Wilma Weyrauch
BURDEN - Wilma Beatrice Kill Weyrauch, 87, of Burden, formerly of Moline and Elk Falls, died Jan. 12, 1999, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline. The Rev. Edward J. Steinberger will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery
in Moline.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Weyrauch was born Aug. 20, 1911, in Elk Falls, to Simon William and Nellie Augusta (Clough) Ritchards. She graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1929 and earned her teaching certificate from Pittsburg State Teachers College. She taught at Border rural school southeast of Elk Falls for several years.
On Nov. 11, 1932, she married Fred Alexander Kill in Moline, and they lived in the Elk Falls community. A homemaker, she became Elk County Register of Deeds in 1959 and continued in that position until her retirement in 1977.
After Mr. Kill died on Dec. 13, 1965, she moved from Elk Falls to Moline. On April 26, 1975, she married John Weyrauch in Moline. He died Dec. 28, 1984.
Mrs. Weyrauch had resided in Moline until the past few years when ill health caused her to live with her children. She had been living in Burden with a son at the time of her death.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Kill II, Burden, and John Kill, Haysville; two daughters, Ruth Poteete, Niotaze, and Teresa Bliel, Nixa, Mo.; two brothers, John Ritchards, Lancaster, Calif., and William Ritchards, Winfield; a sister, Dorothy Kent, Eureka; 27 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.
A son, Richard Kill, preceded her in death.
Alice Koepcke
MULVANE - Alice Berniece Koepcke, 73, of Mulvane, died Jan. 8, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita after a long illness.
Private services have been held. Broadway Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Koepcke was born April 27, 1925, in Mafield, Texas, to Virginia and Carl Brogdon. She attended public schools in El Dorado.
On June 2, 1946, she married Douglas Koepcke of Junction City.
A homemaker, she had been employed for a time at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita.
Koepcke was a member of the Mulvane United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Douglas Koepcke, and a son, Wayne Koepcke, both of Mulvane; a daughter, Karen Johnson, Winfield; a brother, Gaines Brogdon, Fresno, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Rebecca Hernandez
WELLINGTON - Rebecca Hernandez, 77, of Wellington, retired St. Luke's Hospital employee, died Jan. 13, 1999.
A vigil and Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. today at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Sumner Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include four sons, Alex Tapia, Joe Tapia, Robert Tapia and Ursulo Tapia Jr., all of Wellington; five daughters, Julia Tapia, Winfield, Charlotte Torres, Wellington, Esther Botello, Wichita, Gloria Huck, Branch, Ark., and Mary Rios, Junction, Texas; two brothers, Jay Abasolo and Magdaleno Abasolo, and a sister, Lola Aguilar, all of Wellington; 25 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
Glenn Stevens
DOUGLASS - Glenn Stevens, 76, of Douglass, co-owner of Stevens Lumber Yard, died Jan. 14, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church.
Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
A memorial has been established with the Douglass First Christian Church.
Stevens was born in Garrison, Mo., and at an early age moved to Kansas with his parents.
During World War II, he served as a flight engineer for the Army Air Force in the South Pacific.
Stevens managed a lumber yard in Augusta before moving to Douglass. He and his wife owned Stevens Lumber Yard.
He was a member of the Douglass City Council and the First Christian Church where he served as a deacon and elder.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Stevens, Douglass; a son, Michael Stevens, Stilwell; a daughter, Janice Scaffidi, Douglass; two sisters, Bernita Mark, Augusta, and Cleone Richards, Hennessy, Okla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Leonard Defore
Leonard E. Defore, 84, of 1205 Country Club Rd., Winfield, died Jan. 14, 1999, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Defore was born May 27, 1914, on a farm near Atlanta to Dan and Chloie Elizabeth Bannon Defore. His family moved to the Udall area when he was a child, and he received his early education in Udall area rural schools. He graduated from Udall High School in 1932 and worked in farming as a young man.
On April 2, 1933, he married Fern Thompson at Carthage, Mo. The couple lived and worked in the Udall area for 58 years. Defore retired from Mobil Oil Co. as bulk agent on April 23, 1973, after 37 years of service.
The couple moved to Winfield in 1973.
Defore was a former member of the Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and Odd Fellows Lodge, all at Belle Plaine.
Survivors include his wife, Fern Defore, of Winfield; a brother, Dean Defore of Winfield; a granddaughter and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter.
Hazel Smith
WELLINGTON - Hazel C. Smith, 70, of Wellington, retired food service provider for USD 353, died Jan. 14, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Kendale D. Finley officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home from 6 to 9 tonight and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials have been established with the Purdue House and the Arthritis Foundation. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Smith was born Dec. 3, 1928, in Shidler, Okla., to Benjamin and Elsie Kates Potts.
On Aug. 18, 1945, she married Wilbur Wade Smith at Columbus.
Smith was a member of First Christian Church and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary in Arkansas City.
Survivors include her husband, Wilbur Smith Sr., of Wellington; a son, Wilbur Smith Jr. of Wellington; four daughters, Pat Pruitt of Augusta; Lynda Redd of Buhler, Wanda Cathey of Watauga, Texas, and Barbara Perrin of Arkansas City; three sisters, Eula Jane Holiday of Mustang, Okla., Clara Betty Wilson of Neosho, Mo., and Mary Edna Oaks of Bentonville, Ark.; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
DeVerne Alexander
OXFORD - DeVerne M. Alexander, 73, of Oxford, died Jan. 17, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oxford United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Service until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with Oxford High School for a scholarship fund.
Alexander was born Aug. 23, 1925, in Winfield, to Melvin and Laurel Mary (Peters) Alexander. He was raised in the Oxford area and graduated from Oxford High School in 1943.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.
On April 4, 1947, he married Margaret Mary Pantell in Long Beach, Calif. They moved to Wichita and farmed in the Greenwich area until 1955 when they moved to Ismay, Mont. They moved to Oxford in 1964.
Alexander was a hog farmer for many years.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Oxford Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Consistory of Wichita, Midian Shrine of Wichita, Sumner County Shrine Club, Oxford Lions Club, Oxford Boosters Club, Oxford American Legion and Winfield Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Alexander, and a son, Craig Alexander, both of Oxford; two daughters, Ramona Tener, Mesa, Ariz., and Laurel Ann Snide, Wichita; a sister, Erma Berrie, Oxford; and seven grandchildren.
David Allen
David L. Allen, 73, of Winfield, died Jan. 17, 1999, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. The Rev. Rick Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. The Winfield American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts will perform military honors.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Allen was born June 3, 1925, at Miami, Okla., to James E. and Anna (Murfin) Allen.
On March 5, 1960, he married Celestine (Gaiti) Dunn in Winfield. He had lived in Winfield for 40 years and had been employed at Binney & Smith as a warehouseman.
Allen was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active in Boy Scouts of America, serving as a scoutmaster for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Celestine Allen, Winfield; a son, David Allen, Wichita; a stepson, Robert Dunn, and a stepdaughter, Helene Lynn, both of Winfield; two brothers, James Allen, Grandville, N.D., and Raymond Allen, Burke, Va.; three sisters, Peggy Cavaness, Cherryvale, Dorothy Clark, Everett, Wash., and Hildard Robinson, Paradise, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
