Amanda Martin

Amanda Elizabeth Martin, 86, of Arkansas City died Wednesday at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 1999 at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery chapel. Pastor Larry Schwartz will officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday until 1 p.m.

A memorial has been established with Northside Baptist Church.

Martin was born Dec. 3, 1912 in Paris, Tenn., to Henry and Maude (Crawford) Moore. She attended schools in Paris and Memphis. She received training at the John Gaston Hospital in Memphis for an LPN.

Martin married Raymond Wilford Martin in 1952 in Memphis. As he served in the Coast Guard they lived in Florida and Michigan. She worked in hospitals in each place they lived. They moved to Arkansas City in 1959 and she worked at the Arkansas City Memorial Hospital until retiring.

She was a charter member of the Northside Baptist Church and a member of the Spencer Ralston V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include Charlie and Mary Benton of Arkansas City who took care of her for many years and three cousins.

Arrangements are being made by Hawks Funeral Home in Arkansas City.

Harold McMullin

ARKANSAS CITY - Harold W. McMullin, 92, of Arkansas City, died March 12, 1999, at his residence.

Services will be at 11 a.m Tuesday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church. The Rev. Tony Horsley will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m today at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with Mount Hope United Methodist Church.

McMullin was born Jan. 24, 1907, in Waldron, to James Jason and Celia (Windsor) McMullin. He attended Braman, Okla., schools and graduated Blackwell (Okla.) High School in 1927.

He worked in oil fields and farmed after high school, then worked for Consolidated Oil Co.

On. Sept. 21, 1934, he married Elanora Coggins near Geuda Springs.

In 1937 he returned to farming. In 1940 he went to work for Kanotex Refinery, which later became APCO, where he worked until his retirement in 1972. He farmed part time throughout his career at APCO.

McMullin was a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church for approximately 70 years and a longtime member of a domino club. He served on the IXL school board for nine years.

Survivors include his wife, Elanora McMullin, Arkansas City; three daughters, Florence Logan, Peculiar, Mo., Helen Czaplinski, Arkansas City, and Janice Mullin, Enid, Okla.; a brother, E.L. McMullin, Hastings, Mich.; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Walter Wakefield

WICHITA - Walter W. "Brick" Wakefield, 72, of Wichita, formerly of Douglass, died March 12, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Douglass United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wakefield was born June 22, 1926, in Douglass, to Cecil and Eva Mary (Woods) Wakefield. He graduated from Wichita State University and was a member of Alpha Gamma Gamma fraternity.

On March 23, 1975, he married Phyllis R. Rotolo in Denver.

A former resident of Douglass and Castle Rock, Colo., he was a retired geologist and rancher.

He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, a charter member of the International Petroleum Association and a Kansas Aviation Museum volunteer.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Wakefield, Wichita; four sons, Walter Wakefield, Atlanta, and John Wakefield, Gray Wakefield and James Wakefield, all of Denver; two daughters, Georgia Gilliom, Littleton, Colo., and Herta Wakefield, Castle Valley, Utah; two sisters, Cecile McLaughlin and Mildred Lee, both of Wichita; and nine grandchildren.

Anne Schwantes

A memorial service for Anne V. Schwantes, 93, who died March 9, 1999, was held at 11 a.m. March 13 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist. The congregation sang "Holy, Holy, Holy."

Honorary casket bearers were Harry, Jim and Richard Barnthouse, Francis Hunt, Don Kline, Ivan Martin, Paul Mathews and Bill Wakefield.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church.

John Miller

Services for John Mark Miller, 37, who died March 7, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. March 12 at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett officiated. Burial was in Tisdale Cemetery.

Vocal music included "The Old Rugged Cross," performed by Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer, "Angels Among Us," "Lane's Theme," "The Dance" and If Tomorrow Never Comes." Keith Anglemyer was the organist.

The congregation sang "Here I Am, Lord," "Jesus Loves Me" and Great Is Thy Faithfulness."

Honorary casket bearers were Frank Doolittle, Joe Donham, Kenny Geer, Lincoln Kerr, Marty Kerr and Randy Seward.

Casket bearers were Doug Burns, Kevin Harris, Larry Harris, Rod Hedges, Stacy Kowalsky and Tony Weber.

