Tessa Early
Tessa M. Early, 92, formerly of 415 Bliss, Winfield, died Feb. 21, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Rick Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Early was born Jan. 21, 1907, near Plains, to Charlie C. and Sarah Bell (Orin) Jones. She graduated from Cedar Vale High School.
On June 25, 1924, she married John H. Early in Winfield. They resided together in Winfield until he died May 30, 1980.
She worked as a seamstress for J.C. Penney and Petit in Winfield.
A son, Emery Early, died in 1966.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Long, Winfield; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Merceda Ares
RUSSELL - Merceda Faye Ares, 31, of Chicago, formerly of Russell, died Feb. 17, 1999, in Chicago.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Pohlman's Memorial Chapel in Russell. The Rev. Michael Fibranz will officiate. Inurnment will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery
in Russell.
The Mercedes Ares Memorial has been established at Russell High School. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Ares was born Jan. 2, 1968, in Russell, to Robert A. and Donna R. (Dumler) Ares. She graduated from Russell High School and the University of Kansas and received a master's degree from St. Louis University.
Ares was a social worker for the Job Corps in St. Louis until August 1998 when she took a management position in the Chicago Job Corps office.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Donna R. and Jay Hutchinson, and a stepbrother, Brad Hutchinson, all of Russell; two stepsisters, Kathleen Fuller, Russell, and Rebecca Thouvenelle, Joplin, Mo.; and an aunt, Dava Carrell, Winfield.
Myrtle Bateman
Myrtle I. Bateman, 88, longtime resident of Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield, died Feb. 23 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Cemetery
in Winfield. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 p.m. today.
A memorial has been established with Walnut Hill Nursing Center. Contributions can be made through the nursing center or funeral home.
Bateman was born July 24, 1910, in Galena, to Mr. and Mrs. Willard Sylvester. She was raised and educated in Galena and resided in Kansas throughout her life.
On March 1, 1968, she married W.J. Bateman in Wellington where they made their home. Her husband died Oct. 14, 1971. Bateman resided in Arkansas City for several years before moving to Winfield in 1975.
She was a member of the Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Twila Franklin, Mesa, Colo.; a sister, Gretchen R. Sisco, Santa Ana, Calif.; and her longtime guardian and friend, Ada Dunbar, Winfield.
Flora Gurskey
ANDOVER - Flora E. Gurskey, 95, homemaker, formerly of Cedar Vale, died Feb. 23, 1999.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hillside Funeral Home East in Wichita and at 1:15 p.m. in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Gurskey was born and raised in Cedar Vale.
Survivors include a daughter, Bertie Mills, Andover; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Michelle Short
PLANO, Texas - Michelle Dexter Short, 32, of Plano, formerly of Winfield, died Feb. 22, 1999, at her home after a one and a half year battle against cancer.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. The Revs. Todd Harris and Rick Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, 1820 Janes, Winfield, KS 67156.
Short graduated from Winfield High School.
Survivors include her husband of 10 1/2 years, Charlie Short, and two sons, Connor Short and Corey Short, all of Plano; her parents, Bill and Jane Dexter, Winfield; a brother, Jeff Dexter, Wichita; a sister, Melissa Dexter, Dallas; her grandparents, Grace Dexter and Archie and Sarah Leach, all of Sedan; and her mother- and father-in-law, William and Susan Speer, Dexter.
Annie Knapp
OXFORD - Annie Lois Knapp, 66, lifelong resident of Oxford, died Feb. 23, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Gordon Souder will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday.
Memorials have been established with the Leukemia Society, Hospice Inc. and Oxford's marching band. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Knapp was born Sept. 24, 1932, in Oxford, to Charlie G. and Margaret Annie (Womack) Martin. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1950.
On Sept. 24, 1977, she married David M. Knapp in Oxford.
Knapp worked for the Oxford Telephone Co. in both Oxford and Belle Plaine until the late 1960s when she went to work at the Oxford Bank. In 1993 she began working for the Oxford Community Bank.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Derby.
Survivors include her husband, David Knapp, Oxford, and two brothers, Womack G. Martin, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Donald H. Martin, Salt Lake City.
Myrtle Bateman
Services for Myrtle I. Bateman, 88, who died Feb. 23, 1999, were held at 10 a.m. Feb. 25 in St. Mary's Cemetery
in Winfield. The Rev. Michael Maybrier officiated. "Amazing Grace" was sung.
A memorial has been established with Walnut Hill Nursing Center.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Del Thornbrugh
ARKANSAS CITY - Fred Delmer "Del" Thornbrugh, 80, of Arkansas City, died Feb. 24, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Norman Reeves will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Central Christian Church. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Thornbrugh was born March 10, 1918, in Walnut Shade, Mo., to Cathern Margaret Thornbrugh.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army under General George Patton.
On June 12, 1940, he married Hettie "Dude" McCrorey in Reed Springs, Mo. They moved to the Arkansas City area in 1949. She died in April 1998.
Thornbrugh worked for Reedy Ford Motors for many years.
Survivors include two brothers, Carl Stough, Dexter, and Robert St. Clair, Ephrata, Wash.; and a sister, Marie Yaeger, Newkirk, Okla.
Bill Pudden
DEXTER - William Harry "Bill" Pudden, 62, of Dexter, died Feb. 24, 1999.
The Rosary will be recited tonight at 8 at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Dexter High School Scholarship Fund and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Pudden was born May 19, 1936, in Arkansas City, to James Aaron and Iva Matilda (Wilson) Pudden. He was raised and educated in a country school in the Dexter area and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1953. He continued his education at Cowley County Community College and Kansas State University and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Pudden married Kay Rademacher who died in 1966.
On May 24, 1968, he marred Delores Rademacher in Arkansas City. They made their home in the Dexter area. A rancher and farmer, Pudden was retired from the Santa Fe Railroad.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Dexter Civic Club, Cowley County Livestock Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had served on the Dexter school board, Two Rivers Co-op board and Grouse Creek Watershed board.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Pudden, Dexter; six sons, Russell Pudden, Bill Pudden and Bret Pudden, all of Dexter, Todd Pudden, Maple City, and Bob Pudden and Brady Pudden, both of Arkansas City; a daughter, Darla Swanson, Arkansas City; a sister, Mary Moorman, Tonkawa, Okla.; and nine grandchildren.
A daughter, Brook Pudden, preceded him in death.
Don Schwantes
Don R. Schwantes, 55, of 500 N. Michigan, Winfield, died Feb. 26, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. No service will be held. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
