Bernice Murray

TAMPA, Fla. - Bernice Lorene Murray, 90, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 19, 1998, at Fairway Oaks Nursing Center in Tampa.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time and after the service at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established with Fairway Oaks Nursing Center, 13806 N. 46th St., Tampa, FL 33613. Contributions can also be made through the funeral home.

Murray was born Dec. 10, 1908, in Winfield, to Warren and May Iva (Beach) Teter. She graduated from Protection High School in 1926.

On Sept. 17, 1928, she married Gordon H. Murray in Perryton, Okla. They lived in Winfield while he was a Linotype operator for the Winfield Courier. He died Feb. 8, 1944.

After his death, Murray worked as a bookkeeper at Southwestern College. She continued her career and lived in several other communities, including Collingswood, N.J., Wichita, Seattle, Colorado Springs, Boulder Colo., and Nashua, N.H., before settling in Tampa in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Warren A. Murray, Redmond, Wash.; a daughter, Wanda M. Ashley, Tampa, Fla.; three sisters, Myrna Conrod, Winfield, and Maxine Hart and Velma Smith, both of Derby; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

John Sprey

ST. PAUL - John J. Sprey, 73, of St. Paul, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 30, 1998, at his home after a brief illness.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. John Zich will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be later in St. Francis Cemetery.

Friends may call at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in St. Paul after 1 p.m. Friday. The Rosary will be recited there at 7 p.m. Friday. Viewing of the body will be concluded after the Rosary.

Sprey grew up and attended schools near Wellington. He was employed as a truck driver in construction.

A veteran of World War II, he was a member of George L. Hendricks Post 102 of the American Legion in Erie.

On Sept. 27, 1953, he married Vesta L. Miller in Winfield. They lived in Winfield until 1955 when they moved to Nebraska, then to Colorado before returning to Winfield. In 1962 they moved to St. Paul.

His wife died Sept. 4, 1989. A son, Marc Sprey, died in September 1998.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Tiffany Sprey, Longmont, Colo.

Roberta Hetherington

Services for Roberta M. Hetherington, 74, who died Dec. 26, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 31 at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Warren Smith officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Organist was Marilyn Buffum. Special music was ÒAmazing Grace,Ó ÒThe Old Rugged CrossÓ and ÒBeautiful Garden of Prayer.Ó

Casket bearers were Harold Cook, Lloyd Craig, Don Fox, Stephen Larson, Keith Leake and Ron Pray.

Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church and the American Diabetes Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Lucetta Musson

ARKANSAS CITY - Lucetta Maxine Musson, 79, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 1, 1999, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care and Rehabilitation Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Guy Rendoff will officiate. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

Musson was born May 16, 1919, in Barnsdall, Okla., to John D. and Lillie (Luellen) Copeland. The family lived in the Caney area until moving to Arkansas City in the 1930s. She graduated from Arkansas City High School.

In September 1939 she married Justin Hiram "Jim" Musson in Bartlesville, Okla. They farmed in West Bolton Township near Arkansas City until moving to town in 1976.

Musson had been a member of the Cladder Club.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Musson, Arkansas City; six sons, Gary Musson, Wichita, and J.L. "Jim" Musson, Jeff Musson, Steve Musson, Michael Musson and Mitch Musson, all of Arkansas City; three sisters, Virgie Kannard, Bartlesville, Fern Chastain, Caney, and Ruth Huffster, Novato, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Robert Heins

WICHITA - Robert R. Heins, 64, formerly of Sedan, died Dec. 31, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale. Chaplain Avelino T. Baguyos will officiate. Burial will be in Round Mound Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

Heins was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Osage County, Okla., to George and Frances (Eberhard) Heins. He graduated from Sedan High School.

On Sept. 1, 1957, he married Joyce Cole in Iola. They later divorced.

Heins served in the U.S. Army. After being discharged, he worked as an oil pumper for Atlantic Richfield. He was also a self-employed horse trainer and rancher.

While living in Gate, Okla., he served on the school board.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Miller, Gate, Okla., and Sara Heins, Forgan, Okla.; two sisters, Wilma Calder, Arkansas City, and Mary Lea Barnes, Wichita; his companion, Ruth Burkhart, Burrton; and one grandson.

Cecilia Oliver

Cecilia C. Oliver, 75, died Jan. 2, 1999, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday and until noon Wednesday.

Born Oct. 23, 1923, at Junction City, Oliver was a daughter of Clifford and Ruby (Prothro) Oliver.

She resided at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for a number of years and lived at the former Focus Development Center in Winfield before moving to Walnut Hill Nursing Center in 1997.

She was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include a brother, Jerome Oliver, Torrence, Calif.; a sister, Marie Hayes, Independence, Mo.; and her friend and guardian, Maxine Collins, Winfield.

Lucille Grant

Lucille Grant, 74, of 1716 Poplar, Winfield, died Jan. 2, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Rick Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been establishede with the American Heart Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home

Grant was born Aug. 3, 1924, at Blackwell, Okla., to Ralph O. and Ruth P. (Phillips) Brown. She was raised in Blackwell and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1943.

She began employment with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in 1944 and retired in 1978, following 34 years of service as an operator and central office clerk.

On July 7, 1946, she married Carl Benjamin in Blackwell. They resided in Winfield throughout their marriage. He died June 26, 1979.

On May 8, 1982, she married Wayne L. Grant, and they resided in Winfield.

A former member of the Blackwell Christian Church, she was a member of First United Methodist Church in Winfield. She was also affiliated with the Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneers Organization.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Grant, Winfield; a son, Dennis C. Benjamin, Wichita; a stepson, Larry Grant, Arkansas City; a stepdaughter, Shirley Spengler, Ingalls; a brother, Bill Brown, Sapulpa, Okla.; a sister, Patsy Gates, Edmond, Okla.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Betty Allen

ISSAQUAH, Wash. - Betty M. Allen, 72, former resident of Dexter and Winfield, died Dec. 31, 1998, at a nursing center in Issaquah.

Services were held Jan. 5 in Green Funeral Home Chapel in Kirkland, Wash.

Local services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

Allen was born Sept. 1, 1926, at Dexter, to Joseph Hugh and Amanda Elizabeth (Radcliff) Henderson. Raised and educated in Dexter, she graduated from Dexter High School in 1944.

On May 10, 1947, she married William Loring Allen in Wichita, and they resided in Kirkland, Wash., for 47 years. He died May 10, 1990.

Allen resided in Winfield for three years prior to returning to Washington in August 1997 to be near her children and grandchildren.

She was a longtime member of the Dexter chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include two sons, William Randall Allen and Mark Joseph Allen, both of Kirkland, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Don Mohlstrom

WICHITA - The Rev. Don Mohlstrom, 61, of Wichita, College Hill United Methodist Church minister of membership development, died Jan. 2, 1999.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at College Hill United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. in New Salem Cemetery. Downing & Lahey Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the College Hill United Methodist Church, 2930 E. First St., Wichita, KS 67214.

Mohlstrom was born Jan. 10, 1937, in McPherson, to Carl Raymond and Madeline (McCann) Mohlstrom. He formerly lived and worked in Riverside, Calif.

Survivors include his wife, Nianne (Nichols) Mohlstrom, Wichita; a son, Eric Mohlstrom, Mission Viejo, Calif.; two daughters, Donanne Kasikci, Brentwood, Calif., and Carla Mohlstrom, Wichita; and a brother, Dean Mohlstrom, Dallas.
