John Hood

DEXTER - John F. Hood, 81, formerly of Atlanta, died Aug. 2, 1998, at Grouse Valley Manor Nursing Home in Dexter.

There will be no service. Cremation has taken place. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Hood was born Sept. 2, 1917, in Herington, to Vernon and Ellen (Berigan) Hood. He graduated from Herington High School and attended Kansas Wesleyan College in Salina on a football scholarship.

In December 1942 he married Ina Bernhardt. He then entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After the war, he worked for the Rock Island Railroad as a switchman and yardman in Salina for 20 years.

Mrs. Hood died March 3, 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Hood, Wichita, and John Hood, address not known; a sister, Rose Beilond, Salina; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Tom Purvis

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. - Tom E. Purvis, 65, of Truth or Consequences, formerly of Burden, died July 31, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wheeler Funeral Home in Burden. The Rev. Art Hays will officiate. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Hospice of Truth or Consequences.

Purvis was born Jan. 18, 1933, in Louisburg, to Bruce and Pearl (Schmoller) Purvis. He was educated in Louisburg schools.

On Dec. 6, 1952, he married Joyce Wingert in Kansas City, Mo. They lived in Burden, and he worked for the city of Winfield and later in maintenance at St. John's College. He retired from St. John's as maintenance supervisor in 1984.

Purvis was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Truth or Consequences Elks Club.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Purvis, Truth or Consequences; a daughter, Loretta Cornejo, Lenexa; a brother, Frank Purvis, Warsaw, Mo.; and two sisters, Jeannette McCollum, Sacramento, Calif., and Marty Lentz, San Marcos, Calif.

Steven Dobson

Steven C. Dobson, 48, of Route 2, Winfield, died Aug. 2, 1998.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Revs. M.E. Jenkins and Donnie Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Dobson was born Sept. 29, 1949, in Winfield, to Donald and Winnifred (Rumney) Dobson. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1967 and completed the Emergency Mobile Intensive Care Training program through Southwestern College in 1978.

Dobson was a retired emergency medical technician for Sedgwick County and was working as a lab technician at Webster Engineering.

Survivors include his wife, Linda (Page) Dobson, two sons, Jeremy and Bryan Dobson, and a brother, Larry Dobson, all of Winfield; and three sisters, Cheryl Dobson, Winfield, Dona Dick, Anthony, and Marcia Wurtz, Broken Arrow, Okla.

Amy Hake

ARKANSAS CITY - Amy Lemert Hake, 96, retired teacher and homemaker, of Arkansas City, formerly of Schenectady, N.Y., and Cedar Vale, died July 18, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services were held at 10 a.m. July 22 at Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated, Evelyn Upchurch was organist and Mark Johnson was vocalist.. Burial was in Ozro Valley Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Presbyterian Manor, 1711 N. Fourth, Arkansas City, KS 67005.

Hake was born July 8, 1902, in Cedar Vale, to Arthur and Bertha (Stewart) Lemert. She graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1919 and from Kansas State University in 1923.

On Nov. 10, 1925, she married Robb Hake in Cedar Vale. He preceded her in death.

Hake was a teacher and homemaker and had lived for many years in Schenectady, N.Y. She was active in the American Association of University Women, P.E.O., Girl Scouts, the League of Women Voters, Kappa Delta, Mortar Board and Phi Alpha Mu.

Survivors include a son, Richard Hake, Arkansas City; a sister, Mildred Lemert, Cedar Vale; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Floyd Goode

ARKANSAS CITY - Floyd William Goode, 84, of Arkansas City, former longtime Cedar Vale businessman and farmer, died Aug. 4, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Round Mound Cemetery at Cedar Vale. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with the Cedar Vale Volunteer Fire Department. Contributions can be made through the Chisholm Trail State Bank in Cedar Vale or the funeral home.

Goode was born Sept. 18, 1913, near Lowe in Chautauqua County, to William Henry and Bessie Coral (Smith) Goode. Both the Smith and Goode families were homesteaders in Chautauqua County during the early 1800s.

