Ruth Samms

Services for Ruth Irene Samms, 82, who died Oct. 27, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 29 at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gary White officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Vocal music included recordings of "Over the Sunset Mountains," performed by the Statler Brothers, and "How Great Thou Art," performed by Andy Griffith.

Casket bearers were Harold Butterfield, Don Campbell, Phillip and Tim Haynes, Scott and Steven Johnson, Todd Westenfeld and Ed Young.

Ellen Stone

WAUNETA - Services for Ellen Belle Stone, 73, who died Oct. 26, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 29 in the Wauneta United Methodist Church. The Revs. Larry Bowyer and Janet Baxter officiated. Burial was in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Shirley Brown was the organist. Denice Acosta sang "Ain't No Grace" and "Sweet Hour of Prayer."

A memorial has been established with the Wauneta United Methodist Church.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.

Maude Steele

MULVANE - E. Maude Steele, 90, of Mulvane, died Oct. 28, 1998, in Mulvane.

Private services will be held in Mulvane Cemetery. Senter-Smith Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Conservation District Education Fund.

Steele was born Aug. 16, 1908, in Blue Hill, Neb. She was a retired Boeing employee.

Survivors include a brother, Marvin Paugh, Wichita; two nieces, Connie Jimeson and Linda Sue Stoltz, both of Udall; and seven nephews.

Jack Robison

The Rev. William T. "Jack" Robison, 82, of 302 Park St., Winfield, died Oct. 28, 1998 at Winfield Rest Haven.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church.

In lieu of floral offerings, a memorial has been established with the Methodist Church in Bolivia. Contributions may be made through the church or the funeral home.

Robison was born May 5, 1916, in Franklin, Tenn., to William T. Robison Sr. and Lillian Mai (Wilson) Robison. When his father died a few months before his birth, his mother moved to the Robison farm near Franklin where he was raised. He graduated from Battleground Academy High School in Franklin.

He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. For several years he taught mathematics in the Battleground Academy before beginning seminary training

A veteran of World War II, he served as a radar operator with the U.S. Army Air Force in Saipan and Tinian in the South Pacific Theatre. Following discharge, he returned to school at Candler Theological Seminary of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., graduating in 1947. Following ordination in the Methodist Church, he began his missionary career in Bolivia, South America, in the village of Ancoraimes on the shore of Lake Titicaca.

He met Barbara C. Carttar in Bolivia. The couple married Dec. 14, 1949, in La Paz, Bolivia. During his 33 years' service in Bolivia, Robison served in many roles, primarily with the Aymara Native Americans, as teacher, supervisor of rural schools, adult literacy director, pastor, district superintendent, district treasurer, counselor and encourager of new congregations, as well as husband and father. He was admired by family and colleagues for his mastery of the Aymara language in addition to Spanish.

The Robisons returned to the United States in 1981 to make their home in Winfield, and he retired from his position with the United Methodist Church in 1983.

Having grown up in a family of athletes, he enjoyed many sports, and participated for 60 years before becoming an avid spectator. His interests included his family and church, where he participated in the Covenant Church school class, United Methodist Men, the Winfield Community Food Pantry and driving the church van, teaching youth and philanthropy.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Robison, Winfield; three sons, Nathan Robison, La Paz, Bolivia, C. Price Robison, Palatka, Fla., and Daniel Robison, Rurrenabaque, Bolivia; two daughters, Ann T. Robison, Arlington, Va., and Helena Robison Peacock, Santa Cruz, Bolivia; a sister, Helen Wadsworth, Ripley, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

Hazel Kempton

Graveside services for Hazel E. Kempton, 92, who died Oct. 26, 1998, were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 30, 1998, at Grand Prairie Cemetery in Burden. The Rev. Art Hays officiated.

Special vocal music included "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden."

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.

Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.

Mary Clark

GEUDA SPRINGS - Mary Maurita Clark, 76, of Geuda Springs, died Oct. 30, 1998, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.

A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Arkansas City. The Revs. Ser Khu Wilson and Francis Cox will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Winfield.

