Ruby Pollock

WEST SEATTLE, Wash. - Ruby Irene Pollock, 73, of West Seattle, formerly of Winfield and Anthony, died Feb. 14, 1999, at Providence Medical Center in Seattle.

No memorial services are to be held. Her cremains will be interred in the family burial site at Anthony.

Pollock was born on a farm east of Anthony on Nov. 13, 1925, to Jesse and Ellen Wilson. She attended school in Anthony where she met Marlan Richards Pollock, her husband-to-be. They married in 1943 and lived in Manhattan where he attended Kansas State University.

After he graduated, the family moved to Winfield where they operated Guild Electric Co. until 1955 when Mr. Pollock began working at Boeing. In 1962, the family moved to Renton, Wash. Her husband died in 1994.

Pollock worked as a seamstress, in the electrical shop in Winfield and for Frances Pollock in Pollocks' Cafe and later did volunteer work at her church.

In 1991 she suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed and unable to speak. She spent the remainder of her years in West Seattle with a private nurse.

Survivors include a son, Larry Pollock, Incline Village, Nev.; a brother, Paul Wilson, Wichita; and a granddaughter.

Megan Wood

ARKANSAS CITY - Megan Ann Wood, 19, homemaker, of Arkansas City, died Feb. 24, 1999, at Columbia Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Sacred heart Cemetery in Colwich.

Friends may call at Smith Mortuary in Derby from 9 to 11 a.m. today.

A memorial has been established as the Megan Wood Memorial Fund, c/o Oxford Bank, 101 N. Sumner, Oxford, KS 67119.

Survivors include her husband, Walter L. Wood, and a son, Michael Allen Wood, both of Arkansas City; her father, Leon A. Ballinger, Colwich; two brothers, Daniel Ballinger, Texas, and Mark Ballinger, Colwich; two sisters, Tarressa Mohrman, Grand Island, Neb., and Cynthia Evans, Belle Plaine; her grandparents, Alford Ballinger, Colwich, and Clara Jane Adams, Bentley; and her in-laws, Lowell and Marrietta Coggins, Oxford, and Larry and Joetta Wood, Blackwell, Okla.

Helen Jackson

ARKANSAS CITY - Helen H. Jackson, 83, of Arkansas City, was found dead at her residence on Feb. 25, 1999.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bible Christian Church. The Rev. H. Dean LaVelle will officiate. Burial will be in Geuda Springs Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Hand Maidens of the Lord at the Bible Christian Church. Contributions can be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Jackson was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Dodge City, to John Alvin and Roxana M. (Rutter) Jackson. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1933.

In March 1935 she married Terrell Jackson in Anthony. They made their home in Arkansas City until 1938 when they moved to Lawton, Okla., where her husband was plant manager of Fort Sill Indian School for 27 years. Jackson graduated from the Oklahoma College for Women, Chickasha, in 1956 with a teaching degree. She taught sixth grade at Taft Elementary School in Lawton.

After her husband's death in 1967, Jackson moved back to Arkansas City and taught at Pleasant Valley School near Winfield until she retired in 1977.

She was a member of the Bible Christian Church in Arkansas City.

Survivors include a son, Terry K. Jackson, Ventura, Calif.; a sister, Jo Ann Bush, Arkansas City; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

An infant daughter, Delores Ann Jackson, preceded her in death.

Michelle Short

Services for Michelle Dexter Short, 32, who died Feb. 22, 1999, were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 27 at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Todd Harris officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Congregational music included "It Is Well with My Soul" and "Hymn of Promise." Martin Rude sang "Hold Me, Jesus."

Casket bearers were Jonathon Aiken, Bruce Clark, Mike Eaglin, Alan Heckart, Jim Johnson and Steve Nettrouer.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, 1820 Janes, Winfield, KS 67156.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Marilyn Schwyhart

Marilyn Lea Schwyhart, 69, of 315 E. 16th, Winfield, died Feb. 27, 1999, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. March 1 at Grace United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ron Keith and Jerre Nolte officiated. Inurnment was in Udall Cemetery.

Louise Schuppener was the organist. Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Schwyhart was born Nov. 1, 1929, in Larned, to Harold and Mary (Funk) Rice. She graduated from Zook High School and attended Southwestern College.

On June 6, 1948, she married Henry D. Schwyhart in Larned. They resided in Winfield where she worked at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center as a mental health technician for more than 27 years.

