Rock Olds

ARKANSAS CITY - Roscoe E. "Rock" Olds, 87, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 12, 1998, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

Olds was born June 26, 1911, at Beaumont, to George B. and Martha Jane (Axtell) Olds. He attended Beaumont schools.

On July 2, 1934, he married Mary Florine "Flo" James at Newton. They lived at Beaumont before moving to Arkansas City in 1940.

Olds was employed by Frisco Railroad and Weaver Electric before working as an electrician at Chilocco Indian School from 1960 until retiring in 1978.

Olds served with Company A, 55th Armored Infantry Battalion, in Europe during World War II.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a 30-year member of the Arkansas City Police Reserves and a 10-year member of the Cowley County Sheriff's Department Reserves.

Survivors include his wife, Flo Olds, Arkansas City; a daughter, Dorothy Truitt, Manhattan; a son, Danny E. Olds, Brighton, Colo.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Joan Durbin

MOLINE - Barbara Joan Durbin, 66, of Moline, died Oct. 11, 1998, at University Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Moline United Methodist Church. The Revs. Gerald Manley and Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Moline High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Durbin was born Oct. 16, 1931, at Longton, to Charles Wesley and Octa Lee (Higginbotham) Hainlin. She attended Longton and Moline schools and graduated from Moline High School in 1949.

On Dec. 5, 1948, she married Emera M. "Stub" Durbin at Moline. They owned and operated a farm north of Moline for many years.

Durbin was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from 1953 to 1994, retiring as postmaster at Longton. She then continued to operate Joan's Gifts from her home.

Durbin was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Moline United Methodist Church, American Postal Workers, Moline High School Alumni Association and Moline Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include two sons, Dan Durbin, Winfield, and Charles Durbin, Bartlesville, Okla.; two daughters, Pat Lanford, Bellevue, Neb., and Roberta Case, Park City; a sister, Bonnie Bynum, Independence; and four grandsons.

Naomi Bauer

HUDSON - Helen Naomi Bauer, 85, died Oct. 12, 1998, at her home in Hudson.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hudson. Pastor George Reddington will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Minnis Chapel of St. John.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Born Sept. 5, 1913, at Stafford, she was a daughter of E.O. and Nettie Pearl (DeSelms) Anderson. The family resided near Zenith and then at Hudson where she graduated from Hudson High School. She attended Emporia State Teachers College and taught school at Hudson.

On May 31, 1936, she married Chester E. Bauer in Hudson.

Bauer was a piano teacher for 55 years before retiring in 1988. In 1983 she received the outstanding teacher award from the Kansas Music Teachers Association.

Bauer was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ; a founding member of the Neighborhood Bible Study and Prayer Group; and a charter member of the Hudson IQ Study Club.

Survivors include her husband, Chet Bauer; a son, Thomas A. Bauer, Hutchinson; a daughter, Mary Lou Martin, Wichita, formerly of Winfield; a sister, Ernestine White, Denton, Texas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Helen Daggett

INDEPENDENCE - Helen Inez Daggett, 79, of Independence, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 12, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, Independence, and at 2 p.m. in Highland Cemetery, Winfield. The Rev. Jim Blocher will officiate.

Visitation at Potts Chapel will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials have been established with the Ronald McDonald House and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund.

Daggett was born Aug. 8, 1919, at Winfield, to Frank Thomas and Stella (Pratt) Hagan. After graduating from Winfield High School, she was employed by a Winfield insurance company and later worked in a tax office and at Kerr's.

On June 4, 1940, she married Lawrence R. Daggett at Klamath Falls, Ore. They moved to Winfield in 1947, Arkansas City in 1961 and Independence in 1970.

Daggett was a member of the First Baptist Church, Wednesday Study Club, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Dewlen-Dix Post 1186 Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Daggett, Independence; a son, Larry Daggett, Vicksburg, Miss.; a daughter, LaNita Boyd, Roswell, Ga.; a sister, Dorothy Dobbins, Winfield; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Nadine Fisher

Services for Olive Nadine Fisher were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 13, 1998, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Roderick A. Hathaway officiated.

Vocal selections included "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again."

Burial was in Tisdale Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Frank Barron, Butch Kelley, Marshall Martin, Ed Prouty and Raymond Warren.

Casket bearers were Kyle Bryant, Jeff, John and Paul Raymond Conway, Shawn Farney and Mark Riggs.

Margaret Luce

MIDLAND, Texas - Margaret Luce, 69, of Midland, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 11, 1998, at her home.

Luce was born July 17, 1929, in Winfield, to Robert and Mildred (O'Brian) Luce. She graduated from Winfield High School.

