Ruth Priest

Ruth Priest, 75, of 1010 E. Seventh, Winfield, died Aug. 19, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Evangelical Free Church. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Evangelical Free Church.

Priest was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Winfield, to Alva Earl and Leota I. (Curfman) Baxter. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1941.

On June 2, 1950, she married John H. Priest.

Mrs. Priest worked at Woolworth's for 10 years, then at TG&Y Department store for eight years.

She and her husband moved to Wichita for a brief period. When they returned to Winfield, she went to work for Walker's Grocery Store for six years before retiring in the early '70s.

She attended the Evangelical Free Church for many years.

Survivors include her husband, John Priest, a brother, Lee F. Baxter, and a sister, Twila Archer, all of Winfield.

Bo Bohannan

DEWEY, Okla. - John Randy "Bo" Bohannan, 45, of Dewey, Okla., died Aug. 16, 1998, near Cushing, Okla.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua. The Rev. Dois Nix will officiate.

Graves-Baird Funeral Home in Sedan has charge of arrangements.

Bohannan was born Feb. 20, 1953, in Sedan, to Betty A. (Custer) and John A. Bohannan Jr.

He was a research technician for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Okla., and belonged to a skydiving club and the Golf Society of the U.S.

Survivors include his father, John A. Bohannan Jr., and his grandmother, Leota Custer, both of Chautauqua; and two sisters, Becky G. Cross, Mulvane, and Anita Mills, Towanda.

Herman Dahlstrom

Graveside services for Herman Paul Dahlstrom, 82, who died Aug. 15, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 19, 1998, in Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita. The Rev. Dale Lewis officiated.

Special vocal music selections were "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" and "Amazing Grace."

Memorials have been established with the Alzheimer's Association and the American Heart Association.

Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.

Jed Smith

UDALL - Lee J. "Jed" Smith, 59, of Udall, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 19, 1998, the result of an accident in Udall.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Udall, The Rev. C.E. McDonald will officiate. Burial will be in Udall Cemetery, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Department of Public Safety in Udall. Contributions may be made at the Udall City Offices, the church or funeral home.

Smith was born July 11, 1939, in Udall, to Jack and Mammie Fern (Taylor) Smith. He was raised and educated in Udall and graduated from Udall High School in 1958.

Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving for four years in Japan and shipboard in the Pacific theatre.

He began work during the early 1960s at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita and worked in auto body repair and construction before beginning employment with Two Rivers Co-Op in Udall during the 1970s. He had served Two Rivers Co-Op for over 20 years.

A lifelong Udall resident, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Udall and was a member and former treasurer of the Udall chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Survivors include a nephew, Robert Smith, and a great-nephew, Robert Turnbough, both of Valejo, Calif., and by a number of cousins.

Marjorie Smith

LYONS - Marjorie L. Smith, 94, longtime Lyons resident, formerly of Dexter, died Aug. 21, 1998, at Good Samaritan Center in Lyons.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Lyons. The Rev. Cindy Watson will officiate. Burial will be in Lyons Municipal Cemetery.

Friends may call at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday.

Memorials have been established with the Lyons United Methodist Church and Southwestern College in Winfield.

Smith was born Aug. 3, 1904, in Lyons, to Gilbert G. and Ethel A. (Sturgeon) Smith. She was a 1923 graduate of Lyons High School and a graduate of Southwestern College.

On Sept. 5, 1937, she married Richard D. Smith in Lyons. He died Sept. 19, 1973.

She retired from teaching high school math in Lyons and Dexter, having taught for 20 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, a charter member of United Methodist Women and a life member of the King's Herolds, all of Lyons, and a life member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include a stepson, Donald Dean Smith, Haysville; a half-sister, Pat Higgs, Wichita; and a granddaughter.

Anna Cain

ARKANSAS CITY - Anna Mae Sellers Cain, 80, of Arkansas City, formerly of Newkirk, Okla., died Aug. 19, 1998, at her home in Arkansas City.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Newkirk Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service in Newkirk.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and until 10:30 Saturday morning. The family will be at 210 S. Walnut in Newkirk the day of the service.