A memorial has been established with Riverview Manor.

Clark was born Feb. 5, 1922, to Dan Patrick and Mary Francis "May" (Olivier) McCorgary in Wichita. She attended schools in Wichita and Arkansas City and graduated in 1941.

On Nov. 15, 1944, she married Fred P. Clark in Arkansas City. They made their home near Arkansas City the past 50 years.

Clark worked for Beech Aircraft during World War II and later was a bookkeeper for area sale barns. She also worked for Rodeo Meats, Arkansas City Memorial Hospital and Albright's Title and Trust in Newkirk, Okla., before retiring.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar Society, the Rodeoettes and Sunny Side Sunbeams.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Clark, Geuda Springs; a daughter, Jane Davis, Houston; a sister, Mary A. Schmidt, Arkansas City; two brothers, John McCorgary, Arkansas City, and Donnie McCorgary, Palo Alto, Calif.; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A son, Fred Clark Jr., and a daughter, Rita Ann Clark, preceded her in death.

James Trent

Services for James E. Trent, 64, who died Oct. 27, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 31 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastors Marvin Schoonover and Gary Brown officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Vocal music selections were "One Day at a Tme," "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden."

Casket bearers were Gene Oathout, Floyd Pennington, Chuck Reel, Stanley Robertson, Don Trent and Jim Trent.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.

Ronald Blevins

HUTCHINSON - Ronald L. Blevins, 80, a resident of Wesley Towers in Hutchinson, formerly of Udall and Wellington, died Oct. 31, 1998, in Hutchinson Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Udall United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Udall Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and until noon Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Blevins was born Feb. 14, 1918, at Violet Hill, Ark., to Willie and Zelma (Cooper) Blevins. He was raised and educated in the Violet Hill area and in 1939 graduated from Violet Hill High School. That year he was a member of the Arkansas State Championship Baseball Team.

A World War II veteran, he served four years with the U.S. Army as a technical sergeant in the Philippines and the South Pacific theatre.

On March 1, 1941, he married Juanita Gaston. After the war, he returned to Arkansas, and the couple lived and farmed there before moving to Udall in 1951.

Blevins was employed by Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita for 19 years and later worked for the Wellington public schools as a custodian. He retired in 1983. He was later employed as a custodian at the Wellington Public Library.

His wife died Jan. 15, 1995.

Blevins was a member of the Udall United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Larry Blevins, Hutchinson; a daughter, Lulita Hopkins, Udall; four brothers, Orval Blevins, Davenport, Iowa, Pete Blevins, Mountain Home, Ark., Lee Roy Blevins, Neosho, Mo., and Hollis Blevins, Pierce City, Mo.; two sisters, Veda Pogue, Houston, and Vera Bunn, Aurora, Mo.; four grandchildren, a stepgranddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Jack Robison

A memorial service for William T. "Jack" Robison was held at 2 p.m. Nov. 2, 1998, at Grace United Methodist Church. The Revs. Jerre Nolte and Vern Livengood officiated.

Vocalist was Dr. James Schuppener. Organist was Louise Schuppener.

A memorial has been established with the Methodist Church in Bolivia. Contributions can be made through Miles Funeral Service or the church.

Rozell Smith

ARKANSAS CITY - Rozell E. Smith, 87, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 2, 1998, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Harry H. Cunningham will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery near Geuda Springs.

A memorial has been established with the Good Samaritan Fund of Presbyterian Manor. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.

Rozell was born Dec. 28, 1910, near Geuda Springs, to John William and Mary Ruth (Coggins) Kimes. She lived in Geuda Springs until moving to Arkansas City at age 17 to attend high school. In the early 1930s, she worked in the Sweet Shop of the Osage Hotel.

On Sept. 11, 1931, she married Lloyd Alden Smith in Pawhuska, Okla. They lived in Arkansas City. He died Oct. 31, 1995.

Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Sunshine Club.

Survivors include a son, Tom Smith, Chapman; a daughter, Patsy Brookey, Wichita; a sister, June Keene, Arkansas City; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
