Ray Tesh

COFFEYVILLE - Ray F. Tesh, 76, of Coffeyville, died June 2, 1998, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Ford-Wulf-Bruns Edgewood Chapel, Coffeyville, with burial in Mount Washington Cemetery, Lenapah, Okla. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1022 will conduct military rites.

A memorial has been established with the VFW Post 1022 Scholarship Fund.

Tesh was born Nov. 19, 1921, near Perry, Okla., to Rufus Silas and Anna Beata (Hamilton) Tesh. The family moved to Coffeyville when he was a baby, and he graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School in 1940.

Tesh was employed by Mathis Grocery and Ludowici Celadon Roof and Tile, both of Coffeyville, and Consolidated Vultee Aircraft in San Diego.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps' 819th Bombardment Squadron in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II.

Tesh then worked for Sturm Fixture Co. for 22 years before working for Funk Manufacturing as a leadman and foreman. He retired in 1986.

On April 18, 1944, he married Letha Delores "Doe" Capps in Coffeyville. She died Nov. 28, 1978.

On May 22, 1980, he married Twyla "Mona" Welch in Tulsa, Okla. They later divorced.

Tesh attended the First United Methodist Church and was a member of American Legion Post 20. He was a past commander of VFW Post 1022, past state commander of the Military Order of Cooties and had held various other positions in district, state and national VFW groups.

Survivors include three sons, Freddy Tesh, Tulsa, William Tesh, Dearing, and Clarence "Butch" Fisher, Rawlins, Wyo.; a daughter, Carolyn Flowers, Udall; two brothers, James and George Tesh, both of Coffeyville; two sisters, Dorothy Hodson, Arlington, Texas, and Ruth Snider, Grove, Okla.; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Thelma Asper

Services for Thelma M. Asper were held at 10:30 a.m. June 4, 1998, at Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Roger Guy and Ron Keith officiated, and music by the Statler Brothers was played.

Honorary casket bearers were Brett and Troy Brown, Marty and Lincoln Kerr and Doug Sisson.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Chester Sprowls

ARKANSAS CITY - Chester Sprowls, 72, died June 4, 1998, at his home in Arkansas City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home with burial in Riverview Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Sprowls was born Nov. 11, 1925, at Cushing, Okla., to Alic C. and Ada (Lang) Sprowls. The family moved to Arkansas City when he was five. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1944 and later attended Cowley County Community College.

On Nov. 7, 1948, he married Ernestine Hughes in Arkansas City. She preceded him in death Aug. 13, 1993.

Sprowls was a car inspector for Santa Fe Railway for 44 years before retiring in 1989.

He attended Redeemer Lutheran Church and was a past master of Crescent Lodge 133 AF&AM.

Survivors include two sons, Stephen B. Sprowls, Arkansas City, and David A. Sprowls, Stillwater, Okla.; a daughter, Susan C. Reeves, Arkansas City; a brother, Henry Sprowls, Marion; a sister, Gladys Miller, Humansville, Mo.; and three grandchildren.

A son, Gary Alan Sprowls, preceded him in death.

Hoyt Piper

ARKANSAS CITY - Elvin "Hoyt" Piper, 100, of Arkansas City, died June 4, 1998, at Presbyterian Manor.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Central Christian Church with the Rev. Steve R. Chambers officiating. The family will greet friends at the church after the service. A private burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Central Christian Church. Contributions can be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Piper was born Aug. 25, 1897, at Harper, Ill., to Jacob Christian and Mary Grace (Bowman) Piper. The family moved to the Braman, Okla., area and then to LeRoy, Minn., where he graduated from high school. Piper graduated from Southwestern College in 1923 and was active in music and acting groups while a student there.

On Aug. 12, 1925, he married Martha Truesdell at Burden. She preceded him in death.

Piper taught at Burden High School from 1923-25, then taught mathematics at Arkansas City High School from 1925 until retiring in 1962. He was the Hi-Y sponsor and Arkansas City's Master Teacher in 1961.

Piper was a member of Central Christian Church, where he was the church's choir director for 40 years, an elder, a trustee and board chairman.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Baird, Arkansas City; a brother, Russell Piper, Harrisburg, Pa.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Charles Harp

CEDAR VALE - Charles Luther Harp, 93, of Cedar Vale, died June 1, 1998, at the Cedar Vale Nursing Center.

