Herbert Pickens

Herbert C. Pickens, 94, formerly of Burden, died Dec. 4, 1998, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Burden First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff will officiate. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Burden First United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home of Burden from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

Pickens was born Jan. 6, 1904, in Burden, to Joseph B. and Julia (Hughes) Pickens. He graduated from Burden High School in 1921.

From 19221 to 1941 he worked as a barber. During World War II he sold beauty supplies. In 1945 he built in Burden the Arctic Locker which he owned and operated until he retired in 1975.

On Nov. 10, 1944, he married Margaret Elizabeth Varns in Burden. She died April 17, 1992.

He was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Burden Community Club and organized the Burden Alumni Association in 1937.

Survivors include two brothers, William Pickens, San Bernadino, Calif., and Charles Pickens, Weslaco, Texas; and a sister, Reva Reynolds, Wichita.

Raymond Potter

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Raymond Leo "Ray" Potter, 70, of Bartlesville, Okla., died Dec. 3, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Grenola Christian Church. The Rev. Wallace Wartick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola.

A memorial has been established with Grenola Christian Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Potter was born Aug. 24, 1928, in Grenola, to Henry Leo and Vina V. (McKain) Potter. He graduated from Grenola High School and grew to manhood in the Grenola community.

On May 27, 1954, he married Frances Josephine "Pat" Jarvis in Ridgeland, S.C. They lived in Orlando, Fla., and Oklahoma City before moving to Spokane, Wash., on Oct. 1, 1957. The Potters moved to Tucson, Ariz., on Sept. 3, 1973, where they remained until Mr. Potter's retirement in 1975.

He served in the U.S. Air Force until his retirement and attained the rank of master sergeant. After retirement, the Potters moved to Independence, then to Glendale, Ariz., on July 1, 1978. Mrs. Potter died Nov. 28, 1994. After her death, Mr. Potter moved to Bartlesville.

A hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Good Sam Club.

Survivors include two brothers, Delbert Potter, Bartlesville, and Robert Potter, Winfield, and two sisters, Corinne Potter, Arkansas City, and Jean Miller, Chanute.

Barney Ross

Retired U.S. Army Major Basil E. "Barney" Ross, 71, of Winfield, died Dec. 5, 1998, at his home.

Services will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Fred Houston will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City.

Memorials have been established with First United Methodist Church and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City.

Ross was born March 13, 1927, in West Plains, Mo., to Charles Sylvester and Phoebe Ellen (Collins) Ross. He was raised and educated in West Plains. He attended country schools and West Plains High School until 1943 when he joined the U.S. Navy. After World War II, he moved to the Arkansas City-Winfield area in 1947.

In Arkansas City, he worked as a cab driver for the Yellow Cab Co. which was owned by his future in-laws, Joe and Blanche Thomas. He returned to West Plains later in 1947 and graduated from high school in 1948.

On Dec. 19, 1948, he married Betty Joan Thomas in Winfield.

In 1950 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and in 1951 transferred to the U.S. Army to attend Officer Cadet School. He was commissioned in September 1952.

Ross served in Korea in 1954 and returned in 1957 as a general's aide. In 1967 and 1968 he served in Vietnam. He retired from active duty at Fort Leavenworth in August 1968. During his tour of duty, Ross received many commendations, including the Silver Star.

While Ross was in the Army, he and his family lived on various military installations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

After retiring from the service, Ross owned and operated a Phillips 66 station at the corner of Ninth and Loomis in Winfield for several years. He then worked for Winfield Bus Service for many years and later owned part of VIP Charters out of Great Bend. In 1987 he went to work at the Winfield Correctional Facility and was promoted to the Wichita Work Release Center. He retired in 1993.

Ross was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 10 of Winfield and Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Arkansas City. He was Past Master of Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free and Accepted Mason, Past High Priest of Winfield Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, Past Illustrious Master of the Saint John's Council of Winfield, Past Commander of the Winfield Commandry and Past Commander of the Knights Templar.

He was a member of the Knight York Cross of Honor, Abou Saad Panama Canal Zone Shrine and the San Juan, Puerto Rico, Consistory, Past Patron of Queen City Chapter 138 Order of Eastern Star, and Grand Representative to Scotland in Kansas Grand Chapter of Kansas Order of Eastern Star. He had also been president of the Cowley County Counsel on Aging, a member of the South Central Kansas Area Council on Aging and a member of the Memorial Lawn Cemetery Board.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Ross, Winfield; two sons, Thomas Wayne Ross, Oxford, and David Michael Ross, Manhattan; a daughter, Kathleen Valerie Ferris, Arkansas City; two brothers, Charles S. Ross Jr., and Leslie Wayne Ross, and a sister, Shirley Helen Mask, all of West Plains, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.

