Philip Wilcox

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. - Philip "Phil" Wilcox, 70, of Paradise Valley, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 1, 1998.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Messenger's Mortuary and Chapel, Scottsdale, Ariz. A second service will be held Oct. 9 at Grace Episcopal Church in Winfield.

A U.S. Navy veteran who served in Guam, he will be buried in the United States Veterans Cemetery in Phoenix.

Memorials have been established with Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower, Phoenix, AZ 85014-5699; the ALS Association, "Valley of the Sun," 3507 N. Central Ave., Suite 202, Phoenix, AZ. 85012; and the Arizona Humane Society, P.O. Box 47270, Phoenix, AZ 85068-7270.

Wilcox was born Sept. 14, 1928, in Winfield, to Gene and Louise (Frankenfeld) Wilcox. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1946 and worked part time at the Courier while a student.

He received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Kansas in 1952. He was a member of the Chancellor's Club at KU and the President's Club at Kansas State University.

Wilcox began his business career with The Kansas Power and Light Co. in Junction City. While there, he had an opportunity to work in the cable television industry through Communications Services Inc. CSI grew and extended throughout the Midwest and southern states. The company installed the first "earth station" satelite receiver in 1977 and was the first to bring HBO and Show Time to system subscribers. Ultimately, the company was part of TCI.

Wilcox was a member of the National Association of Cable Television Pioneers.

After retiring in 1984, he moved to LaJolla, Calif., and Paradise Valley, Ariz. He was a leader in numerous community organizations, including the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Association of the United States Navy, Salvation Army and Red Cross.

Wilcox was also a member of the Episcopal Church, the Humane Society and community theater.

Survivors include his wife, Sue (Grosjean) Wilcox, Paradise Valley; three daughters, Jeanne Rody and Jane Wilcox, both of Scottsdale, and Julie Cowan, Hamilton, Ohio; his father and stepmother, Gene and Sally Wilcox, Winfield; a brother, Hal Wilcox, Arkansas City; a sister, Laura Kretschmer, Cincinnati, Ohio; and four grandsons.

Rhonda Dennett

BURDEN - Rhonda Dennett, 83, of Burden, died Oct. 3, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Burden United Methodist Church. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff will officiate. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Burden First Responders and the Burden United Methodist Church.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Burden has charge of arrangements.

Dennett was born June 9, 1915, in Rose Hill, to Elvin and Lavina (Davis) Cox. She attended Rose Hill schools and graduated from high school in 1933.

On Nov. 23, 1935, she married Herman Dennett in Wichita. They moved to Burden in 1962. Mr. Dennett died on Dec. 20, 1985.

Mrs. Dennett had worked as a psychiatric aide at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center for 23 years. She retired in 1981.

She was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church and was active in the Burden Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include five sons, Carl LeRoy Dennett, Oxford, Earl Dean Dennett, Enid, Okla., Virgil E. Dennett, Winfield, Vernon C. Dennett, Burden, and Kenneth Merle Dennett, Rose Hill; three brothers, Kermit Cox, Rose Hill, Victor Cox, Andover, and Vestal Cox, Wichita; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Louise Baker

SAPULPA, Okla. - Louise Scott Baker, 81, of Sapulpa, Okla., died Oct. 3, 1998, at Bartlett Memorial Medical Center.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Udall Cemetery.

Smith Funeral Home of Sapulpa is in charge of arrangements.

Baker was born Oct. 7, 1916, in Udall, to the Rev. Henry S. and Zella Louise (Brookhouser) Scott.

She was retired from Boeing Aircraft Co. where she worked as a comp. operator.

She had attended the Methodist Church in Douglass.

In 1994 she moved to Sapulpa from Tulsa.

Survivors include a son, Bob Tharp, Sapulpa; two sisters, Marie Finch, Parsons, and Vera Miller, Derby; and three grandchildren.

Ruby Shoaff

Ruby May Shoaff, 94, of Good Samaritan Village, Winfield, formerly of Blackwell, Okla., died Oct. 2, 1998.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Blackwell Cemetery. The Rev. Geoffrey Pfaff will officiate.

Shoaff was born Dec. 23, 1903, in Coin, Mo., to Jessie Milton and Nola May (Jones) Romine. She moved from Missouri to Bartlesville, Okla., with her parents when she was six years old. In 1913 they moved to Blackwell where she grew up.

On Sept. 11, 1920, she married Roscoe Howard Shoaff in Hominy, Okla. They lived in various places in Kansas and Oklahoma while he worked as an oil field driller. They moved to Washington state in 1942 and lived there until 1955 when they moved to Denver. A year later, they moved to Las Vegas, Nev. Mr. Shoaff died in 1963. Mrs. Shoaff moved to California in 1967 and to Winfield in 1968.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Kiespert, Denver, Colo.; a sister, Georgia Van Cleve, Winfield; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Georgianna Allen, preceded Mrs. Shoaff in death.

