Donna Darnall

ARKANSAS CITY - Donna S. Darnall, 67, of Arkansas City, died June 2, 1998, at her home.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday in Parker Cemetery. Jesse Kindred will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions can be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Darnall was born Aug. 14, 1930, in Maple City to Arthur and Amy O. (Davis) Anderson. She was educated in Maple City and Arkansas City.

On Feb. 15, 1949, she married Merton Darnall in Wellington. They lived in Arkansas City.

Darnall worked as a mental health technician at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 20 years before retiring.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Selbe, Wichita, and Allan Darnall, Arkansas City, a daughter, Sherry Darnall, El Dorado; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

H.G. Shah

NAIROBI, Kenya - H.G. Shah, 89, died June 1, 1998, in Nairobi, Kenya. His service has already been held.

Shah was born in September 1909 in Nairobi and had a wholesale fabric business in that city.

Survivors include two sons, C.H. Shah, Nairobi, and V.H. Shah, London; three daughters, Jasu Shah, Independence, formerly of Winfield, Aruna Shah, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jayshree Shah, Huntington, W.Va.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bevin Russell

William Bevin Russell, 48, of 103 Iowa, Winfield, died June 3, 1998, at Riverside Health Systems in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with First Assembly of God Youth Activities, the Winfield Community Theatre and the Winfield Municipal Band.

Russell was born Jan. 19, 1950, in Winfield to Leonard and Junellia Russell. He grew up in a military family and lived in many places, including Hawaii and Germany. He graduated from Frankfurt American High School in Germany in 1968.

Russell attended Wichita State University and graduated from Belleville Area College in 1973 and from McKendree College in Lebanon, Ill., in 1975.

He served in the United States Army Band that was stationed in Central and South America.

Russell married Jo Jacks on Dec. 28, 1982, in Winfield, and they had resided here since their marriage.

He was employed by Commerce Bank in Winfield and Arkansas City as a loan originator.

Russell participated in Winfield Community Theatre and the Winfield Municipal Band and was a past president of the Cowley County Amateur Radio Club.

He had served as Royal Ranger leader, choir director and musician at the Assembly of God Church and had been a vocalist and trombonist for other churches and organizations.

Russell was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Promise Keepers.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Russell, two sons, Koby Andrew Russell and John Bevin Russell, and his mother, Junellia Phillips Russell, all of Winfield; and two brothers, Bruce Russell, Wichita, and Benet Russell, Winfield.

Angie Neubecker

Angie Bittinger Neubecker, 26, of Route 4, Winfield, died June 1, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Tisdale Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today and until service time on Friday.

A memorial has been established for the benefit of her children. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Neubecker was born Jan. 15, 1972, at Shelbyville, Ind., to Ray and Sandra (Rogian) Bittinger. She attended schools in Shelbyville and Winfield High School after moving here in 1984.

Neubecker had been employed by Fiesta Grande restaurant and American Legion Post 10.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 10 Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughters, Alyssa Neubecker and Heather Neubecker, her companion, Kerry Smith, her mother, Sandra Bittinger, her father, Ray Bittinger, and her brother, Nicholas Bittinger, all of Winfield; her sisters, Kim Littrell, Gina Small and Crystal Packard, all of Winfield, Rhonda Stevenson, Cedar Vale, and Jenny Bittinger, Wellington; and her great-grandmother, Mildred Bittinger, Liberty, Ind.

Ruth Hartley

Ruth M. Hartley, 84, a resident of Winfield for more than 60 years, died June 3, 1998, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. A reception for friends and family will then be held in the church annex. A private burial will be in Highland Cemetery, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.

The Ruth Hartley Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established at Southwestern College. Contributions may be made at the church, college or funeral home.

Hartley was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Turon, to Alva Baker and Lucy (Thompson) Geesling. She was reared and educated in Turon and worked at the family's telephone company.

In 1935 she graduated from Southwestern College with a degree in education. After teaching school for a year in Leoti, she returned to Winfield.

On Aug. 23, 1935, she married Robert D. Hartley. He died May 22, 1998.

Hartley was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 60 years and had served as a ruling elder. She was also involved in development of the church nursery.