Memorials have been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church and the American Heart Association.,

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

William Watson

ARKANSAS CITY - William Lewis "Will" Watson, 78, of Arkansas City, died March 13, 1999 at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

A wake will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of God in Christ, 611 N. Sixth. His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 2448 Edgemont. Gregory W. Spencer Funeral Director Inc. of Fort Worth, Texas, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made to the William L. Watson Scholarship Fund through the Arkansas City Church of God in Christ.

Watson was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Wheatley, Ark., to James and Lovie (Allmon) Watson. The family moved to Pittsburg where he attended Douglas Grammar School. In 1929 the family moved to Arkansas City.

Watson helped raised his younger siblings and in 1935 began work for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Wellington.

In March 1943, he married Juanita Maxine Morris. She died in 1945. In 1948, he married Hortense A. McAbee.

Watson worked at a packing plant in Tulsa, Okla., and later returned to Arkansas City, where he was employed by Mauer Neuer Packing Plant until his retirement in 1981. He also farmed.

Watson organized the Monarchs, a baseball team that won games throughout Kansas. He also founded a singing group, BC Gospel Mourners, which was the first black group to sing live on KSOK radio.

Watson was a member of the Church of God in Christ where he served as a deacon for nearly 40 years. He founded the Educational Committee, which encouraged academic excellence in young people at his church.

Survivors include his wife, Hortense Watson, Arkansas City; four children, Will Mae Slaughter, Kansas City, Mo., Bishop William H. Watson, Lubbock, Texas, Marcia Jean Redmond, Wichita, and Barbara L. Watson, Lubbock, Texas; one stepson, Freddie Nichol, address not given; three brothers, John H. Watson, Jarnes Watson and Charles E. Watson Sr., and four sisters, Lucille Jennings, Viola Watson, Velva Jennings and Arceolla Fields, all of Arkansas City; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Paul Branine

WARSAW, Mo. - Paul Duane Branine, 84, of Warsaw, former owner of Branine Chevrolet of Mulvane, died March 13, 1999, at Four Seasons Nursing Home in Sedalia, Mo.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Senter-Smith Mortuary in Mulvane. The Revs. Lee and Linda Louderback will officiate. Burial will be in Mulvane Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association.

Branine was born Nov. 16, 1914, in Cheney. A veteran, he was a 32nd degree Shriner.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Branine and Donald Branine, both of Warsaw, Mo., and Roger Branine, Mulvane; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Jean Keely

DOUGLASS - Wilma Jean Keely, 72, of Douglass, died March 13, 1999, at Medicalodge of Douglass.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Douglass Christian Church. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Keely was born April 18, 1926, in Newton, to Earl and Mamie (Lewis) McDougal.

She married Lowell Keely Nov. 23, 1949, in Douglass. He died June 18, 1983.

A homemaker and farm wife, Keely was a member of the Douglass Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Alan Keely, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Linda Bonnell, Rose Hill; a brother, LeRoy Smithers, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Vi Brown, California, Leota Edwards, Albuquerque, N.M., and Cris Snyder, Topeka; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Carman Ellinger

PARRISH, Fla. - Carman E. Ellinger, 78, professional musician, of Parrish, formerly of Winfield, died March 12, 1999.

Services were held March 15 at Ellenton Funeral Home, Ellenton, Fla.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238, or to any charity.

Ellinger was born June 29, 1920, in Winfield.

He was a professional musician whose career spanned 64 years as a trumpet player, starting at the age of six. He won many prizes in county, state and national competitions throughout his school years.

He studied with Dr. Frank Simon at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and attended Wichita State University and Oklahoma A&M where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

Ellinger's music career culminated with 20 years of service in the Navy. He graduated from the Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C., and served on the battleship USS Nevada. During World War II, he participated in the invasions of Normandy and southern France and the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. During his last 15 years in the Navy, he played in the band at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

After retiring from the Navy, he was a building inspector in Annapolis.

Ellinger was a member of the Parrish United Methodist Church and the Fleet Reserve Association.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Imogene (Gartin) Ellinger, Parrish; two sons, Marshall Ellinger, Lancaster, Calif., and Gary Ellinger, Frisco, Colo.; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
