Francis Hayward

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Rev. Francis H. Hayward, 89, formerly pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Winfield, died Dec. 24, 1998, in San Antonio.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Madison Square Presbyterian Church, San Antonio. Interment will be in Ottawa. Porter Loring Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with Ottawa University, the Alzheimer's Association and the United Negro College Fund. Contributions can be sent to B.H. Hayward, 5511 San Pedro, Suite 204, San Antonio, Texas, 78212.

Hayward was born Sept. 24, 1909, at Atwood, to Affee and Frank Hayward. He graduated from high school in Oakley in 1926; from Ottawa University in 1930 and from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1933.

In 1935 he married E. Luise Blunk of Ottawa.

Hayward served the Presbyterian Church (USA) as an ordained minister for over 60 years. From 1939 to 1963 he was pastor for Presbyterian congregations in Vassar, Medicine Lodge, Mount Hope, Winfield and Prairie Village and also Kansas City, Mo. During this period he was elected moderator of both the Kansas Presbytery and the synod. He initiated and directed two successful church capital campaigns and played a key role in the purchase of camp properties in Kansas for Presbyterian youth and family camps and conferences.

In 1963, Hayward and his wife became fraternal workers for the Presbyterian Church (USA) and for the next 13 years served the Church of Scotland in Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad. Hayward's work included serving remote villages in the bush country, recruiting and training lay pastors and negotiating with the struggling reformed churches of the West Indies to share their meager resources.

Following his retirement from active ministry in 1976, Hayward served several interim pastorates in the Midwest before settling in San Antonio where he served as a pastoral associate at Madison Square Presbyterian Church and as chaplain for San Pedro Manor Nursing Home. He volunteered for many civic organizations and tutored first- and second-graders in Title I elementary schools in San Antonio for six years.

Hayward was a leader of numerous interdenominational organizations and endeavors. He was interested in politics and was instrumental in starting Acoholics Anonymous chapters in several communities.

Survivors include his wife, E. Luise Hayward, and a son, Bart Hayward, both of San Antonio; a daughter, Judy Conners, Wichita; a brother, Hollis Hayward, Liverpool, N.Y.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Iris McCrabb

AUBURN, Wash. - Iris J. McCrabb, 65, of Auburn, formerly of Winfield and Oxford, died Dec. 24, 1998, at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Price-Helton Chapel in Auburn followed by burial in Auburn Mountainview Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute in Seattle.

McCrabb was born Dec. 31, 1932 in Winfield, to Herbert and Mattie McDaniel. She grew up in the Oxford area and graduated form Oxford High School.

On Dec. 3, 1951, she married Bill McCrabb, and they had resided in Auburn for more than 40 years. She had worked as a retail salesperson.

McCrabb was a member of Chapter FS of P.E.O., Auburn Garden Club, Tillicum Chrysanthemum Society, Lakota Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Auburn Art Guild.

Survivors include her husband, Bill McCrabb, Auburn; a daughter, Kathleen McCrabb, Redmond, Wash.; two sons, Michael McCrabb and Kevin McCrabb, both of Sumner, Wash.; a brother, Howard McDaniel, Arkansas City; three sisters, LaJune Bales, Oxford, Doris Sisson, Winfield, and Illene Hutchins, Geuda Springs; and three granddaughters. .

Mildred Dees

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Mildred Rusch Dees, 87, of New Port Richey, died Dec. 26, 1998, at Forest Oaks Care Center, Spring Hill, Fla.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, New Port Richey. Burial will be in Florida Hills Memorial Gardens, Brooksville, Fla.

Dees was a native of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., and moved to New Port Richey 24 years ago from Mount Pleasant, Mich. She was a retired teacher and an administrator for the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.

Dees was a member and former elder, trustee and deacon of Westminister Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the church's women's association, P.E.O. International Sisterhood and Alpha Chi Omega.

Survivors include a son, Rusch Dees, Spring Hill, Fla.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Edith Bostic

OXFORD - Edith Bertha Bostic, 89, of Oxford, died Dec. 25, 1998, at Riverview Manor.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Ginn officiating. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Oxford Christian Church.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the service Tuesday.

Bostic was born March 1, 1909, in Morgan, Texas, to George and Elizabeth (Cope) Martin. The family moved to the Oxford area when she was a baby. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1928.

On Aug. 1, 1928, she married Roy Bostic in Wellington. They farmed near Oxford until moving into town in 1954. He died May 17, 1984.

Bostic was a member of the Oxford Christian Church.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Meek, and a niece, Annie Lois Knapp, both of Oxford; and five nephews.

Roberta Hetherington

Roberta M. Hetherington, 74, of 1907 Fuller, Winfield, died Dec. 26, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with First Baptist Church and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made at the church or funeral home.

Hetherington was born April 5, 1924, in Winfield, to Robert Henry and Jessie Mildred (Becker) Cunningham. She was raised and educated in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1942. As a young woman, she was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Winfield.

On March 10, 1946, she married Homer A. Hetherington in Winfield where they resided throughout their marriage. Her husband died March 5, 1982.

Hetherington worked for the city of Winfield for a number of years and was employed at First National Bank from 1967 to 1986. In 1980 she opened her own business, the Happy Stitches Shop, which operated until 1993.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and affiliated with the Winfield Soroptimist Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Bob Hetherington, Wichita; a daughter, Janet Henson, Dickinson, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Elsie Marshall

CEDAR VALE - Elsie M. Marshall, 91, longtime resident of Cedar Vale, died Dec. 26, 1998, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. Burial was in Ozro Falls Cemetery. Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with Cedar Vale United Methodist Church and the Cedar Vale Community Hospital Activity Fund.

Marshall was born Dec. 24, 1907, in Nashville, Ill., to John and Emma (Timmons) Lawhorn.

On Aug. 1, 1923, she married Clarence Marshall in Pawhuska, Okla. He died March 16, 1988.

A Cedar Vale resident since her marriage, she had worked at several jobs outside the home in addition to being a homemaker.

Marshall was a member of the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Marshall, Cedar Vale; a sister, Clara Witters, Wichita; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Eugene Marshall, also preceded her in death.

Christene Feste

Christene "Chris" Feste, 62, of 210 W. 10th, Winfield, died Dec. 26, 1998, at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grandview United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett will officiate.

Memorials have been established with the Winfield Community Food Pantry and the ALS Association. Contributions can be made through Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Feste was born Feb. 18, 1936, in Pawhuska, Okla., to Everett and Walsie (Leathers) Turney. She graduated from Colorado Springs (Colo.) High School.

On Aug. 21, 1954, she married Burt Feste in Colorado Springs. They lived in Greeley, Monument and Fountain, all in Colorado, before moving to Cambridge in 1971. They moved to Burden and then to Winfield in 1979.

Feste worked at Binney & Smith in Winfield for 25 years before taking medical leave in May 1996.

She was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church, several bowling leagues and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Burt Feste, Winfield; two sons, Guy Feste, Paradise, Texas, and Gene Feste, Arkansas City; two daughters, Tina Lister and the Rev. Connie Wooldridge, both of Winfield; two brothers, Gale Turney, Edmond, Okla., and Gene Turney, Oklahoma City; and 11 grandchildren.

An infant daughter, Carolyn, preceded her in death.
