Garnett Kampschroeder

Services for Garnett Kampschroeder, 77, who died Oct. 1, 1998, were held at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Paul Lynn officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music selections included "Peace in the Valley," "How Great Thou Art" and "Holy Lord, Carry On."

Honorary casket bearers were Charlie Weller and Crystal Kampschroeder.

Casket bearers were Dennis Hittle, Robert Dunn, Drew Kampschroeder and Chris, Rick and Richard Weller.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.

Bill Crum

HOWARD - William Edward "Bill" Crum, 64, of rural Howard, died Oct. 5, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Howard United Methodist Church. The Revs. Kibum Kim and George Gardner will officiate. Masonic services will be conducted by Mulvane Lodge 201, with military graveside services conducted by American Legion Carter-Rader Post 142, in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Bill E. Crum Memorial Scholarship Fund at West Elk High School. Contributions can be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Crum was born Aug. 31, 1934, in Mulvane, to Harold Frederick and Dorothy Marie (Sickler) Crum. He was raised on a farm west of Mulvane and graduated from Mulvane High School in 1953.

On June 30, 1956, he married Sylvia Ruth Justvig in Wichita.

After serving in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, he was employed at Beech Aircraft Co. and also worked as a bricklayer in Wichita. In the early 1970s he became a ranch manager for Packard Cattle Co. in Limon and Elbert, Colo. After spending five years in Colorado, the Crums bought a small ranch north of Howard where he raised cattle for 23 years.

Crum also trained and raced horses. In 1988 he became a steward at Eureka Downs and later worked for the Kansas Racing Commission as a horse steward and a judge for dog racing. In 1991 he became a correctional officer at the El Dorado Correctional Facility and continued there until his retirement in 1997.

He was a member of Mulvane Masonic Lodge 201, the Kansas Peace Officers Association and the American Quarter Horse Association.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Crum, Howard, two sons, Chip Crum, Howard, and Casey Crum, Pittsburg; a daughter, Kelly Davis, Sedan; his mother, Dorothy Crum, and a brother, Galen Crum, both of Mulvane; a sister, Lucretia Stetler, Wichita; and three grandchildren.

Ricky Marshall

WICHITA - Ricky J. Marshall, 34, of Wichita, died Oct. 6, 1998.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Cedar Creek Cemetery at Cedar Vale. Broadway Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.

Marshall was born Nov. 4, 1963, in Gravette, Ark., to William and Alice Joyce (Kennedy) Marshall. The family was originally from Cedar Vale.

Marshall was a shop foreman for Ray-Dor, James Ray Co.

Survivors include two brothers, William Marshall and Mike Marshall, both of Wichita.

Aurice Jones

WICHITA - Aurice M. Jones, 91, of Wichita, retired teacher, died Oct. 7, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Cochran Mortuary Chapel of the Roses. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Wilmot Cemetery. The Rev. Dale Kelley will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church, 445 N. Market, Wichita, KS 67202.

Jones was born Aug. 2, 1907, in Atlanta, to John E. and Anna (Young) Jones. She began her teaching career in 1927 in Cowley County. She taught in Augusta schools from 1931 to 1941 when she moved to Wichita and taught elementary students until her retirement in 1972.

Jones was a member of the First Christian Church, the Retired Teachers Association and Air Capitol Active People. She had been a Meals on Wheels and St. Francis Hospital volunteer.

Survivors include five nieces, Jean Seigle, Olathe, Elaine Allen, Springfield. Mo., Betty Parman, Arkansas City, Dorothy Fencil, Lawton, Okla., and Rosalee McCormick, Park Ridge, Ill.

Helen Peters

OXFORD - Helen Sarah Peters, 101, longtime Oxford resident, died Oct. 8, 1998, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Oxford United Methodist Church with Pastor Wayne Handle officiating. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Oxford Methodist Church and Riverview Manor.

Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Peters was born Nov. 6, 1896, near Udall to Erskine and Alta (Kimball) McKinlay. She attended schools at Fall River and Fredonia before the family returned to the Udall area in 1914. She attended Udall High School before graduating from Oxford High School.

After attending what is now Emporia State University, she taught elementary school for one year in Coldwater.

