Faye Quinn

Services for Faye Irene Carver Quinn, 94, who died Oct. 15, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 19 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Art Wilson officiated.

Special music included "How Great Thou Art" and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."

Burial was at 2:30 p.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation.

Bill Drake

DEXTER - Bill Ernest Drake, 49, longtime Dexter rancher, died Oct. 19, 1998, at his ranch southwest of Dexter.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Dexter Christian Church. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield until 9 tonight and until noon Thursday.

Memorials have been established with the Dexter Christian Church and the Industrial Arts Department of Dexter High School. Contributions can be made through the church, school or funeral home.

Drake was born Aug. 16, 1949, in Winfield, to Robert J. and Barbara (Wilson) Drake. He was raised and educated in the Dexter community and graduated from Dexter High School in 1967. As a young man, he began his career in farming and ranching.

On April 10, 1971, he married Bonnie S. Young. They made their home on their ranch near Dexter throughout their marriage.

Drake was employed by Rundle Electric and Rubbermaid Corp. for a number of years. At the time of his death, he had been a maintenance electrician at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita for nine years.

A member of the Dexter Christian Church, he was a 25-year member of the Dexter Masonic Lodge and a member of the board of Grouse-Silver Creek Joint District 92.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Drake, and a son, Matt Drake, both of Dexter; a daughter, Megan Morris, Arkansas City; his mother and stepfather, Barbara and Dale Streeter, Dexter; two brothers, Jack Drake, Dexter, and Harry Drake, Winfield; three stepbrothers, Hardy Streeter and Michael Streeter, both of Arkansas City, and Kevin Streeter, Wichita; and two stepsisters, Brenda Russell, Sterling, and Jennifer Edwards, Dexter.

John Tibbs

John Edward Tibbs, 72, retired Udall teacher, of 1112 E. 11th, Winfield, died Oct. 21, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Military ceremonies will be held in Akron Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and until noon Saturday.

Memorials have been established with the LifeLine Program at William Newton Memorial Hospital and the Winfield Community Food Pantry. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Tibbs was born June 5, 1926, in Alva, Okla., to Lester Ellis and Mildred M. (Real) Tibbs. He was raised and educated in the Alva and Kiowa areas and graduated from Kiowa High School in 1944.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in 1944 and 1945.

He returned to Kansas and married Lela B. Ashley on Jan. 2, 1946, in Kiowa. The couple farmed for 33 years before moving to the Winfield area in 1959.

Tibbs received his bachelor's degree in education from Kansas State University in 1966 and was awarded his master's degree in education in 1979. He served as high school vocational agriculture, shop and electronics teacher in the Udall school system for 19 years before retiring in 1982.

A member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield, he was also affiliated with Kansas and national education associations.

Survivors include his wife, Lela Tibbs, Winfield, and a daughter, Barbara Tibbs, Chanute.

Carol Elliott

ARKANSAS CITY - Elva Carolina "Carol" Elliott, 84, retired Rodeo Meats worker, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 20, 1998, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery west of Winfield. Pastor Mark McDonald will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the Friends Church of Arkansas City. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Elliott was born May 27, 1914, in rural Winfield, to Albert L. and Viola B. (Bonewell) Biddle. She was raised and educated in Colorado where her parents homesteaded and in the Tisdale community.

She married Claude Bradshaw in 1940 in Arkansas City. He was killed in action in Italy during World War II.

In 1951 she married Claude Elliott in Newkirk, Okla. He died in 1984.

Elliott was a ham boner for Rodeo Meats for 31 years.

She was a charter member of the Friends Church in Arkansas City and a member of the Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Shelton-Beaty Post 18 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Charles Bradshaw, Winfield; three granddaughters, two stepgrandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Frances Barger

