David Moralez
MOLINE - David Moralez, 91, retired railroad worker, of Moline, died Sept. 6, 1998.
A Rosary service will be held at 7 this evening at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.
Memorials have been established with Elk Manor Nursing Home and Moline Senior Citizens Center. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Moralez was a retired Santa Fe Railroad worker. He was a member of the Santa Fe Railroad Retirement Brotherhood and St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a nephew, George Edward Morales Sr., and two nieces, Esmeralda M. Flores and Matilda Morales, all of Waco, Texas.
Alice Bowlby
WICHITA - Alice N. Bowlby, 94, homemaker, of Wichita, formerly of Udall, died Sept. 6, 1998.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Broadway Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with SCCS Hospice in Derby.
Bowlby was a daughter of Charles and Mary Nave. Her husband, Charles A. Bowlby, died in 1959.
Survivors include a son, Charles Bowlby, and a sister, Lottie Learned, both of Wichita; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Joan Colquhoun
ARKANSAS CITY - Joan Colquhoun, 62, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 8, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Arkansas City High School All-Sports Booster Club. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Colquhoun was born April 19, 1936, at Silverdale, to William and Louella (Pingry) Lowrie. She was raised in the Arkansas City area and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1954.
In March 1959 she married Richard Colquhoun.
An employee of South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in the dietary department, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son, David Colquhoun, and two daughters, Tammy Colquhoun and Kelly Olson, all of Arkansas City; a brother, Gary Lowrie, Dodge City; a sister, Zella Elliot, Arkansas City; and six grandchildren.
Edie Ele
Services for Edna L. "Edie" Ele, 65, who died Sept. 4, 1998, were held at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 8 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Jeff Fletcher officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Special vocal music, "Amazing Grace," "Peace in the Valley" and "Victory in Jesus," was presented by Eugene Shields II. Organist was Irma Scholfield.
Honorary casket bearers were Orvan Gilstrap, Kern Gordon, Red Lambert, Deter Leudke, Dave Warren and Rance Winegarner.
Casket bearers were Bob Dickerson, Herb Hays, Delbert Peters, Ray Potter, Larry Scarth and Bill Taylor.
Memorials have been established with the Church of the Nazarene and Hospice Inc.
Homer Higdon
WICHITA - Homer L. "Red" Higdon, 74, retired Kansas Gas and Electric underground foreman, died Sept. 8, 1998.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Olivet Southern Baptist Church in Wichita and 3 p.m. in Graceland Cemetery
at Burlington.
Memorials have been established with Olivet Southern Baptist Church, 3440 W. 13th, Wichita, KS 67204, and the American Cancer Society, 400 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67202.
Higdon was born Jan. 7, 1924, in Latham, to Cecil and Lydia (Deinlein) Higdon. He was raised in Winfield.
On Dec. 30, 1954, he married Rayda Kanitz in Hutchinson.
Survivors include his wife, Rayda Higdon, Wichita; a son, Homer Higdon Jr., San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Guyla Michael, Sevierville, Tenn., and Georgia Robison, Belle Plaine; a stepson, Dick Deatrick, Hutchinson; a stepdaughter, Karen Roberts, Harrisonville, Ark.; two brothers, Virgil Higdon, Cupertino, Calif., and Everett Higdon, Cathedral City, Calif.; a sister, Wanda Higdon, Cupertino, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Thelma Leming
MOLINE - Thelma Ravilla Leming, 89, of Moline, died Sept. 9, 1998, at Sedan City Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Moline Baptist Church. Pastor Harold Tucker will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.
A memorial has been established as the Thelma Leming Memorial Love Fund for the Elderly at the Howard State Bank in Moline. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Leming was born Jan. 30, 1909, in Hennessey, Okla., to Franklin Luther and Lillie Elizabeth Cora Jane (Caulk) Gritz. The family moved to Fall River, and she graduated from Fall River High School in 1928.
She received normal training in Emporia and Pittsburg and taught for eight years in country schools in Greenwood and Wilson counties.
On Aug. 1, 1937, she married Lawrence Samuel Leming in Fall River. They made their home in Everest for five years before moving to North Kansas City, Mo., in 1942. She was a substitute teacher in North Kansas City for 18 years. After retiring in 1972, the Lemings made their home in Eagle Rock, Mo., until moving to Moline in 1996.
