Francis Denney

Francis Dale Denney, 56, of 312 Soward, Winfield, died March 14, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Jerre Nolte will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church and Cowley County Mental Health and Counseling Center.

Denney was born Oct. 19, 1942, in Welda, to Forrest James and Madena (Cranston) Denney. He was raised in the Winfield area. After high school he joined the U.S. Army. He later completed a course of technical study with DeVry Institute.

Denney had worked at the Mobil refinery in Augusta and later with Honeywell Business Systems.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, active with Grace House and a member of the Winfield Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include two daughters, Valerie Sue Denney, Wichita, and Diana Madena Denney, Cassel, Germany; a brother, Forrest Doyle Denney, Manhattan, and two grandchildren.

Grace Hunt

Grace Hunt, 92, homemaker, formerly of 1020 Lowery, Winfield, died March 14, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village .

A memorial service will be held later in Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Special Olympics. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Hunt was born Oct. 12, 1906, on a farm near Mountain Grove, Mo., where she was raised and educated.

As a young woman she married Elmer Hunt. They resided for many years in the Humboldt area. Her husband preceded her in death.

Hunt moved to Winfield in 1989. She had lived at Good Samaritan Village since 1990.

She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Thelma Hunt, Iola, and a nephew, George Scott, Sedan.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, James, Louis and George Hunt.

Nettie Conner

PAWHUSKA, Okla. - Nettie B. Conner, 96, died March 15, 1999, at her home in Pawhuska.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Grace Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Dennis Jordan will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City.

Honorary casket bearers will be Adrian "Abe" Conner and Alvin Conner. Casket bearers will Michael, Matthew and Mark Eggleston, John and David Butler and Marvin Shiever.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Langford was born March 22, 1902, in Houlka, Miss., to Harold G. and Mary Jane (Rorie) Langford.

She married Felix Denson in Mississippi. After his death, she married Rufus M. Conner in 1929 at Newkirk, Okla. He, too, preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church of Arkansas City.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Williams, Pawhuska; a sister, Grace Moore, New Site, Miss.; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 53 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren.

Bud Graham

ARKANSAS CITY - Ormond L. "Bud" Graham, 70, of Arkansas City, died March 16, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ron Keith and Billy Hughes will officiate. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Graham was born Nov. 22, 1928, in Geuda Springs, to Harold Sweasy "Bud" and Ruby Lavina (Warner) Graham. He attended Geuda Springs schools and worked on neighboring farms. He was drafted into the United States Army and fought on the front lines in the Korean War.

On Aug. 27, 1951, he married Helen L. Kirkpatrick in Newkirk, Okla. They made their home in Arkansas City where Graham was employed by Apco (Total Refinery) until his retirement in 1990.

His wife and a daughter, Lavina Lucille Graham, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his son, Bobby Graham, Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Gladys Jefferies, Belle Plaine; two sisters, Bonnie Springer, Arkansas City, and Betty Turner, McKinney, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Grant Miller

ARKANSAS CITY - Grant Marshall Neil Miller, son of Christopher Shawn Miller and Starla Dawn Kilts, was stillborn March 15, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Riverview Cemetery. The Rev. Paul McKnight will officiate. Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors in addition to his parents are his grandparents, Juil Kilts, Wellington, Barbara Jamison, Salisaw, Okla., Euel DeWayne Miller, San Jose, Calif., and Cynthia Kilts and Brent Johnson, both of Arkansas City; his great-grandparents, Harvey and Virginia Jamison and Earvil and Jamie Miller, all of Salisaw, and Vernon and Imogene Queen, Belle Plaine; and his great-great-grandmother, Cleo Jamison, Salisaw.

Lyda Smith

NORWICH - Lyda Frances Smith, 88, formerly of Howard, died March 13, 1999, at Norwich Care Center.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Wayland Whitlow will officiate. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery, north of Howard.