Cain was born March 7, 1918, in Canton, to John M. and Delia May (Delay) Hager. She grew up on the family farm and began school at Liberty rural school between Canton and Galva. The family moved to Boise City, Okla., and lived there until 1932 when they moved to Newkirk. She graduated from Newkirk High School in 1937.

On May 5, 1940, she married Alexander Sellers in Newkirk, where they established their first home. She was an Avon representative for a time and later worked in the Newkirk Nursing Center. In 1965 she began working at Winfield State Hospital, and in 1966 when Mr. Sellers entered a nursing home in Winfield, she moved into the hospital dormitory to be closer to him. He died Oct. 10, 1966. She continued working at the hospital and living in the hospital dorm. after his death.

On March 11, 1968, she married Therman Cain in Arkansas City. They made their home in Winfield for a time before moving to Arkansas City. Mr. Cain died in 1972. In 1980 Mrs. Cain changed from her job at the hospital to the school grandparent program in Kansas.

Survivors include a son, Alexander Sellers, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Gracie Winters, Newkirk, Okla.; two brothers, Jack Hager, Newkirk, and Eldon Hager, Ponca City, Okla.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Nancy Hodges

UDALL - Nancy Carol Hodges, 58, died Aug. 20, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Udall United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Ninnescah Cemetery, south of Udall, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Udall United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or the funeral home.

Hodges was born May 12, 1940, at St. Mary's Hospital in Winfield, to Oscar Bernard and Helen Estella Wise. She was raised on a farm near Udall and educated at Sand Creek rural school south of Udall. She graduated from Udall High School in 1958 and later from Wichita Business College.

On June 24, 1961, she married Gerald L. Hodges at the Udall United Methodist Church. They resided in Winfield for a year before moving to their home in Udall.

Mrs. Hodges was employed at the First National Bank in Winfield for three years prior to moving to Udall. She had served as assistant cashier for the Bank of Commerce in Udall for the past 31 years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Udall for over 43 years and was Past Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge 473. A member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Sorority, she was affiliated locally with the Beta Beta Chapter of ESA in Andover.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald Hodges, Udall; two sons, Steven Hodges, Des Moines, Iowa, and Bernie Hodges, Udall; a daughter, LeAnn Esslinger, her mother, Helen Wise, and a sister, Mary Ellen Norton, all of Udall; and a granddaughter.

Ruth Priest

Services for Ruth Irene Priest, 75, who died Aug. 19, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 21, 1998, at the Evangelical Free Church in Winfield. The Revs. Steve Strom and Steve Janschek officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery.

Sara Weinert was pianist. Rex Beeney sang "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden."

Honorary casket bearers were Clyde Shay, Ralph Miller, John Morgan, Bill Callaway and LeRoy Rakestraw.

Casket bearers were Keith Archer, Mike Rethmaier, Jerry DeVore, Bill McArtor, Terry Gray and Henry Eggleston.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Edwin Brown

WELLINGTON - Edwin G. Brown, 63, a Wellington resident for 29 years, died Aug. 22, 1998, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Southern Baptist Church. Pastor Phil Wylie will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Katlyn's Hope. Donations may be made through Frank Funeral Home.

Brown was born Nov. 29, 1934, in Harlan, to Jacob and Lena (Hauser) Brown.

On July 25, 1954, he married VaLeta McMillen in Osborne.

He retired as an officer of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks after 27 years of service.

He was a member of Wellington Lodge 150 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Wichita.

Survivors include his wife VaLeta Brown, Wellington; three sons, Jacob Lee Brown, Wellington, Edwin E. Brown, Conway Springs, and Steven Roy Brown, Wichita; two daughters, Rachel D. Barnes and Martha M. Larsen, both of Wellington; four brothers, Leonard Brown, Kenneth Brown and John Brown, all of Osborne, and Bob Brown, Oak Creek, Colo.; a sister, Alberte Davis, Osborne; and 18 grandchildren.