Russell Snell

ELLINWOOD - Russell C. Snell, 79, of Ellinwood, died Dec. 5, 1998, in Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Bahr will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Redbud Cemetery in Udall.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with St. Joseph's School Endowment fund and the school roof fund.

Kimple Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Snell was born April 3, 1919, in Udall, to Vernant Clark and Gladys (Greenland) Snell. He graduated from Udall High School in 1937.

On May 11, 1940, he married Helen Grace Preston in Winfield. She died Feb. 29, 1996.

A member of the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II, he received a Purple Heart for his service in the Battle of the Bulge.

In 1954 he founded Snell Custom Harvesting.

Survivors include a son, Thomas C. Snell, Ellinwood; three daughters, Jeanne McGimsey, Palmdale, Calif., Janet Spangenberg, El Dorado, and Nancy Sydney, Green Bay, Wis.; a sister, Betty Clements, Grandview, Mo.; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Wilma Crismas

SEVERY - Wilma R. Crismas, 82, longtime resident of Severy, died Dec. 4, 1998, at the Fredonia Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Crismas was born May 22, 1916, in Geuda Springs, to Clarence "C.B." and Frances Edna (Tesh) Westwood. She attended grade school in Union Center and graduated from Howard High School in 1935.

On Dec. 24, 1936, she married Alva L. Crismas in Sedan. He died Jan. 29, 1982, in Sedan, where they made their home.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Lend-A-Hand Quilting Club. In the 1930s she joined the Church of Christ in Howard.

Survivors include three sons, Clinton Crismas, Garnett, Dale Crismas, Independence, and Jim Crismas, Humboldt; a daughter, Frances Talmentes, Chicago, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Oleta Shields

DERBY - Oleta Ola Shields, 75, of Derby, died Dec. 4, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Derby. The Rev. Dr. Warren Smith will officiate. Burial will be in El Paso Cemetery.

Friends may call at Smith Mortuary until 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with First Presbyterian Church, SCCS Hospice of Derby and the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Shields was born May 12, 1923, in Sofia, N.M. She was a retired supervisor at USD 260.

Survivors include her husband, William E. Shields, Derby; two sons, Kent Shields, Neodesha, and Bob Shields, Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Carol Armstrong, Austin, Texas; three brothers, Homer Bair, Augusta, Orville Bair, Burden, and Eugene Bair, Winfield; four sisters, Lenora Henderson, Wichita, Eula Mae Martin, Dexter, Vivian Shaver, Douglass, and Wanda Mackey, Burden; three grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.

M.E. Jenkins

The Rev. Millard Ellsworth "M.E." Jenkins, 80, of 922 E. 19th, Winfield, died Dec. 7, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with the American Kidney Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Jenkins was born on Jan. 8, 1918, in Milford, Neb., to Millard Dewey and Grayce (Heskett) Jenkins. When he was two years old, the family moved to Lincoln, Neb., where he was raised and educated. He attended Lincoln public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1935.

As a young man, he went to Oklahoma City where he was first employed in a construction company. He was employed by the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. from 1937 to 1952.

In 1937 he married Thelma L. Smith in Oklahoma City.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Marine Corps Fifth Division and was in the battle of Iwo Jima.

In 1943 he was licensed for the ministry and while a licensed minister, served as associate pastor under three different pastors and as an interim pastor of the Britton Baptist Church in Oklahoma City for six months.

He was ordained in 1952 and entered ministry full time in 1953. He pastored churches in the Hackney community, Altamont, Topeka, Cherryvale and Oxford.

On Nov. 7, 1968, he married Harriet S. Muret in Winfield. They resided in Oxford and Winfield throughout their marriage.

Jenkins was awarded the honor of Pastor Emeritus in the First Baptist Church in Oxford in 1983. Following retirement, he served churches in Abilene, Winfield and Arkansas City as interim pastor. He also served on the staff of the First Baptist Church of Winfield as Minister of Visitation for 10 years.

During his active ministry, he served in numerous denominational capacities as a member of the General Board of the American Baptist Churches of the Central Region for eight years, the Executive Committee for five years and the Camp and Assembly Commission for nine years.

He was also active in community affairs. He was an honorary member of the Oxford Masonic Lodge and a Past Master of an Oklahoma Lodge and was affiliated with the Lions Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winfield.

Jenkins was the first Honorary Letterman named by the Oxford Booster Club. Years after moving away from Oxford, he was named Oxford's Best by the Oxford Bank in January 1998.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet Jenkins, Winfield; one son, Daniel Jenkins, Johnson City, Tenn.; a daughter, Beverly Morgan, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepson, Joe Muret, and a stepdaughter, Lee Kelly, both of Winfield; 11 grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A son, David Jenkins, and a daughter, Shirley Jenkins, preceded him in death.
