinist. Music included "Hymn of Promise," "Eagles Wings," "Amazing Grace," "Rock of Ages" and "Joyful, Joyful."

Jean Wilcox, Zoe Ann Gray and Dennis Gray took part in the family sharing.

Casket bearers were Roy and Dan Wilcox, Rick and Dave Truesdell, Jim Fuller and Dennis Gray.

Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church and Lyons United Methodist Church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Omer Wilkinson

SEDAN - Omer Francis Wilkinson, 86, of Sedan, died May 28, 1998, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Ozro Cemetery near Cedar Vale. Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale is in charge of arrangements.

Wilkinson was born Oct. 6, 1911, to Clyde and Katherine (Healy) Wilkinson in Cummings, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Redford, Iowa. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

On May 5, 1934, he married Josephine Patty in Linden, Iowa.

A longtime Wichita resident, Wilkinson worked for Bond Bakery and Dillards retail clothing store as a truck driver.

He was a member of the Sedan Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Wilkinson, Sedan; a son, Maurice Wilkinson, Parker, Colo.; a daughter, Mary Jo Fairless, Tulsa, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

Clara Metzler

OXFORD - Clara Florence Metzler, 79, of Oxford, died May 27, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Curtis Fike will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from noon to 8 p.m.

Metzler was born July 2, 1918. She graduated from Longdale (Okla.) High School.

On May 16, 1940, she married Harvey Metzler in Fairview, Okla. They moved from Oklahoma to the Neodesha area, later to Wichita and then to Oxford in 1974. Her husband died July 2, 1984.

Survivors include three nephews, Virgil and Gary Woolley, both of Enid, Okla., and Ray Woolley, Florence, Calif.; four great-nieces and a great-nephew.

Karen Summers

Services for Karen L. Summers, 62, who died May 21, 1998, were held at 3:30 p.m. May 23 in First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Musicians were Louise, James and Laura Schuppener.

Casket bearers were Worrall Clift, Chris Jarvis, Ron Broadhurst, Phil Jarvis, Warren Andreas, Marshall Detter, Brett Austin and Gregg Austin.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the youth program at First United Methodist Church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
