Mike Hoskins

WICHITA - Michael C. "Mike" Hoskins, 33, of Wichita, formerly of Arkansas City, died Aug. 28, 1998, in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Arkansas City. The Rev. David Stanley will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

The family will greet friends at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Hoskins was born Dec. 24, 1964, in Arkansas City to Lewis and Sherri (Penrose) Hoskins. He was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1983. He attended Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.

Juanita Montoya

A Mass of Christian Burial for Juanita A. Montoya, 76, who died Aug. 27, 1998, was held at 10 a.m. Sept. 1 in Holy Name Catholic Church. The Revs. Michael Maybrier and Eugene Grabner officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Vocal music was "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," "Amazing Grace," "I Am the Bread of Life" and "Song of Farewell," presented by Shirley Walker and music leader Bill Chamberland. Dorothy Groene was the organist.

Casket bearers were Mike Gibbons, Jim Kittelson, Curtis Roland, Roger Rupp, Phil Porter and Phil Wedd.

A Rosary service was held at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Miles Funeral Service.

Thelma Defore

Services for Thelma Pearl Defore, 85, who died Aug. 30, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 2 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Defore's grandsons, the Revs. Dane Massey and Bobby Massey, officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Jacquelyn Houlden, Defore's granddaughter, sang "Only One Step More" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were grandsons Scott Biddle, Larry Clyne, Dan A. Defore, Mark Gordon, Trent Houlden and Todd Massey.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation.

Herman Green

COFFEYVILLE - Herman Monroe Green, 90, of Coffeyville, died Aug. 29, 1998, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

Services were held Sept. 2 in Belknap Cemetery north of Sedan. Ford-Wulf-Bruns Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Green was born Feb. 14, 1908, near Moline, to William Young and Minta (Lee) Green. He attended Belknap School near his home and then helped his father on the farm.

Green had been a resident of Coffeyville for many years.

He joined the Philadelphia Baptist Church in Leeds as a boy.

Survivors include a brother, James Howard, Tribune; and two sisters, Cora Dolly McGlasson and Lela Florene Helphingstine, both of Winfield.

Randy Sloan

MULVANE - Randy Lee Sloan, 41, construction worker, of Mulvane, died Sept. 1, 1998, in Sedgwick County.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Mulvane United Methodist Church. The Revs. Lawrence Sloan and David Sloan will officiate. Baker Funeral Home of Valley Center is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Mulvane Public Library.

Sloan was born June 11, 1957, to Walter Lee and Frances Charlene (Lewis) Sloan.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Walter and Margaret Sloan, Winfield; his mother and stepfather, Charlene Sloan and Clint Biggs; three brothers, Richard L. Sloan, Mulvane, David M. Sloan, Park City, and Christopher L. Sloan, Wichita; and a sister, Frances Phillips, and his grandmother, Frances Lewis, both of Valley Center.

Ruby Young

ARKANSAS CITY - Ruby Iola Young, 89, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 3, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the North Summit Street Church of Christ. Jesse Kindred will officiate. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with SCCS Hospice. Contributions can be made through Hawks Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

Young was born Nov. 6, 1909, near Sumpter, Okla., to Clyde and Elizabeth (Wood) Dickason. She was raised in the Braman, Okla., area and graduated from Blackwell High School. She then worked at Yost Grocery Store in Yost, Okla.

On Sept. 10, 1945, she married John Robert Young in Winfield, and they had lived in Arkansas City since that time. She worked at Kincaid and Robinson Cleaners for several years and sold garden produce and eggs for many years.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Her husband died June 13, 1982.

Survivors include a son, John Young, Arkansas City; a brother, Leslie Dickason, Chanute; and two grandchildren.

Edna Ele

Edna L. "Edie" Ele, 65, of 2740 S. Main, Winfield, died Sept. 4, 1998, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.

Memorials have been established with the Church of the Nazarene and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the church or the funeral home.

Ele was born Sept. 7, 1932, in Mulvane, to Frank and Mabel (Shipman) Isenbart. She was raised and educated in the Mulvane area. During the early 1950s she worked at Boeing Aircraft Co. She received her education in cosmetology in Richmond, Va., where she graduated in 1956. When she returned to Kansas, she began her practice in cosmetology in Yates Center.

In 1970 she moved to Mulvane. On Aug. 26, 1972, she married William "Bill" Ele in Derby. They lived in Mulvane before moving to Winfield in 1973.

She owned and operated Love Hair Fashions in Winfield until her retirement in 1993.

