Wallace Biby

EUREKA - Wallace Eugene Biby, 74, of Eureka, died at the home of his son, in Emporia, on Nov. 16, 1998.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the New Life Assembly of God Church in Eureka. Pastor Mike Krager will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Americus Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with New Life Assembly of God Church. Contributions may be made through the church or Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home in Eureka.

Biby was born March 15, 1924, in Wichita, to Richard and Goldie Viola (Branson) Biby. He was raised and educated in Wichita.

On Sept. 8, 1943, he married Bertha Maydean Biby in Wichita.

They lived in Wichita where Mr. Biby worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier. Following his retirement from the post office, he worked a year at Cessna Aircraft as a custodian and drove a bus for handicapped children. In 1987 the Bibys moved to Eureka.

Mr. Biby was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine and attended New Life Assembly of God Church.

Mrs. Biby died Nov. 8, 1998. A daughter, Melinda Goates, also preceded Mr. Biby in death.

Survivors include seven sons, Dean Biby and Warren Biby, both of Tucson, Ariz., Chauncey Biby, Eureka, Marcus Biby, El Dorado, Russell Biby, Emporia, Richard Biby, Wichita, and Sam Biby, Winfield; a daughter, Clara Gaw, Olympia, Wash.; two brothers, Charles Biby and Marlow Biby, and a sister, Maebelle Mabe, all of Wichita; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Donald Shafer

DEXTER - Donald W. Shafer, 78, of Dexter, died Nov. 16, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Dexter Christian Church. The Rev. Norman Reeves will officiate. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home in Burden from 1 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with the Dexter schools.

Shafer was born April 10, 1920, in Hoosher in Cowley County, to Robert F. and Minnie (Rush) Shafer. He graduated from Dexter High School, attended junior college in Arkansas City and joined the National Guard.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He took part in the Normandy invasion, the Battle of Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge. In 1997 Shafer was honored by the people of France for his participation in the liberation of France with a gold medallion. He was also a holder of a Bronze Star and numerous other medals.

On Jan. 19, 1944, he married Bernadine Tunison in Arkansas City.

Shafer worked for several railroads before retiring as a train master for the Trona Railroad in Trona, Calif. He also worked for the Missouri Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads.

From 1970 through 1993 he pursued his love of horse racing, owning horses that raced successfully in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Idaho. He was a lifetime member of the Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association, a member of the Dexter Masonic Lodge 156 for 54 years and Winfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 and American Legion Post 10.

Survivors include his wife, Bernadine Shafer, Dexter; two daughters, Linda Lewis, Dexter, and Judith McGill, Salem, Ore.; three brothers, Cecil Dale Shafer, Topeka, Jack Willard Shafer, Wellington, and John L. Shafer, Dexter; two sisters, Leota Martin, Dexter, and Melva Ruth Hobbs, Arkansas City; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ira Thomas

MOLINE - Ira Lee Thomas, 72, of Moline, died Nov. 15, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services were held at 2 p.m Nov. 15, 1998, at the Moline United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Boyer officiated. Burial was in Moline Cemetery.

Shae Watkins was the organist. The congregation sang "Because He Lives" and "When We All Get to Heaven."

Casket bearers were Clarence Carter, Gene Corle, Chris Clyde, Merle Hey, Dennis Hogan, Fred Osborn, Rob Shore, Gene Williams and Mike Wilson.

Memorials have been established with the Moline United Methodist Church and the New Beginnings Workshop of Moline. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Thomas was born Oct. 6, 1926, in Wellington, to Alex and Ada (Hines) Thomas. He attended Pink rural school near Wellington, as well as Wellington schools, before moving with his family to the Moline community. He graduated from Moline High School in 1944.

On Sept. 20, 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at Shepard Field, Texas, and served as a parachute rigger while stationed in Santa Anna, Calif. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 16, 1945.

On Dec. 19, 1946, he married Shirley Jean Porter at their current home in Moline.

Thomas was employed at Concrete Materials in Sedan until becoming parts manager at Ames Chevrolet in Moline where he worked for 17 years. In 1964 he became associated with O&B Oil Co. in Elk Falls and continued in that business until he retired in 1985.

Thomas was a board member of the Moline Community Rural Health Clinic and was instrumental in constructing the clinic building. He was also active in the Shalom Workshop and residence in Moline.

He was former mayor and councilman of Moline, former president of the board of the Southeast Kansas Economic Development District and a former member of the Moline School Board. He was a longtime member of Ferguson-Speese American Legion Post 388, Hope Lodge 155 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Ladonia Chapter 243 Order of Eastern Star and the Moline United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Thomas, Moline; two sons, Raymond Thomas, Topeka, and Tyson Porter, Round Rock, Texas; a daughter, Teressa Kirkpatrick, Longton; and three grandchildren.