Charles Houser

WICHITA - Charles William Daily Houser Jr., 80, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 4, 1998, in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Rock United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. Hillside Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Arthritis Foundation.

Houser was born March 23, 1918, in Winfield, to Charles William Daily and Stella (Cochran) Houser. On Nov. 19, 1934, he married Pauline Howard in Anthony.

He was a retired Boeing tool and die maker and a retired Santa Fe Railway machinist.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Houser, Wichita; seven sons, Charles and Chet Houser, both of Wichita, Woodrow Houser, Derby, Joe Houser, Arkansas City, Paul Houser, Fort Collins, Colo., Ray Houser, Augusta, and Felix Houser, Burden; five daughters, Claudine Wiseman, Bonner Springs, Donna Ehmke, Mulvane, Carryl Routh, Edwardsville, Virginia Macy, Lakeworth, Texas, and Mildred Venissat, Garyville, La.; two sisters, Catherine Houser, Augusta, and Iris Ahlerich, Douglass; 74 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Marlene Roberts

HUTCHINSON - Dona "Marlene" Roberts, 66, of Hutchinson, died Oct. 5, 1998, at Hutchinson Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Westside Baptist Church. The Rev. Roger Dunn will preside. Burial will be in Burrton Cemetery.

Friends may call at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, 300 E. 30th, from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the ALS Foundation. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Roberts was born Aug. 8, 1932, at Skiatook, Okla., to J.L. and Ione (Nabors) McMannis. A longtime Reno County resident, she was a 1950 graduate of Burrton High School and a 1951 graduate of Salt City Business College in Hutchinson.

On Dec. 31, 1952, she married Richard H. Roberts at Burrton.

Roberts was a nurse for Halstead Hospital for seven years and Greensburg Hospital for two years. She was vice president of Haven State Bank until retiring in March 1997.

Roberts was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Turon.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Roberts, Hutchinson; five sons, Michael Roberts, Salina, Pat Roberts, Stonebridge, Ga., Dan Roberts, Burrton, Bret Roberts, Hutchinson, and Tim Roberts, South Hutchinson; a daughter, Diane L. Williams, Winfield; her mother, Ione McMannis, Buhler; three brothers, LaVier McMannis, Hutchinson, Elman McMannis, Canton, and Don McMannis, Burrton; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Oscar Hull

CEDAR VALE - Oscar L. Hull, 70, of Cedar Vale, died Oct. 3, 1998, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. Wheeler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.

Hull was born July 15, 1928, in Cedar Vale, to William Oliver and Ida Myrtle (Laird) Hull. He attended schools in Cedar Vale.

After 11 years in the United States Air Force, he spent several years in ranch maintenance and working as a cowboy at Cedar Vale area ranches.

Om March 31, 1950, he married Phyllisellen McClure in Lordsburg, N.M.

He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Hull, Cedar Vale; a daughter, Ginger Hull, Lacey, Wash.; a stepson, Steven Dobney, Chinle, Ariz.; three brothers, Ernest Hull, Cambridge, Adary Hull, Dexter, and Omer Hull, Cedar Vale; four sisters, Una Cook, Cedar Vale, Ida Moore, Wichita, Reba Thompson, Sedan, and Ula Mae Rucker, Houston; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Kelly Naegele

Kelly Kay (Utt) Naegele, 36, of Winfield, died Oct. 5, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roderick Hathaway officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Shawn Kenneth and Ryan Max Naegele Education Fund.

Naegele was born Aug. 15, 1962, in Winfield to Gary M. Utt and Carolyn K. (Hall) Aubert. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1980 and Cowley County Community College in 1982.

In 1981 she married Cris Naegele in Arkansas City. The couple later divorced.

Naegele had been employed by Home National Bank, Arkansas City, and Southwest National Bank, Wichita. She and her sons moved to Winfield in 1992, and she had been employed at Boogaarts.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons, Shawn and Ryan Naegle, her father and stepmother, Gary and Julie Utt, and her mother and stepfather, Carolyn and Ben Aubert, all of Winfield; a brother, John Utt, Drexel, Mo.; two stepsisters, Debbie Smith, Winfield, and Aimee Freeland, Greeley, Colo.; and her grandmothers, Addie Utt, Winfield, Verena Ryan, Arkansas City, and Evelyn Hensley, Tampa.

John McMillen

John R. "J.R." McMillen, 85, of Winfield, retired self-employed interior decorator, died Oct. 4, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Cremation was effected at Downing & Lahey Mortuary in Wichita. No services are planned.

McMillen was born Feb. 15, 1913, in Caney, to Clyde and Addie (Clayton) McMillen.

He had operated interior decorating businesses in Hutchinson and Colorado Springs, Colo.

His wife, Connie, preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, Clayton R. McMillen, Houston, and Rodney McMillen, Manitou Springs, Colo.; a brother, Royce McMillen, Manhattan; two sisters, Ann McComas, Winfield, and Erlene Smith, Abilene, Texas; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