Luce was a district manager for Avon for many years before retiring and moving to Midland.

Survivors include an aunt and uncle, Pauline and Cleo Taylor, Sacramento, Calif., and cousins Jim and Bob Taylor.

A memorial service will be held later. Ellis Funeral Home of Midland is in charge of cremation.

Helen Tolles

ARKANSAS CITY - Mabel Helen Tolles, 87, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 13, 1998, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Revs. Wade Graber and David Stanley will officiate, and burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.

Tolles was born July 28, 1911, at Caney, to Joseph Gerome and Ida Josephine (Boyd) Wommack. The family moved to Arkansas City in 1922, and she graduated from Arkansas City High School and Arkansas City Junior College. She received a bachelor's degree from Pittsburg State University.

On July 25, 1937, she married Samuel Austin Tolles in Anthony, and they farmed near Arkansas City for 55 years. After losing their home to the 1991 tornado, they moved into Arkansas City. Her husband died Jan. 29, 1994.

During World War II, Tolles worked as a chief procurement clerk at Strother Field. She taught in several country schools for many years and worked as a substitute teacher until retiring in 1968.

Tolles was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher and had also been a deaconess.

Survivors include a son, Keith Tolles, Arkansas City; a daughter, Judith Admire, Ithaca, Mich.; a sister, Mercedes Bair, Corpus Christi, Texas; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Marilyn E. Tolles, preceded her in death.

Agnes Brown

LEON - Agnes Ellen Brown, 85, of Leon, died Oct. 13, 1998, at Sandpiper Bay Health and Retirement Center, Wichita.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Leon Christian Church, with burial in Leon Cemetery. Carlson Funeral Home of El Dorado is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association.

Brown was born Nov. 6, 1912, at Pittsburg, to DeLafayette and Ellen Alfaretta (Wort) Smith. She was a third-generation member of the Salvation Army and was commissioned an officer in 1934.

On Nov. 30, 1940, she married Theodore R. Brown at Pittsburg. He preceded her in death May 24, 1997.

Brown was a homemaker and resident of Leon for many years before moving to Wichita a year and a half ago.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Ted Brown, Hackney, and David Brown, Ballwin, Mo.; two daughters, Barbara McKee, Wichita, and Kathy Glaves, Leon; three sisters, Pearl Smith, Wichita, Martha Fitzgerald, Hood River, Ore., and Ruth Wade, Oklahoma City; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Rebekah Ann, preceded her in death.

Charles Kerr

Dr. Charles D. Kerr, 78, of 111 N. Park, Winfield, died Oct. 14, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. Military interment rites will be conducted in Highland Cemetery.

Visitation at Miles Funeral Service will be until 9 p.m. today and until noon Friday.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church and the Cowley County Community College Endowment Fund.

Kerr was born April 14, 1920, near Mahaska, to Robert and Gladys (Morey) Kerr. He attended Centerdale rural school and graduated from Mahaska Rural High School in 1937.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in England, France, Belgium and Germany.

On Dec. 28, 1949, he married Mary Jane Graham at Mahaska.

Kerr received his bachelor's degree in social science from the College of Emporia in 1951 and his master's degree in school administration at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia in 1954.

Kerr was an elementary principal, teacher and coach at Latham and later elementary principal and then superintendent at Peabody. The family moved to Fayetteville, Ark., in 1961, and Kerr completed his doctorate in education at the University of Arkansas in 1963.

In 1962 the Kerrs moved to Winfield, where he was a professor of teacher education at Southwestern College and also chairman of the social sciences division. In 1970 he became program director at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and wrote the original grant for the Foster Grandparent Program. He retired from WSH&TC in 1985.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Kerr served as ruling elder for many years and had been a commissioner to both the Presbytery and General Assembly.

Kerr served on the Cowley County Community College Board of Trustees for 22 years, and the Charles D. Kerr Business and Technology Building there was named in his honor.

Kerr was a member of the Winfield Kiwanis Club for 27 years and served as president, lieutenant governor and Kansas Kiwanis Foundation board member.

He had been chairman and a board member of the local American Red Cross chapter as well as its military service contact. He was a charter organization representative for the Presbyterian Church Boy Scout troop and was given the Winfield First Citizen Award in June 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kerr, Winfield; a son, Duane Kerr, Oxford; two daughters, Suzanne Johnson and Mary Topper, both of Winfield; two brothers, John Kerr, Mahaska, and Dean Kerr, Hot Springs Village, Ark.; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A son, Steven Charles Kerr, preceded him in death.
