Edith Barnes
Edith Barnes, 76, formerly of 515 College, Winfield, died Feb. 12, 1999, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Barnes was born Oct. 18, 1922, on a farm west of Winfield, to Clifford and Flora (Kerr) Winters. She graduated from Winfield High School and attended Southwestern College.
On Nov. 11, 1942, she married Wallace J. Barnes in Yuma, Ariz. Together they operated the Sonner Motel in Winfield for 34 years.
Survivors include her husband, Wallace Barnes, Winfield; a son, Jack Barnes, Garland, Texas; two daughters, Carol Webber, Tulsa, Okla., and Linda Baer, Alamo, Calif.; a brother, Cliff Winters, South Strafford, Vt.; a sister, Shirley Foster, San Clemente, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Alma Bryce
TECUMSEH, Okla. - Alma J. Bryce, 95, of Tecumseh, died Feb. 13, 1999, in Sunset Estates Nursing Home in Tecumseh.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Fairlawn Cemetery
in Cushing, Okla. The Rev. Clint Dawkins will officiate. Davis Funeral Home of Cushing is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with Sunset Estates Nursing Home, 201 W. Walnut, Tecumseh, OK 74873.
Bryce was born Jan. 22, 1904, in Oxford, to Johnny and Martha (Harris) Webb. She was raised and educated in the Oxford area.
On March 28, 1920, she married N. Earnest Bryce in Oxford. They moved to Shawnee, Okla., later that year. Her husband died in March 1970.
Bryce moved to Cushing in 1970 and to Tecumseh in 1995 to be closer to her family. A homemaker, she was a member of the Park Place Baptist Church in Cushing.
Survivors include a son, Fariel Bryce, Winfield; a daughter, Marilyn Hall, Wichita; four brothers, Tom Webb, Eufaula, Okla., H.B. Webb, Cushing, Okla., Jeral Webb, St. Charles, Mo., and Robert Gibson, Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters, Mable Woodall, Cushing, and Pauline Unruh, Wasco, Calif.; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
George Aubert
TOPEKA - George Burton Aubert, 62, of Topeka, died Feb. 12, 1999, in a Topeka hospital.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 15 in Topeka Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association, Kansas Affiliate Inc., 5375 S.W. Seventh, Topeka, KS 66606-2395.
Aubert was born Jan. 23, 1937, in Onaga, to Claude Aloysius and Verena Catherine (Weber) Aubert. He was raised on a farm at White City and served in the U.S. Navy.
He married Marry Ella Harrell, and they later divorced.
On Dec. 25, 1979, he married Violet Louise Hewitt in Topeka.
A longtime truck driver, he had been a school bus driver for USD 501 for 15 years before retiring due to ill health.
Survivors include his wife, Violet Louise Aubert, a son, John Burton Aubert, four daughters, Vickie Sue Hester, Kathryn Mae Aubert, Verena Louise Aubert and Donna Faye Aubert, a stepson, Roy Milton Frantz, and a stepdaughter, Eleanor Louise Frantz, all of Topeka; three brothers, Delbert Aubert, Wellington, Orville Aubert, Winfield, and Gerald Aubert, Happy Camp, Calif; a sister, Verena Faye Aubert, Topeka; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Fern Defore
Fern Defore, 83, of 1205 Country Club Road, Winfield, died Feb. 13, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Defore was born April 6, 1915, on a farm near Udall, to Bert James and Lucy Pearl Thompson. Raised and educated in the Udall community, she graduated from Udall High School in 1932.
On April 2, 1933, she married Leonard E. Defore in Carthage, Mo. They lived and worked in the Udall area for 58 years. She was bookkeeper for the couple's Mobil Oil Co. bulk business.
Following retirement, the Defores moved to Winfield in 1973. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on April 2, 1998. Her husband died Jan. 14, 1999.
Defore was affiliated with the C.C. Club and the Centennial Club, both in Udall.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Marcie Teenor, Manhattan, and five great-granddaughters.
A daughter, Arlene Porter, preceded her in death.