A private service will be held with Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale in charge.

Harp was born Nov. 15, 1904, in Cloverdale to Sheridan Harp and Ellen (Hull) Harp. He attended rural schools.

He married Wilma McClure, and she preceded him in death in 1978.

Harp had worked at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita.

He is survived by two sons, Lowell Harp, Cedar Vale, and Ronald Harp, Winfield; a daughter, Grace Wilkinson, Broken Arrow, Okla.; a sister, Della Harp, California; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Geneva Young, preceded him in death.

Christian Erik Knapp

DEXTER - Christian Erik Knapp, 4, of Route 2, Dexter, died June 4, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital, Winfield.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Cemetery, Winfield. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Monday.

A memorial has been established in his name for Cowley County Safe Homes, Inc. Contributions can be made through Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Knapp was born October 28, 1993, at Winfield, the son of Monica M. McElhone and Sean E. Knapp.

Survivors include: his parents, Monica McElhone and Corbin Thompson, of Dexter, and Sean Knapp, of Winfield; a sister, Myranda Mason McElhone, of Winfield; gradparents: Bob and Mae Marie McElhone; Connie Siever Knapp; Lynn and Karen Thompson, and Linda and Layne Kenzy, all of Winfield; and Kerry Knapp, of Fairbanks, Alaska; two great-grandparents, C.H. Upton, of San Angelo, Texas, and Harold Thompson, of Winfield, and an aunt, Melinda McElhone, of Winfield.

Devin Michael Jones

Devin Michael Jones, 3 months, of 800 E. 12th, died June 3, 1998, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Swisher-Taylor and Morris Chapel, with Father Bill Fulton officiating. Interment will be at a later date.

He was born March 6, 1998, in Winfield, the son of William Michael and Deanna Cumberledge Jones. They survive.

Other survivors include: a brother, Kody Lee; a sister, Desira Nicole, both of the home; grandparents, William and Ruth Ward, of Winfield, and Roger and Mary Gail Cumberledge, of Wheeling, W.V.; and a great-grandmother, Louise Phillips, of Frederick, Md.

Esther McDade

Esther E. McDade, 72, of 1502 Pine, Winfield, died June 5, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today.

A memorial has been established in her name as an education trust fund for her grandson, Pariss McDade-Brown. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

McDade was born June 20, 1925 in Winfield to Ysidra Ortiz. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1943.

She then served with the U.S. Air Force Civil Service at Strother Field and later at Minot, N.D.

On April 20, 1946, she married James F. McDade, and they resided in Winfield throughout their married lives. He died Aug. 27, 1987.

McDade was employed as a secretary at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center during the early 1950s. She returned to work at the Winfield State Hospital in 1961 and retired as a licensed mental health technician in 1983.

McDade was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for more than 65 years.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandra McDade and Karen McDade, and a grandson, all of Winfield.

An infant son preceded her in death.

Angie Neubecker

Services for Angie Bittinger Neubecker, 26, of Winfield, who died June 1, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. June 5 at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Steven Janschek officiated. Burial was in Tisdale Cemetery.

Music selections were "Bridge Over Troubled Water," performed by Simon and Garfunkel; "Wonderful Tonight," by Eric Clapton; "Forever Young," by Rod Stewart; and "It's Your Love," by Tim McGraw.

Honorary casket bearers were Patrick Dauber, Mark Firebaugh, Jerry Klein, Heath Moore, George Parsons, Emmett Poole, Blake Porter and Tracy Pope.

Casket bearers were Virgil Barnes, Brett Finney, Mark Nelson, Brian Rau, Bobby Smith and Shawn Smith.

Ruth Hartley

Services for Ruth M. Hartley, 84, of Winfield, who died June 3, 1998, were held at 11 a.m. June 6 at the First Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Steven Souther and William Soule officiated, and Matt Hoofer read Scripture.

The organist was June Vasey, and Wilma Anglemyer sang "The King of Love, My Shepherd Is."

Honorary casket bearers were Bill and Vera Fiske, Benn, Richard and Don Gibson, Bernard and Carolyn Hennessy, Grady and Matt Hoofer, Lucille and Phil Jarvis, Larry Newell, Viola Schwantes, Andrew Hartley and Susie Light.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
