Ruby Topper

Ruby B. Topper, 65, of 1105 E. Fifth, Winfield, died Feb. 9, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the William Newton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Topper was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Missouri, to Frank and Mabel (Austin) Bruce. On July 13, 1952, she married Willie M. Topper in Huntsville, Ark. He died March 16, 1996.

She had attended the Free Methodist Church.

A homemaker, Topper also worked at Heritage House and Highland Village in direct care.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Topper and Randy Topper, a daughter, Grace Ready, and a brother, Roy Bruce, all of Winfield; and seven grandchildren.

Randall Frier

WILMOT - Services for Randall Lee Frier, 36, who died Feb. 2, 1999, were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 8 in Wilmot Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Vocal music was "Amazing Grace."

A memorial has been established with the Kansas & Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Vaudene Butler

Services for Vaudene Ester Butler, 85, who died Feb. 8, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 10 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. K.B. Murray officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Ruth Caskey was the organist, and Robert Winn was the vocalist. Music included "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were John Floyd, John Stoabs, Greg Feaster, Norman Butler, Robert McCalla and Mike Packard.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and Millington Street Baptist Church.

Ruby Stabler

CEDAR VALE - Services for Ruby Whited Stabler, 92, who died Feb. 5, 1999, were held at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in Cedar Vale Cemetery. The Rev. Roderick Hathaway officiated. Special music was "In the Garden."

A memorial has been established with Good Samaritan Village in Winfield. Contributions can be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Edna Lonberger

DOUGLASS - Edna Ruth Lonberger, 65, of Douglass, died Feb. 9, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Douglass. The Rev. Neal Alford will officiate. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.

Lonberger was born Jan. 17, 1934, in Curall, Mo., to Harry Williams and Nell Riley.

She married Keith Lonberger Sept. 23, 1950, in Salem, Ark.

Lonberger was the owner and operator of Jack and Jill Quick Shop and Triangle Cafe in Douglass.

Survivors include her husband, Keith Lonberger, and two daughters, Jana Taylor and Jackie Frakes, all of Douglass; two brothers, Robert Earl Williams, Mountain Home, Ark., and Curtis Williams, West Plains, Mo.; a sister, Helen Getic, Hesston, Pa.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A son, Michael Lonberger, preceded her in death.

Welma Baughman

WICHITA - Welma Blanche Baughman, 95, homemaker, of Wichita, formerly of Howard, died Feb. 9, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Nathan J. Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Howard Senior Center. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Baughman was born Nov. 16, 1903, at Howard, to Edwin Kooker and Myrtle Maude (Riggs) Anderson. She attended Elk County rural schools and grew up in the Howard area.

On Dec. 11, 1921, she married George Philip Baughman in Eureka. They farmed northwest of Howard until moving to Wichita in 1957.

The couple returned to Howard in 1968, and Baughman served many years as site manager for Friendship Meals. After her husband's death on July 16, 1983, she returned to Wichita to be near her children.

Baughman was a member of Howard United Methodist Church and later Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Wichita.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Baughman and Eldon Baughman, both of Wichita; two daughters, Virginia Rozell, Hudson, Fla., and Nadine Taylor, Augusta; 23 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Sandra McGee

AUGUSTA - Sandra Sue McGee, 53, of Augusta, died Feb. 9, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in South Lawn Cemetery at Severy. Pastor Terry Buchanan will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

McGee was born Feb. 14, 1945, in New York state, to Luther Monroe and Lorine (Vestal) Stevens. When she was a child, family moved to Wichita where she attended school.

McGee made her home in California and several other states and lived for many years in El Dorado. After her father's death in 1990, she moved to Severy to be near her mother. She had lived in Eureka and Augusta the past few years.

McGee had worked as a manager of Casey's convenience stores in Kansas and Missouri. She had also served as editor of The Howard Courant-Citizen and as a dispatcher and bookkeeper for Frank Bills Trucking in Severy.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Byers, El Dorado, and Michael Byers, Goddard; her mother, Lorine Stevens, Eureka; a brother, Wayne Stevens, Miami, Okla.; three grandchildren and one stepgrandchild.

William Wood

STOCKTON, Mo. - William Paul Wood, 71, of Stockton, Mo., formerly of Winfield and Dexter, died Feb. 12, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Military burial services will be held in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Wood was born March 26, 1927, in Cedar Vale, to Ora and Mollie (Bennett) Wood. When he was three years old, his family moved to the Dexter community where he was raised and educated. A 1947 graduate of Dexter High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

On Feb. 3, 1955, he married Norma Clark at Highridge, Mo. For many years, they made their home in Winfield where he was employed by the city of Winfield in the refuse department.

Following his retirement from the city of Winfield on April 24, 1992, the Woods moved to Stockton where he could pursue his passion for fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Wood, and his son, Jerry Wood, both of Stockton; his daughters, Mary Ann Wood and Bonnie Jean Wood, both of Parsons; two sisters, Betty Johnson, Arkansas City, and Bonnie Fisher, Bull Shoals, Ark.; four half-brothers, Leo Wood, Desert Hot Springs, Calif., Harold Wood and Belvin Myers, both of Arkansas City, and W.L. Myers, Bethany, Okla.

Dorothy Nickel

Dorothy I. Nickel, 75, of 1620 Cherry, Winfield, died Feb. 12, 1999, at Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 9 tonight and from 9 to service time Tuesday.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Chapter HK of P.E.O.

Nickel was born April 21, 1923, in Newton, to Frank and Myrtle (Beckman) Stull. She was raised in Newton and graduated from Newton High School. She attended Bethel College and then taught in a rural school near Newton.

During World War II she worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Newton.

On Dec. 26, 1943, she married B.A. Nickel in Newton. After the war, he completed his optometry work at the University of Chicago, and they moved to Winfield in 1949.

Nickel was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on numerous committees and boards. She was a past district officer of United Methodist Women and served as president of the local group several times. She was a 49-year member of P.E.O. and a charter member and past president of Chapter HK.

Survivors include her husband, B.A. Nickel, Winfield; a son, Bruce Nickel, Champaign, Ill.; a daughter, Betty Ann Dean, Maryville, Mo.; a brother, Jim Stull, Arkansas City; and four grandchildren.

Sheila Gould

Sheila Eastman Gould, 57, of 1917 Central, Winfield, died Feb. 12, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery west of Winfield.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Gould was born July 11, 1941, in Dodge City, to Arthur P. and Joye Bryan Davis. She attended Dodge City elementary schools and Winfield High School. Following her mother's death, she moved to Mountain Home, Ark., where she graduated from high school in 1960.

On Sept. 25, 1960, she married Donald D. Eastman in Mountain Home. They lived in Winfield throughout their marriage before divorcing in 1985.

On Aug. 2, 1997, she married Arlen Gould in Pray, Mont. They had resided in Winfield since their marriage.

Gould had been employed by the Winfield school district food service for 25 years. She had also served 10 years as a cook at Winfield Rest Haven.

A member of Winfield Church of Christ, Gould was formerly active in 4-H leadership. A fan of the Walnut Valley Festival, she was responsible for carving signs for the original festivals.

Survivors include her husband, Arlen Gould, Winfield; a son, Clint Eastman, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Gaydeana Hickman, Bozeman, Mont.; her stepmother, Renna Davis, Liberal; two sisters, Gloria Farley Overby, Lubbock, Texas, and Mary Lynn Weatherby, Hardesty, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.

A daughter, Angela Joye Eastman, died May 30, 1984.