Floyd McCollim

MOLINE - Floyd Ernest "Mac" McCollim, 94, of Moline, died Nov. 15, 1998, at his home in Moline.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Moline Christian Church. The Rev. Ted Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Moline Christian Church and Hospice Inc. of Wichita. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

McCollim was born Sept. 16, 1904, in Ricon, N.M., to Matt Mathew and Ida Alice (Wood) McCollim. He lived his early childhood in New Mexico and California and attended school in Winfield where he lived with an aunt and uncle.

On June 5, 1926, he married Jenettie Josephine Foust in Winfield.

He was farmed before his marriage and later worked in the Texas oil fields before returning to Kansas.

In December 1927 he opened his first automobile garage in Moline and continued in that profession until his retirement in 1976. McCollim was the co-owner of the Square Deal Garage in Moline during most of his life.

He was a deacon at the Moline Christian Church where he was baptized in 1938.

Survivors include his wife, Jenettie McCollim, Moline; a son, Eugene McCollim, Jefferson, Texas; two daughters, Evelyn Grover, Moline and Iola Fulgham, Huntsville, Texas; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

John Wise

GIG HARBOR, Wash. - John Sherman Wise, 63, of Gig Harbor, Wash., former Winfield area resident, died Nov. 8, 1998, at Gig Harbor.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Linwood Church of the Nazarene in Wichita. Private family burial services will be held later at Highland Cemetery in Winfield.

Miles Funeral Service has charge of local arrangements.

Wise was born in Udall and raised and educated in Rock, Oxford and Winfield. He was a retired supervisor and equipment operator for the city of Los Angeles, Calif.

Survivors include his wife, Clifta Wise, Gig Harbor; a son, Michael Sherman, Littlerock, Calif.; a daughter, Sandra Kane, Gig Harbor; two brothers, Bob Sherman and Jack Sherman, both of Wichita; four sisters, Carroll Briley, Wanita Schmitt, Pamela Larson and Dixie Oatsvall, all of Wichita; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jack Seacat

Jack L. Seacat, 70, farmer and rancher, of Route 5, Winfield, died Nov. 18, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Rose Valley Cemetery east of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight and until noon on Friday.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Jerry Seacat Memorial Scholarship Fund at Dexter High School and the American Heart Association. Contributions can be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Seacat was born Jan. 26, 1928, at Deer Creek, Okla., to Pete and Mary (McWilliams) Seacat. Raised and educated in the Deer Creek area, he attended Deer Creek High School.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army testing winter and cold-weather equipment in Alaska. Following discharge, he returned to Oklahoma where he began work with the Blackwell Zinc Smelter.

On Sept. 23, 1948, he married Violet J. Six in Blackwell. They resided in Blackwell until moving to a ranch near Dexter in 1962. The Seacats had resided in the Dexter and Winfield areas for 36 years.

He was a member of American Legion Post 10 in Winfield.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Seacat, and a daughter, Mary Katherine Seacat Dent, both of Winfield; two brothers, Duaine Seacat and Richard Seacat, and a sister, Virginia Jefferies, all of Blackwell, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Twin sons preceded him in death, Terry L. Seacat in 1954 and Jerry P. Seacat in 1993.

Charles Moore

Services for Charles Russell "Rusty" Moore, 61, who died Nov. 13, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 at Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Quentin Bennett and Marvin Ewertt officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Music include recordings of "A Walk in the Irish Rain" and "Band of Angels," performed by California Traveler, and "Who Will Sing One Song for Me?" and "The Old Rugged Cross," performed by The New Tradition.

American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military committal ceremonies.

Honorary casket bearers were Elmer Madison, Brandon, Tyler and Gary Moore, Dewey Rhodd and Don Sumner.

Casket bearers were Chad and Don Buell, Brad Hey, Mardi McMinn, Lynn Stewart and Eddie Veatch.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the American Cancer Society.

Violet Speer

EL DORADO - Violet L. Speer, 85, formerly of Dexter, died Nov. 19, 1998, at Beverly Health Care Center in El Dorado.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home in Winfield from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Home Health Care of Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.

Speer was born April 13, 1913, near Dexter, to Albert and Mabel (Fisher) Rowe.

On Jan. 23, 1936, she married Howard O. Speer in Winfield. The Speers farmed until 1990 when they retired and moved to El Dorado. Her husband died July 13, 1992.

Survivors include a son, Albert Speer, Dexter; two daughters, Judy Ginder, El Dorado, and Islene Roessler, Bentonville, Ark.; a brother, Albert Rowe, Sedan; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Burnley White

Services for Dr. R. Burnley White, 73, who died Nov. 14, 1998, were held at 1 p.m. Nov. 18 at First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Fred Houston officiated.

Private inurnment services will take place in Highland Cemetery.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist, and Judy Johnson was the pianist. Katie Humpert sang and Spirit of New Orleans performed "Peace! Be Still." Spirit also performed "Amazing Grace," which the congregation sang. Dave Warbinton, accompanied by Judy Johnson, sang "The Old Rugged Cross."

Other music included "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" and "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."

Memorials have been established with First United Methodist Church and the USD 465 Foundation. Contributions can be made through the church or Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.