A member of the Church of the Nazarene in Winfield, she was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was formerly affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star, the Winfield Country Club and the Winfield Country Club Ladies Golf Association.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Ele, a son, William "Bill" Almond, and a daughter, Kimberly Winegarner, all of Winfield; two stepsons, Ron Ele, Arkansas City, and Robert Ele, Utah; a stepdaughter, Linda Hayes, Winfield; a brother, Ernest Isenbart, Springdale, Ark.; four sisters, Florence Smith, Paducah, Ky., Nina Howard, Seattle, Wash.; Hazel Dollard, Winfield, and Verna French, McPherson; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

William Kelley

WELLINGTON - William Raymond Kelley, 77, of Wellington, died Sept. 5, 1998, at Sumner Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Belle Plaine Cemetery with Pastor Danny Ginn officiating. Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home until 9 p.m. today and Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with Beaver Creek Village. Contributions can be made at the funeral home.

Kelley was born Aug. 16, 1921, at Gurdon, Ark., to William and Crochie (Williams) Kelley. He served with the Army during World War II.

On May 16, 1948, he married Lorraine Mae Cooper in Wichita. She died Aug. 2, 1991.

Kelley was chief inspector for Phillips Petroleum before his retirement. He moved to Wellington from Hominy, Okla., in 1997.

He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cleveland, Okla., and the Operating Engineers Union.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Kelley, Milan; a daughter, Marcia Murrell, Winfield; a sister, Violet Wilson, Texarkana, Ark.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Neal Lacey

OKLAHOMA CITY - Neal L. Lacey, 36, died Sept. 4, 1998, at his home in Oklahoma City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Ephworth Methodist Church, 1901 N. Douglas, Oklahoma City. Pastors Charla Gwartney, Kathy McCallie and Doyle Kinney will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Clinton, Okla., cemetery under the direction of Stanley-Lee Funeral Home of Clinton.

Lacey was born March 6, 1962, in Clinton to Stoney and Joyce (Brown) Lacey. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1980 and received an associate degree from Commonwealth College of Funeral Service, Houston, in 1988 and a bachelor's degree from Phillips University, Enid, Okla., in 1993.

Lacey had been a business owner and manager; a funeral director and embalmer; an employee of the University of Miami Medical School and a self-employed investor and owner of real estate properties.

Lacey had been a member of various organizations, including Pi Sigma Eta; Red Door Resources; Regional AIDS Interfaith Network Team; Northern Lights Alternatives, Ephworth United Methodist Church and Positive Power in Two.

Survivors include his daughter, Angel Roediger, Oklahoma City; his parents, Stoney and Joyce Lacey, Clinton; two sisters, Sparla Dick, Winfield, and Charlene Butler, Clinton; and his grandmother, Velma Brown.

Ina Thornton

KINSLEY - Ina May Thornton, 87, of Kinsley, died Sept. 4, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in McPherson Cemetery. The Rev. William Soule will officiate. Friends may call at Stockham Family Funeral Home in McPherson from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The family will be there from 6 to 8.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Children's Service League and the American Heart Association.

Thornton was born Aug. 29, 1911, in Cowley County to Walter Clayton and Ella May (Ruggles) Ogilbee.

On June 1, 1935, she married Paul Appling in Winfield. He died May 4, 1957. On July 11, 1963, she married George Thornton in Macksville. He died Oct. 20, 1982.

Thornton, a retired dental assistant, moved from Geneseo to Kinsley in 1964. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lyons; and the United Methodist Church, Sunflower Extension Homemaker Unit and Birthday Club, all of Kinsley.

Survivors include a son, Larry L. Appling, Kinsley; a niece she raised, Jean A. Bechtel, Osawatomie; and three grandchildren.

Josephine Boerngen

DENVER - Josephine "Jo" Rebecca (Briscoe) Boerngen, 75, of Denver, formerly of Cowley County, died Aug. 28, 1998, in Denver.

She donated her body to the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. Her ashes will be placed in a crypt at St. John's Cathedral in Denver, where her husband is buried.

Boerngen was born March 22, 1923, in Cowley County, to John Hinton and Alta R. (Woolsey) Briscoe. During her early years she lived on the family ranch north of Cambridge and in Burden. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1940 and briefly attended Southwestern College.

On July 27, 1941, she married Stanley S. Graham in Winfield. They later divorced.

On Feb. 6, 1954, she married Frank D. Boerngen. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Robert Douglass "Todd" Boerngen, Key West, Fla.; a daughter, Karen Lee Boerngen, Carson City, Nev.; and several nephews and nieces, including Barbara Parsons, Winfield.
