David Alberding

David C. Alberding, 59, of Route 3, Winfield, died Aug. 11, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery south of Winfield.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday.

Memorials have been established with the Respiratory Services Department of William Newton Memorial Hospital and with Pulmonary Medical Association, Crow-Tretbar. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Alberding was born June 26, 1939, in Winfield, to Lewis D. and Syrelda (Maricle) Alberding. He was raised and educated in Winfield.

In January 1962 he entered the United States Army and served through 1967 with the 61st Infantry of the Fifth Infantry Division.

On December 27, 1966, he married Marilyn K. Birdzell in Winfield. They resided on Route 3 during most of their marriage.

Alberding was employed by Finney Sheet Metal in Winfield during the late 1960s. He later worked as an equipment operator for the city of Arkansas City. He began employment at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in 1975 and retired in 1993.

Alberding was a member of Hackney Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Alberding, two sons, Lewis Alberding and Alan Alberding, a sister, Rita Shoemaker, and two grandchildren, all of Winfield.

Timothy Ehmke

Timothy Alvin Ehmke, 58, of 301 W. Ninth, Winfield, died Aug. 12, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Pastor Chuck Breckenridge will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Praise Worship Center, 2718 E. Central, Wichita, KS 67214.

Ehmke was born Dec. 21, 1939, in Chicago and grew up in Hermosa Beach, Calif. He attended St. James Elementary School and St. John's Seminary and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas Divinity School in Denver. In 1962 he was ordained a priest.

For the past 20 years Ehmke had lived in Winfield. He completed a master's degree in marriage and family therapy at Friends University and worked as a marriage and family counselor.

He was a member of the National Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and collected and sold antiques.

Survivors include his companion, Tom Williams, Winfield; a daughter, Lara Clark, Wichita; and a brother, Michael Ehmke, and four sisters, Kathy Newquist, Patty LeGrand, Margaret Hamilton and Linda Virjee, all of California.

David Lauver

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - David John Lauver, 54, of Portsmouth, died Aug. 7, 1998, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, 5201 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth.

A native of Wichita, Lauver was retired from the U.S. Navy and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Meherrin Bow and Gun Club of Lawrenceville, Va.

Survivors include two brothers, Lyman M. Lauver, Ludington, Mich., and Lynn D. Lauver, Topeka; and a sister, Julia Lambert, Winfield.

Floyd Goode

Services for Floyd William Goode, 84, who died Aug. 4, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 8 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Mark Boxman officiated. Burial was in Round Mound Cemetery near Cedar Vale.

Special vocal selections were recordings of "Go Rest High on that Mountain" by Vince Gill and "One Day at a Time" by Cristy Lane.

Casket bearers were Goode's grandchildren and other family members.

A memorial has been established with the Cedar Vale Volunteer Fire Department.

Henry Bowlby

Services for Henry Otho Bowlby, 79, who died Aug. 7, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 12 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ron Keith officiated.

Winfield American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military ceremonies in Highland Cemetery.

Vocal music selections were "Beyond the Sunset" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Rodney Baker, Jack Bowlby, Jere Dean, Jeff Higdon, Marvin Snell and Ernie Zanardi.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Carroll Sandborn

Services for Marion Carroll Sandborn, 83, who died Aug. 8, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Quentin Bennett officiated.

Winfield American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military ceremonies in Burden Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Delbert Graham, Darrell Horst, Paul Parsons, Clinton and Junior Shorter and Percy Wilson.

A memorial has been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Cloa Wilson

Cloa J. Wilson, 100, longtime Winfield resident, died Aug. 13, 1998, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Rick Thornton will officiate.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 4 to 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the van fund at Cumbernauld Village and First United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Wilson was born Aug. 14, 1897, on a farm near Rose Hill, to Ferdinand and Sadie (Hawks) Finney. When she was a child, the family moved to the Rock area where she was educated at Green Valley rural school.

On Nov. 30, 1916, she married Joseph Keith "Deacon" Wilson in Winfield. The couple resided in Arkansas City for several years following their marriage.

In 1937, they built Wilson's Motel south of Winfield and operated the motel until retiring in 1954.

For 20 years, they spent summers at Memento Island on Raney Lake, Fort Francis, Ontario, Canada. They returned to Winfield during the winters.

Her husband died Oct. 7, 1974. She had resided at Cumbernauld Village since 1994.

Wilson was a member of First United Methodist Church. She had been affiliated with the Merry Matrons and was formerly a member of the Royal Neighbors at Rock.

Survivors include a son, Wilbur K. Wilson, Winfield; a daughter, Winifred M. Lunsford, Overland Park; four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Hugh Mawdsley

WICHITA - Hugh Barton Mawdsley, 92, longtime Winfield resident and former owner/operator of Mawdsley Upholstery Shop, died Aug. 12, 1998, at his home in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and before services Monday.

Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church and Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made at the church or funeral home.

Mawdsley was born April 19, 1906, in Winfield, to the Rev. Peter Lewis and Elizabeth Jane (Canfield) Mawdsley. He was raised and educated in western Kansas communities and later attended Southwestern College and Pittsburg State College.

In 1929 he began his career in upholstery, awning and furniture repair in his shop in Winfield.

On Aug. 14, 1940, he married Luella May Reeve in Winfield.

The Mawdsleys later added awning construction, slipcovering, caning and cabinet-making to their business. He owned and operated the shop for 58 years. During that time, he taught upholstery in night classes at Cowley County Community College.

Following retirement in 1987, the Mawdsleys moved to Dallas to live with their daughter and her family. In 1993 they moved to Wichita. His wife died Sept. 28, 1996.

A member of Grace United Methodist church for over 50 years, Mawdsley had most recently attended Riverlawn Christian Church in Wichita. He was a former Boy Scout leader.

Survivors include twin sons, Donald Mawdsley, Sedgwick, and Ronald Mawdsley, Winfield; a daughter: Elizabeth Blomgren, Wichita; a brother, Robert Mawdsley, Dayton, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Frances Jordan

BURDEN - Services for Frances Ruth Jordan, 77, who died Aug. 9, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at the First Baptist Church in Burden. The Rev. Art Hays officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Shawna Rickard sang "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" and "Near the Cross." Rhonda Kessinger, Denise Liston and Rickard sang "Precious Memories."

Maxine Williams was the pianist, and Wanda Mackey was the organist. Robert Rickard told family memories, and Ron Jordan read a poem.

Honorary casket bearers were Wilma Devore, Rhonda Kessinger, Denise Liston, Sharon Plunkett and Shawna Rickard.

Casket bearers were Troy and Vincent Jordan, Loren Kessinger, Zane Liston, Roger Snyder and Ernie and Rick Ulbrich.

Memorials have been established with Hospice of Norman, Okla., and Burden Baptist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