Leming was a member of the All Faith United Methodist Church in Eagle Rock and had attended the Moline Baptist Church. She was also a member of the National Campers and Hikers Association.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Leming, Moline; three daughters, Ruth Beal, Effingham, Janet Lampson, Moline, and Vera Callaway, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, George Gritz, LaJara, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Opal Newgren
Opal Sue Newgren, 91, of Route 2, Winfield, died Sept. 10, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today.
Memorials have been established with Sterling House in Arkansas City and the First Baptist Church in Winfield. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.
Newgren was born Feb. 2, 1907, at Pauls Valley, Calif., to William Nathan and Georgia Lee (Austin) Wainscott. When Newgren was a child, the family moved to Bartlesville, Okla., where she graduated from Bartlesville High School. As a young woman she began employment with Bell Telephone Co. and moved with the company to California in 1939.
On Sept. 21, 1940, she married Einar Waldemier Newgren in Reno, Nev. They made their home in San Jose, Calif., for over 40 years. Newgren was employed as an operator and supervisor for Pacific Bell Telephone, retiring after 37 years of service.
The Newgrens moved to Winfield in 1983. Her husband died Oct. 20, 1983. Newgren resided at Winfield Rest Haven from 1990 to 1994 before moving to Sterling House in Arkansas City.
She had attended the Swedish Covenant Church in San Jose.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Iris and Leonard Biddle, Wayne and Joan Rush, John and Shirley Rush and Eli and Ramona Rush, all of Winfield.
Janice Hammond
RICHARDSON, Texas - Janice A. Hammond, 63, of Richardson, died Sept. 9, 1998, in Richardson.
Memorial services will be held at 5:30 tonight at Sparkman Funeral Home Chapel in Richardson.
Memorial contributions can be made to the United Way.
Hammond was born June 5, 1935, in Joplin, Mo.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Hammond, Richardson; a son, Michael Hammond, Winfield; two daughters, Karen Bruning and Mary Harbour; a brother, Jerry Allen; her stepmother, Evelyn Allen; and four grandchildren.
Helen Green
TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Helen N. Green, 69, of Torrington, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 9, 1998, at Torrington Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Southwest Indian Foundation and the World Wildlife Federation.
Green was born May 13, 1929, in Winfield, to H.C. and Mary (Friend) Brooner. She was raised and educated in Kansas and received a bachelor's degree from Wichita State University.
On Sept. 3, 1949, she married Wayne Evert Green in Winfield. She raised her family, then went on to receive a master's degree in psychology from Tulsa University. The Greens then moved to Wyoming, and she worked as a therapist at the Southeast Mental Health Center. She later was employed by the Converse County Group Home, Douglass, Wyo., working with foster care in three counties. She returned to Torrington in 1989 after the death of her husband.
While in Winfield Green played viola in a string quartet with the Morning Music Club. She was a member of Torrington's arts council and worked in setting up art shows in Goshen County.
Survivors include a son, Evert Green, Ponca City, Okla.; two daughters, Mary Wise and Martha Ferrazzano, both of Torrington; two brothers, George Brooner, Chesterton, Md., and Roger Brooner, Sedgwick; a sister, Margaret Wilson, York, Neb.; and five grandchildren.
Daniel Converse
IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. - Daniel Allan Converse, 44, of Idaho Springs, died Sept. 7, 1998, at Idaho Springs.
Services were held at 9 a.m. Sept. 12 in Hoosier Cemetery
at Kingman. Pastor Matthew Keith officiated. Family and friends served as casket bearers.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Kingman Christian Church Building Fund.
Converse was born Feb. 14, 1954, in Wichita, to Russell and Betty (Rhoades) Converse. He was raised and educated in Wichita.
A longtime resident of Colorado, he was a ranch hand and worked for a Budweiser distributing company.
He was active in Civil War re-enactments and a member of the Westside Christian Church in Wichita.
Survivors include his parents, Russell and Betty Converse, Kingman; two brothers, David Lee Converse, Joliet, Ill., and John Russell Converse, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two sisters, Peggy Drennan, Winfield, and Martha Sue Ellis, Mulvane.