In 1920, she married Lucien Peters in Winfield, and they lived south of Oxford for many years. Her husband died in 1985, and she moved to Riverview Manor in 1994.

Peters was a homemaker and a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, the Oxford St. Patrick's Club and the Sumner County women's group of the Farm Bureau. In 1996, when she was 99 years old and still active, she was grand marshal of the Oxford Watermelon Feed parade.

Survivors include four sons, Eugene Peters, Wichita; Robert and Donald Peters, both of Bartlesville, Okla., and Richard Peters, Edmond, Okla.; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Kelly Naegele

Services for Kelly Kay Naegele were held Oct. 8, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated.

Gayle Walker sang "On Eagle's Wings," "Amazing Grace" and "The Lord's Prayer." Sandy Yount was the organist.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Casket bearers were Gary and John Utt, David Hoag, Mark and Brian Goodwin and Steve McCarville.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Myrl Dobbs

Myrl Dobbs, 61, of Burden, retired teacher and school administrator, died Oct. 8, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Burden First Baptist Church. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Stillwell City Cemetery, Stillwell, Okla. Friends may visit from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wheeler Funeral Home, Burden.

A memorial scholarship has been established with Central USD 462. Memorials may be made in care of the funeral home.

Dobbs was born Sept. 26, 1937, at Stillwell to Ganum and Hazel (Cole) Dobbs. He began his teaching and coaching career at Grenola High School in 1960. From 1972 to 1976, he was an administrator, teacher and coach in Lincoln, Ark., and from 1976 to 1995 he was a shop teacher and coach at Central High School, Burden.

In 1998, he married Susann Depew.

Dobbs was a member of the Kansas National Education Association, the Kansas Coaching Association and Burden First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Susann Dobbs, of Burden; two sons, Edward E. Dobbs of Burden and Myrl Dobbs of Pryor, Okla.; a daughter, Connie Tolleson of Conway, Ark.; four sisters, Margaret Guess of Albuquerque, N.M., and Viva Brown, Carol Parker and Sharon Robbins, all of Stilwell, Okla.; 11 grandchildren.

Evalena Coombes

Evalena Norma Coombes, 89, of 1501 Lynn, Winfield, died Oct. 8, 1998, at her home.

Private services will be held. AVisitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with the American Alzheimer's Association.

Coombes was born Oct. 31, 1908, at Geuda Springs to Frank and Nellie (Turpin) Vaughn. She attended Dexter schools and graduated from Dexter High School.

Coombes was employed as a bookkeeper for Anthonys Department Store. She then worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center as a psychiatric aide for 23 years before retiring in 1970.

After retiring, she moved to Ponca City, Okla., and lived there for 23 years. In 1995 she returned to Winfield.

Coombes was a member of the Business and Professional Women, Rebekah Lodge and Winfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and served as president of the VFW Auxiliary.

In Ponca City, she served a term of president of the American Legion Auxiliary and attended the Church of Christ.

Her husband, James Coombes, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Sue Anderson, Winfield; a sister, Ernestine Gray, Oklahoma; a grandson, Jackie Dean Anderson, Winfield; and three great-grandchildren.

Clarence Lister

HOWARD - Clarence Emil Lister, 96, of Howard, died Oct. 7, 1998, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Zimmerman Funeral Home with the Revs. Vern Wilkinson and Robin Haines officiating. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the Howard Twilight Manor Activity Fund.

Lister was born March 11, 1902, at Cedar Vale to Irvin and Lillie Mable (Orin) Lister. After graduating from Cedar Vale High School in 1924, he attended Pittsburg State Teachers College and taught school briefly.

On June 9, 1929, he married Pearl Opel Perry at Sedan. They owned and operated a farm north of Cedar Vale for a few years and later moved to a farm southwest of Moline.

Lister was employed at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office in Elk County for several years. In 1943, the Listers moved to Howard and purchased the Howard Locker Co. He retired from that business in 1967.

Pearl Lister died Aug. 1, 1979.

On May 4, 1980, he married Elizabeth Vaught Belford in Howard. She died April 4, 1990.

Lister was a member of the Kansas Meat Packers Association and the First Baptist Church of Howard.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Morris, a stepdaughter, Pat Beck, and a brother, Loren Lister, all of Howard; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