Mildred Greathouse
WICHITA - Mildred May Greathouse, 81, of Wichita, formerly of Severy, died Feb. 11, 1999, at the Kansas Masonic Home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Twin Grove Cemetery
at Severy. Pastor Jerry Graber will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Masonic Home. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Greathouse was born Jan. 7, 1918, on a farm between Severy and Howard, to Harold and Bertha May (McLean) Hughes. She attended rural schools and Piedmont High School.
During World War II she was employed at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita. She made her home with her parents most of her life.
In 1972 she married Virgil Greathouse, and they lived in Sedan until his death in 1973. Greathouse lived in Arkansas City and Winfield before entering the Kansas Masonic Home on April 24, 1991.
Survivors include her cousins, Neola Miller and Verlan Dean, both of Eureka, Cecil James, Tucson, Ariz., and Harold McLean, Piedmont.
Richard Powers
VISTA, Calif. - Richard D. Powers, 74, of Vista, died Dec. 29, 1998.
A memorial has been established at the United Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 833 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607.
Powers was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Winfield. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1950.
Powers was a banker in Brookville, Salina and Manhattan before ending his career as president of the Garden National Bank in Garden City. He retired in 1987 and moved to Vista, Calif.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Vest Powers, Vista; two sons, Stephen B. Powers, Seattle, and John M. Powers, Kent, Wash.; a daughter, Laura Birk, Bartlesville, Okla.; and five grandchildren.
Edith Barnes
Services for Edith Barnes, 76, who died Feb. 12, 1999, were held at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 16 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association, 347 S. Laura, Wichita, KS 67211.

Dorothy Nickel
Services for Dorothy Nickel, 75, who died Feb. 12, 1999, were held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Jerre Nolte officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Marcia Wheatcroft sang "In the Garden" and "Asleep in Jesus." Julie Dean played a piano solo, "Prelude No. 1 in G Minor," by Catherine Rollin. The congregation sang "Amazing Grace."

James Poteete
WICHITA - James William Poteete, 63, formerly of Elk Falls, died Feb. 13, 1999, at his home in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Elk Falls Cemetery. Lloyd G. Zimmerman will officiate. Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard is in charge of arrangements.
Poteete was born March 3, 1935, in Maize, to Earl and Carrie Mildred (Keeth) Poteete. He attended schools in the Maize and Elk Falls communities.
Poteete also attended the Independence college and Kansas universities and lived most of his life in the Wichita area. He was employed as a mechanical engineer for Boeing Aircraft Co. for many years.
Survivors include a brother, Raymond Poteete, Niotaze; and four sisters, Betty Sanger, Mission, Texas, Barbara Dixon, Ellendale, N.D., and Shirley Lane and Carol Shockey, both of Wichita.
Joe Williams
LONGTON - Joseph Edward "Joe" Williams, 45, of Longton, died Feb. 14, 1999, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Elk Valley High School gymnasium in Longton. The Rev. Joe Nichols will officiate. Burial will be in Longton Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Leukemia Society of America. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Williams was born Jan. 20, 1954, at Mount Pleasant, Mich. He attended elementary school in Michigan before moving with his family to Longton while in sixth grade. He graduated from Elk Valley High School in 1973.
In 1975 he married Marlene Thomas in Independence. They later divorced.
On Nov. 7, 1997, he married Debbie Sue Wussow in Miami, Okla. They made their home in the Longton community.
Williams was employed by Hackney and Sons in Independence for many years.
He played pool in a traveling tournament league in southeast Kansas.
Survivors include his wife, Debbie Williams, Longton; a son, Amos Williams, Des Moines, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Brook Bodwell, Pittsburg; two brothers, Robert Timmer, Mason, Mich., and James Timmer, Mount Pleasant, Mich.; two half-brothers, David Timmer, Lansing, Mich., and Gary Timmer, Mount Pleasant, Mich.; two sisters, Linda Robinson and Anna Miller, both of Mount Pleasant, Mich.; and a half-sister, Sharon May, Detroit, Mich.
