Ellis Overman

BLACKWELL, Okla. - Ellis Gordon Overman, 73, of Blackwell, died Jan. 18, 1999, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Ponca City.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prairie Chapel Methodist Church in Ponca City. The Rev. Don Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Chapel Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Scott Overman, Bryan Overman, Jay Tripp, Doug Miller, Blaine Spengler and Curtis Boyer.

A memorial has been established with Prairie Chapel Methodist Church, c/o Roger Allen, 2281 E. Tower Road, Ponca City, OK 74604.

Overman was born Aug. 2, 1925, on a farm east of Blackwell, to Herbert L. and Cora H. (Sawyer) Overman He grew up in the Blackwell area and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1943.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in Okinawa and Korea. Following his discharge, he returned to the Blackwell area and farmed with his father.

On June 2, 1946, he married Willa Mae Frisch in Blackwell. They moved to a farm northwest of Ponca City. Along with farming, Overman was engaged in oil well pumping.

He was a member of the Prairie Chapel Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Farm Bureau. He was a 50-year member of the Western Grange.

Survivors include his wife, Willa Mae Overman, and a son, Harlan Overman, both of Ponca City; two daughters, Sharon Saulmon, Oklahoma City, and Marcura Overman, Ponca City; a sister, Marquita Spengler, Winfield; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Erylene Reynolds

SEDAN - Erylene Elizabeth Reynolds, 79, formerly of Moline, died Jan. 17, 1999, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Moline Christian Church. The Rev. John Foust will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.

A memorial has been established with the Moline Christian Church. Contributions can be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Reynolds was born Oct. 16, 1919, near Oil Hill, to Earl B. and Florence May (Adams) Agnew. At an early age she moved with her family to Wichita, where she graduated from East High School in 1938.

On May 4, 1941, she married Lee John Williams in McPherson. They later divorced.

On Aug. 20, 1970, she married Rufus Ford "Doc" Reynolds in Wichita. He died April 9, 1987.

Reynolds lived in Wichita and Moline for most of her life. She worked with Mr. Williams in the operation of their service station in Wichita and was employed in concession stands and as a real estate salesperson for several years. She also worked as a nutritionist and was a nutrition assistant at the Sedgwick County Extension Office for 11 years.

Reynolds was a member of the First Church of the Brethren in Wichita for many years and later became a member of the Moline Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert Williams, and a stepson, Donald Reynolds, both of Wichita; a daughter, Sherry Cook, Sedan; a stepdaughter, Charlene Leonard, Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother, Robert Agnew, Wichita; four grandchildren, 13 stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.

A daughter, Linda May Williams, died in infancy.

Irene Sutton

Irene V. Sutton, 77, homemaker, of 1702 E. Seventh, Winfield, died Jan. 16, 1999, at the home of her son in Tyro.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Longton Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Sutton was born Feb. 8, 1921, at Longton, to Harry A. and Loraine D. (Hale) Painter. She was raised and educated in the Longton area.

On April 10, 1936, she married Orville M. Sutton. Her father, a justice of the peace, officiated at the marriage at the family home in Longton.

The couple made their first home in Longton, then lived on farms in Elk and Montgomery counties for many years. Sutton worked as a cook for several restaurants in Elk City and Wichita.

Her husband died Nov. 2, 1968.

Sutton moved to Winfield in 1979. She worked as a cook for several restaurants and for the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include five sons, Victor Sutton, Gladstone, Mo., Michael Sutton, Tyro, Paul "Pat" Sutton, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Delbert Sutton and Gordon Sutton, both of Winfield; two daughters, Elizabeth Dalton, Haysville, and Peggy Barber, Burden; a sister, May Stiles, Wichita; 39 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Three daughters, Doris Crigger, Barbara Sutton and Judith Byerly, preceded her in death.

Marie Jensen

BEAUMONT, Texas - Marie Brant Young Jensen, 101, of Beaumont, died Jan. 19, 1999, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Oddfellows Cemetery in Ponca City, under the direction of Broussard's Mortuary, Beaumont.

A native of Longton, Jensen formerly resided in Ponca City and Winfield. She had lived in Beaumont for the past six years.

Survivors include four granddaughters, five grandsons, 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Leonard Defore

Services for Leonard E. Defore, 84, who died Jan. 14, 1999, were held at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Special vocal music included "How Great Thou Art," "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and "Beyond the Sunset," performed by Mary Gilbreath. Organist was Cora Mettling.

Casket bearers were Robert Atkinson, Rick Godwin, Jack Horner, Fred Miller, Mike Thompson and Jim Timmis.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.

Douglas Ree

HOUSTON - Douglas Lynn Ree, 53, died Jan. 17, 1999, in Houston.

Services were held at noon Jan. 20 in the chapel of George H. Lewis & Sons in Houston. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association, 1415 LaConcha, Houston, TX 77054.

Ree was born Oct. 1, 1945, in Wichita.

A resident of Houston for the past 30 years, he was employed by Maintenance Engineering Corp., an oil valve distribution company, and was known throughout the valve industry.

Survivors include his father, Bob Ree, Tacoma, Wash.; his mother, Doris Baker, Wichita; and two sisters, Sylva Heath, Tulsa, Okla., and Shelley Cook, Wichita.

Erylene Reynolds

MOLINE - Services for Erylene Elizabeth Reynolds, 79, who died Jan. 17, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 20 at the Moline Christian Church. The Rev. John Foust officiated, and Wanda Mills was the organist.

Burial was at 2:30 p.m. in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita. The Rev. Edwina Pote officiated.

Casket bearers were Clifford Baker, John Cranford, DeWayne Glover, Darryl Reynolds, Duane Reynolds and S.M. Spire.

A memorial has been established with the Moline Christian Church. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Theda Tucker

Theda L. Tucker, 73, of 1500 E. 10th, Winfield, died Jan. 20, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Steven Souther and Diane Massey will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church and the American Cancer Association. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Tucker was born Aug. 28, 1925, near New Salem, to Yoland J. and Lucille (Brant) Shiflet. The family moved to a farm near Udall in 1933 and returned to New Salem in 1939. Tucker graduated from Winfield High School in 1943.

On March 2, 1942, she married Cecil E. Tucker in Perry, Okla. They made their first home in Winfield, then resided in Idaho briefly before moving to a farm near Cambridge in 1951. They returned to Winfield in 1952. Her husband died Dec. 2, 1986.

Tucker began operation of Beauty Haven Hair Salon in Winfield in 1963 and owned and operated the business for over 35 years.

A member of First Presbyterian Church, she was also affiliated with the Winfield Soroptimists, American Legion Auxiliary and National Hair Dressers Association.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Tucker, Winfield, and Randall Tucker, Garland, Texas; a daughter, Barbara Martin, Winfield; a brother, Dean Shiflet, Bagley, Iowa; a sister, Maxine Mackey, Burden; seven grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Lorraine Sweeney

Lorraine Marcille Sweeney, 74, of 1819 Broadway, Winfield, died Jan. 22, 1999, in William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Winfield State Hospital & Training Center Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to service time Monday.

Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and Martin Luther Homes of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Sweeney was born March 22, 1924, in Edwards County, to Richard and Ethel (Graff) Sweeney.

She lived with her family in Edwards County before moving to Winfield State Hospital & Training Center in July 1940. She continued to live at the hospital for 57 years and moved to her home on Broadway in July 1997.

Survivors include a cousin, Joan Carlton, Atchison; her guardian, Melody Snively Waite, Winfield; and her caregivers and friends at Martin Luther Homes of Kansas.
