Lois Preston
BURLEY, Wash. - Lois Binyon Preston, 82, of Burley, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 21, 1998, at her home.
Private services were held Dec. 23 in Burley.
Preston was born April 11, 1916, in Montrose County, Colo., to Loid and Edna (Myers) Binyon. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1934 and attended Wichita Business College.
In 1937 she moved to San Francisco, where she married William J. Preston on June 14, 1941. They moved to Seattle in 1964.
She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Winfield.
Survivors include her husband, William Preston, Burley; a daughter, Susan Darling, Sumner, Wash.; a sister, Mazie Elrod, Winfield; and three grandchildren.
A son, James Preston, died June 21, 1984.
Nellie Utt
ARKANSAS CITY - Nellie Mildred Utt, 90, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 27, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the North Summit Street Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Parker Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home until 8 tonight.
Memorials have been established with the Church of Christ and Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home or church.
Utt was born Oct. 10, 1908, in Winfield, to Albert and Anna Lucinda (Woodard) Gilmore. She was raised in the Silverdale area.
On June 11, 1927, she married Orville Drew Utt in Winfield. The family moved to Arkansas City from Silverdale 36 years ago. Her husband died April 28, 1983.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sons, Orval LeRoy Utt, Arkansas City, and Lester Leo Utt, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; five daughters, Bonnie Slack, Wichita, Gail Lathers, South Haven, and Louise Stuart, Norma Clark and Dorothy Owen, all of Arkansas City; 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Roger McElroy
WICHITA - Roger C. McElroy, 53, of Wichita, died Dec. 28, 1998, at his home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight.
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
McElroy was born March 21, 1945, in Winfield, to Carl and Madelaine (Marten) McElroy. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1963.
McElroy owned and operated R&F Construction Co. in Wichita.
Survivors include his mother, Madelaine McElroy, Winfield; a son, Mark McElroy, Plano, Texas; a daughter, Lisa Harris, Shell Knob, Mo.; two brothers, Larry McElroy, Mulvane, and Tom McElroy, Wichita; a sister, Mary Wacker, Winfield; and two grandchildren.
Charles Cope
Charles Warren Cope, 72, of 1123 Alexander, Winfield, died Dec. 28, 1998, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Private burial will take place in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.
A memorial fund has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home Benefit Fund in care of the funeral home.
Cope was born May 3, 1925, on a farm near Mullinville, to Donald E. and Lillian Cordella (Lewis) Cope. He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1943 and from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree in horticulture and ornamental floriculture in 1950.
On Aug. 10, 1947, Cope married Alice Mahree Meade in Hays.
Cope lived several places before settling in Winfield in 1950. While living here, he was in partnership with Jack Fruits and George Lancaster operating Winfield Floral.
He was active in several organizations, including Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, Rotary and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Cope, Winfield; a daughter, Deborah Barker, Ottawa; a brother, Harland Cope, Hawaii; a sister, Opal Kilgore, Mullinville; and a granddaughter.
Barney Burch
DEXTER - Byron Harold "Barney" Burch, 64, formerly of Longton, died Dec. 27, 1998, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Oak Valley Cemetery. The Rev. Robin Haines will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Longton Lions Club. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Burch was born March 31, 1934, in Ithaca, N.Y., to Loren William and Mary Etta (Anspach) Burch. Burch attended school in Mexico and Germany before graduating from high school in Pittsford, Mich., in 1952.
Burch enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and was stationed in Iceland and Greenland as well as the United States before his discharge in 1956.
In 1967 he married Leona Lorena Cady in Lake Charles, La., and they made their home in Louisiana for several years. This marriage ended in 1986.
He had been a resident of Longton since 1978 and moved to Grouse Valley Manor in 1985.
Burch served as a counselor with the Boy Scouts of America for several years. He was a member of the World Wide Church of God.
Survivors include two sons, Tony Burch, Lafayette, La., and Christopher Burch, Lake Charles, La.; a daughter, Evelyn Burch, Fairmont, Minn.; two brothers, Loren Burch Jr., Lockport, Ill., and the Rev. James Burch, Eugene, Ore.; a sister, Marilyn Harkey, Longton; and two grandsons.
Claude Boren
HOWARD - Claude Samuel Boren, 94, longtime resident of Severy, died Dec. 28, 1998, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Severy United Methodist Church. The Revs. Kibum Kim and Tony Pameticky will officiate. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery
north of Howard.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. of Wichita. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Boren was born Dec. 10, 1904, west of Climax, to Benjamin Allen and May (Holmes) Boren. He attended Para D'Sheen rural school and grew up near Climax.
On Oct. 11, 1925, he married Grace May Preston in Howard. They made their home in the Severy and Howard area throughout their marriage. She preceded him in death.
Boren was employed by the Kansas Department of Transportation for more than 12 years before retiring in 1970. He moved from Severy to Howard Twilight Manor in January 1998.
Survivors include his caregiver, Opal Whittaker, Severy, and her three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and two friends, Jesse Barr and Senaida Pineda, both of Severy.
Elsie Marshall
CEDAR VALE - Services for Elsie M. Marshall, 91, who died Dec. 26, 1998, were held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 29 in Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Bowyer officiated. Burial was in Ozro Falls Cemetery.
Shirley Brown was the organist. Mark Johnson sang "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and "Where the Roses Never Fade."
Casket bearers were Don Grams, Lance and Chad Hopkins, Bill Campbell, Mick Myers and Bob Bailey.
Memorials have been established with the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church and Cedar Vale Community Hospital Activity Fund.
Wheeler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