A memorial has been established with the Howard Church of Christ. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Smith was born Dec. 7, 1910, in Onaga, to Jess Louis and Lucy Jane (Rokes) Jontra. When she was a child, the family moved to Gage, Okla., where she completed her freshman year of high school. In the mid-1920s the family moved to Howard where she graduated as class valedictorian at Howard High School in 1929. After completing normal training, she taught for a brief time at Lima rural school in Elk County.

On June 24, 1930, she married James William Bernard Smith on a farm northeast of Howard. They lived in Utica for a few years. Because of her husband's ministry in the Church of Christ, the Smiths lived in Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas. In the early 1970s they returned to Howard where she worked for Friendship Meals. The Smiths moved to Wichita in 1993 to be near family.

Her husband died Aug. 10, 1996.

Smith was a longtime member of the Howard Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Lucile Horsman, West Memphis, Ark., and DeLois Allen, Wichita; a brother, Austin Jontra, Copan, Okla.; a sister, Edna Dempsey, Windsor, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

A son, Richard James Smith, died in 1962.

Dorothy Dobbs

Dorothy Lorraine (Stephenson) Dobbs, 71, of 2020 E. 12th, Winfield, died March 16, 1999, at Holiday Resort retirement center in Emporia.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and until 11 a.m. Saturday.

Memorials have been established with the Oxford Education System Music Program and Hand-to-Hand Hospice in Emporia. Contributions can be made at the church or funeral home.

Dobbs was born Aug. 26, 1927, in Little River, to Edward B. and Lorraine (Irwin) Stephenson. She was raised in Little River and Douglass and moved to Winfield as a youth. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1945 and attended the University of Kansas and Southwestern College. She received a bachelor's degree in music from SC in 1950.

On July 30, 1950, she married James R. Dobbs in Winfield. They lived in Wichita and Independence before returning to Winfield in 1953.

Dobbs first taught music in the Udall and Wichita school districts. In 1953 she began teaching in the Winfield school district at Country View and South Vernon elementary schools. She later was a vocal music instructor at Winfield High School.

In 1969 she began teaching vocal music in the Oxford school system and taught there for 21 years. Following her retirement in 1990, she continued to substitute in Winfield, Arkansas City, Oxford and Dexter schools.

Her husband died March 4, 1997. She had resided in Emporia since January.

A member of the First United Methodist Church of Winfield, she was a longtime member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was also a member of the Winfield American Legion Auxiliary which she had served as state historian. She was affiliated with the H.L. Snyder Foundation Auxiliary, Winfield Community Theatre, Winfield Country Club and Flying Jayhawks of the University of Kansas.

Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie Moore, Emporia, and Jami Axe, Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Bonnie Sandell, Tucson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

Charles Craig

WICHITA - Charles F. Craig, 84, of Wichita, died March 13, 1999, at Park West Plaza.

Services were held at 2 p.m. March 18 in Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Children Service League, 1365 N. Custer, Wichita, KS 67203.

Craig was born Dec. 31, 1914, in Udall, to Charles and Bessie Emiline (Stout) Craig. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army.

Craig was a retired tool planner and international developer for Cessna.

His wife, Pearl A. Craig, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Robert L. Craig, Johnstown, Colo.; a daughter, Judith A. Goodwin, Overland Park; a brother, Frank Craig, and a sister, Laura Blankenship, both of Udall; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jessie Smith

ROCKWALL, Texas - Jessie M. Smith, 97, of Rockwall, formerly of Cowley County, died March 17, 1999.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Free Methodist Church. The Rev. Timothy A. Greenawalt will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Woodlands Cemetery in Sand Springs, Okla.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 tonight at the Rest Haven Rockwall Chapel.

A memorial has been established with Central College, 1200 S. Main, P.O. Box 1403, McPherson, KS 67460.

Smith was born Aug. 20, 1901, near Winfield, to John Sylvester and Zadie Elizabeth (Jackson) Fredrick.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Rockwall.

Her husband, William W. Smith, died in 1983. Two sons, Melvin Ellis Smith and Howard Wesley Smith, died in 1943.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Houston, Rockwall; four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
