Elvin Morris
Elvin L. Morris, 88, longtime Winfield resident, died Sept. 26, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Private memorial services will be held later, officiated by the Rev. Warren Smith. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Born July 17, 1910, on a farm southeast of Winfield, he was a son of Thaddeus O. and Blanche R. (Rockwell) Morris. He was raised in the Winfield area and attended Maple Grove rural school.
In 1941 Morris moved to Glendale, Calif. A veteran of World War II, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army with the 103rd Evacuation Hospital.
Following discharge, he returned to California where he worked as a blueprinter and draftsman for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. in Glendale. He retired in 1969 following 25 years of service.
In 1969 he returned to Winfield where he made his home until moving to Riverview Manor in Oxford in 1994.
He attended First Baptist Church in Winfield.
Survivors include a sister, Elsie L. Morris, Winfield.
Gladys Satterthwaite
Gladys Mae Satterthwaite, 86, of 1201 Menor, Winfield, died Sept. 28, 1998, at her home.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Udall United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery
at Winfield.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with the Udall United Methodist Church and the Walnut Towers Activity Fund. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Satterthwaite was born March 25, 1912, to G.W. and Cora M. (Harp) Anderson near Warner, Okla. She attended Oswego schools.
On Dec. 12, 1930, she married Fred H. Duensing in Wellington. They resided in the Cedar Vale and Moline areas before moving to Winfield in 1952. Mr. Duensing died Sept. 15, 1968.
On Nov. 28, 1971, she married Ira Satterthwaite and they resided in Udall. He died Nov. 1, 1988. She remained in Udall until moving to Winfield in October 1997.
Satterthwaite worked in the laundry department at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center during the late 1960s. She retired in 1971.
She was a member of the Udall United Methodist Church and the Cooperettes Extension Homemakers Unit.
Survivors include two sons, Fred W. "Bill" Duensing, Winfield, and Robert D. Duensing, Wichita; three daughters, Leona Hamm, Winfield, Jeanie Kistler, Udall, and June Rockey, Topeka; three brothers, Samuel Anderson, Oklahoma, W. Earl Anderson, Cushing, Okla., and Charles H. Anderson, Grove, Okla.; a sister, Rose Blackburn, Sallisaw, Okla., 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, eight stepgreat-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Marjorie Utt
CEDAR VALE - Marjorie Utt, 76, of Cedar Vale, died Sept. 29, 1998, at Cedar Vale Nursing Center.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Cedar Vale Cemetery. Wheeler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with Cedar Vale Nursing Center.
Utt was born Dec. 4, 1921, in Dexter, to Dolph and Rosetta (Hawkins) Bennett. She attended schools in Dexter and Cedar Vale and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1940.
On June 7, 1940, she married Maurice Utt in Cedar Vale and had lived there since. She had been a cashier at Caney Valley Electric and also a nurse's aide.
Survivors include her husband, Maurice Utt, Cedar Vale; three sons, Daryl Utt, Wakita, Okla., and Marvin Utt and Blaine Utt, both of Dexter; a brother, Dale Bennett, Wichita; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Gladys Satterthwaite
Gladys May Satterthwaite, 86, of 1201 Menor, Winfield, died Sept. 28, 1998, at her home.

Octa Bumpas
ARKANSAS CITY - Octa Lee Bumpas, 80, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 28, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hawks Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Bumpas was born July 25, 1918, in Okmulgee, Okla., to Leflrich and Cassie Rebecca (Willis) Hanson. She was raised in the Pawnee, Okla., area.
On March 24, 1936, she married Willie Hall in Pawnee. They moved to Arkansas City in 1944. He died Dec. 11, 1962.
On Oct. 7, 1964, she married Odell Bumpas in Winfield. They continued to live in Arkansas City.
A cook at the Arkansas City Country Club for several years, she also cooked at Bud's Bar-B-Que in Arkansas City for nearly 30 years until her retirement.
She was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church and the Daughters of Isaac.
Survivors include her husband, Odell Bumpas, Arkansas City; three sons, Willie H. Hall, Dwayne Lee Hall and John Virgil Hall, all of Arkansas City; two daughters, Elvee Hall, Winfield, and Georgia Ann Redd, Wichita; three brothers, Tom Hanson, Tulsa, Okla., and Jim Hanson and Dick Hanson, both of Los Angeles; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Cassie Towles, preceded her in death.
Dorothy Henman
EL DORADO - Dorothy Henman, 85, of El Dorado, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 28, 1998, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 1 at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial was in Walnut Valley Memorial Park.
Memorials have been established with the Bradford Memorial Library Talking Books and the Butler County Community College Endowment Association for the Perry W. and Dorothy R. Henman Nursing Scholarship. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Henman was born Aug. 5, 1913, in Nimrod, Ark., to Robert Henry and Zenobia (Earl) McBee. Her father died when she was two years old. She grew up near Hiwasse, Ark. Her formal schooling ended in eighth grade, but she received her general equivalency diploma in 1955. She was a supporter of Butler County Community College where she endowed a nursing scholarship.
In 1929 she married Perry W. Henman, and they lived in Augusta until 1953. For 10 years they lived in Winfield where she worked at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. After retiring, they moved to Boswell, Ark., in 1973. They moved to El Dorado in March 1981, and her husband died that fall.
Henman was a member of the Life Enrichment Program at BCCC, El Dorado Senior Citizens, Butler County Historical Society and Sunshine Club.
She had worked at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital as a licensed practical nurse in the mid-1950s and later volunteered with the hospital auxiliary and the American Red Cross. She was also a member of the El Dorado Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sons, Irvin Henman, Leon, and Ivan Henman, Plainwell, Mich.; a daughter, Iris Lawrence, El Dorado; 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A son, Perry Allen Henman, preceded her in death.
Garnett Kampschroeder
Garnett Kampschroeder, 77, of Route 5, Winfield, died Oct. 1, 1998, at her home.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to noon Monday.
A memorial fund has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Kampschroeder was born Nov. 12, 1920, in Sun City, to I.A. "Bert" and Florence (Reber) Miller. She lived there for just a few years before moving to Winfield. She graduated from Winfield High School.
Kampschroeder worked as a bookkeeper at Sunrise Dairy for a few years, then managed the Peter Pan Ice Cream Store. She also worked at Wal-Mart for a brief time before retiring from Mode-O-Day as manager. All the while, she ran the family farm southeast of Winfield.
Survivors include one son, Henry Kay Kampschroeder, Derby, and two grandchildren.
Ila Ruth Hubbell
Ila Ruth Hubbell, 83, formerly of Howard, died Oct. 1, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Hubbell was born July 5, 1915, in Burns, to Jonathan Joel and Cora Bell (Graves) Hurd. She attended school and lived her early life in the Burns community. In 1930 she moved with her family to a farm north of Howard, in rural Elk County, and attended high school in Severy.
On June 17, 1933, she married Carl Allison "Bill" Hubbell in El Dorado. They operated a farm and ranch near Howard for many years. A homemaker, Hubbell was also employed for several years as secretary of the Elk County Farm Bureau.
The Hubbells moved into Howard in 1964. Her husband died Oct. 22, 1985.
Hubbell had been a resident of Good Samaritan Village since October 1997.
She was a longtime member of Howard United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Lamplighter Circle for many years. She was a former member of an Elk County Home Demonstration Unit.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Hubbell, Howard, and Melvin Hubbell, Winfield; a daughter, Carolyn Brogan, Plano, Texas; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