Hartley was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 52 years, first in Chapter FD and later Chapter HK. In 1996, she was honored by the Kansas P.E.O. for 50 years' service.

A longtime member of the Winfield Sorosis Club and the Worthwhile Club, she also served as a pink lady for the William Newton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include her son, Robert E. Hartley, Seattle; her daughter, Helen S. Hoofer, Wichita; her sister, Helen Newell, Fort Worth, Texas; her stepmother, Ilda Geesling, Turon; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Kenneth McDade

DODGE CITY - Marlin "Kenneth" McDade, 70, formerly of Dodge City, died June 1, 1998 at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron.

Services will be held later. Cremation has taken place. Burkhart Funeral Chapel of Dodge City was in charge of arrangements.

McDade was born May 10, 1928, in Moline to Carolina Franklin and Margaret (Foust) McDade. He served in the United States Army.

McDade was a retired construction worker who moved from Dodge City to Cimarron in March.

He is survived by one son, Gary McDade, Billings, Okla.; three daughters, Rachel McDade, Amber McDade and Sherry McDade, all of Dodge City; and one sister, Irene Shaff, Winfield.

Robert Berry

Services for Robert K. Berry, who died May 30, 1998, were held June 3 at Miles Funeral Service. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

David Farber told family memories.

"Go Rest High on That Mountain" was performed by Brian Clark, and "Crazy," "Sweet Dreams" and "My Buddy" were performed by Anna Roberts. Keith Anglemyer was the organist.

Casket bearers were Brad Berry, David, Kirk and Scott Farber, Chris Miller and Darrin, Ron and Steve Zimmerman.

Military rites were conducted by American Legion Post. 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544.

Dale Burger

MOLINE - Dale Francis Burger, 63, of Moline, died June 2, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Father Edward J. Steinberger will officiate. Masonic rites will be conducted by Hope Lodge 155 AF&AM in Moline Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Moline Public Library.

Burger was born Sept. 1, 1934, at Herkimer to Francis and Esther Burger. He moved to Wichita when he was seven years old and later graduated from Wichita North High School.

He served in the United States Army in the early 1950s and was stationed in France for several months.

Burger was employed as an engine installer by Cessna Aircraft Co. in Wichita until his retirement.

He married June (Seldorsen) Peck on Oct. 26, 1991, in Wichita. They lived in Wichita until moving to Moline in 1993.

Survivors include his wife, June; his stepsons, Jerauld Peck, Las Vegas, and Andrew Peck, Iola; his stepdaughters, Jeanne Garlach, Laurel Walker, Ruth Peck and Mary Porteous, all of Wichita, Kathleen Rush, Leawood, Nancy Ford, Iola, Helen Humphress, Haysville, and Carol Stuck, Rapid City, S.D.; a brother, Dan Burger, Nemo, Mo.; a sister, Twila Radunz, St. Peters, Mo.; and 20 grandchildren.

Larry French

Lawrence Deo "Larry" French, 80, of Winfield, died June 3, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

The family will have a wake at 3 p.m. Saturday at his wife's house, 1902 Simpson, with interment in Comstock, Mich. Cremation has taken place. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

French was born Dec. 31, 1917, to Bert and Marion (Jarman) French in Cooper Township, Mich. He was raised and educated in Richland, Mich., and served in the National Guard as a pilot in World War II.

French retired in 1973 after working for Kellogg Cereal Co. in Battle Creek, Mich., for more than 30 years.

On April 19, 1940, he married Betty Jane Bunting in Comstock, Mich., where they lived until her death in 1984.

He married Violet (Malloy) Hess on April 6, 1986, in Albuquerque, N.M. They lived in Traverse City, Mich., and spent their winters in Lake Havasu, Ariz., until they moved there in 1990. They moved to Winfield in 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Violet, Winfield; two sons, Jack French and Ron French, Augusta, Mich.; two daughters, Carol Berndt, Eidson, Tenn., and Wendy McCraken, Otsego, Mich.; one stepson; Richard Hess, Wichita; two stepdaughters, Francene Brooke, Lamar, Colo., and Cindy Scarth,Winfield; two brothers, Bud French, Jones, Mich., and Bob French, East Leroy, Mich; nine grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A son, Lawrence French Jr., preceded him in death.