She was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Schwyhart, Winfield; five sons, Bruce Schwyhart and Russell Schwyhart, both of Winfield, Jay Schwyhart, Minneapolis, Minn., and Vance Schwyhart and Del Schwyhart, both of Lawrence; her stepmother, Elsie Bird, Larned; a half-brother, Duane Rice, Alexandria, Va.; a half-sister, Margaret Gray, Fort Worth, Texas; and 13 grandchildren.

Elmo Rosenburg

AFTON, Okla. - Elmo B. Rosenburg, 75, of Afton, formerly of Dexter and Arkansas City, died Feb. 26, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield until 9 tonight and until noon Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Rosenburg was born Sept. 7, 1923, near Ashburn, Mo., to Burt and Alma (Huffman) Rosenburg. He was raised in Ashburn and graduated from Ashburn High School. As a young man he began farming.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy as a bosun's mate from 1943 to 1946 aboard ships in the Pacific Theatre, including the USS Atlantic City and the USS Admiral. He then returned to Missouri where he attended agricultural college at Columbia.

Rosenburg farmed in Missouri for a number of years, then began employment as a truck driver in Arkansas City. He had been employed as a driver for Silverdale Stone Co. and also for Groendyke Transport.

On March 21, 1960, he married Violet Day in Newkirk, Okla. They lived in the Dexter and Arkansas City areas for many years. He retired during the late 1970s, and they moved to Afton in 1984.

He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Wichita Masonic Shrine and Shelton Beaty Post 18 of the American Legion of Arkansas City.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Rosenburg, Afton; two sons, Kenneth Rosenburg, New London, Mo., and Harley Rosenburg, Afton; a stepson, Virgil Uplinger, Clarksburg, Mo.; four daughters, Carolyn Coffey, New London, Mo., Gloria Morris, Houston, Joyce Graham, Grove, Okla., and Cynthia Ice, Tallequah, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Addie Ice, Ponca City, Okla.; 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Specht

ATLANTA - Evelyn L. Specht, 79, of Atlanta, died Feb. 26, 1999, at her home.

A private burial is planned. Wheeler Funeral Home of Burden is in charge of arrangements.

Specht was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Wheeling, W.Va. On Aug. 14, 1935, she married Wilbur Specht. He died in 1988.

She had been a cook most of her life and had worked for the Delta Queen Paddle Wheel Riverboat for many years.

She lived in Henderson, Nev., before moving to Atlanta four years ago.

Survivors include a brother, Gene Hackethorne, Ohio; two sisters, Elizabeth of Pennsylvania and Marge of Ohio; three grandchildren, Deborah Ventle, Atlanta, and Cheryl Voss and Anthony Specht, both of Derby.; and six great-grandchildren.

Zoe Niccum

OXFORD - Zoe Edens Niccum, 82, of Oxford, the first woman to serve on the Oxford City Council., died Feb. 28, 1999, at Riverview Manor.

Cremation has been effected. There will be no service.

A memorial has been established with the Oxford Christian Church. Contributions can be made through the church or Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home.

Zoe was born July 16, 1916, in Winfield, to Bert Winslow and Gertrude Sarah (Edens) Barnes. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1934 and later attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo., and Wichita State University.

For eight years she served as librarian for the Oxford Public Library.

On Feb. 1, 1936, she married Francis James Niccum in Wellington. He died March 9, 1979.

She was a member of the Oxford Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Kay "Nicki" Robbins, Tucson, Ariz., and Barbara Anne Niccum, address not given; and one granddaughter.

C.E. McDonald

BELLE PLAINE - The Rev. C.E. "Brother Mac" McDonald, 79, of Belle Plaine, died Feb. 27, 1999, at his residence.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Belle Plaine. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the scholarship fund of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo.

McDonald was born July 19, 1919, in Kansas City, Mo., to Charles A. and Ruby A. (Askew) McDonald. On May 14, 1944, he married Lucille L. Penny.

He was a retired pastor of the First Baptist Church in Belle Plaine.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille McDonald, Belle Plaine; two sons, Ronald McDonald, Wellington, and Rodger McDonald, Rose, Okla.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Thorsten Coats

ARKANSAS CITY - Thorsten Hunter Coats, son of Justin Eugene and Bambi Dawn (Ackerman) Coats, was stillborn Feb. 26, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors in addition to his parents are his grandparents, Teresa Ackerman and William Marsh, Arkansas City, LaDonna Coats, El Dorado, and Randy Coats, Fredonia; and his great-grandparents, Katherine "Katie" Ackerman, Arkansas City, and Keith and Mary Margaret Coats, Fredonia.
