Rena Crum

ARKANSAS CITY - Rena M. Crum, 89, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 10, 1998, at Presbyterian Health Care Unit.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home with burial in Tannehill Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army.

Crum was born March 7, 1909, in Winfield, to Henry Clifton and Mary (Milligan) Gottlob. She grew up in Beaver Township and attended Centennial School Distrist 4.

On July 16, 1938, she married James G. Crum in Hackney. After following construction work for several years, they moved to Winfield. In 1974 they moved to Arkansas City.

Her husband died Sept. 18, 1980.

Crum was a member of the First Baptist Church and a volunteer at Medicalodge East.

Survivors include a brother, Clyde Gottlob, Arkansas City, and several nieces and nephews.

Verena Ryan

ARKANSAS CITY - Verena Catherine Ryan, 87, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 10, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home with the Rev. Ser Khu Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Ryan was born Feb. 5, 1911, at Onaga, to George J. and Anna Agnes (Dulac) Weber. She attended schools in the Onaga area.

Claude A. Aubert and she were married in Wamego and lived in the Onaga area. He died in 1967.

In 1971 she married Harvey Ryan in Winfield, and they resided in Arkansas City. He preceded her in death in 1988.

Survivors include four sons, Gerald Aubert, Happy Camp, Calif., Orville "Ben" Aubert, Winfield, George Aubert, Topeka, and Duane Aubert, Wellington; a daughter, Verena Faye Deschner, Topeka; a sister, Mary Louise Taylor, Holton; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Nadine Fisher

Olive Nadine Fisher, 69, longtime Winfield resident, died Oct. 10, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service with burial in Tisdale Cemetery.

Visitation at the funeral home will be until 9 p.m. today and before the service Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the National Stroke Foundation.

Born March 14, 1929, near Tisdale, she was a daughter of Cleveland H. and Maude (Shellman) Bryant. She attended the Tisdale school before moving to the New Salem area at the age of 14.

She later moved to Winfield and was employed by Winfield Laundry and Cleaners and as a nurse's aide at Edgetown Manor.

In 1970 she married Glen Luke. He died May 18, 1991.

She had resided at Good Samaritan Village since December 1966.

She attended Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a son, Don Bryant, Winfield; a brother, Calvin Conway, Houston; a sister, Mary Bogner, Winfield; three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Hazel DeWitt

HOWARD - Hazel Margaret DeWitt, 89, of Howard, died Oct. 11, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home with the Rev. Kibum Kim officiating. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Howard Twilight Manor Activity Fund.

Born Aug. 16, 1909, in Elk County, she was a daughter of Andrew Harvey and Mary Lida (Andersen) Hubbell. She attended Cresco rural school and graduated from Howard High School in 1929.

On Jan. 16, 1934, she married Estil Everett DeWitt at Eureka. They lived near Severy until moving to Elk County in 1939. In 1960 the DeWitts bought a farm north of Howard and lived there until his death on Dec. 20, 1983. She moved to Howard in 1984.

DeWitt attended the United Brethren Church as a girl; was a member of Salem Baptist Church north of Howard for many years; and attended the Howard United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Eldon DeWitt, Gates, Okla., and Donnie DeWitt, Moline; two daughters, Sue Signer, Mound City, and Sherrell Tucker, Independence; two sisters, Opal Hurt, Howard, and Marjorie Burrow, Lawton, Okla.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Zaccaria

PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Dorothy Helen Zaccaria, 83, of Willowood Nursing Home, Pittsfield, longtime resident of Lee, Mass., died Oct. 9, 1998, at Henry Haywood Hospital in Gardner, Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Lee. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lee.

A memorial has been established with the Lee Visiting Nurses Association, High Street, Lee, MA 01238.

Zaccaria was born Dec. 15, 1914, to Salvatore and Gertrude "Bessie" (Wood) Daury in Waterbury, Conn. She attended Maloney Elementary School and Wilby High School in Waterbury. When her mother died in her junior year, she left school to care for her younger brothers and sister.

In 1933 she married Patsy Zaccaria in Waterbury.

In 1946, the Zaccarias became co-owners of Lee Supermarket. She worked in the supermarket during the 24 years it was in operation. After the store was sold in 1971, she worked at Nejaime's Supermarket in Lee, in the tax assessor's office in Lee and for many summers in the Lee Chamber of Commerce information booth.

Zaccaria was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Waterbury and St. Mary's Church in Lee. She was also a charter member and first president of Lee Kiwaniannes and served on the board of Lee Visiting Nurses Association.

The couple traveled extensively and vacationed in Florida for almost 20 years.

Her husband died Dec. 22, 1973.

Survivors include four daughters, Patricia Torres, Athens, Ohio, Madeleine Van Orman, Becket, Mass., Judith Zaccaria, Winfield, and Susan Vaughan, Mashpee, Mass.; two sisters, Florence Bianco, Lee, and Marie Daury, New York City; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bob Miller

Bob E. Miller, 78, of 607 E. 10th, Winfield, died Oct. 12, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 of Winfield.

Miller was born Feb. 20, 1920, at Guthrie, Okla., and attended schools in the Guthrie area. He graduated from Guthrie High School in 1938.

A veteran of World War II, he served as a radio technician with the U.S. Army in the Philippines and South Pacific theatre.

Miller returned to Guthrie in 1946 and moved to Winfield in 1948. He was employed in the avionics department at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita before beginning work at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. He retired from the maintenance department there in 1985 following 22 years of service.

He had resided at Good Samaritan Village since June.

Miller was a member of VFW Post 3544 and American Legion Post 10.

Survivors include his son, Bob Miller, Springdale, Ark.; and two grandchildren.

Thelma Irving

Thelma Irene Irving, 78, died Oct. 12, 1998, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Keith will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and Hospice Inc.

Irving was born Aug. 2, 1920, in Greenknoll, Colo., to Lucius W. and Marcia A. (Burnette) Cross. She attended schools at Ingalls and later lived in Gray and Finney counties.

She worked as a civilian truck driver at the air base in Garden City during World War II and later was a cook at restaurants in Garden City.

In 1939 she married Charles M. Killfoil. Her husband Leo Hawk, whom she married in 1946, died in 1954. Later that year she married Orval L. Mills. In 1983 she married Wilford Munro, and he preceded her in death in 1987. In 1992 she married Thomas Irving.

Irving resided at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City before moving to Walnut Hill Nursing Center in February 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Leo Ray Hawk and Larry K. Mills, both of Cherryville; four daughters, Marcia A. Mills, Winfield, Myrna K. Ramirez, Newkirk, Okla., Bertia M. Bruno, Tonkawa, Okla., and Evis A. Duchardt, Grand Marsh, Wis.; a brother, Eithel Cross, California; a sister, Elnor Johnson, Fort Dodge; 28 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

One son preceded her in death.

Helen Peters

OXFORD - Services for Helen Sarah Peters were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 12, 1998, at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Pastor Wayne Handle officiated.

Elaine Clark was the organist, and Frances DeVore and Mary Lee sang "Ivory Palaces" and "Saved By Grace."

Honorary casket bearers were DeVerne Alexander, Wallace Champeny, Wesley and Rick Totten, Art Johnson, Ken Buss and Dwight Holt.

Casket bearers were Scott, Timothy and Michael Peters, Ken Cook, Bob Fumagalli, Bob Burris, Buck Walsh and Ted Goike.

Burial was in Oxford Cemetery under the direction of Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home.