HOWARD Ñ Frances Mary Barger, 84, of Howard, died Oct. 19, 1998, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Revs. Kibum Kim and Chuck Evans will officiate. Burial will be in Twin Grove Cemetery at Severy.
Memorials have been established with the Howard Senior Center and the West Elk Endowment Fund. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
Barger was born June 18, 1914, in Kelso, Wash., to Frank and Mary Peterson. The family moved to Kansas when she was two years old. After her father died when she was nine, the family moved to Enid, Okla., where she attended school through eighth grade. In 1927 the family moved to Howard where she graduated from Howard High School in 1931. She attended a year of normal training and taught school from 1933 to 1937.
On June 19, 1937, she married Jesse William Barger in Howard. They made their home on a farm near Howard for a short time before moving into town. The Bargers owned and operated Barger & Son Lumber Co. in Howard until retiring in 1978.
After her husband died March 3, 1986, Barger remained in Howard until moving to Eureka. She later returned to Howard and became a resident of Howard Twilight Manor.
She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Howard and recently became a member of the Howard United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Herron, Walnut, Calif., and Rosalie Messenger, Terra Alta, W.Va.; two sisters, Ruth Beckner, Neodesha, and Helen Harris, Americus; and four grandchildren.

Ray Morris

Ray Alan Morris, 54, of Winfield, a self-employed master plumber, died Oct. 21, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Wellington. The Rev. Bill Fulton will officiate.
Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home in Wellington from 5 to 9 tonight.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc., the Arthritis Foundation and Grace Episcopal Church.
Morris was born Sept. 8, 1944, in Wellington, to Boyd L. and Lavonne (Cann) Morris.
A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include two daughters, Holly Morris, Wichita, and Angela Kame, Mounds, Okla.; a brother, Dennis Morris, Fort Myers, Fla.; two sisters, Judith Embick, San Diego, and Ruthmary Norman, San Antonio, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Bill Drake

DEXTER Ñ Services for Bill Ernest Drake, 49, who died Oct. 19, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 22 in the First Christian Church in Dexter. The Rev. Norman Reeves officiated. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.
Special music selections included "Go Rest High on That Mountain," performed by Vince Gill, and "Farther Along," performed by Kelly Dillner.
Honorary casket bearers were Bobby Brenner, Dick Gottlob, Wendell Hoyt, Wayne Lacey, Merle Peters, Kent Radcliffe and Dale Streeter.
Casket bearers were Bill Fatout, A.P. Greer, Brian Kuntz, Bob and Max Mattingly and Willard Morris Jr.
Memorials have been established with the Dexter Christian Church and the Dexter High School Industrial Arts Department.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Susan Prater

ARKANSAS CITY - Susan R. Prater, 46, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 23, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Harry H. Cunningham will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Prater was born Dec. 7, 1951, in San Pedro, Calif., to Gifford and Delta (Wheeler) Kaupang. She graduated from San Pedro High School in 1970 and later attended Jarbar Junior College.

Shortly after moving to Arkansas City in 1973, she went to work at the Mode-O-Day Store, then worked at Kmart for seven years. She was assistant manager for Love's Country Store and for the last nine years had worked at Spencer-Ralston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254.

On Jan. 6, 1996, she married David Prater in Arkansas City.

She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of both the VFW post and Shelton Beaty American Legion Post 18.

Survivors include her husband, David Prater, a son, John Bahruth, and a daughter, Lisa Bahruth, all of Arkansas City; and two brothers, Allan Kaupang, Edwardsville, Ill., and Stephen Kaupang, Diamond Bar, Calif.

Theo Peninger-Allen

HOWARD - Theo Grace Peninger-Allen, 96, of Howard Twilight Manor, formerly of Burden, died Oct. 24, 1998, at the nursing home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burden United Methodist Church. The Revs. Sheila Ratzlaff and Julie Craft will officiate. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Howard Twilight Manor and Burden United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Peninger-Allen was born Sept. 4, 1902, at Wingate, east of Atlanta, to Reason Leslie and Bertha Christina (Savage) Moore. In 1906 the family moved to Oklahoma but returned to the Burden area a few years later. She attended Grand Prairie rural school and grew up in the Burden community. After her mother died in 1911, she helped her father care for the family of five children.

On Sept. 15, 1921, she married Ray Everett Peninger in Winfield. They lived on a farm in the Mount Vernon community, northeast of Burden, until purchasing a house in town in 1942. The marriage ended several years later.

On July 11, 1955, she married Fred Marshall Allen. He died in 1965.

Peninger-Allen remained a Burden resident until 1982. She lived with her children until moving to Howard Twilight Manor in 1988.

She was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, John Peninger, Derby; three daughters, Nina Kullhem, Palisade, Minn., Bertha Light, Howard, and Lela Bannon, Burden; 23 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