On Aug. 18, 1936, he married Marjorie Oma Ward in Wauneta. They made their first home in Sedan where he was employed as an auto mechanic by Wall Ford Agency. During World War II, the Goodes moved to Wichita where he was employed by Boeing Aircraft. They returned to Cedar Vale in 1946.

Goode was employed as a mechanic at Ames Garage in Cedar Vale and later owned and operated Floyd's Garage for many years. He began farming in 1972 and retired in 1992.

Goode served as Cedar Vale fire marshal for several years and was formerly a member of the board of directors of the Cedar Vale bank. He had served as president of the Round Mound Cemetery Board and on the Cedar Vale City Council.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Goode, Arkansas City; a son, Mike Goode, Blythe, Calif.; five daughters, Nancy Schmid, Cheyenne, Wyo., Jeanette Lyke, Buffalo, Billie Finley, Winfield, Sherry Lancaster, Lithonia, Ga., and Debbie Collingsworth, Oxford; three brothers, Carlie Goode, Moline, Claudie Goode, Independence, and Sammy Goode, Coffeyville; a sister, Nellie Call, Sedan; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Jean Haines

Services for P. Jean Haines, 72, who died Aug. 1, 1998, were held at 3 p.m. Aug. 5 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Mark Fry officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

The solo selection was "Amazing Grace."

Casket bearers were Doug Burns, Jeb Finchum, Mark Miller, Steve Lewis, Tony Webber and Lincoln Kerr.

A memorial has been established with Meals On Wheels.

Patsy Hall

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Patsy Ann Hall, 62, real estate agent, of Great Falls, formerly of South Haven, died July 31, 1998, in a Great Falls hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Aug. 4 at Croxford & Sons Funeral Home.

Hall was born Dec. 30, 1935, in South Haven, where she grew up and graduated from high school. She attended nursing school in Winfield.

In 1955 she married Kyron V. Hall in South Haven; they divorced in 1977.

Hall worked at Dale Stapp Fashions and Kaufman's and had been executive secretary for the Downtown Business Council and a receptionist for a law firm.

She had been active in real estate sales and opened an independent sales office, First Choice Properties, in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Neil Hall, Manteca, Calif., and Gregory Brent Hall, Helena, Mont.; a daughter, Stephanie Lynn Hughes, Berwyn, Pa.; her mother, Erna Barney, Tempe, Ariz.; five sisters, Betty Harris, Winfield, Sonja Fletcher, Tempe, Ariz., Judy Noel and Barbara De Clue, both of Apple Valley, Calif., and Cheryl Nixon, Corpus Christi, Texas; five grandchildren, and her companion, Cresap "Sandy" McCracken, Great Falls.

A daughter, Rochelle, died in 1961.

Fred McGlasson

SEILING, Okla. - John Freddrick McGlasson, 75, of Seiling, formerly of Moline, died Aug. 5, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital, Enid, Okla.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Lloyd G. Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church of Moline. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

McGlasson was born May 15, 1923, in Leads, Okla., to Harry and Mary Margretta (Casebolt) McGlasson. He attended Belknap and Star rural schools and graduated from Moline High School in 1942.

On April 5, 1943, he married Twila Marie Shanks in Sedan.

McGlasson was employed in building construction and as a truck driver for many years but worked most of his life in the oil fields. He contrated as an oil well pumper and was employed in general oil field work.

McGlasson had lived in Burden, Winfield and Arkansas City as well as various Oklahoma locations, including Blackwell, Nelogany and Putnam. In 1973 he and his wife moved to Seiling.

He was a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Marie McGlasson, Seiling; two sons, Bill McGlasson and Allen McGlasson, both of Oklahoma City; two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Louise Rohrer

WICHITA - N. Louise Rohrer, 79, homemaker, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 6, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Rohrer was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Quay, Okla. She was adopted by Guy G. and Esther (Willis) Keller in January 1920. She was raised in the Winfield area and graduated from Winfield High School.

On Nov. 6, 1938, she married Bill D. Rohrer in Webb City, Mo. They moved to Wichita in 1964. He died Sept. 26, 1978.

Survivors include three sons, Norman Rohrer and Pat Rohrer, both of Wichita, and Michael Rohrer, Olathe; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
